NHL: Vancouver Canucks at Chicago Blackhawks

Nice Catch, Hayes: Canucks 3 – Hawks 3 (Hawks win nerf basketball)

Boy, there’s a lot to get to here, so let’s just jump into the bullets, shall we?

-Let’s get to the most pressing issue. Why the fuck can’t the United Center spell, “Lightning?” It has a fucking T you dummards!

Ok, now that’s out of the way…

-Where to start? We’ve spent some time bemoaning the Hawks habit of sitting on leads, or doing their best to blow them, or straight up blowing them. It didn’t feel like that tonight, and I recognize how stupid that sentence sounds now. But the Hawks weren’t under siege until a Rozsival penalty, where both Toews and Saad went to block a shot and didn’t. Then it’s just a one goal game and all it takes is a puck squirting out of a board battle and one shot.

The Hawks did manage 13 3rd period shots. They pressed, they forechecked. Where they got themselves in trouble was straight up declining two 3rd period power plays that could have ended it. Instead of stepping on the throat, the Hawks played with their food. That was a problem last year and has been this year, where the Hawks just use a 3rd period PP with a lead to run the clock instead of cutting the jugular. They should stop that.

-I don’t want to devolve into Canuck fan-style bellyaching and caterwauling, but if Jannik Hansen’s suspension is any less than what Duncan Keith got, the NHL will have proved to be…..well, the NHL. Which is why I expect that to be exactly what happens. But I sure can’t spot the difference in the “hits.”

-I will point out however, the contrast between Quenneville’s measured comments after this game tonight and Alain Vingeault’s verbal menstruation after last spring’s with Keith’s hit. Now you know why this team has all the mental fragility of a suburban teenage girl.

-The Canucks are a very good team. There’s an even better one within there if it wasn’t buried in petulant and irresponsible bullshit that the Canucks have drowned themselves in before. As soon as the Hawks took the lead, Bieksa was running around looking for decapitations. The complaints to the ref got more frequent. The niggling crap became more obvious. I guess they can argue it worked, as they tied the game. But it’ll tie the noose once again around their necks in the spring, and it’s a lesson they just refuse to learn.

-Yeah, I know, tying goal. Bieksa remains a liability because his brain runs out of his ear far too easily. But he’ll avoid the scrutiny when it all goes balls-up for them again that will be aimed at the goaltending because….I don’t know, he’s a good Canadian boy who’s a good quote.

-Dan Hamhuis….I almost can’t say the name without laughing now.

-On to good stuff. Hossa’s second goal was a monumental effort, but it stemmed from Saad outworking Burrows and Bieksa to open up the space. Saad has hit something of a wall the past few games, but it was good to see him still make something happen.

-Sadly, I genuinely fear that it may be a long time before we see something like that from Hossa again.

-Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane had a combined 11 shots. Dave Bolland won 13 of his 23 draws. Raise your hand if you think these two facts are linked.

-I’m told Zack Kassian played.

-While this streak hasn’t been a completely dominant one at all times, the Hawks poise with the puck in their own zone continues to grow. Yeah, sometimes it’s even too much. But I’d rather the Hawks err on that side than the panicky one, because it’s creating so much offense for them.

-If Emery doesn’t let this weak one in in the 1st, would Vancouver have scored the rest of the game? I wonder.

-If you need something to get excited about, I suppose the 2nd period where the Hawks completely rolled the second best team in the West without Seabrook would be a start.

16 is better than 15. There’s still stuff to be sorted out. But the Hawks get to work on those without having it cost them points already. Bow’s ahout that?

  • putmeinthemadhouse

Fucking arseholes, the lot of them. Heres to seeing hossa healthy and playing on friday, and hansen shanabanned and the nucks losing.

    • 10thMountainFire

I think Sam’s comment about seeing Hossa at that level again soon is sadly correct.

      • Preacher

I would guess a week symptom-free at least.

        • 10thMountainFire

I think Sam was referring to the level of play Hoss displayed. Even if he’s not injured badly, it’s likely that he’ll feel the effects both physically and mentally for a bit.

          • Preacher

I’m just talking about Hossa getting back on the ice.

          • Accipiter

He may have been really scared/freaked out after the hit. I had a feeling he wasn’t coming back to the game, hopefully just a precautionary measure. You experience a severe concussion like he did and something happens to your head again, you are going to need some time to really evaluate exactly what you are feeling. Hope Hossa is okay.

          • Joe DeTolve

That’s what I am hoping aswell that Gapski, Dr, Terry just said fuck it get him off the ice no questions asked..

