Get stuffed.

Never Cheer Before You Know Who’s Winning – Hawks 5, Kings 2

Our long national nightmare is over, as there is now an actual NHL hockey game in the books for us to cover, and it’s about goddamn time. And give the Hawks credit, the display they put on today is about as good as anyone could have drawn it up. Two points are two points, and the giant SAMPLE SIZE asterisk for any and all points made from here on out is attached, but even still, this was quite emphatic.

After a predictably lengthy pregame ceremony, the proceedings finally got underway after about a half hour of pomp and circumstance. An understandably rambunctious Kings squad quickly put themselves down two men, giving the Hawks a 5 on 3 for a hair over a minute. After some solid puck movement (imagine that), Patrick Kane put the Hawks on the board with a zero-angle one timer feed from Marian Hossa, whose name will be repeated ad nauseum from this point forward.

Hossa extended the lead to 2-0 less than 10 minutes later after a centering feed to a driving Jonathan Toews bounced off of the increasingly Kevin Corrigan-looking Drew Doughty and past Jonathan Quick, whose day would not get any easier after that. Less than a minute and a half later, Michael Frolik surpised everyone, most of all Jonathan Quick, with his decision to actually shoot from the slot off of a very nice pass from Marcus Kruger, who drew two defenders to himself and also drew a penalty that was negated with the Frolik score, and gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead at the end of 20.

A fourtunate bounce in the early goings of the second gave Patrick Kane a breakaway down the left wing boards, and though his backhand stuff attempt failed, Jonathan Toews was on the spot to clean up the rebound with a nice bit of patience. The rest of the second slowed down to the inevitable slop that was expected after the long layoff, and Rob Scuderi flung a shot from the point that eluded Corey Crawford, who never saw it coming.

Halfway through the third, Jordan Nolan redirected a shot past a sprawled Crawford after a scramble to bring the champs within two. But like a gangland style execution, Marian Hossa put a bullet in the brain of any hope the Kings might have had with a brilliant wrister off a rush at the top of the right circle through a defenseman’s legs and past Quick on the short side. Hawks 5, Kings 2, onward into the desert tomorrow night.

Observations

  • How much more effusive can we be about Marian Hossa’s performance this afternoon? When last we saw him he was being carted off on a stretcher, surviving Raffi Torres’ decapitation attempt. Clearly the time off did him and his legs some good, as he was everywhere today, and an absolute bull with the puck. Living well is the best revenge, and he’ll have the opportunity to put that on display tomorrow night as Torres presumably watches the game from some underground bunker where he keeps his own fecal matter in tupperware containers because he likes to keep it around.
  • Toews, Kane, and Hossa all with multi-point efforts, and the Hawks win walking away. Funny how that works.
  • Marcus Kruger also had himself a nice game, once again showing a total lack of fear (and common sense) going to the icky areas of the ice against a brutally physical Kings blue line.
  • There was some rust elsewhere though, as Patrick Sharp carred a -1 with only 3 shots on goal, and Dave Bolland was largely ineffectual as well. Both men sat around and did a shitload of nothing the last few months, and it showed at least tonight.
  • Speaking of ineffectual, did Mike Richards and Jeff Carter even play? The only time there names were even mentioned on TV was by the PA announcer during the ring ceremony.
  • High praise must be given to the play of the blueline as well, who were positionally sound, and got some surprising physicality from Nick Leddy. Niklas Hjalmarsson also showed shades of his 08-10 form, absorbing several hits to make an actual pass, rather than just firing the puck aimlessly up the wall.
  • While Sheldon Brookbank had a rough day in shielding Crow on both Kings goals, if his mere presence keeps Nick Leddy off the PK, then it’s worth it. Either way, look for Michal Rozsival to make his Hawks debut tomorrow night.
  • Crawford had a solid day, making all the saves he needed to, and can hardly be faulted for the two goals he allowed, which is all the team is really asking of him.
  • Brandon Bollig did nothing to hurt the Hawks today, but that alone doesn’t justify his presence in the lineup.
  • Sadly, it appears that TimeOnIce.com isn’t prepared for the season to start, so if we’re able to track down where we can get Corsi numbers, we’ll surely post them.
  • Bigger upset- The Hawks actually converting on a 5-on-3 power play, or Michael Frolik taking a shot from an acceptable angle? Discuss.
  • Today’s outcome shouldn’t be all that surprising given the recent history of banner raising games, and the fact that Jon Quick is coming off of surgery and Anze Kopitar didn’t play, which will surely change the complexion of things for the two times the Kings visit the UC. But it still feels good.

