Your Weekend Viewing Guide

It’s our second NHL-less weekend, and before we get to what you can do to fill the time — though not with anything wholesome or actually useful because who the fuck wants to do that? — let’s try and clear up some of the gloom and doom.

You have to look past the publicity stunts that abound in this negotiation right now. And it’s all publicity stunts. As evil it was, you kind of have to marvel at how the NHL was able to turn the PR war on it’s head in the span of what felt like seven minutes. But walking out of a meeting after less than an hour isn’t going to help anything, and nor is having your barely literate union members take to twitter to try and nail themselves to the cross.

In the end, both sides have gotten to a 50-50 split, and both have offered to get there next year. They may argue how to and what comes along with it, and maybe those obstacles are bigger than they seem. But the NHLPA’s “3rd” proposal and the NHL’s last really aren’t all that far apart, considering where both sides started from. And while there won’t be any news this weekend most likely, just like there’s been every time they’re not actually meeting there will be back-channel phone calls and conversations, and that’s kind of where the real work gets done.

Anyway, the viewing:

Friday:

BLECH – That will be the reaction of most on here when the San Francisco Giants are put to the sword by the Hilljacks to the Southwest. I don’t think I’ll have ever supported something out of Detroit so much since Robocop. And that didn’t work out so well for me six years ago. FUCK. ME.

Rockford v. Peoria: Only online unless you feel like making the two hour trek, but the Piggies search for their first win against the mini-Blues. You can get a glimpse of Jaden Schwartz, who still has the potential to be a major pain in the ass for a decade even though he’s about the size of a large boil.

Bulls presea….. Ha! I almost typed that whole thing!

Saturday

European Footy: International break is over, so the clubs return. If you’re up early on Saturday, or just getting home from a true classic on Friday night,  Chelsea-Spurs is on at 6:45.

College Football: Once again, the only important games take place in the SEC, but all you Big 10 grads are free to pretend like your schools matter. Well, most of your schools do (not you, Ohio State), but you’re football teams don’t. Neither do your basketball teams.

Fire v. Revolution: It’s on at 6:30, but on some channel you only get on Comcast and maybe not even then. But there’s only two games left in the regular season, and the Revs suck something awful, so the Fire should be cementing home-field advantage in the playoffs with this one.

Hogs v. Checkers: The Hogs open the home season at MetroCentre, where I thought we could all look forward to Nick Leddy being abused by Jeff Skinner. But Skinner isn’t listed on the roster and hasn’t reported. Brett Sutter and Justin Faulk have though, and Jared Staal. And you can always laugh at Dan Ellis.

Sunday

NFL: Another fucking Bears-less Sunday, but you can make up for it by joining Killion wherever he is to watch RGIII against the Giants, where he’ll probably be eaten whole by the 2nd quarter. But other than that, pretty much every game blows.

Rockford v. Charlotte again: Yeah, the Piggies play three in three days. I bet Leddy and Kruger are loving life.

  • Black JEM

I’m hoping they settle down after the weekend. Lots of posturing going on right now. Both sides puffing out their chests. Fehr played the 3 response game and the NHL made the next move they needed to make – acknowledge the schtick for what it was. Walking out was probably the least damaging of what they could have done
I assume there are players and owners on each side with good enough relationships to try and see what might be possible while both sides are publicly pouting. The weekend will give us some time for that to happen if it can.
I will confess, I am worried. I thnk there is an ownership faction that wants to settle this – that is the other part of the NHL PR 50/50 offer the other day. I just don’t know if Fehr has anyone on his team who feels the same way. I hope so.

    • Joe Banks

My gut feeling is kiss 2012 goodbye. The players didn’t hire Fehr to kiss any asses. After a few more weeks (or months), when both sides are losing serious coin, hopefully they won’t be so quick to walk away in a huff. Best we can hope for is January 1, 2013. (give or take a few days)

    • http://whatisthebestadverb.wordpress.com/ I am not Chico Maki

      I’m guessing a 72-game season, beginning November 17. Why am I guessing that? Can’t say, it’s a secret.

  • adelfiacco10

I really hope a team with both the best pitcher and 3-4 combo in the majors is what it takes to finally drain Team Hilljack of whatever black magic it’s been abusing the last 2 seasons.