          • Z-man19

Considering the Hawk’s position in the game and in the standings, there was no reason to take any chances. I’m hoping everyone was just being extra cautious.

          • 334Rules

I’m hoping that’s the case as well. From our vantage point I couldn’t tell whether the worst of the impact was the elbow to the back of the head or the contact with the ice.

          • Joe Banks

After Torres Hit in April, not right until December. So, not back until… December?

          • Joe Banks

When I had my concussions in the 70′s, they didn’t know dick. This is bad, real bad.

          • nextgame

I’ve got to believe that thoughts along the lines of ‘If I have to worry about my brains getting scrambled every time I step on the ice maybe I need to think about walking away from this. After all, I’d like to be able to recognize my wife and daughter when I’m done playing.’ would run through Hossa’s mind after this.
If he decided enough is enough and hung ‘em up sooner rather than later I’d be disappointed as a fan, but understand pefectly.

      • Waylon

Looking at that replay makes me so pissed off all over again – that asshole made no attempt to play the puck, he just let his elbow go straight into Hoss’s head. Fuck that team, fuck their management, fuck their ownership to hell.

        • 10thMountainFire

There’s absolutely no question whatsoever, having watched it a half-dozen times, that the hit was intentional and fucking head-hunting. And I have every faith that the NHL will fuck this up.

          • Joe Banks

Like they did with Corey’s concussion?

          • 10thMountainFire

Yep. And the officials blowing the call on the Kings stomping through Emery late in the third on Sunday.

          • Sparky_The_Barbarian

The dead giveaway, he had his eyes on Hossa and his fist closed. If you’re reaching for a high puck, your glove is open.

  • Accipiter

    Fuck You Hansen !!!

    • 10thMountainFire

At this point, it’s easier to list the players on that team we HAVEN’T said ‘fuck you!’ in anger to after a cheap shot. Who is left? Cam Barker?

      • Accipiter

        Malhotra is okay by me.

        • 10thMountainFire

Does he even count anymore? Isn’t he still on IR?

          • TheFullAmonte

Pretty sure they told him that he can’t play anymore cause of his eye. I think he still wants to play but it doesn’t sound like it is safe for his health.

          • DesertHawk

Odd that of all te teams in the league, Vancouver is the one not allowing a guy to play for his own health.

          • Sparky_The_Barbarian

And AV says he’ll stay there until he learns to hit people who aren’t looking in the head.

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

There’s good and bad Fuck You’s. For instance when we say it to Luongo or Ginger, it’s usually because they’ve been playing well. And I agree with the above, Malhotra deserves a classier organization to be a part of.

  • 10thMountainFire

Sam… this was fucking awesome. Thanks for putting in the time tonight.

    • SamFels

Consider yourself lucky I still have 10 fingers to type with.

      • Accipiter

        I only need one.

  • Z-man19

I have to agree with Sam on blowing this lead. I didn’t see a team that was laying back, minus the PP shit show. They had possession in their o-zone and had some great chances to end the game. If Oduya gets that puck past center and dumps it in, game over.

Fuck Hansen and all the rest of the dickbags. Get well Hoss

    • Accipiter

Yeah, Oduya made a really poor decision there. Hopefully he learns from it as well as the rest of the Hawks, we have had it cost us a few times when we haven’t shot the puck into the zone properly/or deep enough into the zone.

      • 10thMountainFire

He’s played so well this year that he was due for a stretch of shitty play. We got the win so I am confident he’ll be alright… and we need him to be if Biscuit is going to miss a few more.

      • Joe Banks

        He’s no Campoli

        • Sparky_The_Barbarian

No, Campoli saves his brain farts for OT in the playoffs.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

If anything, Johnny was trying to do too much in the final minutes. Not laying back, but still not the smart hockey he plays the other 58 minutes.

    • Waylon

I still think that if any of the break – aways had been goals, that game would’ve been over midway through the 3rd. Some great chances, but none went it.

  • amontesawesome

Granted it’s only been 6 periods, but I have become increasingly convinced that Vancouver doesn’t belong on the same ice as the Hawks. I haven’t seen any chance data or Fenwick numbers, but 19-81-20 did whatever they wanted in the first meeting, and it looked like they did even more tonight.

