• Bannerman

Regin and Zus to platoon at 2C the rest of the way. I guess that’s necessary. So why leave Kane on that line?
    Sharp -Toews – Kane
    Saad – Regin/Zus – Hossa
    Bickell – Shaw- Versteeg
    Bollig- Kruger – Smith
Maybe flip Saad and Bickell to balance out offense and defense.

    • 10thMountainFire

I would suppose Zus is the plan (all along) for post season 2C. The bridge to get there will be the backs of multiple others. Regin is the latest.

      • Joe Banks

Hmmm… what would Dan Bylsma do?

        • 10thMountainFire

          Destroy and lose.

        • DJ

Let the boys play and say “But…but…I have Crosby! And Malkin! We’re supposed to win! All the media guys say so.”

      • Bannerman

Though how much of that is needing Kruger on the checking line? Now that they have Regin, they could slot him between Smith and “Bollig”, have them carry the defensive load and move Kruger in between Kane and whomever.

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

What’s the difference really between saddling Kane with Zus as opposed to saddling Hossa with Zus? Either way you’re putting a world-class right wing on the ice with a center who can’t keep up.

      • lizmcneill

There’s not the horrible mismatch in foot speed (although Saad/Sharpy/Steeg still skate rings around Zus)

    • cliffkoroll

Kruger skates less than 14 minutes per night. It’s not unusual to ‘shorten the bench’ in crunch time. Let’s say in important games the 4th line is down from 10 to 7 minutes. Q could opportunistically double-shift Kruger on the second line- maybe after an icing with favorable opposition. Guy’s becoming a beast at the dot, and he showed he can play big boy two-way hockey in the Olympics. The Hawks can wring an extra few minutes a night out of him.

      • cliffkoroll

This works best in games where Kru isn’t wearing himself out on the PK.

In those games, Kane’s ice time is already down, and Q double shifts him some. Swapping Kane for Bollig in some soft situations in these games is a good strategy.

The point is: the Hawks are short on center talent, so let’s make the most of the talent they do have.

      • VerStig

Ice-time-wise his line is the 3rd line, no?

        • jordyhawk

Tru dat.IIRC 29/26/32 have been mostly sitting when bench gets shortened.

        • cliffkoroll

I’m not talking about match-ups, I’m talking about ice time. Kruger gets 11:18 a night in ES TOI, less than Shaw (12:26) and about the same as Zus (10:58).

Another three minutes a night with Kruger in the right situations could make a world of difference for Kane.

          • cliffkoroll

It could be like one of those sappy RomComs.

Turns out, The Girl Next Door had a heart of gold all along.

  • MySpoonIsTooBig

Hopefully Kaner is as pissed off about how poorly Bylsma coached Team USA as I am, and he channels that anger into absolutely decimating the Penguins at Soldier Field on Saturday.

I mean for fucks sake, how does a coach see his offense entirely snuffed out in the semi-final and respond by making zero changes to the roster, lines, or strategies going into the bronze medal game? How does he see his team go down 2 goals a minute and a half into the 2nd period and still not make any changes? I don’t understand why Byslma never put Pavelski back with Kane despite their being just absolutely lights out in a limited number of shifts together against Russia. I don’t understand why Bylsma never tried to juice the offense against Finland by putting Kane and Kessel on the ice together for at least a couple of shifts (yes I know they both usually play on the right side, but both usually playing center doesn’t stop Bylsma from putting Crosby and Malkin on the ice together to juice offense). I don’t understand why Dustin Brown and Ryan Calahan played so many more minutes than Paul Stastny and Max Pacioretty (or why Brown, Calahan, and Oshie, and Stepan made the team over the likes of Saad, Okposo, or Ryan but that’s on management not Bylsma). I don’t understand why Bylsma was so insistent on bringing Brooks Orpik and then on giving him such big minutes when there were better options left on the shelf.

There’s a lot I don’t understand about how Team USA was both assembled and coached. Might not have made a difference vs Canada, but a few roster upgrades and better coaching sure as hell could have made a difference against Finland in the bronze medal game, also really could have made a huge difference against Russia in the preliminaries – if the US had beaten them in regulation they’d have been the #1 seed and would’ve seen Finland in the semis instead of Canada.

    • Joe Banks

It’s amazing that Pens fans are sooo pissed at Blysma right now. At least partly I suppose, it’s repressed anger for last years disappointing playoffs.

