Stop it with the Morin photos. You’re only going to break my heart.

    • jordyhawk

Morin drawing more than local attention. Check out TSN comments in this week’s power rankings:

        Surprised Hawks higher than Colorado.

        • 10thMountainFire

          Surprised, disappointed, or worry’d?

          • ballyb11

            Surprised.

      • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

        Also from that article:

It’s at least a little amusing to see former Blackhawks farmhands Brandon Pirri and Jimmy Hayes leading the Panthers in scoring since the Olympic break. Different opportunities for very different teams.

Is Dale Talon still the Wonder Child?

        • jordyhawk

Good for them. Wish them the best, but Pirri in particular is not equipped for the grind (nor the high tempo game), and I think him moving on was the best thing for all parties.

          • zacked

The certainty with which you state this is boggling.

          • jordyhawk

It’s my opinion of his play. What’s yours?

          • zacked

I don’t really have a problem with your comment in particular, but I’ve heard this over and over again, acting like what we saw in 28 games is his complete development. The kid is only 22, and all of 35 games in the NHL in his career, he could still develop in a number of ways.

I’m fine with them moving him given the team needs, his contract situation and his need to move up, but we shouldn’t act like he is going to be what he is now forever.

          • Waylon

plus he made it clear that if they weren’t going to play him with the big club, he’d rather they trade him – I think it speaks well to the Hawks organizations’ overall perception in the hockey community at large. They try to treat their players fairly, whether or not they stick with the team long – term.

          • lizmcneill

That could be a factor as well in kids like Carey (and even Johns who could have waited out the Hawks’ rights to him) signing with the org.

          • jordyhawk

Hopefully Hayes will feel this way and sign after Frozen Four this weekend.

          • lizmcneill

I think Block said that, yeah.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

I’m guessing you’d want to see some progression out of him like you see in successful kids like Saad, Shaw, Kruger, etc. Those are all guys of similar (or younger) age who have at this point proved they belong in the NHL and on the Hawks. Late bloomers are pretty rare and maybe to a fault. But…would Stan wait 8 more years for Pirri to turn into the next Steen? Will Steen have any more years at twice his average points production?

Pirri has 1 more point on the 3rd line in Florida in 100+ LESS minutes (252) than he had here (355) where he often skated with Kane. I’d bet the pressure here was more than he was comfortable with and also that he will not continue to produce at his current rate in Florida.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Also, Florida has nicer weather.

It’s good to keep Tallon turned up sweet for when we need to dump giant contracts or acquire Froliks.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Heh.

        • Paul the Fossil

That is encouraging for Florida but we have to keep in mind how little takes to lead that team in scoring: their individual leader for the season as a whole has only 36 points total. Hayes has 17 points in 50 games, Pirri 12 points in 18 games. (And they have matching shooting percentages of 15.)

Dylan Olsen meanwhile has 12 points in 41 games from the blueline.

          • Paul the Fossil

Just read that the Panthers are actually threatening to set a new NHL record: the previous low in an 82-game season for an individual team leader is 39 points.

      • 10thMountainFire

        Aaaaand he’s gone.

    • raditzzzz

      yea, but can he fight?

      • 10thMountainFire

        Actually…

  • Shooter

I know it’ll never happen, but I chuckled at the thought of having Kane and Kane on the same line.

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

At this point he’s locker room poison. I wouldn’t want him even if Peg paid half his salary.

      • Shooter

but the vike’s picked up josh freeman after having that same label…it worked for them didn’t it?

        • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

It is possible for a guy like that to turn it around, but it’s a much less risky gamble for a team like the Vikings that it is for a legit contender.

          • 10thMountainFire

I used to root for the Rangers. Mostly because of Kinsler and Young. Now? Meh.

          • Shooter

Before we get booted for talking about other sports, I gotta hand it to the cubbies, after June I don’t have to worry about watching baseball until next year.

          • 10thMountainFire

Solid. The Sox will be exciting to watch at times but they’ll likely be done by June as well.

      • zacked

I won’t absolve Kane of responsibility, but this situation was made by the asinine reactions of the team and the ‘peg media to his minor transgressions.

      • Paul the Fossil

Anything’s possible of course but I haven’t seen any actual evidence for that idea.

        • neo1978

Pretty well known that Andrew Ladd was in the Jake Dowell camp concerning Patrick Kane. Can’t see how he would mellow now that he is a captain and dealing with the other flamboyant Kane.

          • 10thMountainFire

Can you explain that a bit? I missed the reference.