    • http://twitter.com/llUrbanAchiever Jeff Lebowski

and they channel that frustration into headhunting diving bullshit hockey

      • 10thMountainFire

I’ve tried to be objective about that franchise, it’s coach, and its fans. I don’t like empty-headed meatballing. But I can’t find a redeeming quality for anything related to the Vancouver Canucks other than Roberto Luongo’s personality. Other than that, the entire fuckin thing is embarrassing the league. So fuck em. I hope we meet em in the first round and sweep their whining, cheap, bone-headed asses home for the summer. Eat shit, Vancouver. Perennial losers.

        • Preacher

When asked about supplemental discipline from the league, AV said, “Not a chance.” He said it shouldn’t even have been a penalty. It was only called after Tazer talked to the refs. (This is why we have such a high opinion of the Nucks and their head coach.)

          • Accipiter

Wait ’til their GM chimes in.

          • QCBlackhawk

Seriously. Got some Nucks fan industrial-grade ass-hurt when I posted the ESPN twitter quoting AV and suggesting that their attitude comes from above. Literally just the quote before saying “shit flows down from above.”

          • 10thMountainFire

They’re upset that they’re running out of things to set on fire after butt-hurting losses. It killed them tonight not to destroy our dreams of the record.

        • red palace

If I may……I would add Malhotra as an exception, he’s just too classy for the Nucks. How he was able to endure centering a line with Torres and Hansen, I will never understand. Of course, I wish him all the best on his continuing eye issues.

          Otherwise, I’m totally with ya.

        • Joe Banks

I never thought I would see the day I like Roberto Luongo… but…

  • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

Can I put my hand down now?

    • Accipiter

Only if you think Sharps and Kanes shot totals are not directly related to Bollands FO winning %.

      • 10thMountainFire

I would just as soon tell him to keep it up. That conversation will kill us all.

  • Preacher

Oduya had a couple of “what is he doing?” plays when he turned the puck over with rather mysterious decision-making. It seems he’s good for one or two a game lately. But then, he IS putting in a ton of ice time. And as for Hansen, causing a concussion = very bad. Targeting a guy’s head who’s already HAD a concussion? That’s downright monstrous. The suspension should be brutal. I’m sure the decision will be….

    • http://twitter.com/llUrbanAchiever Jeff Lebowski

Not to mention Hossa’s 2 goals in the second and the fact that this happened a minute into the third…not to mention the violent cheap shot he put on Toews earlier in this game. He crosschecked him into the nuck neck, sending Toew’s head crashing into the crossbar…not to mention his violent and careless swinging of the stick that lead to Bollands brief injury.

No calls on anything but the Hossa hit. If a call is made on any of those previous plays, I doubt that idiot risks another penalty on a blatant attempt to injure Hossa. He was given the go ahead by shitty officiating.

      • 10thMountainFire

Upboat. I thought the same thing. I think someone stated that they needed to rough up 81, Hansen had the shot, and took it. Fuck em. They lost. Eat shit on the flight back to your dumpster fires, shitstains.

        • Joe Banks

It’s as if you can read my mind?

      • High and Wide

I thought the Toews cheap shot into the net was Ballard? (Could be wrong.)

    • 10thMountainFire

      …nothing.

  • The Doctor

Hansen and Ballard are a couple of real fuck-sticks, aren’t they? I’m optimistic about Hoss as Q said he seemed to be ok, but maybe I shouldn’t get my hopes up.

Going to the game on Friday. I’d like to see some history made.

    • 10thMountainFire

I’d like to see a Hoss goal win it.

    • fromheretoinfirmary

Yea I feel optimistic about hossa’s health as well. the usually tight lipped Q indicated a couple of times that Hoss seemed to be doing pretty alright. Let’s hope he’s only out a few games at the most.

  • amontesawesome

Also, at the risk of rehashing the FO% thing… Against San Jose Bolland won a higher percentage of draws than tonight and Kane and Sharp combined for 3 shots.

    • ahnfire

Admittedly I was watching the game at a loud bar & didn’t get to pay as close attention as I’d like, but what I noticed (in the third, at least) was that even when we won the F/Os, the Nucks would get control of the puck. I was screaming that it looked like we were slow to gain control & the Nucks would forecheck/backcheck like crazy, gaining control of the puck or at least preventing the Hawks from being able to hold onto the play.

      • ahnfire

basically, I don’t care about the FO% if we can’t maintain possession the times we do win it. I need to learn to write better.

        • Z-man19

I’d be happy if you worked on typing first :P

          • ahnfire

            :P

    • MattC86

I’d be interested to know if the CORSI and behind the net for this line has been improving. Despite scoring less over the last week or so, they (eye test alert) seem to be getting skull-fucked less in terms of overall play.

