Ren Said It With Authority: Kings 2 – Hawks 4 (Hawks lead 2-0)

In all the visions I’ve had of this series in my own mind, not one of them contained Jonathan Quick getting pulled from a game. Hasn’t happened in the playoffs since 2010 (that’s nice symmetry), and though I don’t think it marks some sort of landmark or sea change more than just a quirky note, it does feel good. But then again, this is why The Fifth Feather is simply a manly man among just men, because he said the floodgates would open at some point if the Hawks maintained this kind of pressure. He knows so much, and is so handsome. He really doesn’t belong on this planet.

It’s a funny old game though, because it was the reverse of Game 1′s 1st period in that it ended with a false scoreline. While the Hawks were up 2-0, they really didn’t deserve to be based on balance of play. Just like the Kings had no business being up 1-0 after 20 in Game 1. But thanks to a couple handy saves from Crow, some wayward finishing from the Kings, and utter ruthlessness from the Hawks, they were already halfway home. To me, a two goal lead is nearing the horizon for this Kings team (especially without Richards), and a three-goal one requires a team from NASA. They just don’t generate that much.

Once again, the Hawks speed didn’t have an answer from L.A., and now they face all the questions going into Game 3.

Bullets after the jump.

-The first period had me very queasy, and that was even after Shaw’s opener. The Hawks precision on breakouts wasn’t where it was on Saturday, and thus there were more keep-ins and aimless flings for safety. But that’s not all on the Hawks, as the Kings were more determined to get the puck and crash for it below the goal line. However, that involved bringing their third forward lower toward the Hawks supporting forward, and their defensemen pinching in. That would leave more space behind, and when the Hawks can even get 2-on-2 heading the other way, the Kings have problems because one of their two is almost assuredly a plodder. May I present goals 2 and 4 for the Hawks as evidence.

-A couple lineup changes from the Kings tonight, one forced and one not. Richards was out, and Sutter scratched the huffing and puffing Jake Muzzin for Alec Martinez. Martinez is in the same mold, as he’s a pretty nifty offensive defenseman. But get him on the other end, and well, duck for cover. He played the Hawks 4th goal like a short-bus, exposing Matt Greene in space which is exactly where Greene doesn’t want to be. He got caught for Sharp’s mini-breakaway was well. Kane must’ve been giggling when he saw him on the other side.

-While the Hawks weren’t as sound on breakouts early tonight, that doesn’t mean they were awful. As the Feather said on Twitter (love that man), the second (and maybe killer) goal sprang from Toews being right near Bickell so that Bicks from along the boards could pop it right out to a supporting forward. Again, when the Hawks execute this they have at worst even numbers heading up the ice, which for them is an advantage.

-Man, that Jeff Carter can really snipe at the UC…when he’s down four. That makes him 0-5 in playoff games here, by the way. I think my highlight was in the 3rd when he totally got muscled off a puck by Nick Leddy.

-With Richards out, and even though he wasn’t really having that offensively dynamic a playoff (whatever his leading scorer status says), the Kings are short on creativity, and crucially so. Combine that with Kopitar looking every bit as hurt as The Royal Half said he’s been in tonight’s Q&A, and really the only answer the Kings have is their shovel-it-here-shovel-it-there-FIRE! mode of attack. As the Hawks are limiting that with their defensive responsibility, and you start to wonder if the Kings are going to score enough to take four of five.

-Brandon Saad was the best player on the ice for the first 40, and was finally rewarded with two apples. He once again horsed Doughty, and created the first goal by beating two Kings in a board battle. Jesus fuck, when this kid is 23 and filled out and knows the NHL game? I joked with my older brother that he’s wanted a Rick Tocchet on the Hawks since 1986. Might it finally be here?

-The only Hawk forwards to not register a shot tonight were Stalberg (who had an assist) and Bolland….who did a whole lot of not much.

-All the CORSI numbers look off because of a 3rd period where it looked like the Hawks were saving what they could for what’s ahead. I guess with a three-in-four stretch, you can’t blame them too much.

-Dustin Penner….I just can’t stop laughing.