          • neo1978

Jake Dowell was sat a couple of games for insubordination. He ripped Kane on the bench in a game for lack of effort. Ladd was rumored to be a pretty strong member of that camp. So I can’t see him being all that happy with the other Kane who has a similar reputation.

          • 10thMountainFire

I love Ladd but that sounds a bit earnest on his part. The other side of the tough personality Captain type. It makes sense now.

            Thanks.

    • lizmcneill

I think they’re both nicknamed Kaner, as well. Just too confusing.

      • Shooter

Would pay good money to see foley try to handle that one..And throw Sharp on that line, so you have patrick, patrick kane, kane

      • 10thMountainFire

They’re both known for being lazy.

        • Bullitt315

This is my problem with (e)kane. All the reporting I’ve seen on him makes him look like a lazy a-hole but all the reporting on (p)kane made him look like a lazy a-hole and he certainly wasn’t. (p)kane never seemed to have problems with management. Basically, I don’t trust the press.

          • bigtreina

could be dead nuts wrong on this – but taking a chance on (e)Kane as a replacement for an injury prone (b)Bickell might be worth a shot. I’m sure salary restrictions will nix this idea.

          • lizmcneill

EKane would be more the long-term replacement for Sharpy (but more physical). He scored 30 goals at age 20 and he’s 22 now. But he could certainly replace Bicks short-term for about 1.5M more.

          • Paul the Fossil

It seems worth exploring though, all things considered. I hope Stan at least puts in a call to give Winnipeg’s expectations the laugh test.

          • 10thMountainFire

Six million+? Lose Saad and Leddy. No thanks.

  • bigtreina

Loved the deadspin article CI tweeted yesterday. Even though I know deadspin is mostly crap. A team’s advanced hockey metrics do seem to coordinate with team performance. We say the Hawks are a possession team, and the metrics support that. I’m no expert on metrics – but methinks if you are good at hockey, you’re going to have high scores for things like possession, shots, team shooting %, etc. How the boneheads in Toronto (and those in the Hawks broadcasting booth) refuse to acknowledge this is downright funny.

    The article: http://deadspin.com/the-maple-leafs-collapse-is-a-victory-for-rationality-1559848856

    • 10thMountainFire

No, you were correct the first time. Deadspin is garbage.

      • raditzzzz

i don’t much delve into the advanced metrics until i see what gets posted on game wraps here the next morning. i’m curious, do any of these producers have real time stat updates, or is it a wait for the end/compile situation?

        • VerStig

I’m not sure but it’s possible the timeonice stats will update in-game if they’re just parsing the stat sheets on nhl.com, which I think is what they do.

        • Flipper76

I’m pretty sure the timeonice site does in-game updating…if memory serves I’ve gone over there a few times during the game.

        • 10thMountainFire

Wait and compile, I believe. The advanced metrics is a much more time-consuming issue. I know when bird does the magic math thing it takes a tremendous amount of time.

          • raditzzzz

too bad, that sounds like it could be a really fun mobile application. something i might consider augmenting my game watching if there was anything good created. you know, hangin out watching, and then glancing down at my phone as charts/stats update.

as it is, i am too drunk and apathetic to be typing out stuff on the game day threads like the rest of you.

          • VerStig

Well… I could try expanding that Corsi ticker I had to something a little bit more significant. I’d probably start with a mobile website rather than an app though — this stuff takes way too much time to put together…

          • raditzzzz

yeah, time is tight these days. i started to write a fan post about the overdrive blade for a few people here. that was like over a year ago.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

looks like some nhl tenders use the overdrive. looks like it gives you an extra 10-15 degrees of support?

          • raditzzzz

            * used. yep, i had some pics of nhl goalies wearing them. i’ll have to post them.

          • birdhead

extraskater’s in-game fenwick chart is really good for that kind of thing.

          • raditzzzz

i’ll keep that in mind and give it a look next game.

        • lizmcneill

extraskater updates within game but it can be flaky/laggy. Jen (regressedPDO on twitter) will sometimes tweet out the Fenwick chart in intermissions.

    • Waylon

I appreciate the effort, but I will not give that site a click from my browser. Trying to find anything worthwhile there is like the proverbial story of a guy digging through piles and piles of shit, because he just knows that there’s a pony in there somewhere.

      • zacked

        DIG FOR PONIES

      • bigtreina

Mind you, I only went there because TCI tweeted the link yesterday. Otherwise, I don’t visit the site.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

This article reads like a big celebratory told-you-so masturbation for stat geeks given that there’s no way that the stats referenced predict anything other than marginal probability. Wake me when someone bets big on the same probability and fails. I’ll be interested to see the back-pedaling and blamethrowers.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

I was thinking of the article Birdhead linked yesterday. This one is not quite as bad, but still want to see the parade before the emperor has no clothes alarm is sounded.