The more aggravating problem they are prone to is high-slot/point turnovers on the rush, with all three of them caught deep. Happened at least thrice yesterday and several times over the weekend.

    • ChiBlackhawks

      ahh, stats.

  • red palace

All the bullshit aside for a moment, that was a thrilling game by the Hawks. There seemed to be a lot of staggered shift changes, where one or two players could switch, but not the complete line. From my view, that was the result of an incredibly consistent high-energy pace set by our boys.

    • Accipiter

I liked the heads up play, not touching the puck when we could have been called for TMM, small things like that and all the short D zone/break out passes make my day.

  • Country_Bumpkin

Was at the game tonight and it took every ounce of restraint not to kill the Canuck douche-fans sitting one section over. That team from top to bottom is one big sack of shit as well as the coach. Hansen needs to pay dearly and I hope he gets blown up this season as well as the Sedins and that fuckface Bieksa.

    • Joe Banks

      AMEN

  • 10thMountainFire

Someone over at NM stated that Hansen cross-checked a ref recently. I looked for some background and found this video of the taint smudge:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Uu_VKz9PnyE#!

Yeah, this guy was just playing the puck.

    • Accipiter

If you watch it from the side angle his stick is on the Sha-arks player and so are his eyes. He is shoving the player and the ref is pushed as well. I think he is a fuckwad, but cross-checking the ref was not what he was trying to do.

      • 10thMountainFire

That’s not how it looks to me. But you could be correct. I still think it looks like he shoves the official. But even if you’re right, apparently this guy has a history of fucking people up by not being able to control his own fucking arms, so there’s that.

        • Accipiter

Either way, Hansen is a douche.

          • 10thMountainFire

            I love you.

          • Accipiter

            ditto.

          • red palace

All you need to know: see what Hansen has to say, about a third of the way down.

            http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=629005

          • TheFullAmonte

            Ah, that fucker

          • 10thMountainFire

Wow. There is so much now to this shit tonight. For fuck’s sake, this needs to be set. Torres was supposed to be the ‘example’. Instead, that shithead Bettman reduced the goddamn sentence. So now here you have Hansen, Torres’ former linemate, going after Hossa’s head almost at the exact same spot on the ice that Torres did a year ago. Fuck this shit. If the NHL drops this again, there is no hope until a player is literally permanently fucked up on the ice. Seriously, I mean… what else needs to happen here?

          • Joe Banks

            I worship you

    • Tyler Simmons

Hanson has been known to lose his head overseas, so don’t let his lack of penalties/discipline in the NHL fool you. Here he takes a run at a D-man and gets in a fight during a blowout loss earlier this year – http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=kuXniCCAC6E#t=243s

And a ‘nucks blogger talking about him getting suspended by the IIHF because he “couldn’t be calmed down” and despite being pulled away by officials, he continued to search for “new confrontations” – http://vansunsportsblogs.com/2012/07/27/jannik-hansen-could-not-be-calmed-down-receives-one-game-suspension-from-iihf/

Sounds kinda like their version of Bolland. Only where Bolland will take it up to the edge, Hanson seems to have a tendency to lose his shit and go over that edge quite a bit.

  • QCBlackhawk

So, since Seabs got blasted in the junk do were refer to him as “Biscuits”, as in plural, now?

    • Joe Banks

      Rubber Biscuit?

      • DesertHawk

I think I see what you did there.

  • TheFullAmonte

Reading Hansen’s comments makes me want to find him right now and beat some sense into him

    • 10thMountainFire

Don’t bother. He won’t drop the gloves.

      • Joe Banks

        “Turtle Hansen”

        • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Never hit a man when he’s down. Much easier to kick him.

      • DesertHawk

He doesn’t have to drop the gloves to receive punches on the nose.

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Well, not if you’[re facing him.

      • 334Rules

That was unbelievable. You cheap shot a guy like that and then you skate away from the other team’s attempt at engaging? That really is beneath contempt.

    • nextgame

You’ll have to wait until they unhook his balls from the car battery. Otherwise you might shock yourself.
      (See BigC’s suggestion above.)

  • QCBlackhawk

…”Don’t ever fuckin’ do it again.”

Props on the title. Major League is good stuff.

  • TheFullAmonte

Well this game did a good job of reminding me how oblivious everyone associated with that Vancouver franchise is to everything in the real world.

  • mightymikeD

Lest we forget, Bollig jumping Weise for what was (astonishingly) a clean hit on Kruger.. granted there were nearly two shorties on the subsequent PP but if the Hawks have learned one lesson against the Nucks it should be “No Stoopid Penalties”. Still, at least it sent the message not to fuck with the Hawks superstars right… ?