-Patrick Kane is the last of the four horsemen who needs to make himself known on the scoresheet, though he did have an assist tonight. But an explosion is coming, because he’s getting looks after clean Hawks breakouts and one of these games there’s a three or four-point destruction coming. Because he hasn’t shirked from this challenge like he did at times against the Wings, and that’s with the Kings sending everything at him.

It feels good now, but there’s such a long way to go. There’s a fury coming on Tuesday for the Hawks, and the Kings have been here before. The desperation they must feel now will only add to the angry-Poseidon act that they will throw from the off on Tuesday. But the Hawks are not the Blues. If the Hawks can weather it for the first 10 or 20, and the Kings get a little over-exuberant, that space behind their charging horde is still going to be there. And Regehr, Greene, Scuderi, and Martinez are still in no way equipped to deal with it.

6.

          • 1benmenno

            What’s S& H?

          • DesertHawk

Shipping and Handling. It more than doubled the cost. Not that that’s unreasonable, for food from Montreal to backwoods Arizona. But as I don’t currently earn the money, I can’t be as indiscriminate with the spending as I’d like.

          • CozBullsFan

Have you thought about having them shipped to someone here at TCI that lives closer to Montreal and having them reship them to you? Might be a whole lot cheaper.

          • DesertHawk

That might be a thing. I’ll figure it out. Another thing that makes me a bit hesitant, is that the least I could order is 4 dozen… that’s a lot of bagels for 1 dude and a 4 year old.

        • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

You put ‘Canucks’ and ‘winning the cup’ in the same sentence. That’s like dividing by zero.

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

And yet they have made it to 15 playoff games. Going forward they can score as many as they want, as long as it’s one less than us per game.

  • Preacher

Saad has been a freaking BEAST in these 2 games! He must have lifted weights between the series because he’s simply outmuscling guys now.

    • birdhead

that one moment where he just undressed Doughty … woof.

  • Paul the Fossil

Now that was some fun watching from the 2nd row of section 321. Felt like the Hawks got any wandering focus scared out of them by the Wings and they are simply again the best hockey team on the planet the way they were in the first half of the regular season. The depth and balance is just amazing.

Meanwhile I swear that Crow waggled his catching glove at Bernier after that 3rd period altercation, when Bernier skated out to the King blueline as the refs were separating everybody and Crawford was staring out at him. Looked to me like the goalie version of “wanna go?” Seems to be no mention of it in the postgame chatter but that’s sure what it looked like.

    • DesertHawk

Crow’s got a bit of a deep seated crazy streak. I wonder if Emery has rubbed off on him?

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

I think that sort of hazing is frowned upon these days, plus Crawford’s not even a rookie

    • Z-man19

They didn’t show Crow’s reaction on NBC, just Bernier at center ice.

      • Accipiter

        He reacted.

    • lizmcneill

Crow was just warning Bernier off messing with his captain.

  • Waylon

I think the funniest scene was where Brown tried to take Zeus’s head off at mid – ice and had his helmet snapped off after Zeus got his hands up at the last minute. Let’s hope the Hawks continue their exposure of the Kings as being pretty much Quick and then hit anything that moves. And btw, Bernier? Yeah, get back from mid – ice.

    • Paul the Fossil

Five straight games on the scoresheet for Handzus by the way. And he was better than even at the dot, and had a couple of takeaways and a great PK shot-block. He seems to be getting the hang of the role that Q wants from him.

      • Z-man19

        That shot block was stellar

        • 1benmenno

Saying good things about Hand Job is illegal on this site.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Go home, 1benmenno’s posts. Your drunk. On prison wine. And prison love. I guess it’s true what they say: you can’t go home again if you’re in prison.

          • 1benmenno

In Dallas, maybe. In Austin, not so much.

          • Bob Lanz

Yes but it happens to be true so good for bowman on this trade, I hated it at the time. Me wrong

  • 1benmenno

Will Gretzky show up for the next game? By Gretzky, I don’t mean Walter. I mean his scantily clad granddaughter.

    • birdhead

oh my god, will there be scantily dressed attractive women there?! AND WILL THEY BE TANGENTIALLY RELATED TO HOCKEY SO THE CAMERA CAN LINGER ON THEM AND THE BROS AT HOME CAN POP A BONER and be reminded that all filming, heck, all *people* exist basically for their edification? LET’S HOPE SO.