        • VerStig

Well, you really can’t prove anything with probabilities (or stats, for that matter). Even if something has a 90% chance of happening, if you get the 1 time out of 10 that you were wrong, are you going to say that 90% was the wrong probability?

          • bizarrohairhelmet

No, but right now they’re at 50% so I wouldn’t bet the farm or even journalistic integrity just yet.

          • lizmcneill

Toronto? 2% chance of playoffs right now.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Toronto collapsing last year and Toronto collapsing this year.

          • lizmcneill

I remember Toronto collapsing last year, too. It was awesome. Bergy is great <3

Seriously, though, I don't think anyone predicted the Leafs to collapse in 2013 because no one thought they would be good. 48 games isn't enough to even out streaks.

(Other late-season drops that were predicted were the 2012 Wild and whatever year the Avs last weren't in the basement – 2010? The Avs are not likely to match this year's record next year, either.)

          • Accipiter

Weren’t the 2012 Wild decimated with injuries which helped them to suck.

        • raditzzzz

thats part of why deadspin isnt in my rotation. i know that type of combative journalism is wildly popular, but it isn’t in my wheelhouse.

      • lizmcneill

The Toronto media had their celebratory circle-jerk in November.

        • 10thMountainFire

It always comes before the fall.

      • guest

Yeah, though I think there are really two sets of folks–the ones who work with the numbers, and the ones who write clickbait and/or post comments proving how smart they are for free. The former understand the limitations of probabilities and that they’re really just finding new ways to understand the game more deeply.

The latter are the ones who don’t really get the numbers, but want to feel smart because they’re 100% right and anyone who ever questioned the Stats is 100% stupid and wrong and old and terrible (unless the stats disagree with the position they’ve staked, in which case sometimes the stats are just suggestions and the eye test they’ve spent years saying is worthless is somehow now paramount (see Seabrook, Brent)). That’s where this article seems to be to me.

        • bizarrohairhelmet

In the end, it’s not the one punch fight some are hoping it to be.

          • guest

Exactly, one punch is a really small sample size.

          • ahnfire

I see what you did there.

    • Bullitt315

Ok, so the Maple leafs crashed and it was predicted. So was an Avs crash and a Ducks crash. 2 years in a row for the Ducks now there’s been predictions of a crash or coming down and they’re still sitting at the top of the hardest division in Hockey.

      • amontesawesome

The myth of Anaheim is pretty tiresome.

First, the league has 30 teams and it is likely that every year a team will get lucky for 82 games. It is unlikely for an individual team to over perform, but when looking at a collection of teams, as the collection grows in size, the odds of a team beating the odds grows pretty quickly. ie Say you’re rolling a die. While the odds of rolling a 6 are just 1/6, if you roll the die 6 teams, you’re odds of rolling one 6 increase dramatically.

Second, yes, Anaheim had a good record last year and, yes, Anaheim has a good record this year. But does the success have anything in common? Well, not as much as you’d think. And for that reason, claiming that the stats are wrong because Anaheim has been good for 1.6 seasons is incorrect.

This season, Anaheim leads the league in shooting percentage. They have shot 9.74% during 5on5 play, an extremely high number. The 2nd place team is nearly a full percent below at 8.8%. Their goaltending has been a solid, but unspectacular 92.6%, good for 11th in the league.

Now, at this point you might say, well clearly Anaheim takes more quality shots than all the other teams. They’ve figured out how to win despite not having possession because they take better shots. But, if you were to say that, you would be wrong.

In 2013 Anaheim shot only 8.59%, like their sv% this year, a good but unspectacular number outside the top 10. They’re shooting percentage increased by 14%. What made their 2013 successful was their goaltending which posted was 93%, 6th best in the league.

Stat advocates claimed that 2013 Anaheim’s high sv% masked the team’s flaws and allowed them to win more games than one would expect and that their sv% was likely to regress. Sure enough in 2014 Anaheim’s save percentage fell out of the top 10, but their shooting percentage surged all the way to number 1. Boy, if the Ducks were able to exercise such control over these numbers they really should have shot the way they have this year with their defense of last year.

tl;dr version: Last year Anaheim was all about a high team save percentage and a modest shooting percentage. This year Anaheim is all about modest team save percentage and high shooting percentage.

        • Bullitt315

4 of the top 10 teams in Corsi didn’t make the playoffs. 4 of the Bottom 10 teams did.