All the criticism matches almost word for word how I felt about the Lovie Smith regime with the Bears, primarily, no adjustments.

Brooks Orpik? Brooks Orpik? – I don’t get the Brooks Orpik thing. I really don’t.

      • VanDorp’sMullet

Others have made some pretty good arguments for why he was left off, but I still think Yandle would have made a nice addition to the team. Wished they’d taken him, Saad and Ryan.

      • 10thMountainFire

Yup. baseball prospects flame out all the time, but as a Cubs fan, so many of our prospects got hyped to build buzz. The little sanity around gets drowned out. I do feel like Theo/Jed finally have a realistic plan in place as long as the natives don’t get too restless and start demanding the Cubs to sign mediocre and past their prime players to outlandish contracts like the last regime did.

As far as the Dragon goes, though, I have a good feeling about him. Barring injury and assuming he can put on some muscle, he’s gonna be a player.

          • 10thMountainFire

TT is one of those ‘once in a great while’ dudes, it appears. Or, if one is a Hawks fan, ‘once in a year or two’.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

This has been perhaps Stan’s strongest area thus far. He’s been great at the draft. Hope he can keep that pipeline churning out prospects.

          • 10thMountainFire

Next time maybe Team USA listens to the Stan when he says ‘take Saad. He’s good.’

          • VanDorp’sMullet

            More Stan. Less Burke.

          • 10thMountainFire

I think Stan’s quote was something akin to Saad being capable of pretty much anything asked of him and ‘a coach’s dream’.

          • neo1978

He has had the “guts” to draft the falling kid. A lot of teams spend all their time evaluating players that they think will be available and less so for players that they think will be off the board.

When a player falls, there is concern that you don’t know what everyone else knows and won’t pick the falling player.

Saad, McNeil and TT all fell for various reasons and Stan either scouted them extensively (even though he thought they wouldn’t be there) or had the guts to take them anyway.

And of course, hitting on some fifth rounders never hurts…

          • VanDorp’sMullet

Good point, neo. All those guys definitely fell. On the flip side, I remember a ton of bitching and moaning (not here, but in other places) about the Clendening pick and that he was picked way to high, etc. Now he could be the best d-man he’s drafted.

          • Bob Lanz

Ok well jury still out on stanbo drafting. Saad awesome pick but every gm in the league passed him up and Stan did three times before drafting him. Who else has he drafted that’s playing for team madhouse? I have not yet looked so this could bite me in the ass. Granted the future looks bright but un proven….. Dragon Boy!!!

          • birdhead

It depends how much credit you give him for the draft during Tallon’s tenure. The only one other than Saad in his tenure as GM is Andrew Shaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chicago_Blackhawks_draft_picks Stan took over in July 2009, after the draft, per Wiki). Other notable Stan names are McNeill, Danault, Clendening, Stephen Johns and Kevin Hayes.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

Yeah, we won’t know about any of these guys for sure for a little while yet, but it’s looking promising. Also add to your list, birdie, TT (obvio) and Hartman and some 2nd tier guys like Nordstrom, Broadhurst, Hinostroza, Ross, etc. We’ll see who pans out, but I like the numbers of good prospects in the pipeline.

          • Bob Lanz

As do I mullet. I like that even if we do not keep them all we appear to have real trade bait for the future as well. Who knows when we might need a top blue liner or second line center

          • Bob Lanz

That’s my point bird. Lots of potential but nothing solid yet. Shaw is a winner give him credit for saad and shaw, both passed over by numerous other clubs numerous times. But Stan took him that’s a plus. The rest we just have to wait for.

          • ballyb11

Joe Borchard = Gavin Floyd though.

And Ernie Broglio = Curt Flood.

          • Waylon

I’m trying to remember a shortstop that was so overhyped it was ridicuous, even for the Cubs. Guy batted something like .750 in AA, then flailed away at anything after he was brought up. No batting eye whatsoever.

          • Bob Lanz

They all wore a minor league emblem from the north side. I am adding to the TCI guide no references or comparisons to the cubs

          • Bannerman

The big difference being that Orie etal were overblown by a bad team/organization that was desperate to generate buzz. The Hawks don’t deperately need Smaug (can we call him Smaug, it’s shorter than dragon boy?) to pan out.

          • Bob Lanz

I kinda like smauag but there are so many great dragons that I think we may need an unofficial official vote on a proper dragon name.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

TBH, I like just calling him the Dragon.

