Time For The Dragon?

The Hawks’ world has been a bit abuzz today, as Joel Quenneville in an interview on The Score let it slip that the Hawks plan to bring Teuvo Teravainen over from Finland as soon as season with Jokerit ends to “give him a look.”

Here are the pertinent details. Jokerit has two more games this week in their regular season. They’re currently tied for 6th. In SM-Liiga, the top six automatically go into the quarterfinals while the 7th-10th placed teams have a mini-playoff for the last two spots in the quarters. Those preliminary playoffs are best-of-three, and I assume they start a couple days after the regular season ends. If Jokerit slips into 7th, conceivably Teuvo could be on his way to the States by next Friday. If they stay in sixth, the quarterfinals on through are best-of-seven, and it could be an additional week or month before Teuvo is free of Jokerit responsibilities. I have no idea what kind of threat they’re considered in the playoffs, and I haven’t seen what anyone else thinks either.

The murkier story is what “get a look” actually means. Is he just going to practice with the Hawks as a Black Ace? Is he going to Rockford for their playoff push? Is he going to get a few games with the Hawks to see if he can help in the playoffs? Or is he going the full monty as soon as he arrives a la Marcus Kruger? I don’t think anyone knows for sure.

My gut tells me he’ll practice for a week or so, and just might squeeze into a game or two, especially if the Hawks are entrenched in a certain spot in the division. If he looks good in those games, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s an option in the playoffs but not an automatic play.

The obstacles are clear. Has he ever played on a NHL-sized rink? It’s an adjustment. At his size, is he really ready to physically battle through the gauntlet that is late-season and playoff NHL hockey? Can he handle center in this league right away or will he be shifted out to a wing to ease the transition?

The skills are there for all to see. The hands and vision are most certainly NHL-level now. He’s a pretty good skater too, maybe he can get himself out of trouble often enough to be an asset right away. You dream of slotting him between Sharp and Hossa, the two wingers most able to make up for the physical and defensive shortcomings that Teuvo most certainly is going to have. You get giddy at the idea it will work, leaving Saad-Toews-Kane to simply tear a hole in the world on the top line. But it seems a longshot.

I don’t think there’s any question that TiVo Targaryn is going to be a productive NHL-er and quite possibly more. And it’s probably not all that far down the road. But I think the idea of him contributing this year should be more in the “hope” category than “expectation.”

But if he can help, he can help. The Hawks aren’t in the development business, at least not at this level. As I repeatedly said at the deadline, the only shot at the Cup the Hawks are guaranteed is this one right here. If Teuvo can aid in that, he should play, whatever mess his contract clock starting would create down the road. I’m excited to get our first look at Tivo in red. I’m just not holding my breath it’s going to mean all that much this season.

Update: Jokerit only has one game left, and that’s Thursday. I can’t seem to find any info on when the preliminary playoffs would begin if Jokerit are in them. I suppose if they biff it Teuvo could be on a plane by Tuesday or Wednesday.

    Enter the Dragon!

    • Bob Lanz

Time for dragons with four feathers images!

  • Bob Lanz

Sam I think your defending your previous opinion too much. The fact is Q said he will play here once he is done in Finland, couple that with Stanbo’s comments post Olympic break and I believe they are telling us the truth without any reason to ” read between the lines” . Dragon boy is coming what’s does that mean well I think it means playing time. It’s not an unprecedented concept. You even pointed out Marcus Krueger situation I will go back a bit farther when JR came up in time for playoff hockey. TT welcome and happy to have you aboard. Sam it’s ok to be optimistic and hopeful and I for one am getting my hopes up! Let’s go Hawks!!!

    • cliffkoroll

I think it was Neo who said that, since he’s 19, he burns a year off of his ELC if he plays in 10(?) or more games. I say the Hawks should get at least nine games outta TT, then go from there.

      • Bob Lanz

Agreed, and after nine I think we may see it’s more than worth it… And screw the contract concerns he is an NHL ready talent

      • Bobby Otter

Are those 10 games only regular season or regular + playoffs?

        • zacked

          It’s both.

          • Bobby Otter

Got it. So burn a year, and he’s an RFA after the ’16 season and the Kane/Toews contracts have already kicked in (hopefully) and Seabrook is a UFA. Don’t burn a year and he’s an RFA with Sharp and Bickell (and Bollig!) as UFAs.

Seems to me if he’s ready to go and burning the year increases the Hawks chances of winning the Cup go from 10% to 13% seems like it’s worth it, no? (odds via http://www.hockey-reference.com/friv/playoff_prob.cgi)

        • cliffkoroll

10? Where do you get ten from? It’s 7-minute abs!

I keed. I think playoff games count.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Well, you know, there’s always, of course, 6-minute abs.

          • 10thMountainFire

Are you sure? I was of the assumption that playoffs did not count towards his ELC.