          That’s a lot of good/bad luck

          • birdhead

I’m not sure I agree that it’s a lot of luck but I only have the Devils and Canucks for Fenwick http://www.extraskater.com/teams/on-ice?sort=fenwick_pct

Devils it’s 75% Martin Brodeur refusing to retire and 25% abysmal shootout luck. Canucks, I really don’t watch them enough to know.

          • amontesawesome

? That’s not true re: top 10. 7/10 in Corsi close are in the playoffs (8/10 if we use Fenwick close, but, whatever, you said Corsi.)

The three teams are New Jersey, Vancouver, and Ottawa. New Jersey is a team I would be open to arguments about their employing a system which inflates their possession numbers at the expense of shot quality. (But even they would have made the playoffs if they didn’t go 0-11 in shootouts and given 35+ starts to Brodeur. But, again, that’s irrelevant.)

Of the top 10, 70% made the playoffs. Of the bottom 10, 40% made the playoffs. That’s pretty significant and has consistently born out that way in the post-lockout NHL. It’s like the chart put together by Habs Eyes on the Prize a while back. 70 teams have finished between .400-.449 in FenClose and 31% have made the playoffs. 66 finished between .450-.499 and 76% made the playoffs.

          • birdhead

if something isn’t a 100% guarantee of Stanley Cup success it just isn’t good enough, apparently

          • Bullitt315

My main point, and it’s almost always my main point with stats, is everyone loves to point to stats when it proves their eye test right, and immediately ignore them when it doesn’t #seabrook.

          • birdhead

Er, I think a lot of the people around here who talk about stats have been consistent in pointing out the disjunct between what the TOS are saying about Seabrook and his fancystats.

          • birdhead

I figured out that the top 10 in Corsi he was referring to was Corsi in all situations (i.e. even strength and special teams, close/trailing/etc). Then you move the Canes into the top 10 with the Devils, Canucks and Senators. Not coincidentally, the Canes (who are 22nd in CF% close) are also top-10 in powerplay time and in time spent trailing.

cliffkoroll’s thought on Bourne’s thought on Friedman’s thought on Bolland:

      Friedman:

      15. Dale Tallon likes his ex-Blackhawks. Could see a role for Dave Bolland around Aleksander Barkov, Nick Bjugstad and Brandon Pirri.

      Bourne:

I think this would be a good fit for all parties involved. Bolland is likely to get a decent contract on the heels of a pretty good year, and Tallon knows what he’s getting in Bolland.

cliffkoroll: Dayum, look like Bollie gonna get paid after all, the rat.

Damn fancy Designer Players. Not made any better than the regular players but you stamp a couple of fancy “Stanley Cup Winner” logos on ‘em and they triple in cost. (SEE: Burish, Ladd, Kopecky, Byfuglien, Eager, Brouwer)

Those are good comparisons. Don’t know if the actual pick we got was Saad or Clendening, but Ladd for Saad would be enough for me to take the rest of the day off.

          • Accipiter

Clendening. Saad was a Calgary pick.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            You’re harshing my buzz.

          • lizmcneill

Which we got (plus Paliotta’s pick) because Toronto needed their own 2nd back for the Kessel trade.

Toronto previously acquired this pick as the result of a trade on July 27, 2009 that sent Anton Stralman, Colin Stuart and a seventh-round draft pick in 2012 to Calgary in exchange for Wayne Primeau and this pick.

We had got that Toronto 2nd from the Habs for Lang, who had got it for Grabovski.

Not sure who won, but I don’t think it was Toronto.

Winning and Toronto. Never the twain shall meet.

            This.

          • Waylon

the man’s on a crap team and still plays hard – worth his contract and his captain designation. If memory serves, while we lamented the purge of most of the players the one we never got used to was the trade of Ladd. I don’t think Stan expected it either, but the bonuses given out forced his hand on that one.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Byfug is well worth 5.2 in my mind. But I’ve long sensed I’m in the minority on that one.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

and yet we have Hjammer for $4.1M through 18-19.

Not even as a forward do I pay him that. Though Bickell got what he got so I know nothing.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

I’ll add, he was my favourite Hawk. I just love/d him. I can’t necessarily explain it, except to say that love causes us to do and say strange things. An extra million dollars that isn’t your own to begin with–that’s nothing when you balance it against true and everlasting love.

