Sprint Time And Other Notes

A couple things to cover today, so let’s get to it.

-The Hawks took back second place last night, as the Avs decided to give Semyon Varlamov a week off and threw J.S. Giguere and Reto Berra out there with a straight face. Which completely exposed just how bad their blue line is as both the Habs and Jets lit them up.

As we know, the Hawks won’t get the tie-breaker due to significantly less regulation wins than the Avs. But the schedule ahead for Colorado is not exactly a popsicle (first of all, it’s Fudge-cical).

It kicks off on Friday when the Avs host the Bruins, who after dropping the first two after Sochi haven’t lost since. That’s 10 in a row, and in only two of those was it even a one-goal game. Needless to say, that’s quite the challenge for the Avalanche and I fully expect the B’s to outshoot them 80-12. They get a soft trip to Nashville and then host Vancouver, who claim they’re chasing a playoff spot but I think we all know better. From there it’s not pretty. They’ll host the Sharks, play both the Jackets and Rangers who are scrapping with each other for playoff spots, go to St. Louis, then host the Penguins. They go up to Edmonton and Vancouver, both of whom should be done at that point. But the season ends for Colorado with a trip to San Jose and then one to Anaheim. Seeing as how those two teams are going to be fighting tooth and nail to win the division and not have to deal with L.A. in the first round, that’s probably not where you want to be. Obviously, finishing the season with the Caps and Preds as the Hawks do is an advantage.

The Hawks will play one more game Sunday before the Avs retake the ice on Tuesday at the same time as the Hawks host the Stars, so you can easily see a scenario where the Hawks could be five points up before Tuesday’s games. Even without Kane, you’d expect the Hawks to find a way past Carolina and Nashville, though the Preds always have other ideas.

-I used to be disgusted, and now I try to be amused. That’s about how I feel regarding the Teuvo Teravainen furor or lack of it. At first, I thought the excitement was misplaced because there are so many challenges for him. But the outright mockery from the beaters even though the coach and GM and organizational stooge Eddie Olczyk are talking the kid up has swung it for me. I’m guardedly excited for his arrival, which comes today. I still can’t quite figure how they’re going to fit him in, but he wouldn’t be flying over here if he wasn’t going to start practicing soon, and he wouldn’t be practicing without being fit in. So I’m guessing Stan has this figured out. I don’t know, it feels like that swing through Boston-Ottawa-Pittsburgh is when he could be unveiled. If not then certainly the first game of April at home against Minnesota is the latest we’ll see him. Let’s see what the kid can do. If nothing else it falls in the “Can’t hurt could help” category.

-I’m always suspicious of the Hawks’ assessment of injuries. But having watched sports for a long time and seeing things repeatedly, I think three-four weeks is about right for what looks like a sprained MCL. I’m not a doctor, I just know that kind of thing is what tends to result in sprained MCLs. These things tend to linger though. You can play in three weeks, but I think it’s likely it won’t be full-strength until next season.

I assume the lineup will stay about the same, with Q attempting to cancel out Versteeg’s drunken waywardness by keeping Toews and Hossa on watch. If Saad returns I would expect him to man the other side of Smith and Bickell. I like the idea of Saad and Smith together, because they played together in Rockford and took games over when they wanted. It’s at least hellacious below the goal line. Shaw-Handzus-Sharp is kind of a mess. Sharp probably flips with Bickell at times. But it’ll keep Regin in the lineup, which is at least better than Brookbank at forward.

  • MySpoonIsTooBig

The simplest solution for fitting TT into the lineup and under the cap was gift-wrapped to the ‘Hawks last night by way of Brenden Morrow not knowing how to skate – put Kane on LTIR and viola, an extra ~$6M in cap space thanks to the LTIR exception. If Kane really is going to miss a minimum of 3 weeks there is absolutely no reason not to do it. It would remove any pressure he might feel to return early as players on LTIR must miss a minimum of 10 games and 24 days, he’d be eligible to return for game 1 of the playoffs if he’s healthy (‘Hawks have 12 games left in the regular season so that takes care of the 10 games aspect, and 24 days from yesterday is 4/12 the date of the ‘Hawks final regular season game in Nashville), and that clears plenty of room to not only add TT to the roster but to also recall someone like Morin should the ‘Hawks want to give him a look and/or have a little more insurance in terms of extra skaters.

    • SamFels

That’s obviously the easiest way, but I doubt the Hawks are inclined to strip Kane of the possibility of coming back early, which he’s done when he’s been hurt before.

      • ballyb11

Seems they usually give what ends up being a ‘worst case scenario’. Seems that way to me.