      • 1benmenno

Sorry, I stopped reading after linger. Mmmmmmmm. Linger

        • bizarrohairhelmet

I stopped after Boner. I assumed it was a very sly reference to Josh Andrew Koenig since Koenig is the German word for king. At first I was thinking someone was embarrassingly bitter, but then I thought they were just extremely witty.

          • 1benmenno

            I stopped reading after after.

          • 2883

I stopped reading after god, cause I figured everything else was just a nicely worded story about how one should live their life, and I don’t listen to people that tell me what to do

          • birdhead

            Bitter.

        • cliffkoroll

For a second, I was like ‘Wha? lingerie? Oh. Just linger. Don’t think I will.’

  • Leightons5hole

any possibility we can get uncle dale to take bolland off our hands to pay bicks

    • Bob Lanz

Bowman has to find a way to get dale to “steal” Bolland from us and maybe others for a draft pick

  • 1benmenno

This is for DH, but also for the rest of you who are depressed by our recent success:

    • bizarrohairhelmet

      Very aerodynamic.

      • 1benmenno

Don’t know what you mean. But then I never know what you mean, Texas. (Oh yeah, I went there.)

        • bizarrohairhelmet

Part of being from Texas is that we just don’t care. The other part is we still don’t care. We’re kind of dicks.

          • 1benmenno

Does the rest of Texan care about Austin, or does Austin not care about the rest of Texas?

          • DesertHawk

            Yes.

          • 1benmenno

Oh, you just made me want to go to Arizona.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Austin is the Love This Giant of Texas. Critics laud how quirky and experimental it is, yet the whole world knows about it so it’s not really underground and it’s mostly brass instruments so it’s barely listenable.

          • 1benmenno

Somewhere in this post is another EMO band name.

          • 1benmenno

Barely Listenable. Critics Laud. Mostly Brass.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            Giant of Texas

          • 1benmenno

I like it. Bring your bongos.

  • DesertHawk

Thing I liked best about Crow in the post game. When asked about Quick. “I want to beat him”

    • Accipiter

      At hockey ?

  • 1benmenno

Hawks be nimble. Hawks beat Quick.
Quick get sent to the bleachers, bitch.

    • DesertHawk

      Well said.

  • BigCSouthside

Prior to this series, everyone talked about the great forecheck of LA and how Quick is invincible. All I could think of was this quote:

Tom Hagen (EVERYONE in the media): It would be like trying to kill the President; there’s no way we can get to him

Michael Corleone (The Hawks): Tom, you know you surprise me. If anything in this life is certain-if history has taught us anything….it’s that you can kill anybody.

    • ballyb11

Withhold judgement until after games 3 & 4.

  • chidiver

My take on this the “why can’t the Kings stop/slow the Hawks like Scum did?” Is a direct result of their style of play. Detroit played the Hawks aggressively through the entire neutral zone. They could do this because they weren’t sending everyone in on the forecheck, like the Kings are doing. The Hawks have solved the breakout against the Kings and the Kings haven’t adjusted (which would stifle their much-vaunted forecheck). This gives the Hawks forwards the time and space they need to make magic happen because the Kings dmen are in full retreat. Until the Kings adjust to cut off the breakout plays (by somewhat neutering the forecheck), the Hawks will continue to easily enter the offensive zone and make the dman look silly. Without Quick standing on his head…the scoreboard will reflect this dominance.

    • Why

Bang on. Add to that that Detroit is probably a faster team on the front end than L.A. and the neutral zone becomes a track meet.

  • CommonSense1957

Dustin Penner is laughable. Even more laughable is that he’s probably been the Kings’ best forward this series so far.

  • lizmcneill

Kane will break through if he keeps getting the chances he has been, he was real close 2 or 3 times last night. He’s definitely more noticeable than he was during the Wings series, the Kings don’t seem to have a match for his speed and skill.

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

I’ve no problem with DDN being quiet as long as they are keeping the other guys top scorer’s quiet. I’ll be more than happy to let our hopes ride with our third and fourth lines against anyone else’s third and fourth lines.

      • lizmcneill

Kaner is probably not doing a lot of shutting down, that’s not really why we keep him around. He is a useful distraction to let Sharpy and Zeus at the net though.