          • 10thMountainFire

I really liked the guy, too. But $5+ million on this roster significantly restricts our ability to sign guys like Leddy. Then again, so does the Crow contract so I’m still kind of dumb.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

I wasn’t talking about his 5.2 in the context of this team. Clearly, we wouldn’t fit here nowadays, but you look at his comparables on CapGeek … his salary is right in line, and better than quite a few when you factor in intangibles.

            http://www.capgeek.com/comparables/?player_id=254

          • 10thMountainFire

That’s fair. I just have an issue with his inconsistency. His last year here is a good example. Though, admittedly, he moved back and forth from the blue line to forward.

          • Accipiter

Buff at F is worth that to me. Plus versatility. He’s not doing what Hjammer does, but they are not the same type of player.

          • Joe Banks

On Defense, Hjammer is awesome, and Buff is a bit of a pylon. Good offense though.

          • Joe Banks

            hi byfuglie

Buff had his uses. My only issue with him was how serious he was about the game. Constantly over weight coming into camps.

          • 10thMountainFire

            This.

        • cliffkoroll

Amen brutha. Andrew Ference snagged 13.5 million over four years (did he get the C too?) in Edmonton mostly for letting Oduya’s shot go off his skate and into the net in Game 1 I think.

          • Joe Banks

            That was a nice carom…

        • Commit88

Andrew Ladd is a deal for what his contract is. Brouwer is about right. Byfuglien for the numbers he puts up on D, I wouldn’t call overpaid either. Burish and Eager I agree with and Kopecky is a bit overpaid also.

      • Paul the Fossil

“on the heels of a pretty good year” — ?? Bolland has managed to play only 23 games this season. Missing two thirds of a team’s games is a pretty good year? (Making 4 times in 5 seasons that he’s missed significant time due to injuries.)

I like the theory of Dave Bolland plenty, but the demonstrated reality is that he just can’t stay healthy. Which for me as a GM would make it very hard to justify a significant salary-cap investment. But yea I suppose it only takes one GM in the league to be an irrational optimist in order for Bollie to get paid.

        • Joe Banks

I nearly shat myself when I saw that. Injury not his fault, but are they f-ing kidding me?

          • bizarrohairhelmet

That is the product of a team desperate for good news and a hero.

      • 10thMountainFire

So does this mean we get Rat back in two years with Florida holding half the cap hit?

I’ll announce it right here, just in case Stan is reading: I want a job with the Blackhawks with the sole responsibility of bringing in Evander Kane. I’ll do it for free. I’ll need to import someone’s list of contacts, though.

    • ToewsCheatCode

E Kane is a winger isn’t he? Don’t we have more pressing concerns than the wing?

      • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

You misunderstand me. I want him here. I wasn’t framing this in the context “of” reality.

        • 10thMountainFire

  • 10thMountainFire

Evander Kane for Nazem Kadri. Problem solved, problem stays solved.

Not in Van City on this lovely day.

    • jordyhawk

As I understand it, Morin was told he is staying with big club for duration. Issue is how much ice he sees.

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

Morin is not going anywhere, I’d be shocked if Nordstrom goes back down too. Whether or not they see much (if any) playing time in the playoffs once Toews and Kane rejoin the lineup is another question entirely, but at minimum I’d expect both to be with the team for the rest of the haul

      • laaarmer

Oh yeah, they’ll be here for the playoffs.

And for shits and giggles. BOLLIG!

  • Accipiter
    • ToewsCheatCode

“Think about it this way: He’s shooting 13 percent this season, the third-lowest number of any of his 50-goal campaigns, despite the fact that his shot rate is above his career average (5.11 vs. 5.08).”

Purely by way of the eye-test, it seems like the entire system in Washington is predicated on getting Ovechkin the puck as much as possible and having him shoot it as much as possible – angle, range, traffic, coverage or other options be damned.

That hardly seems like a winning formula given his plus-minus and the team’s performance in the standings.

I do agree that they wouldn’t get full value in return for him though, which is why trading Ovie would basically have to be the first step in [another] complete rebuild.

I switched to Avast for A/V. Disqus is working better than normal, which may or may not be coincidence. One note, you have to disable the avast add on for firefox in order to use disqus

    Thoughts on Avast?

    • VanDorp’sMullet

      It’s no Avadah.

    • roadhog

No experience with Avast. I use Trend Micro at work and AVG Free at home and neither seem to have issues with Disqus for me. The sarcasm filter doesn’t work for shite on either though.

    • VerStig

Well it goes without saying that it’s not as damaging as Norton or McAfee, but I had gone through AVG and Avast and they did seem to impact my computer’s performance a little. I’m using BitDefender now, it does its thing in the background and still has done a good job of keeping me out of trouble.

    • Hawkeytalk

Avira. Cute little red umbrella. No issues in 4 years.