  • 10thMountainFire

See, what happens is that you hurt Panda and he simply grows stronger.

  • justforkicks

it makes me so happy to be reading one of these again. what a great game, despite nbc fucking things up.

    • 10thMountainFire

Has NBC ever not fucked things up?

      • justforkicks

        fair point

    • justforkicks

and gotta say, loved the 81-88, 88-19, and 19-81 play. want more of that in my eyeballs pronto. was a bit disappointed in 10 and 36 but maybe they’ll shake that off

      • 10thMountainFire

Panda is just a pure luxury to watch. If I had a child, I would make him/her watch Hossa and Toews obsessively. You can make them better hockey players simply by focusing their attention on those three-zone supermen alone.

        • justforkicks

seriously. he was everywhere, and he looked so solid and set on his feet. so great to see after what happened last year.

          • 10thMountainFire

I’d like to see Hossa get a Hart sometime during his career. As a future HoFer, he deserves to be a finalist at least once. How about this year?

          • justforkicks

            sounds good to me!

          • 10thMountainFire

Motion passes. Bill has become law.

        • activestick

If I had another child I would name him or her Marian.

          • laaarmer

            Family photo?

          • laaarmer

            picture not taking

        • birdhead

There was a call after the second Hossa goal that went something like “For all you young hockey players out there, next time you’re shooting, try throwing it through an opposing player just like that, you never know where it might go!” I laughed.

  • Tvdan

Solid effort, Hammer actually a pretty strong this afternoon…………

  • laaarmer

Can I fucking sue NBC? Fucking assholes.

    • 10thMountainFire

Is this a class-action concept? Because I’m sure we can get some on board via this thread.

      • laaarmer

I’m in for a law suit. I crapped my pants and threw up when they switched. They didn’t even announce anything. All of a sudden it was Doc and pepe.
Also, what the fuck is with the prepaid “MAGIC” mastercard ad on the right. Really? Magic is now selling prepaid Mastercards?

        • 10thMountainFire

You crapped your pants and threw up? You might want to have that looked at.

          • laaarmer

I’ll take a picture. You can look at it.

          • 10thMountainFire

God damn it I’m happy to be back talking hockey. Your post makes me happy to be alive.

          • Z-man19

I don’t think a picture is necessary, we all know what it looks like

          • Joe Banks

Personally, I hate when that happens

      • Z-man19

        I’m fucking in

Dont we have some lawyers on this site?

  • frictionjane

I think O-Don’t-ya was channeling Montador and O’Donnell today as he looked as fleet of foot as the two of them………..

    • putmeinthemadhouse

well, he WAS playing in thailand during the lockout…

  • laaarmer

Red Wings on at 8:00. I will watch. THE WHOLE GAME! Fucking assholes!

  • guest

I called it! Fro fro fro fro!

  • QCBlackhawk

Oh man, what a good start for the year. So happy to see Hossa in form, a powerplay goal, and a Frolik goal. I’d say the Frolik goal is the bigger surprise for me. My buddy and I just kind of looked at each other confused when he scored.

    • 10thMountainFire

A news outlet reports that Corey Schneider strained his groin watching the Frolik goal.

      • http://www.facebook.com/derlemke Mark Lemke

Zing. I remember that and it was quite hilarious.

  • putmeinthemadhouse

    D TOI:

    Keith: 22:44 (!!!!!)