          • cliffkoroll

            I’m not sure. When I’m sure, I don’t say ‘I think’, I ooze condescension.

More credible sources seem to have confirmed this though.

          • 10thMountainFire

Well this sucks. I had dreams of Druce Deuce.

          • ChicagoNativeSon

I can confirm that, yes indeed, you do ooze condescension.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Also, he puffs into the air with his condescension spores.

      • zacked

It’s nine games. Which is why I think (and agree) that he’ll only get 9 regular season games this year, max.

        • Bob Lanz

          Really?!

        • VerStig

          What’s wrong with TT?

          • zacked

I don’t understand either of these replies.

          • Bob Lanz

Nicknames! What is this asoiaf your referring too and what’s wrong with dragon targaryn

          • zacked

A Song of Ice and Fire.

I don’t like the nickname ’cause it has nothing to do with the player, it’s just two long foreign names that start with T.

          • Bob Lanz

So no dragon references cause Martin book has nothing to do with the chosen one. Red wedding line enough said

          • zacked

I just hope for something better is all.

            Dragon is from Teuvo Targaryan.

          • zacked

            Yes. Still bad.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

I’m ok with House of Dragons or Son of Dragons, but not into the singular Dragon epithet.

          • zacked

From now on I’m only referring to him as Tëüvö Hënrï Mätïäs Tëräväïnën.

          • thatshortkid

hmmm….. Teuvo Teravainen…. T… T… TT. Ah, so “Sweater Kitten” then.

    • Jim A

Last year they brought in LeBlanc to take a look at him and he barely made it through the first period. but there’s no comparison with Roenick. JR played half the season in junior, where he dominated (goal & assist per game) and played 20 NHL regular season games, where he scored a point per game.
I hope he comes in and helps. But I have to admit I’m not expecting him to handle everything coming his way like a veteran.

      • Bob Lanz

And TT is doing the same in Finland since the world juniors where he also dominated. Ok JR played twenty games before the playoffs. By all accounts TT may see 10 before the playoffs start. That’s enough for me and I think for the stache and Stan to figure if he is ready

  • cliffkoroll

Lots of questions. Here are some answers:

    Yes.
    I hope not.
Rockford? Get the fuck outta here.
    Yes please.
    Why not?
    Yes, during pre-season.
    Yeah. He’s young and resilient.
    Center, please.

    • Bob Lanz

Cliffy you hit on the dragons head my feeble old frent

  • CozBullsFan

I’m giddy as hell after hearing this news. It’s like I’m 5 years old again and it’s Christmas morning.

    • Bob Lanz

I’m not gonna lie I’m a little erect

  • Accipiter

Centre is where he should be given a chance to see what he can bring to the Hawks, especially if it is still in the regular season. If he is given time at wing, which wing ? LW ? With what linemates ? It gets more complicated to not try him as a centre, to me anyway.

    Thoughts ? Anyone ?

    • Z-man19

      I concur.

    • cliffkoroll

Yes. Learn how to fucking spell center.

      • Accipiter

        Pivot ?

        • Z-man19

cliff is the new pivot man? Sweet

          • Bob Lanz

That’s my freaking job and I’m not relinquishing it! Let hi take the point

          • 10thMountainFire

Get on the TCI Beginner’s Guide. Back-up pivot man.

          • Z-man19

it appears he’d be the back-up to the back-up, Lanzer has taken over

          • 10thMountainFire

Not exactly the job to fight over.

          • Bob Lanz

That’s right Lanzer has the pivot, it’s a tough job but I got a handle on it! Two hands actually

      • CozBullsFan

        heh

      • bizarrohairhelmet

If you have to spell during it, you’re doing it wrong.

    • Bob Lanz

Yes Center! Not wing not ease him in not anywhere but the second line. He is the real deal dammit just plug him in where he belongs and let the dragon skate!

      • Accipiter

        Your enthusiasm offends me.

        I’ll allow it.

        • Bob Lanz

No reason not to be. Seriously by all accounts and the limited time I have witnessed him in person on our ice he is ready, and better than others on the ice. Skating Stick handling puck possession passing did I mention skating if he can score here…. Omg I’m gonna soil myself in the good way!

  • Z-man19

Not to be a stick in the mud, but they still need some cap space to fit him in, do they not? Is there anyone left on the roster with a 2 way contract?

    • Bob Lanz

Stop being reasonable! This is TT dragon boy TiVo Targaryn of the skating dragon clan… Just waive some not needed space savers. Brookbank, or better Bollig

      • Z-man19

I’m going to assume it can be done since both Stan and Q have mentioned it, but I would like to know how.

        • Bob Lanz

How is not important only why? Cause he is Dragon Boy!

      • Potts

This would explain the addition of Runblad, as Zus is the only other option. That NMC prevents Bowman from doing so.

    • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

It will be pro-rated for the games he is here for. Only regular season games count in formulating the Cap, the playoffs do not.

      • Z-man19

capgeek has the Hawk’s AAV space at $52,000 right now, Dragon would make $925,000

        • Bob Lanz

Prorate that and then waive Bollig

          • Z-man19

I’ve been wrong about the cap so many times I shouldn’t say this but waiving Bollig does not appear to be enough

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Who ever is sent away, their Hit comes off the books pro-rated as well.

          • Bob Lanz

So it would still make me happy

        • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Somebody gets sent back to the Rock?

          • Z-man19

Who can go without clearing waivers? Rundbland only makes $785k

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

I don’t know Cap Geek appears broken right now.

          • Z-man19

it appears to be working for me. I know the roster expands but you still have to be under the cap right? Can they move someone off the 23 man roster and not have to pass them through waivers?

          • Bob Lanz

            Bollig

          • Z-man19

            Chrome works just fine

          • Bob Lanz

It’s Bollig he sent in a virus, he doesn’t want anyone to figure out that he is the most likely and reasonable salary to waive in order to wait for it… Enter the Dragon!

          • Z-man19

No, Zus is the best candidate for making space for Dragon Boy.

          • 10thMountainFire

In that case, better get Zus started out the door now so he’s completely out of the room by the time April rolls around.

          • Bob Lanz

            I’m ok with this too

          • Bob Lanz

            I’m ok with this

          • Bobby Otter

Well the Hawks are over the cap right now according to Cap Geek.

          • lizmcneill

No they aren’t, did you forget to subtract Khabi? (wish Stan had subtracted Khabi)

          • 10thMountainFire

You want me to subtract Khabi out back and dump him in the ocean?

          • Bobby Otter

            I did. Good call. Mathfail

        • M7

shouldn’t he be able to get in 4 games under the cap (pro-rated value of ~$11.5k/game) if nothing else changes (other than knocking down the roster from 23-22 in order to accomodate his arrival)?

          • Z-man19

there is no prorating when you have been over the cap due to LTIR. They can fit a guy in right now if he makes $52,000 in a year, so no one.

          • M7

Thanks for explaining. I didn’t realise that was the rule.

          • Z-man19

That’s the only thing I’m sure of. I don’t know what teams can do when the rosters expand, I’m sure you still have to be under the cap but I don’t know what they can do as far as moving guys on and off the 23 man roster.

          • Accipiter

Is that still a problem in the playoffs ?

          • Z-man19

I don’t know, where the hell is neo? I’m 95% sure the cap still exists in the playoffs, I’m just not sure how you can move guys on and off the roster or who applies to the cap

          • ahnfire

I don’t think the cap exists during the playoffs, because players don’t get “paid” for the playoffs.

          • Z-man19

Hello Ahn. I’m not sure that excuses the cap though

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

The Cap exists, but IIRC, you are allowed to have additional roster spots and another goalie who do NOT count against the Cap, but your normal roster (before the Black Aces), based on regular season games still has to be below the upper limit.

          • neo1978

            I’ll answer the easy ones:

There is no salary cap in the playoffs.

There is no 23 man upper limit after the trade deadline.

Players loaned, return to the 50 man roster after the affiliated team’s season ends. The playoff roster can be almost anyone from the 50 man roster with a couple of exceptions. Example. players picked up on waivers after the trade deadline aren’t eligible. Huet on the other hand was eligible for the playoffs when he was returned to the 50 man roster. In fact, I don’t think there is anybody on the current Hawks 50 man roster that isn’t eligible.

Black aces is an honorary term for players on the 50 man limit but not the active roster that practice with the team. So TT can be a black ace and not burn a year on the ELC. It is only if he plays 10 games (combined season and postseason).

As for the hard part, nobody understands roster changes after the initial LTIR moves. It simply isn’t explained and all the misinformation out there including cap geek, btw, make it even more difficult.

          • Bob Lanz

Z our is not to wonder why, but to only to root for the dragon flying high! Scoring goals and sic passing skillz. Skating through defenders and racking up goalie killz!

I just cannot get that worked up of this. Until I see him play in North American games that matter, I am not going to go all “he is the one, the piece, the part to finish it all”.
I am interested in what he brings and what he can do, but lets be real about it. He has not taken 1 faceoff in a NHL game that counts, against teams full of NHL caliber players all playing FOR something, unlike the preseason.

    • Bob Lanz

So…. I fail to see your point. This is unmitigated joy and prosperity time. No using logic and reality to bring us all down. We are high on Finnish prospect and second line center hope. Stop being such a buzz kill dude!

I’ll place my bet on this: The kid will replace Zus for a game to see how he does. If our playoff position is set, he’ll play more. If it’s not set, he won’t play again. Unless he’s phenomenal in his one appearance.

Are these line combos out of the question?