    • nextgame

This is green in my mind.

    • MattC86

The only thing more frustrating than that was the degree to which Edzo and Foley praised it, just a week after the Bickell/Getzlaf/Staubitz stupidity turned that game around in the Hawks favor!

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

You just made me edit my above post.

    • Flavius

It’s such a stupid, ineffectual vestige of the old days, when as Mark Howe said on going into the HOF, players policed the game themselves. Either do away with fighting completely (hefty fines, suspensions for repeat offenders) or do away with the damned instigator. This “compromise” era is a joke and the silly goddamned staged fights are an embarrassment. And, most importantly, the 25 game Torres suspension should not be the extreme example for that type of play, it should be the baseline standard. The morning after, I am still sick to my stomach and saddened by that shameful cheap shot to one of the most talented and determined players I have ever seen. I love this game so much, but the way it is governed sickens me.

      • Joe Banks

You mean the 21 game suspension?

  • Bwana

Away Bolland: 4-0-1, Home Hjalmarsson: 0-0-1, WC Kane: 4-0-1, Black Ice Toews: 3-0-0, Socks: 1-0-0, Hat: 1-0-0

    • Accipiter

      No pants 13-0-3.

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

You should have worn pants and drunk scotch for two of those games.

        • Accipiter

I had a 2nd period rally scotch and poured another as soon as Bieksabub tied it.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

      2nd period scotch 13-0-1

      • Z-man19

What about the 1st and 3rd period scotch?

  • BigCSouthside

So I think we are all in agreement. Hansen’s balls need to be wired to a car battery

    • ahnfire

      I knew you’d understand me.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

He’d probably like it. At least someone other than himself would handle them for once.

    • Joe Banks

Red is Positive, Black is Negative.

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Once you’ve had black… Never mind.

  • RWCrum

    On a positive note……
I’d like to pat Andrew Shaw on the head for that game winning goal in the shoot out. A nice confident move to the net by a player who seems to be slowly maturing right before our eyes. He was a surprise pick for the third turn (at least to me) and he rewarded Q’s confidence in him with that goal.

    • Flavius

I thought he looked better– more assertive, more aware, better with the puck– in the offensive zone. too, especially on the power play.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

What do we always say about a butterfly goalie? “Get them moving and go high stick side.” Shaw did it in clinical fashion and deserves high praise.

    • Joe Banks

I really did not expect anything from Shaw this year, but he is maturing rapidly. Kudos to all our “BBHawks” this year.

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Or as we’ll refer to them in five years, The Core.

    • Paul the Fossil

Yes! Coming into this season I was pretty skeptical of Shaw ever being anything but a 4th-line chaos Muppet but he’s been taking a real step forward. I dunno if it’s coaching or just time or something in the local water supply or what but the Blackhawks have several young players whose games are maturing in the right ways all at the same time: Kruger, Leddy, Saad, Bickell, Shaw…plenty of NHL GMs would feel good about having two such scenarios underway in their lineups.

      • Waylon

I agree on the offensive part of Shaw, he’s becoming a beast in the corners and in front of the net as well – but I’m not sure about his defensive abilities at this point, and he still has brain farts that lead to stupid penalties at critical times.

        • Paul the Fossil

He’s only committed 3 minor penalties, total, in 16 games so far. Seems like he’s more under control.

    • birdhead

He surprised me too, but the radio call guys were saying he’s been consistently good in practice. We may see him more often.

  • zacked

“I don’t want to devolve into Canuck fan-style bellyaching and
caterwauling, but if Jannik Hansen’s suspension is any less than what
Duncan Keith got, the NHL will have proved to be…..well, the NHL. Which
is why I expect that to be exactly what happens. But I sure can’t spot
    the difference in the “hits.”

I hate the Canucks as much as any right thinking person, but I disagree with that strongly, Keith’s was worse. Keith’s hit was obviously intentional retaliation. Hansen’s might have been intentional, but it’s not obvious and I doubt it. Keith’s hit was a flying elbow with 2-3 steps behind it, Hansens was mostly stationary. I think he should get 2 games, he’ll probably get 1.

    • MattC86

I think this is fair. Everybody thinking right admitted Keith went for the decapitation shot; you can at least make an argument that Hansen was going for the puck then decided to get a shot in. 2-3 games would be right, but I have a feeling he’ll get 0-1.