    Hjalmarsson: 21:03

    Seabrook: 23:01

    Oduya: 21:26

    Brookbank: 12:23

    Leddy 15:37

    I like this.

    • justforkicks

hopefully it can stay that way even in a tight game

    • DesertHawk

Guess that throws out my theory of them playing Seabs and Keith for the whole game, what the the first half of the season to rest.

  • Hi, I’m Bob LeDonne

    82-0 MOTHER FUCKERS

    I LOVE YOU GUYS

    • mightymikeD

      luvvvvzzz

    • Accipiter

They must be good to win by 82.

      • Z-man19

The MOTHER FUCKERS are that good

  • Z-man19

Lots of positives here. Hossa was Hossa, the PP looked like it wanted to score not like it expected to, The Brow scored. Having said that, I think the Hawks benefitted quite a bit from an LA hangover or Quick just had a bad day. Not saying I’m not happy, just cautious.

    • 10thMountainFire

I think we may know more as Crow is tested a bit… I still think our chances of winning Lord Stanley’s finest China rely most heavily on Crow’s ability to perform at a higher level than he did last season.

      • Z-man19

I’m not sure what to make of the first goal for LA, Crow had no clue that puck was in the net. I didn’t see the second goal with NBC deciding I needed to see a different game.

        • DesertHawk

He was knocked down and struggling to get up. Brookbank was simultaneously keeping Crow down, and not clearing the net. At least that’s how I saw it.

          • Z-man19

            Just wish I saw it

          • 10thMountainFire

That makes sense… he seemed to be down forever.

        • 10thMountainFire

I was not happy with him on the second goal; he appeared to lay in the crease for years. But he may have been pinned down… I didn’t get a real good look so I’ll refrain from judging. And again, he only gave up two… that’s a great night in LA so Crow was alright.

          • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

That how I saw it – and he was barely touched IMO. Downloading the game torrent now to rewatch.

He only gave up 2, but also only saved 19. Only one game. Only one game. Only one…

  • mightymikeD

I had a dream that Hockey was back, Hossa and Toewvs were healthy and scored, Kane was a monster and the Hawks scored on the PP and had a perfect PK.. against the Champs..

Somebody pinch me (not you, Bob)

        Instant upvote.

    • 10thMountainFire

I also had this dream. I think it was something I ate.

      • mightymikeD

did you eat a Gram of Pure Victory with Excellence Chaser?

        • 10thMountainFire

I did. It was on the Hossa Menu.

          • mightymikeD

ah! the one they only show to special guests..

          • 10thMountainFire

Indeed. It might have been because I was not wearing pants.

    • DesertHawk

I gave you a flec, close enough?

      • mightymikeD

        ok for a first date..

        • DesertHawk

Never was good at the whole dating thing. Didn’t even know we were. :sigh:

          • Z-man19

I think MMD wants a second date, just trying to help

          • DesertHawk

I’ll have to make sure my wife is cool with it. Thanks for the heads up though!

          • Z-man19

I’d wait to tell her about the monkeys, that might be too much

          • DesertHawk

She knows. And the Aye-Ayes too. She’s been a lurker since I joined…

          • Z-man19

We should get to meet Mrs DH

          • DesertHawk

Well assuming that we’re in the playoffs, she’ll be home from Afghanistan in May and wants to see a game in Chicago. I’d love to meet up with you hooligans, I’m sure she’d be down as well.

          • Z-man19

This hooligan doesn’t live in Chicago but I’m all for being there for a playoff game and meeting the DH clan

          • DesertHawk

            Where’re you located Z?

          • Z-man19

Indiana, about 2 hours from Chicago

          • DesertHawk

I’m about two hours from Phoenix, hence getting to see the game tmrw. Oddly they were my second team, long before high school me got moved to Arizona, and before grown up me got stationed back in Arizona. The whole play off animosity last year sadded me greatly.