      • Z-man19

That may be true and maybe they wait a few days to decide but Spoon is right, it makes room for TT and someone else on the roster. Anyone else gets dinged and has to miss a game or two, they’ll have Rundbland at F. Give Kane 5-6 days to see where’s he’s at, if it’s not looking good, LTIR Kane. If TT debuts sometime after the Stars game, he could only play 9 regular season games, so if he doesn’t play any playoff games, they don’t burn a year off ELC

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

That’s certainly a valid point, though one thing that the ‘Hawks brass might be inclined to think about is that placing him on LTIR would eliminate any pressure he might feel to try to rush back sooner than he should. If it were up to Kane he’d probably be back on the ice tomorrow, putting him on LTIR takes that decision entirely out of his hands and forces him to take the time to heal up before the playoffs. Whether or not he likes it, it would probably be the best thing for him.

    • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

I thought it was either 10G or 24 days. It did not have to be both, like over Olympic Break or other very light schedule where a player would still be out for a nice chunk of time but a replacement would still be needed for the term.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

My understanding from reading the relevant section of the CBA is that it is indeed both

  • amontesawesome

“the Hawks won’t get the tie-breaker due to significantly less regulation wins than the Avs.” – Actually, Avs have the tie breaker because of regulation+OT wins. This may seem small and nitpicky, but it’s not because it underscores the role chance plays in Bettman’s NHL.

The Hawks have more regulation wins (35) than the Avs (33).

    • birdhead

Thanks for posting that so I didn’t have to go and look it up. Fricking OT record.

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

More importantly, it should read “…significantly fewer regulation wins…”

Saad isn’t fast enough to skate with Toews and Hossa.

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Don’t care how the next ten go on the W/L record, as long as we are getting into playoff mode. Yeah, we gotta stay healthy, but you want to go into the playoffs playing well, even if the points aren’t getting racked up as high as you’d like.

    • roadhog

I’m with Sparky. From here on out it’s all about shoring up our 60 minute game. Puck support, getting the puck deep, winning races to the puck, making good decisions. I’d add for Shaw, playing with a bit more discipline. Secondary scoring will likely be key, so I’d like to see Q ease up on the blender a bit and allow Regin/Bicks/Steeg/Smith to get some more time with familiar faces.

  • Korab22

So does Kane have a knee or an ankle? /Wannstetded

During the radio broadcast last night, maybe midway through the 3rd, Troy announced he had a high ankle sprain and would be out two weeks before Wieideman quickly jumped in (while probably giving Troy a WTF are you doing look) and said LBI and then quickly changed the subject.

Either way he’s going to be out a bit, but is the knee thing official?

        • ballyb11

For those of you who haven’t read my previous 414 posts re this, I got a puck on the 1st balcony of the old Stadium. It was a deflected save of a Jerry Korab snapshot. Canadiens’ goalie was Rogatien Vachon.

    • Z-man19

If you watch the replay, when Kane goes down on the ice, his left hand moves toward his knee, not his ankle. Not that this is definitive of anything, but anyone I’ve ever seen sprain their ankle, reaches for it immediately.

      • Korab22

So Kane reached for his knee to fool everyone. Or was it Troy, citing sources, saying ankle to get people off the scent, when in fact it really is the knee, What intrigue! NHL injury subterfuge has to be one of the dumbest things in sports.

        • CozBullsFan

I’ve had a high ankle sprain before. Recovery was about two to three weeks in an air cast. That was with me playing basketball. If it was an MCL sprain, it would be at least a month to 6 weeks. Depends on the severity of the sprain.

          • Z-man19

            You’re no Kaner

          • CozBullsFan

Says you! Ok, I agree. I should have added that professional athletes tend to recover more quickly. So it may be a higher degree of an ankle or knee sprain. It’s a guessing game really.

          • Z-man19

Not to mention unlimited medical resources to speed recovery. Yes, we don’t know and probably won’t for a while

        • Waylon

I’d normally agree, but when you have massive douche patrols like what we saw last night with teams like the Bloos, you know that they’ll just immediately target whatever part that’s been injured. We’ve seen this happen time after time with the Hawks – remember when the Nucks tried to re – concuss Bolland in his first game back on the ice after he’d been out of action for months? You think a scumbag like Torres doesn’t do this crap on a regular basis? It’s a reality of life in the NHL for certain teams and certain players – better to let them wonder where the injury is then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Last year when Saad was brought up, I said he’s barely 20 years old, sure, he’s got some talent, but he spent most of the last couple years in Saginaw of all places, less than half a season at the Rock. So I figured I wasn’t going to expect anything, and if he contributed a bit here and there, well, that’d be a nice little bonus.