    Saad-Toews-Shaw

    Kane-Sharp-Hossa

    Versteeg-Handzus-Bickell

    Bollig-Kruger-Smith

Sharp worked well at center in 2010, I just don’t understand why they don’t at least try him there. I heard there was some sort of silent agreement when he signed his new contract that he’d only play wing? Anyone else hear that? I can’t imagine another reason why they wouldn’t at least try it again.

Of course if TiVo works out, none of it matters.

    • birdhead

Out of the question in terms of “are these players physically capable of playing these roles”, no, but I think in terms of probability very unlikely. If you were going to see Sharp at centre it would have happened already and I don’t think Kane has played very much on the left at all. (Also, I personally think Hossa only really wants to play with Toews, but that is just my suspicion).

      • Z-man19

Who doesn’t want to play with Captain?

        • birdhead

        • birdhead

          Yup.

        • VerStig

And isn’t he 2nd or 3rd in the league in shots on goal?

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            3rd

    • YoAdrienne

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who thought about Sharp going back to center. I don’t know about any deal being made, but I have heard that he strongly prefers to play on the wing. I suspect that if TT doesn’t work out, they may resort to some arm-twisting on Sharpie’s part. However, forcing Sharp to play a position he doesn’t like might not be any better than Regin, who I don’t think has been all that bad, IMHO.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

Sharp moves to Center ONLY in the event something disastrous happens like we lose Cap’n. As others have said, if Joel thought it was a long term solution, Sharp would already be there.

        • YoAdrienne

Yeah, I pretty much agree with that. I think Regin has been a more acceptable solution. Better him than someone who hasn’t played C in a long time, and doesn’t want to play C. Like I said, I don’t think he’s been all that bad. Not perfect by any means, but he’ll do for now.

          • birdhead

There is no indication that he doesn’t want to play C. Everything he’s said on record is that he’s fine with it. The other is pretty much just rumours as far as I can tell.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

I recall him saying it wasn’t his ideal spot. It was a few years ago, maybe in the 11-12 season.

          • birdhead

Well maybe I was just talking out of my ass.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

That’s a skill many people would buy tickets to see.

          • YoAdrienne

Yeah, I read the same fairly recently. Might have been an old article, however. I just remember him saying he’s much happier on the wing.

          • ahnfire

Sharp has stated that he preferred wing but he’ll play any spot the team wanted him to.

      • Preacher

Arm twisting? Seriously? These guys will play wherever they’re told. The players have virtually no say in any of this. Look what happened when Stals complained about more ice time.

        • bizarrohairhelmet

Stals asked Q if he could date one of Q’s daughters.

          • Z-man19

I think he mentioned mating with her

          • ChicagoNativeSon

Something about a sandwich and her playing 2C between him and Sharp.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            I’m sure Q’s mustache-sense is tingling.

        • YoAdrienne

Remind me again why Stahlberg wasn’t getting the ice time. It wasn’t because he was being forced to play in a position he didn’t like. And, do you really think he had the same sort of standing on the team as Patrick Sharp? Sharp is one of the teams core players, and he wears an “A” on his jersey. And, unlike Stahlberg, he’s also one of the team’s top scorers. While he may not have the ultimate say-so in when and where he plays, I find it very hard to believe he would not have at least some say-so in the matter.

    • Commit88

Kane can’t play left wing. Or center.

Having spent a lot of teenage hours reading epic fantasy of varying nerd-levels and literary value, I have been avoiding the work of George R R Martin since people still called it ASOIAF. I still kind of resent how much I enjoy the TV show actually.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Just so we’re clear on the true nerddom hierarchy, I had to google “ASOIAF” … which is to say, only one of us had the acronym at the ready.

(I am thinking about reading it, though, I’ve had a few reliable recommendations … I’ve enjoyed the show way more than I thought I would.)

          • birdhead

It takes one to know one, you see.

I basically think that everyone’s personal literary diet needs only so much epic fantasy, and I don’t need George R R Martin in mine because I had Tad Williams (who imo is a better smarter and more reliable, timely writer, not that I’m biased), but ASOIAF is pretty popular and it’s probably fun to know what’s going to happen next. Plus they’re available. Can’t really go wrong, unless of course GRRM dies before he finishes the series like Robert Jordan did.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Boo. That’s like mentioning a shutout before it’s happened.

          • birdhead

Alternatively, he could pull a Melanie Rawn, and just never fucking finish the trilogy you’re super invested in. STOP WRITING OTHER BOOKS AND GIVE ME THE CAPTAL’S TOWER, MS RAWN

          • guest

Makes me feel like an asshole saying it, but Jordan’s passing was probably the only thing that got that series wrapped up. Judging by relatively how much plot development got jammed into the ghostwritten finale books… If Jordan were alive today, we’d still be 3 books and 8 years away from the end.

