Maybe Calgary would take Versteeg if we threw in the rights to Kevin Hayes (who is rumored to want to be re-united there with his BC linemates). If we get a second or third in return (we will get the 54th pick as compensation if Hayes does not sign with us) it would net out for us as straight salary dump, but that doesn’t break any rules. Versteeg is from Alberta too, so there is the hometown angle.

    • Andrew Heitman

I am fully expecting Uncle Dale to take on Steeger…again…again….

    • Annette Frontpresence

Hayes + Versteeg for a 2nd and a 5th would be nice. But Steeg is the opposite of the type of player they want in Calgary… maybe they would bite the bullet for the sake of getting Hayes.

      • jordyhawk

That’s what I’m thinking (hoping). They could use scoring as well and Versteeg (when he’s not turning it over) can find the net.

    • The Other One

Hawks will get a 2nd automatically if Hayes doesn’t sign with them (from the Draft Fairies – not from the team that signs him). Calgary would really have no incentive to do this because they can sign him for free in August, unless some of that “stupid” they have from the Bollig trade is still lingering around.

      • jordyhawk

It would give them exclusive rights to Hayes prior to August 15th so they might be able to lock him up before he goes on open market. It really depends on what Hayes intends to do with his pending free agency.

        • The Other One

Yea, there is that. I think that they’ll “talk” to him in other ways (like via his buddies in Cowtown already) without giving up any assets. Then again, it is Brian Burke

  • SuperHawk27

    From the first link:

“But the fact is, the big moves around them are all responses
to what the Hawks and Los Angeles Kings have built and accomplished
over the past five seasons. For them, it’s not about changing. It’s
    about maintaining.”

Damn right. Of all the free agents signed, I wouldn’t replace anyone on the hawks roster. Not with a hard cap….

    • Andrew Heitman

I still would have been a little squealy girl if Stastny had signed with the Hawks….

      • SuperHawk27

It would have been nice, but who leaves to make room for him?

        • Andrew Heitman

Its a total daydream, and I think Stan made the right decision.

A Sharp trade? I dont know if you can move your leading scorer…but now would be as good a time as any to do so….

          • SuperHawk27

Sharp still has 3 years left on his deal @ 5.9 mil….I wouldn’t trade him until the last year for prospects unless someone offers a trade that cannot be passed up before then.

          • Andrew Heitman

            @superhawk27:disqus I guess you can…

We are over the cap now, someone is getting moved. It makes sense to move a guy at his peak (probable..) for something needed. Center depth was addressed…sorta…so Im not sure how the hawks are going to clear the space they need.

          • SuperHawk27

            @andrewheitman:disqus
Cool! We can tag people now??

  • MySpoonIsTooBig

The Stars got better, the Wild got better, Scum Jr. got better, and the Ducks got better yesterday. On the flipside, the Avs got demonstrably worse. I’m going to laugh my ass of when Iginla can’t keep up with his speedy teammates and his 3-year contract with a $5.33M cap hit and full NMC becomes a lead weight around the Avs’ neck

    • Andrew Heitman

The Avs got so much older. They took their one real tangible asset (youth) and threw it into the shitter. Watching that unfold was like a car wreck in slow motion.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

Their inability to re-sign Stastny was pretty funny. The trade in which they sent Paranteau and a pick to Montreal for Briere was downright hilarious.

        • Andrew Heitman

There is a distinct possibility they moved from the top of the division last year (comically) to out of the playoffs this year. I cant wait to see the French Canadian Meltdown around mid March…

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

I would absolutely love to see that unbalanced pyscho go from an (entirely undeserved) Jack Adams to out on his ass in less than a year’s time…

          • DJ

I’d think the GM in charge of this dismantling would go first, unless Roy was in on it as well. Then you’d have a two-fer…

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

Remember, Roy isn’t just the HC he’s the VP of hockey operations and together with Sakic has final say on the roster.

          • birdhead

I think they could have retained their entire roster and still missed the playoffs this year though.