    • CozBullsFan

Well done. He could have said, “Do you know how hard it is being a deity with Zus and Jazz Hands strapped to your back?”

      • 10thMountainFire

I may be in the minority but I think Zus could be a secret weapon come playoff time. He’s now somewhat rested, he was key last post season (Scum, LA), and with the tightening up of the play, his work in our own end and his hands around the slot could surprise some people.

        • laaarmer

Won’t surprise me at all, but his skating disablity is going to catch up to him eventually.

However, you’d think it would with Roz too, but he seems to know what he can and cannot do. Zus is kind of in the same slow boat. They seem to get it.

          • 10thMountainFire

His legs concern me but Q has a weird innate ability to manage the older, somewhat broken guys and squeeze the last drops out of them. I don’t think Q gets enough credit for that, actually.

          • Accipiter

            CNS has a time machine.

          • 10thMountainFire

I had no opposition to Zus whatsoever to being a center on the team. I preferred him on the fourth line, where he essentially wound up at the end of the season before he sat a bit for ‘injuries’.

        • YoAdrienne

I really like him, and was happy that he was signed on for another year. I suspect that his real value comes in the locker room and in practice, more than on during games. Heck, one of the most important things he did last season was give Shaw “the talk”. There’s something to be said for having someone who has been around along as Zus, especially with a team that has so many really young players. Really hoping he’ll get that Masterson trophy.

          • zacked

For the meatheads on the internets… Scoring 50 goals, no matter whatever any other variable, means he’s an exceptionally good hockey player. Plenty of one-dimensional players have been immeasurably important to Cup-winning teams. The Hawks, it could be argued, had a one-dimensional Kane at one point. He’s grown into a good, if only average, defensive player. I take Ovechkin on my team any day. The ‘Ovechkin sucks because assists/plus-minus/defensive play’ thing is just ridiculous to me.

        • CozBullsFan

Q can fix players that are willing to learn. I like him. Would he be willing to play to Q’s standards? I don’t know. I guess it is possible.

          • 10thMountainFire

I think Q is the kind of coach that can do that.

          • CozBullsFan

Q is a lot like Thibs. As much as we would want him, I don’t think Stan would touch him with a 10ft pole. Even if we had the cap space.

          • 10thMountainFire

On THIS Hawks team? No. But if Ovechkin (in a vacuum) were on the Hawks, it’s an entirely different team. And not for the better.

My point being, he’s an exceptional player. I take him ‘on my team’. But on the Hawks, a team that has won with superstars but in truly ‘team’ fashion, I say ‘no’.

          • CozBullsFan

Yeah, that’s my point. He doesn’t really seem like a team player. At least that’s my view from the outside. He floats, first to leave the ice, and refuses to back check consistently.

          • 10thMountainFire

Yeah. I guess, in a not-so-succinct way, what I was trying to say is that everyone saying he ‘sucks’ is stupid. Guy is a great goal-scorer. Is he a great ‘hockey player’? Meh, no. He can hit, he can skate. He can shoot the puck. But he’s not a great all-around player. But saying the guy ‘sucks’? Stupid.

Again, the Hawks win with four lines and three defensive pairings in front of good goaltending. Our superstars are special. Toews, Hossa, Kane, Keith, Sharp… all ‘elite’. Seabrook and Hjalmarsson right behind them (though I argue they’re both ‘elite’). Ovechkin simply isn’t needed on this team. And that’s a good thing. Doesn’t mean he ‘sucks’…. just that our system works.

          • CozBullsFan

The word sucks is reserved for Bollig. Sorry haters of Alex.

          • CozBullsFan

            Also, Seabs.

          • 10thMountainFire

I hate Ovechkin. But I freely admit the guy is an elite goal-scorer. Beause… numbers.

But ‘hockey player’? No. Elite hockey players are Toews, Hossa, Kane, Keith, Sharp and guys on other teams I don’t want to name. Ok, Datsyuk.

          • Jimnhlnut

Wasn’t dale hunter coaching when they last won in playoffs? He benched ovi for long stretches because great 8 did not play d.

          • Accipiter

I don’t remember if it was technically benching, but Ovi had his minutes reduced in general. Hunter thought he would be more effective playing fewer minutes/game, or something.

          • CozBullsFan

            I believe you are correct.

        • zacked

          Not at $10 mildo per.

          • 10thMountainFire

I don’t pay that for him, either. Agreed.

  • chidiver

Woo! AC/DC! Unhappy Mike Smith…happy chidiver

    • chidiver

Woops…Thomas Price is unhappy…whoever the hell that is.