    • ahnfire

Rationally, I agree with you. Keith’s hit was much worse.

However, my inner Hossa-fangirl is shrieking for Hansen’s blood.

      • MattC86

I agree with this, too. I just am trying to be as rational as possible.

        • ahnfire

          …it’s just so haaaaaaard.

I continue to wish horrible things on the Vancouver franchise. May they forever fail & burn in misery.

          • MattC86

What, you mean like this (any excuse ever to post this):

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

At least Hansen can cross his fingers and claim to have been playing the puck. No such defense for Kieth, except that he was paying back an elbow to his own head.

      • ChiBlackhawks

at least you’re trying. I have yet to find a Canucks fan who will say about their own team’s players what we do of Keith’s hit. Rationality? What is that?

    • nextgame

I know I’m decidedly in the minority with this opinion but…
I’ve always felt that in the case of an intentional and deliberate action (like Hansen’s forearm/elbow to Hossa’s head) that causes another player to miss games due to injury resulting from that action, the offending player should have to sit out until the injured player is able to resume playing.
So, if Hossa (god forbid) is out for a month, Hansen is out for a month. If he were to miss the remainder of the season, tough luck Jannik, take up knitting and see you in the fall. (Likewise, Keith would have had to sit until Sedin (fuck if I know which one it was) returned. Which, I believe, means he would have missed the rest of the Hawk’s season.)
I know it seems draconian. And there are always arguments that enforcement is problematic because teams might play with when a player is actually recovered from an injury. But I genuinely believe that if this were put in place you’d see an end to this kind of shit quickly.

      • Joe Banks

Though I agree with your sentiment, it will never happen.

I would say if a blow to the head results in concussion, automatic 5 game suspension. leave your feet, 25 game suspension. That will put an end to it.

    • Joe Banks

You’re probably right. Don’t be too surprised if he gets zero games. The NHL does not truly care about concussions. They only care if it’s Sidney Crosby. (Yes, I’m in a foul mood.)
      * Hansen’s comments after the game seemed to be mocking Keith’s comments after hitting Sedin. Remarkably similar.
      * In my opinion, this is all a reflection on Alain Vigenault. Easily the dirtiest coach of this era.

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

But Hossa is a big name.

  • CornelisonsFlagPointer

    Get Well Soon, Hoss-ah.

On a brighter note, alert play on a couple of penalty kills resulted in breakaways that nearly payed off, and guys were in position around the goal for rebounds. Not as much ‘pond hockey’ stuff, more organized, and they continue to improve. Lots of potential for that to get even better…

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Getting past the emotion of Janik the panic, this was a big win with our #1 G and a top pair D man out for the game, even with the blown lead. Yes, another blown lead, and I’m going to single out Oduya, even though it’s not (all) his fault. Lagtely he’s been Superman for 59 minutes per game and The Nutty Professor for the last 1:30. Simply put, he’s trying to do too much. While I don’t want to spend the entire third period in the D zone, once we’re inside 2:00, there’s nothing wrong with Getting it Out, Getting it Deep, and making them come 200 feet to set up their cycle. (And as MMD says: NO STOOPID PENALTIES)

Back to Hansen, NHL.COM says he’ll have a hearing. I’d link, but that’s the whole story. The thing that really galls me is how a coach will stand there in a presser and say, “It’s unfortunate that someone got hurt, but it’s a hockey play, shouldn’t even have been a penalty.” Sure, a coach should defend his players, but this is bull shit, part of the problem, and needs to be addressed by the league.

Who’s to say if Tippet or AV took Torres or Hansen behind closed doors and gave them hell privately? It’s possible, in the same way it’s possible I might end up married to Emma Thompson. Why is this part of the problem (Coaches defending their players, not my alleged ‘in heart’ adultery): Because now you have a goon standing there saying, “Coach says I done good!” // Toothless mouth breathing grin.

  • FattyBeef

Vigneault is a fucking piece of shit

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

The audacity to claim that there shouldn’t have even been a penalty called on Hansen and that he’s not worried about supplemental discipline. I mean, I’m just fucking speechless. Alaign Vigneault is a piece of shit who should step in front of the nearest bus.

      • Joe Banks

Hot Tub. Battery cables. Nut Sack. He can sit next to Hansen.

  • cliffkoroll

Vancouver. City of beauty. City of style. City of…danger. Scientists have lately identified the source of the danger. It has to do with a chemical imbalance in the meandering River Douche, a lethal waterway that wends itself through this otherwise charming metropolis.