          • Bob Lanz

Yeah me too TT targaryn aka Dragon Boy we can drop the boy when he grows a legit playoff beard. I get a little verclemnt thinking of Dragon with an Indian head

          • ballyb11

            The goat. Serves ‘me right.

        • Bob Lanz

Rightfully so. We already have two of the best two way wingers in the game, one of the top centers in the game and the most dynamic offensive weapon in kaner. The future is bright with Saad. Why not obsessive over a playmaking center that makes this team even more of a threat to score and possess the puck for 59:59

          • 10thMountainFire

Oh, I’ve joined the TT cult. Long ago, my friend…

  • VanDorp’sMullet

Is there any way we can get Legwand from the Preds? Would you want him for the playoff run? And what would you give up to get him/what would be fair to give up to get him?

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Not without trading away a solid 3MM in salary cap space. In any event, he’s a rental, as he’s a UFA next season, Not going to happen. Nothing against the player, he’d be an asset in an Indianhead, but NHL economics 101 says no way.

      • VanDorp’sMullet

Agreed that he’d be a rental and the price would probably be high. Aren’t salaries prorated though? I’m honestly not on top of NHL economics, but his cap hit is $4.5M and there’s about a 1/3 of the season left so wouldn’t you have to clear out about $1.5M? If they’d take (and Stan would be willing to deal) Bickell, plus someone like Pirri, and then a pick and a prospect, I think it’d be feasible. Just a matter if they would be interested in a deal like that…

        • MySpoonIsTooBig

I highly doubt that Stan is already prepared to give up on a player he signed to a 4 year extension last summer. Whatever you think of Bickell’s play thus far this season and his current contract, chances of him being traded right now are virtually nil.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

I understand that and agree. My point was more that it isn’t totally unfeasible that Stan puts together a package to even out cap hits. I don’t think Bickell is going anywhere (partly because of the recent 4 year extension and partly because of this level of production in relation to that contract).

          • 10thMountainFire

Paging Uncle Dale. Uncle Dale, you have a call waiting…

          • VanDorp’sMullet

Bickell for Huberdeau. Make it so!

          • lizmcneill

            Barkov, Hoobadoo’s a winger, right?

          • VanDorp’sMullet

Why not both? (And I think Hoobadoo’s a center originally though maybe FLA is using him as a winger? I don’t get to watch them much).

          • lizmcneill

Who apart from Bickell would you give up? There’s no pro-rating thanks to Khabi’s explodey groin/shoulder/vodka bottle.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

That is exactly my original question above, but no one seems to want to play. Note that it’s a hypothetical.

Didn’t know that the Khabi Vodka Bottle Experience (TM) impacted prorating. A shame that he was ever signed to begin with.

Jonny Jackass says Hawks shopping Bickell!
            LOL

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

It’s the Ecklund school of thought – throw enough shit at the wall and eventually something will stick and you’ll be able to say “see I told you I had sources that were plugged in”

          • VanDorp’sMullet

What shit am I throwing against a wall here?

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

You’re not throwing shit against the wall, I was responding to Joe talking about Jonny Jackass saying that the ‘Hawks are currently actively shopping Bickell. There’s a major difference between spitballing random trade ideas that involve players unlikely to move (which is what you’re doing, and what I do plenty myself – see my comments yesterday about prying John Carlson away from the Caps) and claiming that players that are realistically unlikely to move are being actively shopped. One is a thought exercise – just because it’s unlikely doesn’t mean it’s not fun to think about it, and there’s no claim that any such deal is actually in the works – whereas the other is the Ecklund-style throwing shit at walls, say a whole bunch of stupid shit and when most of it doesn’t happen you can just claim the deal fell through but when you get lucky and one does you can claim that you had it first thanks to your “insider” information.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

Cool… I thought that you were perhaps misreading the intent of my post, but you understood it perfectly well. And yes, Ecklund is a moron. I’m surprised that /Ecklund’d hasn’t become a meme here yet. Thanks for clarifying Spoon.

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

Yeah, sorry about that, only meant to link Johnny Jackass to Ecklund not you

          • 10thMountainFire

Not completely out of the realm of possibility…

          • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Agree, nil for now, but go up exponentially as the time comes to resign DDN / Saad.

Yeah, I know Saad is an RFA, but he is one RFA that would be worth an offer sheet if I were the GM of a young, rebuilding team.