          • Z-man19

I recall that, you are probably going to see more animosity after tomorrow’s game pending the outcome.

I’ve been to Phoenix and can’t handle the heat, Flagstaff on the other hand is pretty nice.

          • DesertHawk

Yeah, the rivalry that seems to have built up is really weird. I think maybe it’s some overrun from the die hard ‘yotes fans always seeing sellout crowds when the ‘Hawks come into town. And now that the ‘Yotes are doing well again, they’re all uppity.

          • DesertHawk

Also yeah… I hate the weather out here. People are pretty chill, my previous experiences in Ga were no bueno, but I’d love to move to a cooler clime.

          • cliffkoroll

dude, way to tie it all together, like the rug in Lebowski.

  • Accipiter

Nice to see Hossa have a strong game. He should thank Doughty and Martinez for deflecting both of his shots past Quick. They don’t ask how, just how many.

    • 10thMountainFire

Deflecting Hossa’s shot into your own goal is a fucking honor in the NHL.

      • Accipiter

What about getting high sticked by the Hoss and almost losing vision in one eye ?

        • 10thMountainFire

          That’s like kissing Natalie Portman.

          • Accipiter

So that’s what Bryan Berard felt like.

  • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

Gotta imagine many would disagree, and even I wouldn’t have considered it until he got bought out, but I’d love to see the Hawks sign Scott Gomez. I mentioned it yesterday and although it was just one game, what I saw today strengthened that belief, especially if Carcillo is out for any length.

He’d be a cheap chance at catching lightning in a bottle. He’d always been one of the league’s better set up men (686 career pts, only 169 of them goals). He’s still young (33), so it’s not like signing Morrison or Brunette. Should be some gas left in the tank and the injury that caused him to miss 40 games last year was a torn bicep (he missed some more with an eye injury).

Hawks have some incredibly talented wingers and winger depth. They don’t have center depth and only Toews is a bona fide playmaker. Gomez is solid defensively (somewhere between Toews/Bolland and Kruger) and even at his worst has always driven Corsi. He can skate on either the 2nd or 3rd line. That would allow Shaw to switch back to wing (take over Carcillo’s role again?) and possibly allow Bollig to pack for Rockford. Win, win?

Word is the Sharks are offering him $700k. Hawks should offer him $1M. Lord knows they have the cap space. Alas, I know I’m pissing in the wind, but for the life of me I can’t understand why they’re not among the teams that are/were rumored to be interested. At worst, the Hawks could use him as trade fodder later in the season without giving up too many current assets.

I’m not saying Gomez would be a miracle worker, but there aren’t any other options. Fuck, Stan, you signed Brandon Fucking Slow Boat Morrison because the Hawks lacked center depth last year. What changed? Nuttin.

    • 10thMountainFire

This is very difficult to argue against. You’ve convinced me… low risk/high reward. I like it.

      • DesertHawk

CNS convinces me a lot. Either he knows more about hockey, or more about convincing… I’m not sure which.

        • 10thMountainFire

I think he runs a cult of mathematics.

    • http://twitter.com/SlakyFoot Andrew Cieslak

      He signed with the Sharks

      • 10thMountainFire

Well thanks for pissing on our party.

        Killjoy was here.

        And Gomez sucks anyways.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

I’ve yet to find any confirmation of that on the Sharks website, on NHL.com, on Yahoo! or on Twitter. They were talking yesterday but I haven’t seen a single source reporting that they actually agreed to terms…

    • Z-man19

I concur. For the price Gomez would be worth it.

  • Waylon

So what was our core’s minutes today? I’m just curious to see how Q is going to manage so many back to backs so soon.

Sigh…now a bench clearing brawl in Rockford.

But seriously… you didn’t know that his brain resides in his ass?

    • http://whatisthebestadverb.wordpress.com/ I am not Chico Maki

His knee got crunched by Doughty. If it’s the same ~CL we may already have lost him for the season. True bummer.