  • Joe Banks

Hey is this thing on? (haven’t been able to get on for a few weeks…)
Hey! My avatar seems to back too!

  • TheFullAmonte

Heading to the Ice Hogs game right now (living in Peoria, yeah it is totally awesome) and will probably provide some amateur analysis tomorrow morning whenever my hangover forces me to get out of bed (living in Peoria leads to lots of drinking). Excited to see how much the young Hawks care about this and hoping that some idiot pretends to be a blows fan so I can laugh at him. Either way you can’t beat free tickets.

  • girlphoenix

The “Hogs” radio feed is a Peoria broadcast. This is terrible.

    • girlphoenix

Of course I complain about it and it quits completely. I think the Hogs hate me this season.

      • pompoon

I just can’t believe I’ve been forced to listen to AHL games on internet radio. Damn this lockout.

Also, whoever is calling this game sounds like his nose was stapled to the back of his head.

        • girlphoenix

I think he’s getting/is sick. I’ve listened to a lot of Hogs games and his voice has been off today and Sunday. As the games get more exciting, his voice is more normal though.

  • girlphoenix

    Hogs you make me sad

  • TheFullAmonte

So as promised here are my observations from the Ice Hogs game last night. Bollig dropped the gloves on the opening faceoff so that was very useful. The first period was a well executed road period for the Hogs, with Hutton really standing tall in goal and making several outstanding saves. Leddy was easily the best player on the ice for all 3 periods, looking good with the puck skating past defenders into the zone, having an active stick on defense, and also being way more physical than he was for the Hawks. The first goal was a thing of beauty as Shaw and Pirri forechecked brilliantly with some beautiful passing (I kid you not it was a pretty goal we would be proud of if the Hawks scored it) with LeBlanc getting a tap in. 2nd period was a disaster and the intensity wasn’t really stepped up until late in the 3rd and no equalizer was found for the 2-1 loss. PK was good, PP was pretty terrible. As for players worth mentioning… Leddy was a monster as I said before, though he was paired with Stanton and not Olsen. Kruger and Hayes were very active, both looking impressive all over the ice even though they had to drag around Bollig most of the time on the top line. They didn’t get a goal but had several good chances and were the only ones able to keep the puck in the offensive zone consistently for long stretches, including a couple for over a minute. The Morin-St. Pierre-Smith line was mostly a disaster, usually getting outworked and spending most of the time on defense, though I believe this was the checking line. Ben Smith missed a sitter late in the third, and the line finished a deserved -1. Pirri’s line looked pretty good early, but disappeared later. Pirri (I think it was him, hard to remember now) got laid out at center ice in the first with an elbow to the head and was mostly invisible after that. LeBlanc jumped right in to fight dickbag Cole, and of course drew an instigator. Shaw was his typical annoying self which was good to see, and his defensive positioning remains improved, though he did take a stupid boarding penalty. Saad appeared to be on the 4th line skating 4th line minutes, so he was mostly a non factor, which was disappointing. He did end up on the ice with Hayes, Kruger, and Leddy at one point and for just under 2 minutes the puck stayed in the Rivermen zone, though they couldn’t quite get a goal out of it. On defense Olsen was solid, also more physical than he was in the NHL, getting called for a penalty he didn’t really deseve, but a good night for him position wise and with his body. He also made a great sliding play to break up a 2 on 1 which turned into a 3 on 2 which Saad then laid on the ice to break up. Stanton was nothing special, but playing with Leddy really made him look a lot better than the few times he was on the ice without him. Clendening was too small, too slow, and made a pass while on the PP right to a defending forwards stick and was only bailed out when his stick broke taking a shot on the ensuing breakaway. I don’t think Lebda ever did anything remotely productive. He was a disaster in his own end, passing to covered guys in front of his own net, getting beat in the corners, and decided to go to the bench when the Rivermen had the puck at center ice creating a 2 on 1. Lalonde was head and shoulders above Clendening, but that’s not really saying much as he didn’t appear to be very special either. Maybe 3 or 4 years from now he could be a 7th dman. The Hogs overall left the area in front of their own net unmarked a lot, were outshot 28-18 after two periods before the Rivs (why is that a thing?) sat back, and made a lot of risky passes in their own end. It was a disappointing but deserved result, as not enough of the bigger name guys played well. Sorry for how long this is as well.