        • Why

You’re not accounting for the replacement goalie. Blackhawks would need two on the roster regardless.

        • Why

Assuming you’re already at the cap, no. Because you’ve got to trade guys scheduled to make 1.5 million on a pro-rated basis too.

    • cliffkoroll

Legwand would be a sweet pick-up, but I wouldn’t want to back up the truck for him.

Supposing the Hawks had never executed the dumbshit Harvey Birdman signing, how much bigger a contract could they fit now, reflecting the cap proration for any signing? Anyone? Cuz if they’re getting dinged $1.7 million for Harvey, that’s a $5 million or so contract, right?

      • Why

You need to account for the price of a back up goalie. Hawks would still need two roster goalies.

        • 10thMountainFire

          Shaw.

        • cliffkoroll

Raanta’s taking up cap space, right?

          • Why

The short answer is no. With the way the LTIR works, the Hawks essentially have Khabi’s salary to use as “emergency” money. They’ve got to use up all of their regular cap room first, but then they can start using that emergency money.

The truth is that Khabi makes about $800,000 more than Raanta per year. If the Hawks didn’t sign Khabi, presumably Raanta would have been the back up. And that means about $800,000 more to play with (which could have been prorated).

          • birdhead

My impression was that the emergency money doesn’t bank in the same way that regular cap money does (i.e. you can exceed the cap with someone on LTIR but you don’t get to save money that you otherwise would not have spent – i.e. if you’re 1.5m below the cap you can save that money for later in the season, but if you then have to replace an injured player who makes $2m with someone on an identical salary, you can do that – but you’re no longer saving that $1.5m.) Correct?

          • Why

You’re right. The reason it doesn’t “bank” is because you’ve got to use up all of your regular cap room first.

If the hypothetical we’re dealing with here is “Khabi was never signed”, we wouldn’t be talking about emergency room, we’d be talking about regular room. But you still have to have two goaltenders.

EDIT: In your hypothetical, you have to use the 1.5 million up before you get to the emergency money. So if a 2 million dollar guy gets hurt, you have the prorated 1.5 million plus the 2 million dollar injury exception to spend.

          • birdhead

            Helpful, thank you!

          • Why

It’s slightly more complicated but that’s the basic idea. Capgeek outlines it all here:

            http://www.capgeek.com/faq/how-does-long-term-injured-reserve-LTIR-work

          • VanDorp’sMullet

Until you (and the fab lizmcneill down below) explained this, I had no idea about these rules. Thanks for the info. I have now learned this and will unfortunately probably unlearn it while drinking scotch.

          • Why

Here’s the easy way to think of the LTIR:

For the purposes of injuries on the cap, the NHL is like a rich uncle and the teams are like spoiled children. If Lil’ Stanny Blackhawk crys, “I brokes my Khabibulin, cans I have more money, Uncky Gary”, Uncle NHL replies “You already have lots of money and you have to spend that first. Quit complaining.”

But Lil’ Stanny knows that Uncky Garry is easy to trick. So first of all he gets a newer, cheaper replacement for his broken Khabibulin, which worked really hard and was awesome back when he first he got it, but was kind of old and not that much fun to play with any more. Then he breaks open his piggy bank and spends all of his allowance on ice cream that will melt right away but that’s kind of awesome to have right now.

He then starts crying and makes big doe eyes at Uncky Gary. Uncle NHL gets sad and tells him he can have the extra money if he finds other toys he likes so long as his Khabibulin stays broken.

Then, if everything works out, Lil’ Stanny gets a bright shiny trophy while Lil’ Dale complains that his daddy doesn’t even give him an allowance.

  • jordyhawk

Apparently we are entering the new frontier with 13 forwards (and that’s not even counting our often-maligned swingman). So who sits tomorrow?

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

Ideally? Bollig. Realistically? Bickell. My guess for the lines:

      Sharp-Toews-Hossa
      Steeg/Saad-Regin-Kane
      Shaw-Zus-Steeg/Saad
      Bollig-Kruger-Smith

      • lizmcneill

First lines we've seen this week (take them for what they are): 10-26-81, 23-12-88, 29-65-20, 52-16-28. #Blackhawks— Tracey Myers (@TramyersCSN) February 26, 2014

Could be Zus, as he’s in for Toews.

        • jordyhawk

Zus cryogenically frozen until playoffs could work.

          • lizmcneill

Oh, that would explain why he’s so slow. Freeze Tag, on skates.