        • The Other One

I wasn’t really their “inability to sign Stasny”, it was their conscious decision not to resign Stasny due to some stupid self-inflicted contract value cap because Duchene is only making $6MM per year and everyone needs to be below that. Yea, good luck with that!

          Idiots…

      • The Other One

Everything that the Avs did last year that was considered “smart” has just unraveled.

    • guesthouse

While upgrading offensively, I still think those teams all have issues in their own zone.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

I don’t disagree with you about that at all (except for with Scum Jr, they’re pretty tight defensively). I still think the ‘Hawks can / should beat all of them, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they all improved.

        • guesthouse

Blues are fine on D, but that goaltending situation is really questionable.

  • The Nutbrown Hare

It may be petty and too easy of a target at this point, but the consternation Canuck fans are presently suffering (reference the comments section of the Ryan Miller article for their latest blast of belly-aching) certainly warms the cockles of my heart…

    • jordyhawk

The joy of the many (the rest of the hockey world) at the expense of the few (Canucks fans) cannot ever be a bad thing. Don’t judge yourself too harshly.

      • The Nutbrown Hare

Ah, thank you, good sir. My conscience feels clear once again!

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Just let the winner of the central play the Kings for the Cup.

    • The Nutbrown Hare

Seriously. What legit contender in the East actually made any significant improvements to their roster yesterday? Boston still seems to be the most complete team, but even they suffered a fairly significant loss (Iginla) as a result of their own version of cap hell.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

Tampa Bay. They hit the 100 point plateau last year despite being without Stamkos for 3 months, would have likely trounced Montreal in the 1st round had Bishop not gone down, and definitely improved with the additions of Jason Garrison, Brian Boyle, and Anton Stralman, as well as Evgeni Nabokov to backup Bishop in place of Lindback, plus they’ve also got last year’s #2 overall pick Jonathan Drouin ready to be inserted into the lineup. I think they might end up being the team to beat in the east

        • The Nutbrown Hare

You know, I actually did think about them immediately after posting…I think I’ve always just had a tendency to dismiss/dislike all of the Nascar Nation teams (TB, FLA, CAR, N’VILLE) no matter what their rosters look like. My active provincial attitude always precludes me from giving them much respect. I really need to stop that, I guess.

        • YoAdrienne

They’re going to be trouble. If not this year, then in the not so distant future.

  • Joe Banks

Could they deign to deny us the Dane?

    • YoAdrienne

I’m glad he’s sticking around for another year. I’m curious to see what he’ll do with an actual training camp under his belt, rather then just getting tossed in during the middle of the season, not ever having played with his new teammates.

      • pepe_silvia

And even despite all that he wrecked people on that line with Bicks and Morin late in the year.

        • YoAdrienne

Yep. I hope Q puts that line back together to see that sort of thing is sustainable.

  • pepe_silvia

My thoughts on the Blues: Do they still have Oshie? Reaves? Jackman? Steen? Backes is still their captain? Okay then, not worried.

    • YoAdrienne

I think that’s a “yes” to all. They’re also a little lacking in the goaltending department, as I understand it. I’m not worried, either.

      • QCBlackhawk

Still went to game 7. Not super worried, but I wouldn’t write them off.

        • pepe_silvia

It only went to 6 games.

          • YoAdrienne

Yep. The Hawks only lost the first two games of that series.

          • QCBlackhawk

whoops. Forgot we didn’t have home ice. Gross.

          • pepe_silvia

Yeah, let’s get on that this year.

          • QCBlackhawk

For all the good it did us with LA. /notbitter’d

Giroux arrested for copping a feel, or should that read, Feeling a Cop?

  • The Other One

One day in – I’m liking the B-Rich deal more and more

    • Andrew Heitman

Agree. 51 points between grinders…no pressure to be #1, no pressure to lead the team in points, surrounding cast….hes gotta love this. He got paid by NY so hes still getting his 20 mil roundabouts.

  • Andrew Heitman

Just brought in a plug from Sweden…interesting.