      • 10thMountainFire

I had oddly high expectations for him… though I hesitate to speak of him in the past tense just yet. He had good energy tonight (I know… horrible cliche) and was skating well. Shit happens. Sucks but we move on regardless.

        • http://whatisthebestadverb.wordpress.com/ I am not Chico Maki

I had the same hopes … always qualified by reminders about his brain. But he does what’s asked of him, and seemed to relish the role in the top 6. Hope he’s not hurt bad.

          • 10thMountainFire

Q was open about an extended absence. Does not look good when he hasn’t even cooled down from the game and they already know he’s damaged.

          • Z-man19

I’d say they are pretty sure he tore his knee up but will let an MRI make it official.

          • 10thMountainFire

I was thinking the same. Unfortunate.

        • Joe Banks

My god, a year away from Hockey – and his first game back… Doughty is a shit bag.

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Not sure I hold Crow faultless on the second goal. He’s got to find his skates quicker than that after getting knocked down by traffic in the crease. Other than that, a solid, if not spectacular performance by Crawdaddy. That’s all I want, especially after seeing some high prices goalies have a rougher day.

I’ll waste no superlatives on Panda, Cap’n, or Kaner. If you saw the game, you know.

Movement was much better on the PP, and while we were 1/4, only one effort could really be called clown shoes.

Stat of the day: We actually out shot an opponent in the third while protecting a lead.

Looking at the TOI, only Bollig is in single figures, so maybe Q realized his misQ. And 72 skated in the very low twenties. Nice distribution of ice time. And Phoenix is in a dog fight tonight. Can’t wait for tomorrow.

Should I be scared of the Blues or crying for the Winged Wheel? Yeah, I know it’s Scum, but they have earned my respect. Scum Jr has not.

    • Joe Banks

Kyle Clifford Cross-checked Brookbank into Crawford on that play. It appeared they got tangled up a bit. Crawford had to stay down to make a spectacular save on Clifford. The puck then bounced directly to the D man for the score.

    • nextgame

If the Hawks go 25% on the power play for the season I (actually, I think we ALL) will be ecstatic.

I’ll take 1 for 4 on the power play every day, and twice on Sunday. Oh, that’s today!

Guess that means the boys will be 2 for 8 on the PP tonight. It would be beautiful to see the dumbass Yotes take 8 penalties tonight. Would serve ‘em right.

  • justforkicks

yikes, scary night for beach, apparently a GR player was choking him and then he collapsed in the tunnel

    • DesertHawk

Any further news on that front, is he ok?

      • justforkicks

he apparently was able to then get up and walk off with the help of the trainers, but no real other news. scary shit, and i hope that GR player gets the book thrown at them

i mean when you’re eyeballs are telling you their bench is on the ice, you can’t rely on reputation to make your calls.

Hey JFK I was going to give you a GCL review right? Here’s mine: I plugged it into my TV with an HDMI cable and had a really good experience, actually a much better one than I’ve had with watching games on the Vault. The Hawks game (along with Kings’ deadly dull banner-raise) played completely smoothly, other than the flick over to Pens/Flyers – but it was pretty short, unlike lots of people I didn’t even miss a goal.

After that I went to Carolina (horrible game) which was also smooth. My internet speed is sometimes pretty bad and I really appreciated that GCL would adjust to whatever speed I could download at. This meant that once or twice I had really shitty picture – like average Totally Legitimate Stream picture – but the shift happened completely smoothly, so I didn’t miss anything, there were just brief periods where I couldn’t see the puck :P not GCL’s fault at all. However, the only way I can watch hockey at all is over the internet, so I’m always going to face this problem – if your internet connection is spotty, maybe TV would give you a more consistent picture.

Last game I watched was Anaheim-Van (SO SATISFYING). Here was when I had the only real problem I experienced; late in the first the stream cut out. I thought it was just a glitch and left it for a few minutes expecting it to come back up, but it didn’t. However, I refreshed and it picked up perfectly, and in the intermission I could come back and watch the bits I’d missed and then switch back to live really seamlessly.