The latest victim is one Jannik Hansen. Growing up in Bjumblfjuk Denmark, just outside Copenghagen, young Hansen was a kind and thoughtful lad, beloved by all.

But that kind young man no longer exists. The transformation, upon slurping from the lazy River Douche, into an anarchist hipster douchebag –of-dicks is now, sadly, complete. Folks in Bjumblfjuk have disowned young Hansen, condemning him to live out his days among fellow anarchist hipster douchebags-of-dicks in Vancouver, City of Losers.

    • mightymikeD

      love it

    • ahnfire

      heheh Bjumblfjuk.

    • Accipiter

Just like any other rabid great dane, he needs to be put down.

  • mightymikeD

NM has a (honestly) fair and even-handed game wrap up.. there just seems to be something missing…

    • ahnfire

what are you talking about? nothing happened during the game that could be worth discussion, nothing at all.

      • Accipiter

Bolland did hit Higgins a little late.

        • ahnfire

ugh, Bolland is so despicable! how *dare* he.

          • mightymikeD

well.. Bolland IS despicable.. that’s why we love him

          • ahnfire

shhh, you’re blocking my false outrage.

          • Joe Banks

And Bollig is a piece of shit…

    • nextgame

If you ignore it, it didn’t happen.

    • Country_Bumpkin

I don’t even want to venture there. I like having an IQ above room temp. Let me guess, they were outraged by the refereeing and they just saw a “hockey play” occur out there. Oh, and they still don’t understands why no one respects them. Is that close to accurate?

      • mightymikeD

nope. It was, as I’ve said, a fine write-up. Just didn’t mention the Hansen/Hossa incident. At all. Can’t speak for the comments, mind. There’s a Hawks fan themselves in there and all.

        • Country_Bumpkin

          Damn. Oh well.

    • Joe Banks

      I saw you’re comment there…

  • MattC86

I think what’s pissing me off most – and this goes beyond this game or this team – is that we all spend countless hours talking about fighting and instigators and retaliation and “The Code,” when the whole thing has turned into a fucking scam. To whit, Bollig goes after Weise after a clean and legal shot on Kruger. Weise answers the bell, fights, Bollig gets the additional penalty, Hawks have to kill a penalty, but the team is “inspired by Bollig’s noble defense of his teammates” or some such nonsense.

Hansen, at the very least, launches a reckless forearm that drills Hossa in the back of the head and leaves a superstar crumpled in a heap from what is (regardless of intent) clearly an illegal shot. And yet nobody gets in on Hansen right away – except the captain jawing at him – and later, all Bollig can do is grapple at him.

The whole protector thing is such a scam, because nobody gets taken to task after an illegal shot. They go to the box or get thrown out or whatever, but the goons are left to police up legal hits on their fourth line teammates. You’re telling me Torres having to endure a couple seconds of Jamal Mayers was retribution? Or Hansen undoubtedly having to fight Bickell or somebody else (he’ll never drop with Bollig even if they do get on the same shift) next time will be retribution? No. The whole fucking “goon protects our superstars” thing is bullshit. I’d love to see the last recent really dirty play that got an immediate “accountability fight” like Bollig gave Weise or Staubitz gave Bickell last week.

The whole thing is a fucking scam to make us feel better about the fact that dirty plays by shitbags in this sport knock out superstars. And if I were a Canucks fan or a fan of any team that has endured Carcillo, Matt Cooke, Tie Domi, Chris Simon, or Claude Lemieux cheap shots, I’d feel the same. It’s all bullshit.

  • laaarmer

My game observations after the dust settled.
Hansen hit Hossa in the head on purpose. There is ample video evidence to show that is the case. Not even a question
That team is a bunch of douchbags that are being coached to do “whatever” it takes to win. Case in point the disallowed goal. Did anybody else notice Sedin (I don’t know which one) hitting Emery in the head IN THE CREASE? That is the play Shanahandjob should look at. They doi whatever it takes to win and they still can’t win. That is what is so pathetic about them.
Rozsival is as slow as Catfish without the ability. That guy sucked last night at all times
Kane and Sharp. Take the fucking puck wide. You are not going to win 1 on 3 in the NHL – EVER.
That Andrew Shaw is one tough minded MF.
Kesler got called for a dive. That’s all he has left. We should send him an oversized Emery glove as a think you for the point. I loved Bolland giving it to him as they sat in the penalty box.
What an organization of complete assholes. Owners, management, coaches, players, and fans, Total assholes.