          • birdhead

Like you, I feel pretty gross saying it, but I agree. I still haven’t gotten around to A Memory of Light, but in the first two Sanderson books a shitload of things happened and looking at the pacing of Winter’s Heart/Crossroads of Twilight I have no particular belief that RJ could have done that. I also thought Sanderson did a lot to revert characters to some vague semblance of their original characterisation which, as a fan of some characters who had gotten pretty distant from what I fell in love with, I really enjoyed.

      • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

        I agree,
That way we can get back to the important stuff like how luck is really more stats in the micro range that each themselves quantify additional data to assist in understanding the game, and how QoS is the largest single important stat that is simply ignored by many just because no number is assigned to it, even though most all Coaches openly state its importance and it effects most aspects and stats of the game.

    • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Geez, man. I’d have to guess thousands. A single exact number, though? The technological revolution alone … there are probably thousands right there. Of course, any answer will depend on the definition of “significantly.” I bet you in the realm of hockey alone there are at least one/two hundred, and in the NHL likely 15 or so. But ya, I’d probably just guess something generic, something a bit provocative maybe, like 80,000. Eighty thousand 19-year-olds have contributed something of significance over the last half decade.

      Discuss.

      • Z-man19

80,000 seems pretty low considering there’s probably what 30-40 mil worldwide in that age range

        • Z-man19

          More like 100 mil

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Well, given that number, I’d have to say at least 15 or 16 have had a noticeable impact within the last 5 years.

See, this is just what I mean, and what I was afraid might happen … we’re probably ultimately arguing over our definitions of “significantly.” Let’s split the difference. Roughly 15/20 million, or 50 million if I’m responding to your next post below.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

I’m his height and 160-165. Kane appears to be a bit bigger this season as well… and that’s four years on from ‘Couver. Teuvo will be fine if he’s with a Hossa or a Saad. I’m con-fer-dent.

          • MattC86

Oh, I’m not that worried. I am only worried about his size as a 19-year old coming over to play in the Western Conference playoffs, in the most brutal series of coalitions and battles since the Napoleonic Wars.

Starting next year as a full-time NHLer I’m not worried.

The invasion of Crimea, conducted in 1854, hinged largely on the production of Finnish 19-year old import soldiers. The Russians lost the tournament due to mismanagment of the cap at the end of the battle.

Also – Dragon Boy’s possible Chicago arrival = less than 1/2 a Bollig. I fear for us all.

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Speaking of Dragons, we don’t have HBO, so we’re catching up with Game of Thrones season 3 on Netflix. It’s been tense, but based on the title, I’m assuming tonight’s episode is a quiet reflective, introspective with relatively little drama, The Rains of Castomere.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

It’s mostly a build-up for the next episode and light-hearted, but the info is pertinent so it needs to be watched closely.

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Before we get all giddy, remember that this probably isn’t even Dragon Boy’s audition to make the payoff roster, it is his audition to get invited to camp next year. Still looking forward to it.

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

That is not remotely accurate. He’s already signed an ELC, he was at training camp last year, and ‘Hawks brass is downright giddy about the kid. They said before this season started that he’d be playing in North America next year, either Rockford or up in the bigs, so the idea that there’s a chance of him not being invited to camp next year is absurd.

Good thing we have a roster of future Hall of Famers to keep us happy in case Teuvo isn’t an all-star… right away.

  • Paul the Fossil

Right now the Hawks, Blues, Avs and Ducks have all played 65 games. Blues have 95 points, Ducks 93, Hawks 90, Avs 89. Also the Sharks have 91 points in 66 games played. Gonna be a dogfight for playoff position as well as for the President’s Trophy for whatever that’s worth (the Pens, and/or maybe the Bruins, are also in the mix on that last part).

Unfortunately the Hawks stand to lose the first tiebreaker (ROW) to any of those other Western teams except San Jose.

  • Paul the Fossil

Lambert thinks pretty highly of Dragon-boy’s potential impact, see item 4 of his weekly “power rankings”:
    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/puck-daddy-power-rankings–rules-changes–rich-peverley-and-canucks–swoon-133527191.html

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

Lambert has been drooling all over TT’s potential for a while now. He’s a Flames fan and is incredibly pissed that the Flames elected to not take him with the 14th pick in the 2012 draft and instead trade down to the 21st pick where they took Mark Jankowski, thus allowing TT to slip to the ‘Hawks who picked 18th

    • VanDorp’sMullet

I thought Lambert’s point about Peverly was a really good one: he was likely disoriented and acting more on script (i.e.–saying something he may have said/heard said 1000 times before) than being a heroic tough guy by asking to go back in the game. That being said, thank the almighty Hossa he is okay and the real heroes here are the fast-acting doctors who saved his life. Major kuddoes to them!

