The Road Leads Where It’s Led

Well, it took two days longer than it was supposed to and now was released on what is always a great place to release big news, a Friday afternoon. But the NHL schedule is out. Let’s see what’s up.

The first thing you’ll notice is that John McDonough finally got his way and now all home games start at 7pm Central (except for Sundays obviously, and whenever NBC comes calling). This has been something the Hawks have wanted for a while, and though it’s a bitch for those who work far away from the UC or those who like a lot of pregame time (or those who sell programs outside every game), it will be nice for everyone to get home before 11pm after most home games. No biggie there. Bulls games have always started then, so the Hawks probably should too

The banner gets raised on October 1st, a Tuesday against the Washington Capitals. Cue all the shots of Alex Ovechkin looking on and everyone over analyzing his facial expression during it.

Other highlights:

-The Hawks once again pack the games into October, coming off a Cup win. They have 13 contests in that month, and eight of them are at home.

-The Hawks travel to Florida in October, which is a disappointment for those of us who wanted a break from the winter and were going to use games in Tampa and Sunrise as an excuse.

-Dave Bolland returns on October 19th. Expect some sort of small video tribute.

-The Circus Trip is now seven games instead of the usual six, and does not go to California. The Black Wednesday goofus-fest is in Calgary, and Black Friday sees the Hawks in Dallas before wrapping up the trip in Phoenix.

-The Hawks travel to Toronto and Montreal both on Saturday nights for CBC purposes.

-There is no Boxing Day game or New Year’s Eve game, but over the festive period the Hawks are visited by the Canucks, Devils, Avalanche, and Kings.

-The Bruins make their reappearance in Chicago on January 19th, which I’m guessing is going to be NBC’s first broadcast after the Winter Classic.

-The Hawks do not have a home game in February. They will do the California swing for the only time to start the month, go to Phoenix for the second time, and then wait around for the Olympics. They come back to New York to restart the season.

-The Hawks return to Chicago on March 1st, which we already knew, and it’s at Soldier Field. Though it’s scheduled as a night game, which is kind of an upset. Whatever, I’ll still be at the bar.

-March is obviously packed, with nine home games and 15 total, including a return to the scene of the crime in Boston and a stop at Consol Energy Center, where once again Toews and Crosby can not play each other due to injury for the second time in a month.

-The season wraps up with six games in 12 April dates, the last being the 12th in Nashville.

-For those curious, we’re coming up short on dates for a possible Committed Indian blog trip, but we’ll discuss it over the next little while and let you know what we come up with.

    Trip to Montreal!

    • Hi, I’m Bob LeDonne

Do it. The extra curriculars in Montreal are unbelievable.

      • 1benmenno

You mean the ringette tournements, naturellement.

  • Hags

    A Winnipeg-Vancouver-Edmonton-Calgary trip in mid-November sounds lovely.

    • putmeinthemadhouse

      its a regular holiday!

    • StealingHappyHour

      Winnipeg?

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

They don’t even have any parks!

        • 1benmenno

          I don’t know what you’re talking about.

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

Ilya Bryzgalov knows what I’m talking about

          • 1benmenno

Ah. Now I know what you’re talking about.

    • Waylon

I visited Winnipeg once – in mid – January, on a business trip. I used to think Minneapolis was unreal in the winter, then I experienced the Peg. Holy Mother.

  • corbant

Bummed they’re only making the trip to SoCal once, and not during the circus trip. It’s as if they’re trying to force me to visit my family in Chicago.

  • ExOnMS

Anyone know when single game tickets go on sale?

  • Fleshrifle

Blog trip to San Jose on Feb 1st. Catch some wine and crab at my digs in SF that afternoon. Sharks game Sat. night. Tahoe skiiing on Sunday…Fall down to LA for the Monday.

    • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Sounds wicked. I’ll join on Skype.

    • MattC86

Squeeze in a trip to Peay – I know Sonoma Coast is a ways, but still, I need to go – and I’m in (been meaning to go forever).

  • lizmcneill

Which division rivals do we play 5 times? I bet it’s Scum Jr and the Predzzzz because that’s no fun at all to watch.

    • AMR

The Blackhawks will play 29 Central Division games. They will play the Avs, Stars, Wild, Preds and Blues five times and the Jets four times.

