Reading the various articles, it’s Interesting how AMAZING Scum has become after beating the Hawks on Saturday. I know they knocked off a 2-seed in the Ducks (a one-line team with questionable defensive schemes). And I know they dominated the Hawks at the UC for one game. But it’s ONE GAME! Now they apparently have the greatest “kids” in the league on their team and Zetterberg is Lidstrom if Lids played at forward. Oh, and the Hawks aren’t big enough to get through the playoffs. Geez. Did Scum win the Cup on Saturday and I missed it?

    • Z-man19

Let it be the fuel that feeds the fire

    • putmeinthemadhouse

Apparently wednesday didn’t happen if you wrote these articles. Wings fans are also at an all time untolerable. Would love to see the hawks shut em up tonight.

    • mazer_rackham

The hawks were flat and the wings were carbonated. So very carbonated…

      • bizarrohairhelmet

Looked like they were also contoured, as opposed to the linear Hawks.

    • BigCSouthside

I read some shit about the wings finally “finding their identity”. Arent a bunch of these fuckers old enough to collect social security? They havnt found their identity yet? They are the fucking Redwings. They have had the same fucking “identity” for over a 20 years.

      • Accipiter

        This is their secret identity.

    • Rich Westerman

Its all about the narrative, Preacher. The narrative must change from game to game or somebody’s editor might not be impressed. Get with the program, brother.

  • Andrew Heitman

That Herald article is just awful…

    • DesertHawk

      Agreed… I don’t really care about hockey, but here’s what I think… at least that’s how I interpreted it.

    • http://whatisthebestadverb.wordpress.com/ I am not Chico Maki

      Awful.

    • Andrew Heitman

Basically- it was, dont care about things cause even though Chicago sports teams have been succesful in the past, they havent been so successful that we should get used to it. Or some inane drivel like that. Talk about emo hipster bullshit writing. Are we sure this wasnt written by Chuck Fucking Klosterman?

    • Rich Westerman

This was his submission to the Iowa Writer’s Workshop. They weren’t impressed either.

  • HawkIPA

After every big loss this season, the Hawks have responded and righted the ship. I don’t expect any different tonight. I think the 1st line is going break through in a big way, and the 3rd line will be back to its torching self. Kicking Handzus off the 2nd line will increase the pressure in the Detroit zone and generate a more sustained presence. I predict multi-point games for Toews and Saad, and for Bickell to make some noise.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

Uh. Not really. After the first big loss (the first regulation loss), they lost the next one to the powerhouses in Edmonton. And then they muscled out a SO win over the BJ juggernauts. They won the next two against solid-if-you’re-mothers-of-the-players Stars and Avs, but then lost the next two to playoff teams.

  • Country_Bumpkin

In comparing Game 1 and Game 2, Detroit played with more aggressiveness and I guess “want to”, but how does one explain the Hawks lack of interest or lack of execution from one game to the next? I could expect a slight drop from game to game but Saturday’s game was really unsettling to me. As HawkIPA said, they Hawks do respond after big losses and that’s what I hope for tonight.

    • Andrew Heitman

I think they get lulled into a sense of accomplishment, they were so dominant on Wednesday and they havent really had to compete hard yet this playoffs- I expect a different team tonight.

      • cliffkoroll

I wonder what the talk at the first intermission was. Hawks were up 1-0 on a tic-tac-toe beauty despite being outplayed. Maybe a bit too much “we got this” and not enough “step on their throats.”

As healthy and rested as this team is, I found the performance Saturday baffling- very uncharacteristic.

        • mightymikeD

I agree, cliff.. after that 1st perioid I was happly thinking “Here We Go”.. and then it all went swirling down the pan.. very odd.

  • putmeinthemadhouse

New disqus mobile is pretty nifty. So handzus sits, stals returns…does that mean carcillo is still in the lineup…?

    • Andrew Heitman

Give me a 4th line of Morin-Kruger-Frolik and run em down.

      • MattC86

Coincidence that Morin played (and scored) during the Easter Funday Beatdown of Scum in March? I THINK NOT.

With a dumb penalty on Saturday, I really don’t know what it is Q thinks he’s getting from Gorilla Salad. Hockeenight said it best, “4 minutes of sandpaper and falling down like a goof.” By playing him so little, he shows he knows that GS isn’t worth a turd, yet rather than put in somebody useful, he keeps it up. A Smith-Kruger-Frolik fourth line (or Smith-Shaw-Frolik) would outwork any 3rd or 4th line left in the playoffs.

        • justforkicks

I’ve heard it all – he has chemistry with the 4th line! He’s a deterrent! He brings the intimidation factor! Blah blah blah. He has done some good things but we have better options and I really hope we start seeing them.