      • Waylon

indeed. The medical staff really swung into action and prevented what could have been a terrible outcome. Hope that Peverly takes an honest assessment before deciding to lace up the skates again. Everyone who’s played with the guy really likes him, but I’d hate to see him put his long term health into question. This did not seem like a one – off event.

        • VanDorp’sMullet

Yes. He was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat in the preseason, right? That diagnosis coupled with this recent event should give him serious, serious, serious pause about ever playing the game at this level again.

  • ChicagoNativeSon

Not to add to the hysteria…

“Teravainen showing up in Chicago is borderline unfair to the rest of the league. He’s already one of the best players of his age (just 19) in the world, and when he gets to the NHL in the next few weeks, he looks like he’ll add some serious scoring pop for the Blackhawks’ second line, which y’know already featuresPatrick Kane. That doesn’t seem very fair at all.”

That makes me sick to my stomach. Bad organization, top to bottom… and working men and women pay for poor management. Hating Vancouver is righteous. Vanquished!

      • VanDorp’sMullet

The Canucks org is as tone-deaf now as the Blackhawks used to be under Dollar Bill. How idiotic is it that they can’t send out their season ticket renewal letter because the team sucks so bad and then they shoot themselves in the foot by firing 1000 people? Do they have zero idea of how to run a team? And poor Eddie Lack. What did he ever do to deserve his situation? Ugh.

This whole thing makes me has a sad until I think of all the bad karma they’ve built up as a team over the years. Just sad that 1000 people had to also catch the shrapnel of an exploding organization.

        • 10thMountainFire

Ryan Kesler is going to go AWOL.

          • Waylon

Judging by his recent play, I honestly think he won’t. He seems to be the only player on the ice that gives two sh-ts about what’s happening out there.

          • 10thMountainFire

Maybe he just cries himself to sleep, then?

        • bizarrohairhelmet

I imagine at least some of the 1,000 whose contracts were terminated will get a decent chance to work in the workforce the Canucks are creating, so I don’t think it is quite as dark as it first sounds for those workers. OTOH, there are more than a few Nuck fans that did have this coming and that’s the part that I find hilarious.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

True, I’d imagine they’ll be hiring from the same pool of people and that many of those who were fired will get jobs… still, it’s totally tone-deaf and sucks for those who won’t have their jobs.

But don’t get me wrong, I am rubbing my hands in delight Montgomery Burns style at the demise of this pathetic and classless franchise and the part of their fanbase that puts the “meat” in meatball.

      • Paul the Fossil

Well now hold on — the party getting fired is the contractor, Aramark. Evidently the Canucks management and/or the arena management concluded that Aramark’s service could be better. Clearly they’re still going to provide concessions either with a different contractor or directly themselves, which means the jobs will still exist. They’re not eliminating 1,000 jobs; the only jobs which will actually cease to exist are those of the Aramark senior managers on this particular large contract who (apparently) weren’t doing a great job.

        • 10thMountainFire

I simply try not to side with decisions like this and assume ‘well, those who made the decision were well-informed and acting in the best interests of the company’. Especially because that franchise has a history of making decisions that four-year olds would find stupid.

          • Bullitt315

The arena and hockey operations sides are separate management. If the UC switched contractors, the Blackhawks management wouldn’t be on the line. Granted “Canucks Sports and Entertainment” as a name makes it a bit confusing but this isn’t a GMMG decision.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Makes total sense.

          • Bullitt315

As I’ve also tried to explain before, this is part of the reason why the Blackhawks lose money. All (or at least a lot) the concession stuff goes to the arena side and parking probably does too.

    • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

As the resident Capitalist, perhaps the Canucks can/have find a more profitable contract? Whoever comes in is also going to have to hire (perhaps rehire) workers to do the job. Perhaps it may even be better for all concerned? In short, though it sucks now, it may be the best option.

      • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Until that profitable contract proves unprofitable, at which point they can ignore that one, too.

        • Paul the Fossil

We don’t know who’s right about the early-termination question. A lot of contracts have such a provision and a lot don’t. If Aramark can legitimately show that this one doesn’t then presumably the management will have to back off.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Indeed. If they’re backing away, surely there’s a provision. It’s the lot of the thousand that angers me, not the legal justification.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

But what about the 1000 jobs that will be generated with the new contract?

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

I’m not saying that there will be a net loss of jobs, tmff. I’m saying that the number “1000″ is a number. It represents real, breathing people, and that really sucks because it’s highly likely, imo, that it isn’t their fault. If you have a job and are doing it well and are fired … everything’s put in back in balance if I am hired into that position?

          • cliffkoroll

But what the 1000 who are now employed? Ah, the seen vs. the unseen.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

I’m not choosing this one to go ape-shit over, but jobs aren’t math equations. 1000 jobs gained doesn’t equal 1000 jobs lost, there’s no balance there. They’re two different, unrelated stories. In my eyes, it’d be similar to measuring 1000 deaths alongside 1000 births. There’s a net balance of zero, but the zero is hardly the heart of the story.

