Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers: Fear The Fin, Battle of California

For the third time in seventeen days and the second in a week, the Hawks and Sharks will square off, once again on suspect United Center ice. In this abbreviated season, this will close out the season series with the Teal in relatively brief fashion. And ordinarily one would think that it still isn’t ending nearly soon enough for the Sharks given how the first two games have gone. But tonight they have an opportunity to be the proverbial turd in the punchbowl while still clawing their way back into contention for a division once again no one but Anaheim seems particularly interested in winning.

Since Passenger 19 and his merry band of mischief makers left Chicago a week ago, they’ve only had one game, a win Tuesday evening in St. Louis, finally snapping their 7 game winless streak. And though the result was different, the means were similar to those during the 0-4-3 stretch. The Sharks once again mustered only two goals on rookie Jake Allen, making him face 25 shots. And though the Blues are designed to limit opportunities, that’s still a paltry number when facing someone as green as Allen. And at the other end of things, Antii Niemi resumed what has been by and large a stellar campaign for him, allowing a single goal to the Blues. As a matter of fact, in his 10 starts not facing the Hawks, Niemi has only no more than three goals in any start, which has only happened twice.

As for our Men of Four Feathers, it appears that by all outward accounts that they dodged a tremendous bullet Tuesday night, as Jannik Hansen’s elbow to the back of the head of delicate flower Marian Hossa did not cause a concussion. Hossa will jump right back into his spot alongside linemates Brandon Saad and Jonathan Toews tonight, even if it feels a bit rushed. The Hawks haven’t had the greatest track record in the recent past in dealing with concussions (see Kruger, Marcus), so the hope becomes that Hossa doesn’t sustain any further damage while already in a delicate state.

Elsewhere in the forward corps, the charming and ebullient Dan Carcillo will rejoin the lineup after missing a month with some manner of knee/ankle thing. Mercifully, Carcillo will be plying his trade on the fourth line with Kruger and Michael Frolik, but the fear here is that one bad shift from Saad gets Car Bomb a quick promotion. Also, given Carcillo’s inflated sense of importance, there’s the very real possibility that he puts the Hawks on a penalty kill early with his exuberance, particularly against a team who has somehow “wronged” the Hawks in their past two matchups. Either way it’s still better than having Brandon Bollig out there, but not by much.

On the blue line, Brent Seabrook’s bag appears to be healed enough to give it a go tonight, so that brings the count up to four pairs returning to normal on the back end. It hasn’t been specified whether it will be Rozsival or Brookbank with Leddy to this point, but neither has noticeably limited Leddy in doing what he’s supposed to do, which is push the play. Corey Crawford practiced and is cleared to play, but Ray Emery once again will get the start tonight in the cage.

With a little bit of history on the line tonight for the Hawks, expect the Sharks to come out hard to start to silence the crowd early. Even if the Sharks aren’t running around trying to halt the Hawks’ streak and avenge two recent clownings, there should be room wide on their defensemen. This will be contingent on the Hawks absorbing some cannonball like forecheckers and making patient breakout passes. And again, in spite of their recent offensive struggles, the Sharks do have the skill (however latent) in guys like Thornton, Marleau, Pavelski, and Couture to get Emery moving and exploit his lateral stiffness. So sticks in passing lanes and rebound control are paramount. Tonight starts a busy four day stretch on West Madison. Get it started right. Let’s go Hawks.

I’m nit-picking here, McClure, but Anaheim sure seems intent on winning that division. Hell, ultimately, I’d prefer to have their last 10 games than I would the last 10 of the Hawks … they got 18 points, we got 17.

I kind of like the prospect of Carbomb playing alongside Kruger & Frolik. Certainly a more skilled player than either Mayers or Bollig, if a bit less disciplined than the former. I can see them getting a few more scoring opportunities per game with his addition.

    • JesusMarianHossa

I’m fine with it too except for the special teams aspect. Meaning, Carcillo should never be present on any special teams unit and also he has a higher likelihood to place the opponent in a beneficial special teams spot by doing something stupid.

He and Mayers can be The Rockers for the rest of the year and tag each other in and out. Also because I think there’s a better than good chance that Carcillo ends up like Marty Jannetty when his career is over.

“brings the count up to four pairs returning to normal on the back end.” That is the undisputed best line written in any game preview for this season if not longer.

  • Hi, I’m Bob LeDonne

THIS IS BOB LEDONNE’S RIP OFF OF BWANA’S BEER OF THE DAY-AY WHISKEY OF THE DAY-AY!

Yes, fo-olks. There are two things I lo-ove in life.1) Whiskey. 2) Lengthening one syllable words into two syllable words. Butt, you didn’t come here to listen to me talk about syllabic pentameter. You also didn’t come here to listen to me talk about whiskey. So, why I am doing this? I don’t know, I wish I would quit asking myself questions.