      • VanDorp’sMullet

I sort of loathe our division. A bunch of teams I don’t give a shit about/don’t have dynamic players/play d-only systems where they try not to lose instead of playing to win. Scum Jr. is far more interested in trying to maim the opposition that win the Cup it seems, the Preds bore me to tears, the Wild are the definition of mediocre and the Stars and Avs inspire no thoughts in me other than “meh” (though the Avs do have some nice young talent). The only team I sort of want to watch are the Jets and that’s mostly to see how many buffet lines at Old Country Buffet Big Buff went to the night before… and to see Ladd again.

        • VerStig

          and FroFro!

        • Z-man19

I can easily see a nice little rivalry develop with the Avs even if they continue to suck. Seems like they give the Hawks fits and, IIRC, some of the games last year got a little chippy

          • 1benmenno

I asked my stylish lady friend from Denver what she thought of the Hawks and she said they were “Satan’s spawn.” A promising attitude for a nice little rivalry.

          • Z-man19

Is she a goer? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean?

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            What’s it like?

          • VanDorp’sMullet

At least in the short term, the Hawks may be the biggest losers of realignment because of the goony nature of a lot of the teams in their division and because of the snooze-fest nature to boot. It sucks that the Hawks lost the Maple Leafs a couple of realignments ago and now they’ve lost the Red Wings (both to different conferences even). Bettman should have gone all the way and put the Panthers, the Coyotes and the Hurricanes in our division just to really make it a shit-fest.

          • lizmcneill

I don’t know that it’s particularly goony outside Scum Jr and the Avs’ flying elbows. Pacific has the Nucks, Kings and Sharks who can all get nasty. Flortheast has the Habs/Leafs/Bruins bloodbath. The Metros seem the least so apart from Pitt-Pilly games but then it’s the division I’m least familiar with so dunno.

          • Waylon

Ah the old Norris division – but I remember the days when it was commonly referred to the “IgnorUs Division,” so maybe this is really a return of sorts to those days.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

worst description of sex ever. For one, never include Bettman. Even Mrs. Bettman thinks of David Stern during sex.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

Her breasts were like two bags of sand.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

My hand slid down her back into her valley of bowling balls which her perspiration had turned into alternating tracks of moss and rock slime.

          • lizmcneill

Repeated attempts to beat the crap out of the Hawks because they can’t beat them at hockey is a great way to start a hatred (see also: St Louis)

          • Joe Banks

… and Sharp and Hossa were injured/maimed by them.

          • Waylon

the only reason those games got chippy is because of their massive asshat who only goes onto the ice to injure a player. He jammed Sharp’s elbow into the boards last season, leading to his extended absence.

          • Z-man19

Landeskog elbowed someone in the melon as well, it wasn’t just O’Byrne(?)

          • lizmcneill

they traded O’Byrne to Toronto or the Habs at the deadline. However, Lapierre and Matt Cooke are now in the Central as well as the full set of Blues so we still have Too Much Goon in the division.

We got rid of Carbomb, no one else want to clean up their team??

          • Waylon

I was indeed referring to Landeskog.

        • Joe Banks

The Central appears to be a yawnfest. Let’s see what it develops into… probably goonfest.

  • Korab22

It’s too bad Disney on Ice wasn’t scheduled during the Olympic break. That would have been smart.

    • mad-hatter

No can do. Mickey and Co. will also be going to Russia as well to engage with the Sochi mascots in a battle royale cage match because hell if we let those commies invade our theme parks!
      https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/archive/9/92/20120808145510!Sochi_2014_mascot.jpg

      • Z-man19

mascot death matches, that would be entertaining

        • mad-hatter

I’m putting money on the lions.

          • Joe Banks

            Well, they do have Idonije…

        • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

I always thought curling would be more entertaining if no one knew when the stones were set to explode at an indeterminate time.

        • DesertHawk

          Play Saints Row 3

  • AMR

The #Blackhawks have agreed to terms with Drew LeBlanc, Theo Peckham and Michael Kostka. http://bit.ly/1bPjIEH

    • DesertHawk

2 minutes for unnecessary hashtag bleedover.

      • AMR

Sorry I copied it from the Hawks twitter account

      • bizarrohairhelmet

        2 for twittering?

        • bizarrohairhelmet

          should be a major

    • 2883

Peckham is interesting…. He’s just 25 and kinda replaces Carcillo’s physicality. (198 PIM in 2010-2011)

      • AMR

Yes and he is a D-man so gives the hawks a little depth there

        • putmeinthemadhouse

He’s a bit better than brookbank isn’t he?

          • Z-man19

not setting the bar very high are you?

          • cliffkoroll

            #cantbeworsethanboynton

      • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Only four games in the show last year, and that was skating for Edmonton. If he couldn’t crack their blue line, how will he crack ours?

