The ESPN article mentioned Corsi. Is this the first time Corsi has been used in a beat writer’s article? I thought that was just for no-nothing blog people.

That home-ice idea from Cooper is interesting. With the ridiculous parity among the teams in the top half of the league, though, I can’t envision many GMs agreeing to potentially playing 2 of the last 3 games of a 7-game series away from home, including that final game.

    • Bullitt315

Forget the GM’s The owners would nix it in a heartbeat.

      • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

        True. Set and match.

    • OMFS88

That 7th game being away for the “home ice advantage” team is just downright silly. That’s (in very exaggerated terms) akin to baseball switching order and giving the visitors the final at bat. I don’t see the current system changing.

My wife found this circulating on Facebook:

Don’t want to belabor this but I think it applies to all of us here and reminds us of what special fans cheer on the Hawks among us:

On April 15, 2012, United States Army Soldier SSG David Nowaczyk gave his life while defending his country in Pashad Village, Sarkani District, Kunar Province, Afghanistan. He was a big Chicago Blackhawks fan, having grown up in the South Suburbs. He is survived by his wife and children.

So the Flyers signed deadline pickup Andrew MacDonald to a $30 million, 6 year extension, because they didn’t have enough overpaid #3 defensemen.

If you want your mid-day laughs, check out the Flyers capgeek page:

3 more years for 36 year old Mark Streit? Sure!
5 more years for 31 year old Scott Hartnell? Sounds great!
4 more years for 33 year old 4C Vinny Lecavlier? Why not?
3 more years of Steve Mason after 2 months of good perfomance? Sensible.

All of those guys are paid over $4 per, and that doesn’t get into making Giroux the 6th highest paid player in the game for max length (but we can’t make fun of that until Toews and Kane are signed).

    • lizmcneill

Giroux is a young, elite offensive talent. That’s who you pay.

.907 goalies and 35+ dmen? That’s who you pay 1M as depth guys and backups.

Niklas Hjalmarsson: 5 years, 4.1M. Thank you, Jelly.

    • BrandonPirri

      >(but we can’t make fun of that until Toews and Kane are signed)

In the same vein, what on earth is StanBo going to do if the cap drops to 68 million for next year?

      • jordyhawk

What with the rise of Morin as a possibility at 3RW, I think Versteeg could be a casualty….(actually that seems familiar).

        • lizmcneill

that only saves about 1M though.

Oduya or Rozi are probably gone at the draft. There’s enough young D pressing for spots that someone’s likely to be ready.

          • jordyhawk

There are soft benefits too. Like my blood pressure going down.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

I would not be surprised to see both go possibly.

          • lizmcneill

What about Bicks? Depends how he does in the playoffs, I guess.

          • BrandonPirri

Will they be able to move Bicks at 4 million? That Crawford deal is looking really nasty right about now, too.

          • lizmcneill

It is a shame his current deal didn’t have another year on it (although then you run into the DDN extensions). But the options were expensive goaltending, or bad/unproven goaltending. Curse the bad drafts of 05-09!

          • Waylon

exactly. Their options were limited, at best. Maybe Raanta becomes the plan all along, but not yet. He also looks tiny in net to my eyes, don’t know how well he’d hold up physically over the course of a full season.

          • Waylon

you can’t really call it nasty at this point, because the rate of netminder salaries has increased exponentially during the past few FA rounds. He may be overpaid when the contract starts, but he may be firmly in the middle by the second year.

          • jordyhawk

Bickell has modified NTC (capgeek) which narrows options. Don’t seem him gone regardless. If Rozi, Zus, and Versteeg are replaced by Dahlbeck, TT, Morin we could probably come in under $69 (depending on new contracts for Morin, Benny, and backup) but it would be tight. If either Leddy or Oduya were moved in addition that would provide some flexibility.

      • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

        “Fall” to $68M???
        .
If it is at $64.1M this year. It may not INCREASE at the desired rate, but it is not falling or reducing in the next year either.
        .
To “fall” to $68M from $64.1M is using Govt. financing logic, and they really suck at number crunching and balancing the books!

        • BrandonPirri

I’m sorry, I must have been unclear. It was supposed to go up to 71 million next year, but due to the CAD dropping to 90 cents on the dollar, that has been corrected to somewhere around 68 million. We won’t know for sure until after the playoffs are over, but the NHL has thrown out some warnings about it.

        • Bullitt315

Apparently hockey falls under Governmental Accounting #2peoplewillgetthisjoke

      • zacked

I think they’re fine at 68 with some small moves. They’re currently at 67 with 20 signed, that’s not undoable.

Kane and Toews don’t get expensive till after next season.

        • BrandonPirri

At the current point in time, the Hawks lose Smith and Morin, and can’t bring up Teravainen, unless they can move Oduya/Bickell/Seabrook/whatever.