Today’s whiskey of the day-ay is SINGLE BARREL EAGLE RARE! A 10-year expression of the same mashbill that makes up the incredibly affordable and delicious Buffalo Trace Bourbon, this bourbon has spent 2-3 extra years in the barrel and the barrels are generally selected for their quality. It’s single barrel, though, so if you’re a discerning whisgeek (WHISKEYGEEK), you’ll notice slight variations between bottles. Eagle Rare also comes in a 17-year version, as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.

You should be able to find this lil birdy at any major Chicagoland liquor store. I will say though, Binny’s will occasionally do a hand-selected barrel program, and their taste in whiskey is on the opposite end of the quality spectrum to their commercial programming (at least they’re not Chicagoland Chevy Dealers though, AMIRITE?). If you’re lucky, you can find this quality choice for under $30 for a 25.36 oz bottle (FUCK YOU METRIC SYSTEM), or $60 for family size.

A solid every day pour. Have at thee!

    • cliffkoroll

      like sha-arks?

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

The Phrase, “It it’s not Scottish, it’s Crap,” comes to mind, but of course, even the Scots will admit this does NOT apply to whisky (or whiskey).

Anyway, Bob, thanks for the recommendation, and I look forward to reading the results of you trying to ty-pe ‘syllabic pentameter’ in the 3rd period after having imbibed.

      • Hi, I’m Bob LeDonne

I dare say the best whiskeys in the world are of the bourbon variety.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I’ll apologize in advance for my hockey ignorance, but they don’t let us Iowa folks out much.

My concern about tonight’s game is Hossa having a relapse & Carbomb playing reduced minutes because he’s not really in game shape, leaving us with 10 1/2 forwards. Could having Carbomb on the 4th line mitigate this a little bit? Maybe I’m just worried about nothing.

    Oh, & fuck Jannik Hansen!

    • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

I kind of wish Hossa stayed out a game but on the Carello point, the fewer minutes, the better. He’s replacing Bollig so the bar’s pretty low for the TOI impact he could have anyway.

  • steeg of their own

Hey McClure (or any of the ToS)? Your links to BoC and FtF are borked. Might want to check on those.

  • Skags

I realize that the Blackhawks organ I zation doesn’t have a sterling reputation when it comes to concussions.

However, I think that Marian Hossa knows his body better than anyone. He is an established veteran player with concussion history. There is absolutely positively no doubt in my mind that he would not be on the ice if he thinks he shouldn’t be. There is too much awareness and too much at stake.

I think Kruger may have rushed it given his fledgling status as a player. Not wanting to lose his spot on the roster, etc. I could be wrong, but I see a lot more pressure on Kruger to return than Hossa.

I think if he’s passing whatever concussion tests we have now and feels good enough, then he should play.

    In Hossa I trust.

    • Accipiter

Given how long of a road back it was for Hossa to fully recuperate from the concussion he suffered last spring, I am also thinking he is more than aware of what is at stake if he returns prematurely.

    • steeg of their own

I’m not worried about the organization sending him back before Hossa himself thinks that he’s okay. I’m worried that most hockey players tend to drastically underestimate how long it takes to fully recover from injuries, including and especially brain injuries which can be sort of fuzzy grey areas anyway.

It’s not about the org rushing him, it’s more about the player wanting to play and the fact that current concussion protocols may allow players back on the ice when they’re still at about 80% or when a few more days might help them not be as vulnerable to further injury.

I have no doubt that Hossa feels good enough to play (who was it that once said that for pro NHL players, the regular season was less a matter of “are you injured” and more a matter of “is it absolutely debilitating”?). I just worry that he’d be better off with a few more days to make sure he’s fine, and the team can afford that right now. I do hope that Q plays him limited minutes tonight.

  • girlphoenix

Ben Smith might/probably will play tonight in Rockford!

  • RyanOliver56

Alright, first time on the board lets give it a whirl, not too happy Carcillo is breaking the lineup but he sadly is part of our depth and him being of Injury is good. So as McClure noted better than Bollig. But better than Mayers?…I dunno…Anyhow hope Rosi is in I feel hes more solid all around and more offense minded where Brookbank sits there like a stick in the mud waiting to lean towards someone and call it a punch…Meh…should be a good third and final meeting.

Oh and on Emery…been solid but alot of that has to do with the D-Men. Hes inspired more faith these past few games minus the minimal side to side hes had to make…we shall see.

    • DuHawk

Agreed on all points; except for Carcillo vs. Mayers. As long as Carcillo keeps his wits about him, he’s much more skilled/valuable; just gotta keep his head straight.

      • RyanOliver56

Thats the problem hes such a liability…but last night he kept his kewl.

    • putmeinthemadhouse

Carcillo is most definitely better than mayers.