          • lizmcneill

Isn’t Bolly six nothing, generously? Kaner is way more than an inch shorter.

          • 10thMountainFire

I think he is. Kaner is my size. There’s no way he’s taller than 5’10″.

          • lizmcneill

He’s had such a rough go of it lately :(

          • birdhead

            *quietly weeping*

          • VerStig

Also sad that we can’t have as big a number of 30-goal scorers this year…

          • birdhead

pfft I don’t care about the team I only care about Kaner

            (kidding obviously, that sucks too)

        • jordyhawk

In hindsight, it was pretty obvious his skating was not where it needed to be and at that age it’s probably not something that’s going to get a whole lot better. Danault struggling (at least offensively) too.

          • lizmcneill

            Danault’s 20 though.

          • jordyhawk

Yes, Danault will definitely get time to develop and Stan’s wanting to groom him to be the new Kruger may just be the right thing. That said, I have doubts about Dent as head groomer.

  • nextgame

‘But it’ll keep Regin in the lineup, which is at least better than Brookbank at forward.’

I wouldn’t bet the baby’s college fund on this, Sam.

    • jordyhawk

I think Regin has done a good job. Battles hard, responsible on defense, over 50% in the dot (although apparently now he is a wing)…what more can you ask for a guy from the markdown bin. This guy is a lot scrappier than we were lead to believe, and spring time is scrappy time.

      • CozBullsFan

I agree with you. Regin was an after thought before coming to the Hawks. He’s done quite well in his limited time here. I think he’ll be an integral part of the line-up come playoffs.

      • Waylon

also agreed – he’s made an impact given the limited minutes. Could be a major pest in the playoffs ala Shaw.

      • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Not a player with a ton of talent, but he seems to be in the right place at the right time on offense and defense. In other words, a solid bottom six guy.

  • Z-man19

Holy crap, Tracey Myers actually addressed the cap issues the Hawks have in bringing TT or anyone on to the roster, finally

    • Accipiter

      And ?

      • Z-man19

Someone has to be put on waivers or LTIR

  • William Diedrich

Does the college center being signed imply Dragon is rock bound?

    • CozBullsFan

Nope. It gives the Hawks flexibility with the Black Aces. There isn’t an available player that the Hawks could sign that would result in TT going to the Rock.

      • William Diedrich

        Splendid.

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

It will take DB a week to practice and fit in. The Freshman will get his shot and then head to the Rock.

  • 10thMountainFire

We’re also eagerly awaiting the arrival of this guy.

  • CozBullsFan

Hearing a Vuvuzela at a hockey game makes me want to go all Dexter. Someone at the Wild game needs to stop that right now.

    • Joe Banks

That’s worse than fruiting the beer.

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Scum leading Pitt 2-0 late in the second…. and give up three goals in 2:31 to trail 3-2 at the end of two.

  • CozBullsFan

Wild tie the game up 3-3 against the Devils.

  • CozBullsFan

    DEVILS WIN IN OT!

  • CozBullsFan

Heh. Penguins doing their best to help Scum win.

    • Arctic Ice

4-4. This game is all kinds of crazy.

      • CozBullsFan

        Indeed.

        • Arctic Ice

          Carnival ending.

          • CozBullsFan

            ALL OF MY WAT

  • CozBullsFan

    LOL SCUM

  • CozBullsFan

    SWEET MOTHER OF GOD SCUM

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Legwand takes a rock stupid major penalty. Scum has to kill off a five minute major at the end of reg and into OT. Pitt was so in love with the back door play…. Scum killed the major, and won it with four tenths left as a rebound hit Scuderi and bounced into the Pitt net. You couldn’t make this shit up.

      • CozBullsFan

I don’t even think they were looking for the back door play. That hot potato passing between Malkin and Crosby was hilarious. They looked like the Hawks on the PP. All pass and no shoot.

      • Arctic Ice

I should become a fortune teller. I could feel it coming with that 3 on 1 rush to win it.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

That was a dirty, dirty play by Legwand. He butt-ended Malkin square in the nuts. It’s one of the absolute dirtiest moves he could have pulled. You can’t try to claim that it was an accident or a hockey play gone wrong, what’s he going to say “sorry I accidentally jammed the butt end of my stick directly into your groin with perfect timing and accuracy?”

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Scuderi puts two in the net tonight. Unfortunately it was his own net.

    • CozBullsFan

      LOL

    • Arctic Ice

      Fortunate for scum.

      • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Scuderi deserves first star for Det.

        • CozBullsFan

          Seabrook lite.