I’m not sure what your point is, and I don’t want to misinterpret it.

Above you said “It’s the lot of the thousand that angers me.” Are you angry with someone in particular, and if so, who and why?

Ignore, no; Terminate, of course (per the terms). The job is to make money, not lose it!?!

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

I don’t know who’s at fault, and yes, the aim is to make money. I find it increasingly hilarious, though, that things like this happen … either Aramark or the Canucks fuck up, the contract gets ripped, and 1000 people lose their job through no fault of their own.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

It happens yes, but 1000 new jobs will fill it right back up. If the service sucked and was killing the profit and the atmosphere, well good on the Canucks.

If my photo print supplier sucks, I am not going to keep them because of their jobs. I will use another and support hose jobs with business. I am worried about my finished product and how I can make money off of it. The Canucks are just doing the same I imagine.

          • 10thMountainFire

            YES.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

In terms of employment numbers, nothing changes. This may be true. It’s possible a few of the thousand who are to be fired see it a bit differently. And if the service sucked, I feel comfortable saying it had little to do with the 1000 people who are to be fired and a lot to do with Aramark’s management of those people. Unless you somehow believe that the new thousand employees will somehow be chosen from graduate school lists and not the exact same pile of resumes (effectively) as Aarmark looked at.

          • Waylon

These days those jobs may just be filled by graduate students. Live around Portland for awhile, most of the service folk are at minmum college graduates.

          • cliffkoroll

I’d understand if you said you were saddened by this news. But to me, the idea that just because someone loses their job, there’s some jagbag suit who screwed up and should be blamed is…I dunno…simplistic?

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

You’re definitely right–no doubt, it’s a pretty complex situation and we can’t know half of it. More simplistic, though, to my mind, is that some mass collection of guys schlepping pizzas and beers to hungry hockey fans is somehow to blame. Given the three (very) general scenarios of fault–Nucks ownership; Aramark management; and a thousand guys yelling “hot dogs here” … I feel okay jumping on the first two.

          • birdhead

It’s not efficient to fire a whole lot of people and then rehire them. Come on, be a better capitalist.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Monty Burns summed up Capitalism best with “I’d give it all away for a little bit more.”

          • Bullitt315

It is if you can handle to hire them in-house.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Come on, it is different companies not the same one. The Canucks have a contract with one company, not the employees directly. The company did not do the service needed to keep the contract so it goes to another company who will need to fill the need of employees to provide the agreed to service. So the Canucks did not fire anybody except the services of a company. The company who lost the contract will have to layoff the people if required. So in the end, it does not effect the efficiency of the Canucks, it may improve it with a new provider. Now Amarak, well yeah it is not efficient to lose a contract like that one and have to fire people.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Heaven knows I’ve walked away from concession stands at various arenas over the decades muttering about the contractor urgently needing to be shitcanned. (Though not the UC particularly.)

        • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

The UC … home to the same dead pizza you keep in your freezer, but you get to pay 10 times more because you also get a paper plate and napkin.

          • Paul the Fossil

True, and I avoid having to buy food while there. But that’s pretty much true of every arena everywhere at least on this continent.

          • 10thMountainFire

Comiskey Park’s food has a well-earned reputation for being very good.

          • Bullitt315

Last time I went, MIller park had really good food. Last time I went to Wrigley, I got food poisoning.

          • Waylon

Wrigley has been the worst since I was quite little – hey, how about a stale, warm $8 beer to go along with your $6 hotdog? I have to say that I went to a SF Giants baseball game, and the concessions there were excellent. A Rockies game about ten years ago was of a similar experience.

          • Paul the Fossil

Well yea actually that’s true about Pac Bell in SF, been there a couple of times. The pricing was still monopolistic of course but the range and quality of offerings was much better than at most arenas.

And US Cellular is probably somewhat above-average in the same regard, though its food reputation is partly a leftover from the old Comiskey.

          • Waylon

Yeah, the cost was ridiculous, but that was to be expected. Never saw sushi on a ballpark menu before, to be quite honest. Don’t like the stuff, but my wife loves it and thought it was of decent quality. The old Comiskey was awesome, first time I’d ever had a stuffed pretzel. Andy the Clown was pretty cool as well (I was twelve), Not to mention the showers in the stands.

I think the relative merits of what the management is doing is being obscured because of the timing. They’re acting a little Dollar Bill – ian in this aspect. “Please renew your tickets because blah, blah, blah. Oh and BTW, we’re firing 1K workers as well – because we’re committed to saving more money so we can sign more bad players to ridiculous contracts, or something. Bad PR move, I think.

        • Bullitt315

I’m guessing this is something Building management has been planning for awhile and it just happened to coincide horribly with hockey operations biffing everything up on the other side.