So … I had a really good day. HOWEVER! I am bound to note that I have a lot of international people on my feed and some of them had real trouble:

            - One person had GCL kill her computer. She had to reboot and ended up watching the rest on streams (I think her computer might not be super up to spec, though)

            - Another friend had trouble switching streams seamlessly and had to stick to one game instead of switching over between periods like she had wanted to

            - SEVERAL people had trouble logging in. I think in all cases it was their first log-in since they’d signed up or since they’d re-upped. I had tested it the day before and set it all up an hour before games started; I don’t know if that helped, I don’t know if traffic on this very busy day was the problem, etc. They all reported getting booted back to the payment page.

            - I saw one or two people report cut-outs (not sure how many because people were also complaining about the NBC and CBC streams. Basically people complained about everything and everything broke down.)

For my money and my experience, it was a great service. On the other hand, I have literally no other options. If I were you I might stick to the Center Ice preview, at least while it’s free, and see if the problems are ongoing.

          • justforkicks

thanks so much for the details birdhead, I really appreciate it! sounds like it was great overall, but yeah, I think I will stick to the free preview and then see how it goes.

SCHNEIDER JUST GOT PULLED AND LU IS IN LOOLOLOL

    • DesertHawk

Awesome. They’ve got such a no bueno netminder situation. I hope Schneider doesn’t go the way of the Lu though.

      • justforkicks

i don’t want the nucks to ever win anything, but i’d love to see lu come back. his twitter has made me like him a lot, lol

        • 10thMountainFire

I must admit he won me over with self-effacing commentary.

        • The_FFF

I’m ashamed to admit that I find him likable too. I’d like if he got traded to some team I hate less than the ‘Nucks, which means -almost- any other team.

          • justforkicks

yeah that would probably be best

    • 10thMountainFire

Wow. Legitimate goaltender controversy in the land of fuckery and riots. Fuck em. Let them rot in it.

    • birdhead

it’s the best thing ever. my twitter feed just about laughed itself to death.

    • Joe Banks

Watched this game with my son! Great fun HNIC, great Canadian commercials, so happy hockey is back. Did Kaner mess up Schneider with that shootout goal?

    • cliffkoroll

      hilarious

I would just like to go ahead and let all Hawks fans know that they are not going to sign Ryan Getzlaf. Some idiot like Jay feaster is going to pay him 8 million a year for 7 years.

Id love to have him but theres just no way.

We’re on our way to 49-0. Or 39-10. Hell, what do I know? I’m drunk.

  • Special Agent Dale Cooper

    Hey hey everybody!!
    Glad hockey is back!!!
Good win for the Blackhawks last night, i liked the fact that no one on the blue line played too many minutes..I think Seabs played the most and KEith was about 30 seconds less than him…If Q can do this, and if the players will allow it(by the way they play) the Hawks have then a very good blue line that is very deep…I know Brookbank was the black sheep last night, but I still think he played a solid game….Better than seeing John Scott skate for a handful of minutes on your 3rd D pairing…Kruger was very good in my opinion, it seems like he has gained a step or two…I thought Leddy was more physical than I have ever seen him, and his spot right now is on the 3rd pairing, maybe in a year or two he becomes the #3 or #4 dman that everyone thinks he can be, but right now I have no problem with him out there as a 3rd d pairing….Bollig didn’t play much, only about 5-6 minutes, but the rest of the forwards played even minutes, not too big of a discrepancy if you get my drift, no John Scott to play 2min, which again helps the rest of the forwards…Frolik on the PK is good,at least for now….And I thought I heard Edzo saying that Q had the Kruger line matched up against the Richards line a lot last night, and like McClure said, didn’t hear his name much last night…way to go Frogger!!!

    • Joe Banks

Regarding Kruger line vs Richards line, no news is good news!