          • Waylon

Funny thing about Carcillo, he’s basically the same player we saw in the finals vs. Philly. Guy gets on the ice for a few minutes, runs around trying to hit someone like a human pinball, takes a dumb penalty, then is not seen again for the rest of the game.

          • no clever title

which is why I’m so baffled by him being in the lineup…keeps feeling like Q’s trying to turn him into the next Rudy.

          • Waylon

Q must have a need to feed his inner meathead from time to time, just wish he could get that out of his system during the regular season, and shelve it in the playoffs.

        • Andrew Heitman

I really like the third line of Bicks-Shaw-Stalberg- thats energy line with purpose. Not GS running into things. We dont need to thump around this series- we need to fly up and down the wings and crash the net.

    • ahnfire

is he sitting or just not practicing? Hasn’t BenSmith! been filling in for him at the last few practices anyway?

      • justforkicks

Smith has been filling in for him but last practice Bolly was there which makes me think Bolly and the Patrick’s are our 2nd line tonight. I’d rather Zus drop to the 4th then him sit for carcillo

      • putmeinthemadhouse

I drew a conclusion myself, I am lrobably wrong.

        • Accipiter

You don’t draw conclusions, you jump to them.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            and then draw ire.

    • justforkicks

Can’t read the articles – handzus is sitting? I assumed he’d drop to the 4th for carcillo. Do you mean because he didn’t practice because that’s happened a few times already

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

Is Zus sitting? I could be mistaken, but I thought that Tracey Myers tweeted yesterday that even though he wasn’t at practice Q said he was going to play tonight?

  • trois murs

Why is it so rare for fans to think “it’s only one game” or “we can’t sweep every series.” This sky-is-falling mentality is fucking annoying. As we’ve seen in every playoffs since the dawn of time, you can never be comfortable even with a 3 game lead, or a 3 goal lead in the third period of game 7 for that matter. I know media capitalizes on this for $, but they only do so because people already have the inclination to think that way.

Hell, the 2010 cup win was filled with good and bad times in nearly every series, so we should be used to this already.

    Bah Humbug

    • ahnfire

I think it’s more that the people who fall under that mentality don’t tend to immediately comment on all & every message board, as opposed to the “sky-is-falling” crowd. The “it’s only one game/we can’t sweep every series” crowd mostly seem to go about their day and distract themselves in other ways after a loss.

      • ballyb11

        Worried.

        • Accipiter

          *worryd.

        • ahnfire

aren’t you vacationing in florida or something?

          go worry outside.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            with the sharks

          • ballyb11

Just got back from golfing. Couldn’t concentrate. Standing overthe ball. Worry, Worry, Worry.

      • this

^this…I think you nailed it on the head. I have friends who are more recent hockey converts, and it’s a lot of teeth-gnashing after each and every loss. I do precisely what you mentioned, just find something else to kill time until the next game…thank goodness it’s today

  • BigCSouthside

Some things I expect to see tonight

Jonathan Toews pissed off. This is bad news for anyone not in an Indianhead
Patrick Kane fuck you black magic mode. He seemed rather unhappy with last game. 2013 Kaner does not let that shit go quietly
Stalberg will skate like his hair is on fire

Stay the fuck out of the box and challenge these old bastards when they are carrying the puck.

    • MattC86

I will say I’m not sold that Stalberg’s attitude is going to be a blazingly awesome “Fuck You Mode,” but that’s just based on press coverage. Obviously, I have no real basis for that.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

I’m not sure that Stalberg really h as a “fuck you” mode, but I think it’s reasonable to think that he’ll be playing harder than we’ve ever seen him play before. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be better, he could play hard but make a bunch of dumbass mistakes, but after having to watch games 1 and 2 from the press box he’s gonna come out with everything he’s got to ensure he doesn’t end up right back there.

    • mightymikeD

      amen, brother

  • justforkicks

I’d be shocked if the hawks didn’t come out like they did Game 1, and when that happens they’ll be unstoppable. I’m hoping Toews breaks through tonight as well and is the difference maker we know he can be.

    • Accipiter

They came out quite well in G2. I’m hoping they play 60 minutes.

      • justforkicks

They couldn’t sustain it and then it turned into a damned. Hoping for more consistent work today

  • Eddie_The_Eagle50

I love playoff hockey but I really don’t like how it has devolved into clutching and grabbing these last few years. Even the winged wheel was using that defensive strategy on Saturday. What happened to calling interference more often this year? Oh that’s right, the playoffs are here and the refs swallow their whistles for fear they might decide the outcome of a game by actually doing their jobs. Sorry if I sound like a whiner but I had to get that out.

    • Accipiter

Clutching and grabbing in playoff hockey developing in the last few years ? It has been around longer than that.