        • AMR

He has concussion issues. I think he is just a depth D that will stay in the AHL unless injuries take its toll

    • VerStig

      Peckham!

  • FakeASeizure

If anyone plans on making the trip to St. Louis at some point, make your plans known. I’m right in between and I feel more comfortable traveling in a pack when I go there.

  • bizarrohairhelmet

going to all 3 Dallas games fo sho

    • cliffkoroll

Did you go last year? My son the frat douche / hockey player, en route to South Padre, dropped in for the dick-whipping. Even got seats at the right end to see Kaner’s Goal of The Year. Tickets were like $25.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

hmmm…i was in the 1st level in the corner where Kaner spun-o-rama’d. It was just absolutely awesome to see it live. tv just takes the physical space out of the game.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

There was rampant hi-5ing with all the fellow ‘Hawks fans, but don’t remember any of them being frat douchey looking.

  • Preacher

Received my Stanley Cup Edition of the Committed Indian yesterday. Awesome issue! The usual great writing and excellent hockey analysis. The best thing about it was that it made me appreciate even more just what the Hawks accomplished this year. We are living in an incredible time to be Hawks’ fans. I, for one, plan to enjoy it to the fullest. The CI is a big part of that enjoyment. Thanks to the TOS and the rest for making the celebration even sweeter.

  • VerStig

For those stupidly looking around for the schedule like I was:
    http://www.nhl.com/ice/schedulebyweek.htm?team=CHI

  • Z-man19

Philly signs Courturier to 2 yrs, 1.75 per. Holmgren finally inks a pretty good deal me thinks

  • Accipiter

Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gagner has asked for $5.5 million next season in arbitration. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=428062

    • Z-man19

      Wonder what he really wants

  • Joe Banks

    Justin Bieber sucks!

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

What’s your opinion on the coldness of ice or bears defecating in the woods?

      • Z-man19

If a bear shits in the woods but there’s no one there to smell it, does it still stink?

        • bizarrohairhelmet

What if that Bear is Ditka?

        • Joe Banks

          Do you have ice?

      • Joe Banks

I don’t like his brother, Miley, either.

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Today is our anniversary. Among other things, Mrs Sparky got me an Ice Hogs polo shirts.

    • Z-man19

Congrats to you and Mrs STB

      • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

She has learned that we don’t root for the Chicago Wolves.

  • Joe Banks

Oh, and by the way… Justin Bieber Sucks!

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Am I the only one worried that the lack of any challenge in the new Central (apart from the possible exception of river scum) may hurt us come next year’s playoffs.

    • lizmcneill

well, the playoffs are also divisional too. I’m actually more worried that there’s now an even chance we have to get past river scum to get to the conference final, and they are bound to maim or concuss someone important in the course of a playoff series.

      • VanDorp’sMullet

Fully agreed. The strategy seems to be that if you can’t beat ‘em, beat ‘em.

        • lizmcneill

Fuck that talentless, cut-price goon show, may they never win a Cup.

          • Waylon

Don’t worry, the usual shelf life of any Hitchcock – coached team is usually four seasons (or less). Their time is about up.

          • lizmcneill

May they miss the playoffs for the next decade! (If they are river scum and canonical scum are lake scum, does that make Vancouver sea scum?)

          • Joe Banks

Nah, they’re whale shit. There’s nothing lower than whale shit.

          • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Except the sand on which whale shits rests at the bottom of the ocean, which brings us back to St Louis.

            Circle of scum….

    • zacked

I am slightly worried about the Cubsification of the Cubs, yes.

  • MattC86

Friday, April 11 – DC Crew, Assemble!

    http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/iXlskUxlI7E/hqdefault.jpg?feature=og

Seriously though, I’m in. Others? Spoon is too big?

    • Bannerman

I will try to make that work

    • MattC86

Also, just throwing it out there – DC is a fun town to watch games in, flights to DCA from Chicago are pretty cheap, and this will be at the end of the season when we’re all frothing for playoff time, rather than in the mid-season doldrums. Only downside is tix will be far more expensive than a half-empty building in STL or NSH in January.

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

Oh yeah, I’ve already got that date circled on my calendar

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Watching a replay of Flyers/Sabres from 2006 featuring then future hawks Handzus and Campbell. I had forgotten how much OLN sucked at hockey. (but still better than ESPN)

  • shinkicker

I’m hoping Southwest has it’s usual massive sale for the january-mid february season and I can swing the San Jose game on Feb 1st.