      • ChicagoNativeSon

I doubt Bickell sits. Q actually paid him a compliment the other day. Said he looked good in practice. Bickell smash.

My guess is Zus might get a rest.

    • 10thMountainFire

Bickell and Versteeg seem to be on the Q-house list.

That was excellent. It went a long, long way towards helping me both understand and appreciate just how important the team defensive schemes and talent of the Hawks blueliners have been in the success of this team’s run since 2009. Specifically, an appreciation for how familiarity of the defensemen among pairing partners and how Keith’s speed can be force multipliers in shutting down opponent rushes. It also helped me appreciate just how Leddy’s speed and agility could make for an exceptional defenseman someday. Thanks for posting that.

Hawks acquire Brian Connelly from the Wild in exchange for Brad Winchester. Is that what you had in mind?

  • ballyb11

With the hardest schedule in the league, this team is fucked.

    I’m worried.

    • 10thMountainFire

The post season schedule, by its very definition, is the hardest in the league. They’ve won two Cups playing that schedule.

LA really controlling the game. Colorado looks lost.

    • birdhead

They did just have nearly 4min consecutive PP time.

      • CozBullsFan

Mostly because Colorado losing control of the game. They’re taking a lot of bad penalties.

        • birdhead

          Point.

  • birdhead

Even if they lose you have to be excited if you’re an Avs fan by this game, right? Such exciting goals scored by a pretty young forward corps.

    • CozBullsFan

Not really. They controlled the first half of the game and they have gone ghost. LA hasn’t played all that well to be honest.

      • birdhead

I’ve only seen this period and the goals, which I guess gives me a skewed view. But if you’re going to be bad, you may as well be fun bad, eh?

        • bizarrohairhelmet

          My god, we are spoiled.

          • birdhead

A fun team that is also good? I reckon.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Imagine being in the shoes of an Avs, Wild, Sharks, etc. fan. Seems like they’re getting all the pieces together and yet something is always missing.

          • CozBullsFan

            I prefer happy thoughts.

        • CozBullsFan

Colorado had control of the game. They are taking stupid penalties because they took their foot off the gas.

  • CozBullsFan

Hell of a save by Jones.

  • birdhead

    Oh man Martin Jones.

IDK I don’t think this period has been that lopsided.

    • CozBullsFan

Jones has made some great saves. LA has made the best of their opportunities. Colorado…they’re channeling their coach.

      • birdhead

Helps that the Nucks might not make the playoffs this year

        • QCBlackhawk

And that the wheels appear to be coming off everywhere. Kesler apparently wants out

          • CozBullsFan

Honestly not surprised. St. Louis asked to be traded earlier too.

          • birdhead

Which is weird bc the Lightning aren’t that bad this year/actually are pretty good.

          • CozBullsFan

St. Louis understands that he has only so many seasons left. He has won a cup but he probably doesn’t want to just play his final seasons on a team that may or may not make the playoffs. I don’t blame him. He wants to go out on a high. He deserves that much.

          • birdhead

They’re second in division (with games in hand) and third in the conference, and they’re about to get Stamkos back. They’re almost definitely making the playoffs – at least if they keep St Louis. And they’ll probably at least make it til the … well okay, second round where they’ll see the Bruins, but still. There are only a handful of teams more assured of making the playoffs and I don’t think any of them are necessarily better shots at the Cup, are they? It seems to be more motivated by a personal issue with Stevie Y, which I guess is fine too.

          • CozBullsFan

Stevie Y may have something to do with it. That’s one of the rumors making the rounds. Honestly, TB can only make it so far in the playoffs and I’m betting that is a big part of his decision to ask for a trade. Either way, he deserves a real chance at another cup.

          • birdhead

What team out there has a better chance than TB and cap space?

          • CozBullsFan

Boston, Minnesota, Montreal, and Anaheim according to Capgeek. LA might depending on the trade.

          • birdhead

I’ll give you Boston and Anaheim, but do they want him? Minny and Montreal, OTOH, I don’t think have a better shot than TB.

          • CozBullsFan

Would they want him? Sure. Boston could use a Top 6 RW. Anaheim, idk. They are set on the RW. Minny and Montreal would become contenders if they added him.

          • lizmcneill

Depends if Boston want to resign Iggy after this season. They have 3 top-6 RWs at the minute (Iggy, Eriksson, (superior brother of Worst) Smith.

          • 10thMountainFire