      • Eddie_The_Eagle50

Maybe I’ve just noticed it more the last few years. Or maybe because the last two cup champions excelled at mauling teams. Like I said I just needed to be a meathead and vent.

    • justforkicks

Man if they don’t want to decide the outcome of they game they should just be really really really sure why they call in OT or the final minutes is legit

    • roadhog

The interference calls on the dump and chase plays are practically non-existant compared to the regular season. While they aren’t full on holds, the D men (esp. Pens and Kings) are putting their hands in the chest of the guy dumping the puck and their partner is turning and chasing with an advantage. This stuff was called pretty tight during the regular season. It may seem small, but it’s changing the overall flow of the game IMO.

  • no clever title

Hoping for some good intensity from the boys tonight. From the Herald article, doesn’t sound too much like Stals learned whatever it was he was supposed to learn, buthopefully that just turns into him making a point out there. As for the rest, I’m with the general consensus that toews and kane come out in f u mode and keep the wings locked in their zone.

    • no clever title

      sorry trib article, not herald

    • http://twitter.com/neo873 Neo

This is my only beef with what Q did. If you are going to publicly humiliate players to get better performances, you better “pick on” guys that can take the public humiliation. Saad was an example of somebody that knew how to handle the publicity; Stalberg was NOT. You either deal with him privately or you get rid of him.

      • no clever title

I don’t even mind shaming a player if they deserve it…if they can’t handle it too bad…but it’s a game of chicken…if you give and they haven’t learned anything, what was the point of it all? If you don’t think a player is giving their all, you have an entire squad from rockhalla chomping at the bit to be given a chance at the big stage. All of whom can skate better than at least bollig and carbomb(except maybe hayes)

      • DesertHawk

A beef I had with it was that players were asking reporters what Stals had done, that’s an issue. If the team doesn’t even know why a guy is being punished, I feel like that’s a quick way to lose the room.

  • trois murs

Regarding the Puck Daddy article on player fines for ref talk: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/learned-complaining-nhl-officiating-time-fine-sore-losers-115517840.html

I agree completely with the article, especially on how it’s embarrassing to even see/hear them complain. Plays go uncalled in every game, every series, for both teams. I can understand the emotion behind just losing a game, but rarely are the refs the entire reason for the teams loss and the post-game “strategy” of calling out refs for improved calls next game is even more embarrassing.

    • mightymikeD

it’s one of the more nauseating things about the bloated carcass that the Premier League has become: the constant mewling and puking about referees from managers like Alex Ferguson, Sam Allardyce and worthless-asshole Neil Warnock, coupled with halfwit players who are allowed to scream in the faces of officials and jostle them on the pitch. Heavy fines, zero tolerance. There are channels iavailable for those unhappy with officiating.

      • trois murs

I thought Doug Wilson’s release regarding raffi torres’ suspension was both appropriate and well-backed by reality while not being a complete embarrassment, and yet he gets a $100K fine(25% being automatic for within 2 days of the ruling). Meanwhile players are only fined in the most egregious cases(Quick) and left to consider their actions appropriate or warranted without punishment. Other than carefully crafted statements towards the dept. of player safety(which has made absolutely horrible inconsistent decisions for years), they should be fining large amounts in order to curb this behavior, especially when it is a statement directed at the refs of a game, during or afterwards.

        • MySpoonIsTooBig

Completely agree with you. I thought Doug Wilson’s $100k fine was completely ludicrous, at least as ludicrous as Quick’s laughable $200 fine for berating the refs.

          • mightymikeD

the disparity is ludicrous, alright. But I’m 100% behind suspensions and points deductions for this sort of thing, so I may be.. ahh.. a bit of an extremist.

  • MySpoonIsTooBig

    Some good news!
@MarkLazerus Carcillo still out on the ice, while Handzus came off at the normal time. Usually, that indicates Carcillo is the scratch, not Handzus

    followed a minute later by:
@NHLBlackhawks Handzus was not on a line at the skate, but Coach Q says “he’s playing.” Stalberg will be back in the lineup as well. #Blackhawks

  • BigCSouthside

God dammit 5 fucking hours to puck drop. Im back in the states for this one, so its beer, grilling, buffalo chicken dip, and hockey for me tonight

    • ahnfire

in the states? where have you been?

      • DesertHawk

Not in the States would be my guess.

        • bizarrohairhelmet

Nevada han’t got much states in it.

      • BigCSouthside

I was in Grand Cayman for a while. I was able to watch hockey there, but my bar tabs…..were slightly ridiculous. It will be nice to sit at home, grill some brats, drink cheap american beer, and wear my Hawks sweater

        • ahnfire

so that’s why you haven’t been around! I thought it was med school.