  • bizarrohairhelmet

I hope some people are watching FLA/PHO. I’ve been watching Pirri’s shifts and there is no question why he is gone.

    • CozBullsFan

Just tuned in. What did I miss?

      • bizarrohairhelmet

Best way to describe it is he’s the opposite of a puck magnet.

        • CozBullsFan

Surprising. He was everywhere the last couple of games I caught. The puck always found him. Maybe an off night?

        • Arctic Ice

          puck repellent

        • 10thMountainFire

A magnet has two ends. He’s just the wrong end.

          • VerStig

            Brandon Pirri: magnetic puck monopole

      • bizarrohairhelmet

I have to agree with Luongo on that one. Anyone can score if you’re allowed to just move the goalie out of the way. Meh, whatever. I hate the Coyotes and was hoping Dallas would take their spot, but DAL lost tonight and PHO looks strong in this one.

        • CozBullsFan

Yeah, that was a bad no call. Lu had good reason to be mad.

  • CozBullsFan

Lu got run on that goal. That’s a bad call.

    • 1benmenno

Goalie Interference: the penalty most inconsistently called?

      • CozBullsFan

        Yes

      • Waylon

        yes, unless you’re Mike Smith.

        • Joe Banks

He’s been talking to the league…

  • Z-man19
    • CozBullsFan

No surprise there. Wonder what move/moves will be made to make room for him.

      • 10thMountainFire

They’ll introduce him to Kane and say ‘be that’.

        • CozBullsFan

Pfft. No one can replicate Black Magic.

          • VerStig

He doesn’t need black magic. He has dragonfire.

          • Bob Lanz

Oh gaad I just got verclemnt! “He doesn’t need black magic he has dragon fire”……….. YES!

    • 10thMountainFire

      First.

      • CozBullsFan

        BOOOOO!

        • VerStig

So is upboating Coz essentially downboating XMF here?

I think you just discovered the downboat workaround…

          • CozBullsFan

Funny thing about that…XMF was most likely the one that upboated me. It’s a given that we upboat each other no matter we say.

          • 10thMountainFire

            I just downboated myself?

          • bizarrohairhelmet

gross. that’s your business, not ours.

    • VerStig

      Heh.

      Jay Zawaski @JayZawaski670 3m
@TSNBobMcKenzie What does that mean as far as him playing? Do we know yet?

      • 10thMountainFire

That’s great reporting right there. It’s right up there with commenting on Yahoo threads.

  • Z-man19
    • 10thMountainFire

Had a Pierre stuck inside his skate.

      • Arctic Ice

        Wish

  • Bob Lanz

He’s here! Yes it’s ok to be excited we should be. Why? Cause he is an exciting player. How good will he be? Only way to find out is by playing him. This isn’t like MLB the kid knows how to skate shoot pass and did I mention skate. Can’t wait to see him with our starters against nhl competition!

    • ballyb11

So small – weight (strength?) wise. They’ll target him. Hope he, too, isn’t on the LTIR quickly.

      • zacked

He’s been playing with adults since he was 17, I’m gonna guess he knows how to avoid getting crushed.

        Plus, teens are springy.

  • Joe Banks

    Fred Phelps dies… Satan, he’s all yours…

    • bizarrohairhelmet

Satan and its minions are protesting the funeral.

      • 10thMountainFire

That’s impressive because I see the Blues are scheduled to play at noon central time tomorrow.

        • bizarrohairhelmet

          What about the Sharks?

          • 10thMountainFire

            They redeemed with Make-a-Wish.

  • MySpoonIsTooBig

The #Blackhawks have recalled Jeremy Morin and Teuvo Teravainen; Patrick Kane has been put on long-term injury. http://t.co/Ovo7UDfMb6— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) March 21, 2014

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

Kaner on LTIR means that he is officially done for the regular season as it requires him to miss at least 24 days of action, the final regular season game against Nashville on 4/12 is exactly 24 days from this past Wednesday when he got hurt.

It was really the only option – they had no other way to recall either Morin or TT (let alone both) without either putting him on LTIR or waiving and demoting someone, and they can’t afford to lose anyone else from the active roster right now. If I had to make a prediction right now, I’d guess that Morin probably draws in tonight against Carolina and we get our first look at TT either Sunday against Nashville or Tuesday against Dallas.

      • 334Rules

Let’s hope they’re smart enough to give TT a couple of games in the Rock to keep him under 10 with the big club and burning off a year.

        • zacked

Playoffs count for burning the ELC, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

    • 10thMountainFire

      Welp.

Let’s see what these two can do.

      /Ben Smith’d

  • berkley

heh. Took an injury to let Morin get brought up. Hopefully he makes an impression this time.