          • Waylon

works for me. But doesn’t it just reek of something DB would have done? Reminds me of the story when the most successful coach in the organization’s history allegedly found out about his unexpected firing by having a typed note shoved under his home’s front door in the morning.

          • Bullitt315

Ultimately they have the same owner so it’s something the he could have stepped in on out of pettiness or “to shake things up” It’s certainly possible, but I doubt it’s likely.

So, does Vancouver survive the night after the Jets win tonight?

    • 10thMountainFire

If Disqus were a city, it would be Vancouver.

      • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

        St Louis, surely.

  • 10thMountainFire

You know what sucks, though? Disqus.

    • Accipiter

      Not for generating pageviews.

      • 10thMountainFire

Capitalists should be competing to replace Disqus. LiveFyre? Anything.

        • Waylon

I’m amazed that no other competitive software has been introduced yet. Considering all of the blogs forced to use this stuff, there must be a decent market for another competitor.

          • 10thMountainFire

The Facebook connection option would be the alternative I believe. Not a fan of that, either.

          • Bullitt315
          • 10thMountainFire

            That thing is beyond creepy.

          • birdhead

            then we’d know everyone’s names :-/ gross :-/

          • 1benmenno

Just because you don’t like people knowing your real name, Engelbertina, doesn’t mean the rest of us mind.

          • birdhead

Hey, I don’t mind you guys knowing my name, but I don’t want to know *yours* …

          • 1benmenno

For the record, my real name is Burt Head. So I’m suing you.

          • birdhead

But i don’t have a cousin called Burt

          • 1benmenno

            A long lost uncle, maybe?

          • birdhead

I actually have a couple of those, because my grandfather was a disgusting philanderer, but I don’t think any of them are named Burt.

          • 1benmenno

My great uncle was a guy by the name of Phil Anderer.

          • birdhead

Burt Head, for the record, is within three letters of being my actual name, so that was quite a creepy comment to read originally …

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            the disgusting one?

          • 1benmenno

            No, the other one.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Your uncle, of whom you hold a high opinion, is the incorrigible Phil Anderer?

          • 1benmenno

            For whom.

          • Z-man19

            Bunt or Burt?

          • 1benmenno

            Butt Hurt.

          • Z-man19

            Richard Hurt

          • 1benmenno

            Dick Buttsmooch.

          • Accipiter

C’mon, you know you want to know Why by his real name.

          • 1benmenno

            Who?

          • birdhead

            *shudder*

          • VerStig

I really want to give this a shot. Started reading about writing WordPress plugins a couple months ago since I know PHP and I believe TCI uses WordPress, but alas life keeps getting in the way.

Even just to get the “z” key functionality in there would be a win, provided intellectual property issues with Vox Media (owners of SBNation) can be avoided.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Use the “N” key, for NEXT

    • Joe Banks

      DicQus does indeed suck.

  • Preacher

Don’t know if this was mentioned somewhere else already, but thought this was fun since it came from outside our little blog world. From Puck Daddy Power Rankings:

“Teravainen showing up in Chicago is borderline unfair to the rest of the league. He’s already one of the best players of his age (just 19) in the world, and when he gets to the NHL in the next few weeks, he looks like he’ll add some serious scoring pop for the Blackhawks’ second line, which y’know already features Patrick Kane. That doesn’t seem very fair at all.”

  • ChicagoNativeSon

    Dear Vancouver:

If you think this has a happy ending, you haven’t been paying attention.

    -Ramsay Snow

    • bizarrohairhelmet

So they’ve already lost their rooster (Lu). Who does the bastard take next, the two prince jewels?

  • 1benmenno

So we’re agreed. TT is the anointed one; and Disqus is the anti-Christ. And Facebook is worse.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

birdhead doesn’t want to see our selfies; and

      • 1benmenno

Okay, smart guy. Finish your sentence. I eventually

        • bizarrohairhelmet

date each of my cows, so none of the get lonely. The magistrate says

          • 1benmenno

to err is human, to forgive bovine.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

So when you said my mom was a cow, you meant that she was a forgiving person. I’ll accept that.

          • 1benmenno

I never said that. I only meant that she had had her Phil.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

What does Phil Kessel have to do with this?

          • 1benmenno

Ask BHH. He’s the one dissing his own mama.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Kessel, no. She calls her Phil “Mr. Osophy” for some reason.

          • 1benmenno

I’m not going to make mama jokes with a Texan. As my pappy always told me, never bring a rake to a gunfight.

          • Z-man19

bhh lives in Texas, that does not make him Texan

          • bizarrohairhelmet

well, I was also born here and lived over half my life here…but I don’t really consider myself a Texan since I’ve lived pretty much as far East, West, South and North (contiguous) as you can in the US.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

            Do you pronounce Texas, “Tay-hoss”?

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Only when I’m listening to the album