      • Arctic Ice

Thomas Greiss. Happy Dallas fans tonight.

      • 1benmenno

        Greiss. He’s the Yotes goalie

        • Arctic Ice

A goalie named Creiss would be a too perfect world.

          • 1benmenno

            Ha.

  • CozBullsFan

    DAMMIT BJS!

    • chidiver

Damnit! They can’t hold on late in games (I was quite happy the last time tho)

      • CozBullsFan

        Yup. Me too.

        • chidiver

          Ekman-Larson is friggin good.

          • CozBullsFan

Yup. He was being a douche in this game. You don’t pitch fork anyone for any reason.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

They had one job. I don’t particularly like CBJ, but if Dallas gets the last spot, there’s a chance, however small, of a Dallas/Chicago playoff series.

  • bizarrohairhelmet

And PHX with the loser point

    • chidiver

And BJs take the extra point

      • bizarrohairhelmet

As an aside, serifs on numbers is bad juju

  • chidiver

Heard a sad stat on the BJs today on NHL radio…in the last 13 sellout games at Nationwide….they are 1-11-1

    • bizarrohairhelmet

That’s like an ugly resuce kitten not getting adopted.

    • zacked

Stop selling that last ticket, stat.

    • VerStig

Actually this might make sense. Could it be that they sell out only when really good teams are in town? Like, us?

  • CozBullsFan

I didn’t expect Gillis to last long after the loss last night. Will TO follow suit?

    • lizmcneill

      Toronto now mathematically eliminated.

  • chidiver

    Soo…meet u guys at Preds-Stars?

    • CozBullsFan

I was watching the TO/TB game but TO looks like they have already given up. I think Carlyle has lost the locker room.

      • 1benmenno

        are they officially eliminated?

        • CozBullsFan

Mathematically, no. 3 games left including tonight. 5 points out. BJs have a game in hand though.

          • lizmcneill

If they lose tonight they are out.

          • CozBullsFan

            Yup

          • lizmcneill

Bye-bye the Toronto Bollands. WTF is that all about? The way they talk about Bolly you’d think it was Toews.

          • CozBullsFan

He is a 2 time Cup winner!

    • bizarrohairhelmet

I’m watching EDM-COL because I have to watch Dallas on the real TV if I wanted to watch.

  • bizarrohairhelmet

Watching EDM-COL and its hard not to see all that young offensive speed and not get a little jealous…and then I go look at team GF.

  • chidiver

Ohh look..Stahlberg blows through an entire defense…..only to miss the net entirely! That looks familiar.

  • birdhead

let’s go Oilers let’s go *clap clap clap*

  • bizarrohairhelmet

Look at the Caps handing it to the B-lose. Nope. B-lose aren’t in a downturn…

    • lizmcneill

I don’t want them to downturn all the way to the #2 seed, though. Then we have to start by playing them.

      • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

I don’t think that’s a problem. Varlomov could steal a series, Miller or Elliot won’t.

        • bizarrohairhelmet

what StB said. I think I would rather see the B-Lose first round than COL, especially if STL is getting the yips. We’ve owned them the last two games and their recent struggles started at the 4-0 drubbing we gave them.

          • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Owned them the last three, save for blowing a 2 goal lead with four minutes to play. Totally dominated possession and took the foot off the gas too soon.

But I’ve learned not to worry about who we play. Wanted the Yotes, lost. Was afraid of LA and Boston, won the cup.

      • Jimnhlnut

Let them both wear themselves out fighting for first. Q’s pushing right buttons and will have Hawks a nice mix of fresh yet hungry.

    • Preacher

They’ve got things all sown up. They’re just resting, getting ready for the playoffs. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

      Wheels coming off?

    • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

      What’s the series?

      • CozBullsFan

        lol

      • 1benmenno

        Heh

      • 10thMountainFire

        I chuckled.

        • 1benmenno

          I chortled.

          • CozBullsFan

            I snickered.

          • Z-man19

            I farted

          • CozBullsFan

            BOOOO!

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            Jesus wept.

          • Z-man19

            So did my dog

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            I burbled.

          • CozBullsFan

            I giggled.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            I outgrabed.

          • 10thMountainFire

            I caught you, predator.

          • CozBullsFan
          • chidiver

            I guffawed

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

5 goals in the last 5 games.

  • roadhog

I’d watch the Oil vs. Avs but I’m stuck with local Altitude Sports and the uberlanche homers. Ms. Pig and I are going to check out Anchorman 2.

    • Joe Banks

I watched for a while, but it was as dull as a Preds game.
Caps are carving scum Jr. like a roast.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

I’m about to dive into GoT Season 4, Ep1

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Backstrom out for St Louis. Left in the second limping, didn’t return for the third.