  • Jim

    Bolland Bashing

Dave Bolland is diminished for sure. However, he is a winner. Bolland made 2 key plays in the Blackhawks run here.

    1) Crunching Nyquest in game 7 overtime against Detroit, seperating him from the puck, which of course Seabrook deposited into the back of the net

    2) Crunching Richards and taking the heart and soul out of LA Kings.

Reminds me of the AJ Pierzynski dropped third strike against the Angels, where he ran to first, then Joe Crede followed with a triple high off the left field wall. This at a time when it looked like the Sox may lose.

(I’m a Cubs and Sox fan by the way)

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Personally I totally agree that Bolland is a valuable player, and until recently I considered him part of our core. Given his somewhat inconsistent play, I now have to wonder if his 3.4 MM cap hit isn’t a liability with guys like Bickel, Leddy, and Stallberg all becoming FA’s this July, and all playing at least as well if not better than Rat.

That’s what it comes down to in this league, it’s not you, it’s your cap hit. Personally, I’d LOVE to have Campbell on this team, but not at the cost of the 7MM in players we’d have to give up (no fault of Soup’s, the onus like with Talon).

      • Why

We’ve become the pretty girl that doesn’t realize how much stuff costs. We’ve been spoiled by how well certain players have developed. With the amount of money spent on the defence, plus Toews, Kane, Hossa and Sharp, we shouldn’t have this much depth at forward. Bolland would be worth 3.3 million to most teams. We get to complain about his contract for one simple reason:

Total Cap hit of Shaw, Bickell, Kruger, Stalberg and Saad is around 3.75 million. With the exception of maybe Kruger (who has been earning his stripes on the PK), that’s four or five top 9 forwards for a pretty ridiculous price.

You don’t get to keep depth like that in the new NHL.

        • lizmcneill

Kruger is 3C on most other teams (and has been seeing more 3rd line QoC
than Shaw even though his minutes are low because 2/3 of his line are
the PK forwards). We are spoiled with depth, as you say.

    • ballyb11

      Great analogy.

      Go you White Sox!

  • cliffkoroll

This team will never win a Cup with Niemi in net!

Wait. Strike that. What I mean to say is that the time will come when this team needs Dave Fucking Bolland, and at that time, he will appear.

Also, Rosival is having a fine series, no?

    • Bob Lanz

Yes on rosy not so much with bolland, I’m of the opinion that Ben smith would bring more to the ice right now? Feel free to abuse me for this comment

      • cliffkoroll

I will do no such thing.

Pining for Ben Smith is a form of self-abuse.

    • Accipiter

*Roszival is having a fine series. I agree. There were a few instances where I thought he was going to be slow getting back to retrieve a puck, but he found a step somewhere, either that or the LA forwards are slower than I thought.

  • Research Analysis

bodog.ca has the Hawks at even money this a.m. Before the season started they were 14-1 :)

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

According to an ESPN article to which I have lost the link, StanBo and Bicks were ‘close to a contract extension’ this season, but couldn’t get it done.

I wonder if Stan is watching Bicks in the playoffs and banging his head on the desk for not having offered a mere half million more when he had the chance.

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Let’s enjoy feeling warm and fuzzy for a day, this team has earned it. Come tonight, let’s remember that the last series wasn’t over at 1-3, and this one certainly isn’t over at 2-0

The storm she is a coming.

  • Bob Lanz

Six yes six… Enough said for now

  • guackyhawk

I don’t think 6 works. To go six we either:
    - lose both 3 and 4, win 5, win 6 (I don’t think we will lose both 3 and 4, and if we did lose 3 and 4 why would we thinkw e would win 6)
    - win one of 3 and 4, lose one of 3 and 4, lose 5, win 6 (I don’t think we lose 5 and win 6; weird combo)

    So, I think its either 5 or 7 . . .

    What am I missing?

    • birdhead

The Hawks have 10 wins. They need 16. So … 6.

      • guackyhawk

Oh. Totally duh me. Sorry everyone — I thought it was “Hawks in 6″ in this series.

  • Why

When did Nick Leddy turn into a Bobby Orr level stickhandler and skater?

    • Accipiter

      In high school.
