      I think Longterm IR is the miss a certain amount one. Which takes them off of cap space (I think).

            I think teams only use LTIR if the player is gone for a year or more because once the player is cleared to play you will have to get back under the salary cap

      I offer dissent. I say leave it an option, they are only jeopardizing their health and nobody else’s by not wearing them. If them not wearing a visor and getting injured immediately jeopardized the safety of another player I would probably be in favor.

            I have one functional eye, I’m lucky, I was born this way, there was no adjustment for me. A hockey player losing sight out of one eye, even partially, say goodbye to hockey. I really can’t understand why everyone doesn’t wear one.

        The league and teams have an interest in keeping the players healthy. The players draw fans – they’re commodities. Players who lose eyes don’t play, don’t draw fans, don’t make money.

        They’re jeopardising the financial investment of the team that employs them though. Players who end up on LTIR also affect players’ incomes; money played to people like Pronger doesn’t count against the cap, but it does count against total money going to players, so that when players’ share of hockey-related revenue is calculated more money is withheld from escrow.

        Because of the visor instigation penalty there are also players who will feel obliged not to wear visors when they play because they’re expected to fight. Those people need to be protected too.

        Plus, basically: some people are fucking dumb. That’s why helmets and goalie gear and all that are mandated, just like hardhats on construction sites and seatbelts. To protect the fucking dumb from costing the rest of us.

            Anyone remember the 2011 playoffs when Steven Stamkos got hit by a slapshot in the visor, had a broken nose, and came back out in a full cage with cotton stuffed up his bleeding nose to finish the game? That was pretty fucking badass. Not wearing a visor? Maybe no opportunity to do anything badass on the ice ever again.

            Also Stevie Y’s career was basically finished by a puck in the eye in ’04, right?

            I don’t have a problem with people wearing cages who are recovering from facial injuries but otherwise I don’t like it for the reasons you mention.

      Losing Sharpie for an extended period of time is HUGE. Despite the high-profile ‘he’s not scoring goals’ nonsense, he is easily among the top 2-3 skaters each and every night. His loss for even five to 10 games is a huge hole to fill… and if this injury is likely to linger even when he returns, we have to fill the need.