    • birdhead

I really appreciate the recap, thanks dude!

    • Joe Banks

What is this love coach Dent has for Bollig? He even had him in the shootout last Saturday? (It has to be coming from higher up)

      • girlphoenix

I think Bollig was in the shootout because he had done okay in one in the preseason. Pretty sure I read that someone and didn’t just make it up.

  • Chesterfield King (Chelsdag)

Someone should sue bob ledonne for harassment

  • birdhead

    Dammit, IceHogs.

  • girlphoenix

Hogs, you are killing me. I just hope you know.

    • BodomSlayer

It was a lot of fun at the game…just really sloppy play. In reality they took a lot of penalties. It was fun ripping on Dan Ellis though.

      • girlphoenix

I slept through the first period (my ridiculous superstitious side says I should have slept through the entire thing and maybe the Hogs would have won) and when I got online I was truly shocked to see who was leading the team (at that point) in PIMs.

        • BodomSlayer

Your boy Benny had some pretty shady calls against him last night, I couldn’t blame for him them. The team was great in the first and flat in the second and third.

          • girlphoenix

I saw someone on twitter say the holding was borderline. I was really worried.

    • birdhead

Starting the season 0-3-1 is pretty gross. :( It sounded like a fun game to be at anyway although I think after the Phoenix playoff series I’m just completely over the whole last-two-minute-scramble-for-tying-goal thing.

  • birdhead

Saad scratched for the IceHogs again. That doesn’t give me a great feeling tbh.

    • girlphoenix

Alec Richards in net doesn’t give me a great feeling.

      • birdhead

Is he not too good? I don’t know anything about him, only that Hutton had a great week and no support from the offense, but I can see why you wouldn’t play him three nights in a row. Kind of wonder why they didn’t do Hutton-Richards-Hutton instead of Hutton-Hutton-Richards though.

        • girlphoenix

He’s not too terrible but I have more faith in Hutton.

Hutts is the starter. They’re going to have him for the home opener.

          • birdhead

Oh, I just have no idea what the schedule is, that’s my problem.

  • Flavius

Wow….this might be the choppiest feed in the history of ever

    • girlphoenix

the feed i found isn’t too bad. has checkers audio though so i’m having to stream the hog audio also and they don’t match up. the video is actually ahead of the audio which is weird

      • Flavius

Well, to be completely honest…..it probably didn’t help that I had about 9 windows plus Excel open….it’s better now, except for the Checkers’ audio…..GO HOGS!!!

        • girlphoenix

sooo many commercials is my big prob

  • Flavius

That Beach is a piece of work

    • girlphoenix

of COURSE it was a major penalty

  • girlphoenix

i’m proud of you hogs, you went 16 minutes without a penalty

  • Flavius

    Yay! Frenchie and Krugs!

    • girlphoenix

St. Pierre seems like a good pick up for the Hogs

  • girlphoenix

this video stream is so confusing. i have no idea what’s going on.

    • Flavius

      You’re a Towel

      • girlphoenix

        no you’re a towel!

    • justforkicks

video stream?! is there one for each game? and where could i find such a thing??

  • Flavius

    Ice Cream Sammich!

    • Flavius

      Or bowl of noodles….whatever.

  • Flavius

    Nice job, Pirri

  • girlphoenix

    boooo

    • Flavius

      now THAT was confusing

      • girlphoenix

        wrong net leds

  • girlphoenix

WHY DO YOU HATE HAPPINESS HOGS???!?!

    • Flavius

A Shorty right here will calm things down

  • Flavius

Is this game getting chippy? Or is Beach on the ice? Methinks both…

    • girlphoenix

Beach has a Very Particular Set of Skills.

  • Flavius

So, officially, St. Pierre is 5-9 190#

    • girlphoenix

to judge more what he looks like without the gear here’s a pic from the softball game they played the other day http://www.flickr.com/photos/rockfordicehogs/8098115906/in/set-72157631794008711/ he’s wearing the a blue shirt with red lettering. looks shorter than Mo and Ben

      • Flavius

I eyeballed him at maybe 5-8 180# when he skated out for the third period…..I might have been generous….meh, you don’t have to have size to be an effective player…..