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

I noticed Jeff Carter maybe twice during the entire game, mind you he wasn’t doing anything productive just near the net after Crawford covered and the whistle blew, but I noticed him. Mike Richards, on the other hand, I seriously forgot that he was even on the Kings. Did not see him or hear his name called a single time

  • Hack

Frolik, dude, where the fuck did that release come from?!

For my money, that was the single most impressive shot Frolik has taken in the Indianhead. I hope there’s more where that came from.

  • BigCSouthside

Itll be awesome when Donald Fehr, CBA, Gary Bettman, NHLPA, and Lockout (x3) are no longer on that tags list on the right

  • chidiver

Another thing re observations: TOI is nice and balanced. It was a fairly sure-handed win, so that contributes to the balance, but that was sure nice to see.

Oduya/Hjammer had a healthy dose, and Leddy/Brookbank had a nice third-pairing dose, right where it should be.

  • cliffkoroll

    Great analysis Mac!

Except on this: ‘Crawford had a solid day’. Would you say you think of Jello as a ‘solid’?

Did anyone see Kaner get erased by a ref (#75) late in the first period? I laughed.

Limited sample size, but (a) the top-5 defensemen looked great, and (b) apart from goaltending, the Hawks again look like they are as good as anyone. What a pleasure to watch.

  • FattyBeef

    Hossafied

  • BigCSouthside

    anyone watching philly v buffalo?

    • Accipiter

      Yes.

    • birdhead

      Also yes.

    • justforkicks

      yes

    • 10thMountainFire

      Aye.

  • BigCSouthside

Removal of Pierre McGuire from all broadcasts should have been part of the new CBA

    • justforkicks

      oh yes

    • 10thMountainFire

I think that would have found agreement between both parties.

  • Accipiter

Enter Saadman. Can’t wait for tonights game. With Carello out Saad might get a shot of cracking the lineup (could be Mayers though).

    • justforkicks

i keep forgetting about mayer, jeez

      • 2883

Saad is what I read earlier but it was one of those… “Saad may get a chance”. I also read that Carcillos lower leg injury might be serious”

        • justforkicks

looks like it’ll def be saad and on the top line. idk, hopefully the 10-36-88 line picks up because i wasn’t to into it last night – and it’ll be nice if the tops clicking, but not if the 2nd isn’t

          • 2883

            Bolland isn’t a 2c. He just isn’t

          • justforkicks

idk i’m definitely biased because i love what he does as our 3c so much and i think he’s got great chemistry with his linemates in that role. but what do you do? idk.

          • 2883

            the Hawks can’t afford financially a real 2C… So I don’t know?

          • justforkicks

we got pretty far without a real 2c before. though tbh, i’ve never been as into the 10-88 chemistry others have had, unless toews is the center. i don’t mind if kaner because 2c again either, as long as its consistent and hossa is his winger

          • 2883

It’s nice to have two complete lines.

          • justforkicks

            hah well yeah

          • birdhead

equally though it would be nice if lines got a reasonably steady start for a few games instead of going straight into Q’s blender, right?

          • justforkicks

yeah, would definitely be nice, but i keep feeling like in a 48 game season, we don’t have much time to let things develop on their own, may have to go with what works, just in some ways. e.g. a player or two swap between lines 1 and 2

    • 10thMountainFire

      I really like Jamal Mayers.

I have nothing further to add. I simply wanted to express my affinity for an under-appreciated member of our squad.

  • RLWiener

Tip of the cap to you guys and Sheffield’s. Good beer and good food.

  • 2883

caught the game last afternoon at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Peoria. There was a small Blackhawks contingent. I then watched the Rivermen lose 8-4 to the Stars. A fun day.

  • Accipiter

Apparently Bobby Lu is getting the nod to start against the Oilers. Oh the drama.

    • 10thMountainFire

He better not get in my face. Cause I’ll drop that motherfucker.

      • Accipiter

I’m not going to call him Dad.

Not even if there’s a fire!

          • Accipiter

I swear, I’m so pissed off at my mom. As soon as she’s of age, I’m putting her in a home.