    • Accipiter

      Datsyuk won a 1on 3 yesterday.
I saw that shove by one of the Things on Emery too. Ref was 2 ft. away, I was hoping someone saw it.

      • laaarmer

Neither of them is Datsyuk. Sharp doesn’t have the skill, Kane doesn’t have the size. Kane is a tunrover machine. It’s LUCKY he can make up for it with offensive skill, otherwise he’s that Russian guy with all the handskill we used to have that played for Boston too. I forget his name.

        • Accipiter

I know they aren’t Datsyuk, I was keeding.

        • Sparky_The_Barbarian

But if George Lucas ran the NHL, Dats would turn out to be Tazer’s father.

          • laaarmer

            Messier.

          • Accipiter

            Trottier.

          • laaarmer

            Tessier

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Actually, if you see the whole replay from when Dats starts off BEHIND HIS OWN NET, it’s a one on five.

        • Accipiter

Technically he got a pass from Cleary who was near the hash marks/top of the circle area.

    • Bullitt315

I see someone didn’t click the Datyuk morning link.

    • Paul the Fossil

      No argument there.

Can’t agree about Rozsival though, there are reasons that he’s plus-6 in only 6 games played this season. (After being plus-8 for the year as a top-four player for a playoff team last season.) He skates adequately, moves the puck well, knows his position and at 6’2″/210 lbs is big enough to win board battles. Many if not most NHL teams would be delighted to have that package in a 6th D and his contract is appropriate. A good pickup by Bowman.

      • laaarmer

        Roz lover!
He was horrible last night and slow. He is slow. He skates slow. Not fast. Slower than the other team. The other team is faster.

        • Z-man19

do you have a chart to go with that?

          • laaarmer

            it’s a slow process.

  • 334Rules

I hate to rag on the officiating, because it’s so Canuck-like in nature, but this crew was brutal. They couldn’t even get icing and offsides right. And the shootout goal from Kane? I mean, there was NOTHING ELSE FOR THEM TO LOOK AT and they still fucked it up. Thank God (and I swear I can’t believe I’m saying this) for Toronto.

As for Hansen. I think the number is 6.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Suffice to say they had no consistency, and therefore no control of the game.

    • ahnfire

6 ask in amount of games suspended?

It’s a phone conference, so the max is 5. Not that he’d get that, IMO. That might send a message that head hits are bad.

      • 334Rules

Thanks, Ahn. I didn’t know it was a phone-in when I posted. Just noticed it’s scheduled for this afternoon.

  • Joe Banks

    Jannik Hansen:
“We are both kind of jumping for it and he grabs the puck first and
I’m coming down and I kind of land on him a little bit and apparently I
hit him in the back of the head is what the ref is telling me”
“It’s hard for me to tell what really happened”
“It’s a hockey play and we bumped together a little hard and he goes down. I can’t really do anything about that. We both go for the puck and we ran into each other.”
“Obviously we know he got hit last year I think everybody in the hockey
world knows that,” “But it’s a hockey play and when you go
for a puck, you go for a puck.”

  • laaarmer

Let’s say Hossa cannot play for some time. What Q gonna do?
Move Sharp? Move Kane? Stalberg? Who’s gonna play in Hossa’s spot? (note that I did not say who’s gonna do what Hossa does)

    • Z-man19

yes to all of the above. I say he’ll move Kane up to 19′s line, Stals goes with Bolly and Fro replaces him on the 3rd. Question is, who comes up from the Rock.

      • laaarmer

        Bring up the Beach.

        • Z-man19

I was thinking Hayes, but I wouldn’t mind Beach getting a shot

          • 10thMountainFire

            MORIN OR PIRRI!

Now that I got my daily dose out of the way, I’m good to go.

    • 10thMountainFire

Fuck. I hate that we’re even having to answer this fucking question.

  • laaarmer

    Twitchy 2010
I’ll leave this here so ahn doesn’t moderate me.

If you had a player 1/10th the player Toews is, your coach would not know what to do with him. I think the deterioration of Kesler is a perfect example. Worst coach in the NHL. How the hell could a player who plays in the NHL respect themselves while still playing for that guy? I’ll say this too. Sedin deserved what he got from Keith. Sedin or the other Sedin (who gives a fuck which one they both are gutless) also deserves another one for his pussy cheapshot on Emery.

Twitchy – it sucks to be you. You not only like the Canucks, but you like the Canucks

  • spinOrama

I’m watching the Nucks/Stars coverage between 2nd & 3rd with non other than Mike Keenan giving commentary. They had the balls to suggest Hoss embellished. I really hate these guys.