    • Joe Banks

      Oh my!

    • CozBullsFan

      O.o

  • Joe Banks

I just saw Toronto was eliminated… shocking!

    • CozBullsFan

      :(

      • Joe Banks

        Their fans deserve better

        • CozBullsFan

Yes, yes I do thank you very much.

          • Joe Banks

Nothing against Clarkson, but are you fucking kidding me? That was the beginning of the end…

          • CozBullsFan

Yeah, I don’t even want to talk about it. So many bad roster decisions. Nonis is Tallon on crack.

        • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Indeed. They at least deserved to be the team to lose to the Blackhawks last year.

  • cliffkoroll

Heard Saad on the radio today. Like everything else, he takes the benching in the best possible way. Love.that.kid.

    • CozBullsFan

      Manchild

      • Joe Banks

        I love my SAAD Jersey!

        • 10thMountainFire

          SWEATER.

          • Accipiter

            Uh, no.

          • Joe Banks

Ok, show me where you can buy a Blackhawks SWEATER online…

          • Accipiter

            Nowhere.

          • 10thMountainFire

            I’m going to Hell.

          • Joe Banks

This is why you don’t have a SAAD jersey yet.
            - or are you switching to J – Mo?

          • 10thMountainFire

Already have a Toews and a Hossa. Working on stealing- er ‘buying’- the Saad (away). Also would love a Morin away SWEATER.

          • Joe Banks

Dude, sweaters are ugly, itchy things you’re Gramma gives you for Christmas.

          • 10thMountainFire

            BHH hates grandmas.

          • VerStig

            Does that make hep un-American?

          • CozBullsFan

            Terrorist like even.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Che thinks I’m unAmerican because I don’t like baseball. To each heps own.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

That’s not true at all. Technically, Jenny McCarthy is a grandma and I like her as long as she doesn’t speak.

          • CozBullsFan

No. It’s sweaters. You won’t win this argument.

          • Accipiter

            He already won.

          • CozBullsFan

            NOPE

          • Accipiter

            Sorry.
I didn’t know you would go all caps.

          • CozBullsFan

Didn’t you know. Caps is how you end an argument on the internet. I means you’re serious. Which means you’re right.

          • Joe Banks

I understand the Sweater thing, seriously.
            - But don’t tell that other guy I said so…

          • CozBullsFan

Your secret is safe with me. I prefer the historical nomenclature for one simple reason. Hockey > all other major sports that call their uniforms jerseys. Also, NJ.

          • 10thMountainFire

My grandma gave me hockey sweaters.

          • CozBullsFan

Grandpa gave me my first one. Don’t have it anymore though. Put it with him in the casket. Death is not the end of being a Leafs fan.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Looks good on him.

          • Joe Banks

That is both sad, and beautiful.

          • Joe Banks

            Told ya.

          • CozBullsFan

Tell Satan to keep my seat warm for me.

          • 10thMountainFire

You’ll be right next to me, JFK, and Hitchens.

          • CozBullsFan

            I’m in good company then.

          • Joe Banks

            Can’t you feel it?

          • CozBullsFan

            Yes.

          • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Ever think maybe you’re already there?

          • 10thMountainFire

If this is Hell, two Cups is one glorious eternity.

          • Joe Banks

Now back up on your head…

          • Bannerman

I saw what you did there

          • CozBullsFan

I sometimes ask myself that when the trolls appear after losses.

          • Joe Banks

            THIS.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

If you want to destroy my jersey
Hold the laces as I walk away

          • 10thMountainFire

            See? It doesn’t even work.

      • cliffkoroll

        Sup C Biddy!

        • CozBullsFan

          Cliff!

    • 10thMountainFire

      That’s why he’s going to be an all-star 30-goal scorer two-way beast.

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Compare and contrast to Evandar Kane.

      • cliffkoroll

Heh. I was thinking of Stalberg.

    • CozBullsFan

      No shit.

        • CozBullsFan

Man, the Easter Bunny is a pimp. If you get the chance, you should part with that guy. Also, Santa throws one hell of a beach party.

  • ToewsCheatCode

Don’t look now, Colorado is within striking distance of the Division title. Hawks could be playing the Blues in the first round instead of the Avs. Don’t know whether to be happy or concerned about that possibility… Hawks certainly seem to match up better against them than they do the Avs.

If the Avs do win the Division title, Roy has to win the Jack Adams and obviously Varlamov will be in contention for the Vezina. Just a masterful turn around for that team.