        • girlphoenix

maybe they gave him some extra for his hair

  • 2883

    Anyone listening to the Icehogs?

    • girlphoenix

      it’s not going too terrible

      • 2883

I just turned it on, how is it going?

        • girlphoenix

not too many penalties today!! leddy scored a goal… in the wrong net. powerplay sucks

          • 2883

            HAYEESSSS

          • ahnfire

he’s being interviewed on the Hogs’ radio stream right now.

          • girlphoenix

he didn’t sound as bostony as usual. made me a little sad

          • 2883

            Is that aword? Bostony

          • ahnfire

so we’re never going to have a powerplay, is what you’re saying.

          • girlphoenix

            they did get one!

          • ahnfire

well, by powerplay, I mean the ability to score on the man-advantage. ;)

          • girlphoenix

no they got a ppg. i was shocked too

          • ahnfire

…what? are you sure it didn’t get called back for being illegal? you can’t do that.

          • girlphoenix

            that’s what i thought!

          • 2883

            And scored on it…

  • Flavius

    Frenchie to Hayes!!!! WOO-HOO!

    • Flavius

Whoops…..Frenchie I to Frenchie II to Hayes! WOO-HOO!

  • girlphoenix

    yay!!!

  • 2883

And then we give up a PP… Paradis with a hooking… lol

  • Flavius

    Fuck me….WTF

  • 2883

hah, Boychuk and Rask are good prospects…

  • girlphoenix

what do you have against winning?

  • Flavius

C’mon Leddy….pull some Bobby Orr shit here….it’s the AHL, dude

  • 2883

    Leddy just killed LeBlanc…

  • girlphoenix

an own goal and two ppg (((

  • 2883

Why was Saad scratched? Saw that him Clendening and 1 other was scratched?

    • girlphoenix

saad was scratched yesterday also, played on the 4th line friday. i think last time clenny played he wasn’t too great

      • 2883

Weird, dunno why they’d do that to Saad who played with the real Hawks last year…

  • 2883

    an Icehoggggggggssssss Powerplay………

  • 2883

WOOOOOOOO Hayyyyessssssss (2) from Lavin and St. Pierre

  • Guest

  • girlphoenix

    YYYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY

  • girlphoenix

    ANOTHER point for St Pierre

  • Guest

I take it it’s not Sheldon but his brother playing in the “A”?

    • girlphoenix

Yes, Wade. He is a forward and played for the Hogs last year also.

  • 2883

For those that care: Giants 4 Cardinals 0 in the Bot of hte 2nd.

  • 2883

    Lavin (PING!)

  • Flavius

That was sweet….was that Pirri on the pass?

  • 2883

    Bollig!?!

    • girlphoenix

      YES!

  • 2883

    Shaw @ Flav

    • Flavius

i see now…..nice, very nice….Bollig looks like a real hockey player with skills and stuff, more upside there than I thought perhaps

      • girlphoenix

People need to not hate on Bollig so much. Except for his being from St Louis. That is hateable.

        • Joe Banks

          OK… I will try…

  • 2883

Bollig (1) from Shaw + Kruger

  • girlphoenix

    ugh

  • Flavius

    Rockford wins! WOO-HOO

  • 2883

    Wooooooo Win…

  • ahnfire

yay, a win for the Hogs!

  • Sparky The Barbarian

In High School and College I was a baseball junkie. I could quote all the all time records and tell you who was first and second in major categories at any point during the season. These sorts of PR shenanigans in the 90′s are exactly why I am watching football tonight even though the NL playoffs are on. Somehow, they made me not care. I remain hopeful they can not make me not care about the NHL.

I remain confident that a deal will get done, though not supremely so. They seem to have gotten to an agreement on the major sticking points and are playing brinksmanship on the details because they can. Hopefully logic and common sense will prevail…

    … I just realized we’re fucked….

  • birdhead

Aw, looks like I missed an awesome third period. v glad for the win!

I know it’s the AHL and all but pointswise Kruger looks like he’s having a pretty good opening stretch. Does he look as good as his stats are?