        • BigCSouthside

It was Johnny Hopkins, and Sloan Ketering. And they we’re blazin that shit every day.

          • Accipiter

You dont know anyone named Johnny Hopkins.

    • stacie7

I would’t read too much into it. I read that since it was a back to back they were already planning on starting him today.

      • Accipiter

I’m not really reading into it. I just find it amusing that it gets so much attention.

  • 2883

    Vanek looks like a monster

    • Accipiter

He is European, give him a break.

  • justforkicks

noticed a few guys slowing down on the shootout yesterday! if i remember correctly, none of them actually went through though

  • justforkicks

also about tonight – looks like emery is the starter, saad will be in (in carcillo’s spot), and it was carcillo’s mcl and he’ll be out a month. according to twitter

    • 2883

      yeah that;s not good.

  • BigCSouthside

since when do they not review that?

    • justforkicks

i missed it – what were they reviewing?

      • BigCSouthside

Puck trickled across the goal line, and whistle blown at the same time.

        • 2883

          Intent to blow

          • justforkicks

ah ok. i hate that fricking rule

    • birdhead

I think they did review it. BRUTAL call for the Flyers, ouch.

      • 2883

was the right call on the ice, the wrong call to blow your whistle

  • justforkicks

    flyers are now 0-2

    • 2883

they can go 0-49 for all I care

      • justforkicks

haha fair enough. i’d rather have the pens losing though i think

  • barnum22

    emery is starting tonight?

    • 2883

      thats the rumor

      • 10thMountainFire

    • 10thMountainFire

      I feel you, brother.

    • http://whatisthebestadverb.wordpress.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Do you watch on gamecentre, mmd? I’m thinking I might cave and buy. I can’t believe the difference in quality between it and my usual pirated feeds. I promised myself I wouldn’t spend a dime this year, and already one game in and I’m showing the will power of an 80-year0old hoarder.

      • Accipiter

How did you end up getting the free trial ???

        • http://whatisthebestadverb.wordpress.com/ I am not Chico Maki

I didn’t. It fucking ends after about 2 or 3 minutes of broadcast. But the picture was so crystal clear, almost as good as tv. The internet connection was bumpy here and there, but that’s me, not the feed.

I’m seriously so fucknig angry that it wasn’t a free trial, they’re a bunch of sorry pricks. Still, like I say, hoarder.

      • mightymikeD

I’ll be on my usual “Completely Legitimate (ahaaar, Jim, Lad) feed but now that there’s a season I think I’ll look at Gamecentre. The internet speeds here are so much faster than where I lived in Ireland so it’ll be worth it.

        • http://whatisthebestadverb.wordpress.com/ I am not Chico Maki

It’s like Bettmann has his hands on my balls and I can’t even smack him away; all I can think to say is, Please squeeze as hard as you can.

          • Accipiter

That is dirty. You may need some help.

        • birdhead

I was reading there’s a weird situation with UK blackouts this year so check it maybe, but it’s been awesome for me. And it’s cheap as chips this year, too.

    • BigCSouthside

      Keep drinking, youll be fine

  • BigCSouthside

Question of the night. Do I get smashed for this game, since I dont have to go to the corporate sweatshop tomorrow, or do I remain sober and act like an adult? If I do get smashed, do I go liquor or beer? These are the questions of our time.

    • mightymikeD

liqour AND beer… that was easy. I should do this professionally.

      • BigCSouthside

I thought it was a profession in Ireland

  • Accipiter

Did else notice that Kaner was without his mouthguard yesterday ? I noticed it on his goal, but had a bad internet connection and didn’t see the game in it’s entirety.

    • mightymikeD

he finally chewed it to the size of a pea..

    • justforkicks

huh didn’t notice until you said it and i looked at some gifs. maybe he decided since he barely keeps it in his mouth anyway, why bother?

      • Accipiter

I was thinking it might be bothersome because of the cut above his lip, but you could be right.

        • justforkicks

oh that makes sense too, haha.