          • lizmcneill

Send Nordstrom and Carey down frees up enough for Teukka and maybe Morin.

          • zacked

Assuming Morin can be had on a “we’re fucked, take $1 million for one season” deal, you could fill out a team on the cheap (Teravainen, Morin, Rundblad, Dahlbeck, a $600k forward) by trading either Versteeg or Rozsival.

More likely you’d want to move someone else in addition for some breathing room. Stupid cap.

          • lizmcneill

I think they keep Ben before Mo, too. Stupid CAD.

          • zacked

Yeah, but Benji already took a “cheap so I can play” deal once, so I don’t know how amenable he would be to that. Since I keep forgetting the changes I made, here’s my “$68 cap, only players in the system, all trades are for non-roster players or picks roster” (because who knows what is available):

Bryan Bickell / Jonathan Toews / Patrick Kane
Patrick Sharp / Teuvo Teravainen / Marian Hossa
Brandon Saad / Andrew Shaw / Jeremy Morin ($1.100m)
Joakim Nordstrom / Marcus Kruger / Ben Smith ($1.500m)
            Brandon Bollig ($1.250m) / <$630k forward

            Duncan Keith / Brent Seabrook
            Johnny Oduya / Niklas Hjalmarsson
            Nick Leddy / Klas Dahlbeck
            David Rundblad

            Corey Crawford
            Antti Raanta ($1.200m)

Problems with that roster: Dahlbeck is a lefty, semi-lowballs for Smith, Morin, Raanta. That's with trading both Versteeg and Rozsival. Clendening is a righty, but I don't if he pairs with Leddy.

Anyway, the point is it's possible to keep the core-plus around at 68, it just means going cheap on the fringe. And actually, if you can get worthwhile return for Roz or Steeger, it might be a good idea to trade them even with a $70m+ cap just for the flexibility and spots for kids.

          • laaarmer

            Uh huh
IQ slotting right in on the 2nd line

My feeling is that Oduya is going away, but could easily be somebody else/combo of the same $

However, they will all be together for this playoff run

          • zacked

It’s not an ideal lineup, it’s a cap crisis one.

Feel free to disagree with everything I write, but do you need to be such an ass about it?

          • laaarmer

            Ass?
I don’t disagree with you that much here. I think Oduya goes to make room for what is needed. I also don’t think IQ will be an auto in at 2C, but he could be.

            But fuck off anyway

          • laaarmer

            In a good way

          • zacked

I have no desire to feud, so I’ll end this line here. My point was “uh huh
IQ slotting right in on the 2nd line”

is sneeringly dismissive in a way that’s not really necessary. Maybe ass was the wrong word, I would’ve edited it out but you had already replied.

          • laaarmer

No reason to end it. And look, I hope he slots right in and scores 20-25 goals next year centering Saad and Kane

          • wowwowweewoo

Oduya going makes a lot of sense. Leddy’s gotta move to 2nd line duties eventually. Maybe 3rd pair of Roszival and Johns, can either of them play off side?

          • Hawkeytalk

Up boating for the “fuck off anyway” laugh, not necessarily for the sentiment.

          • laaarmer

It was meant to be laughable because I am an ass.

  • laaarmer

    Hey xmf,
Your guy is wearing white per Liz (per Lazerus) Regin and Nordstrom too.

    • laaarmer

      Holy!
Look at the lines Myers is posting via twit

Lines: 23-19-20, 10-26-81, 29-65-88, 52-16-28. All righty then. Hey, it’s been a while since we’ve had some line fun. #Blackhawks

      12:27 PM – 15 Apr 2014

      Nice.

      • VerStig

        Bahaha.

        • laaarmer

Toews got his work cut out for him

      • Waylon

more Jedi mind tricks from Q, or else he’s just trolling Hitch.

        • laaarmer

          I’m guessing the latter

      • jordyhawk

Call the Hardy Boys in. The Case of the Misfiring Synapses.

      • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

You know, I’ve always thought of Kane as more of a classic energy-line type player in the mold of a Clutterbuck.

        • laaarmer

I think Q is having some fun.

        • raditzzzz

remember, we don’t follow line number roles on the blackhawks.

      • 10thMountainFire

        The plan all along.

      • raditzzzz

funny thing is, kris versteeg sticks out like a sore thumb on this to me.

    • 10thMountainFire

If I get my hopes up, I’m afraid that I’m going to end up drinking it away.

      • laaarmer

        Oh, you don’t understand.

        • 10thMountainFire

I do. He’s not going to play.

          • laaarmer

            yet.

          • 10thMountainFire

Just a bit more rope for those that need it and hopefully he comes in with a splash.
