  • redkoolaid

Just when I thought I couldn’t hate Vancouver anymore. their asshole coach opens his mouth and jump starts my day. Hating the Canucks is better than caffeine.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

      and easier to obtain.

      • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

And both get burnt when things get overheated.

        • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

And if you add either to brownie mix, it ruins the brownies.

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

and too much of either can stunt a child’s growth?

          • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

Worse. Too much Vancouver hate will make you a Vancouver resident.

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Players like Datsyuk is why I really can’t hate the Wings. As opposed to players like Hansen and Torres, which make it easy to hate Phoenix and Vancouver.

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

I hate both the Wings and the Canucks, but they’re completely different types of hate. With the Wings, my hatred is built upon a foundation of respect and it is really just directed at the organization itself as opposed to individuals specifically (other than Bertuzzi and Cleary, though their being on the team is not the reason I hate them). I don’t begrudge former Red Wings players. I don’t watch Jiri Hudler in Calgary and mutter under my breath about how much I hate him as a former Red Wing. I didn’t hate Sergei Federov when he was on the Caps or when he was on the Jackets (though I did feel kinda bad for him then). I truly enjoyed having the privilege to watch the amazing careers of Steve Yzerman and Nick Lidstrom, even if the results they produced often broke my heart. I feel the same way about Datsyuk now.

With the Canucks, on the other hand, it’s the polar opposite. I couldn’t give 2 shits about the franchise, but I vehemently hate (for good reason) most of the people associated with it. AV, GMMG, and even ownership are whiny, disingenuous fuckwads. They breed a culture of taking cheap shots and crying to the refs. Unlike the Wings, when their players go elsewhere I actively root for them to fail miserably. Even before the cheap shot on Hossa in last spring’s playoffs I was hoping for Raffi Torres to get hit by a bus. I enjoy the fact that the Buffalo Sabres suck this year after acquiring Christian Ehrhoff and Cody Hodgson. I wish nothing but failure for Sami Salo in Tampa Bay. I was torn during the SCF last year because I wanted neither Steve Bernier nor Willie Mitchell to have the opportunity to raise the cup.

It’s still hate for both of the, it’s just 2 completely different kinds of hate.

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

It took Twitter for you to figure out Vancouver has bad fans? The fires and looting weren’t just a teeny little hint?

    • KenOda

Didn’t you hear that wasn’t Vancouver fans, it was anarchists disguised as Vancouver fans… no but really fuck them.

      • 10thMountainFire

The ‘rape’ tweet by Canucks Central was especially classy of them.

      • Waylon

        you mean anarchists from…Oregon.

  • MattC86

I think what’s pissing me off most – and this goes beyond this game
or this team – is that we all spend countless hours talking about
fighting and instigators and retaliation and “The Code,” when the whole
thing has turned into a fucking scam. To whit, Bollig goes after Weise
after a clean and legal shot on Kruger. Weise answers the bell, fights,
Bollig gets the additional penalty, Hawks have to kill a penalty, but
the team is “inspired by Bollig’s noble defense of his teammates” or
    some such nonsense.

Hansen, at the very least, launches a reckless forearm that drills
Hossa in the back of the head and leaves a superstar crumpled in a heap
from what is (regardless of intent) clearly an illegal shot. And yet
nobody gets in on Hansen right away – except the captain jawing at him -
and later, all Bollig can do is grapple at him.

The whole protector thing is such a scam, because nobody gets taken
to task after an illegal shot. They go to the box or get thrown out or
whatever, but the goons are left to police up legal hits on their fourth
line teammates. You’re telling me Torres having to endure a couple
seconds of Jamal Mayers was retribution? Or Hansen undoubtedly having to
fight Bickell or somebody else (he’ll never drop with Bollig even if
they do get on the same shift) next time will be retribution? No. The
whole fucking “goon protects our superstars” thing is bullshit. I’d love
to see the last recent really dirty play that got an immediate
“accountability fight” like Bollig gave Weise or Staubitz gave Bickell
    last week.

The whole thing is a fucking scam to make us feel better about the
fact that dirty plays by shitbags in this sport knock out superstars.
And if I were a Canucks fan or a fan of any team that has endured
Carcillo, Matt Cooke, Tie Domi, Chris Simon, or Claude Lemieux cheap
shots, I’d feel the same. It’s all bullshit.

    • 334Rules

I think what we have to remember about this whole “inspiring your team” stuff is that we’re talking about a bunch of 20-25 year old guys who have spent most of their lives playing a bruising, fast, physical game. One in which the tradition of this “code” is regularly discussed. Whether I, as a 50-something year old man who’s organized sports days are way behind him (and did not include hockey, though I did play some on ponds and back yards like a lot of kids), thinks it matters is utterly beside the point.

      • MattC86

Fair point, and in my limited sieve junior experience, that attitude holds true. But my point is it’s fucking dumb – if they actually fought guys and beat the shit out of people after cheap shots, I’d support the theory fully. But they don’t, only after the legal hits, which is really just an insult to someone’s manhood.

  • CozBullsFan

Hansen has a hearing today for the hit on Hossa. I hope he gets what he deserves for that but, it still won’t bring Hossa.

  • raditzzzz

why is it that hockey is the only sport where no talent a$$-clowns get to brain the super stars who put butts in seats and eyes on tv’s and its just like another day at the office. its just not cool, man.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

But they aren’t No Talent Players and it’s not just the NHL Two Words: Ndomuking Suh. We are Americans, we pay to see violence. So do the Canadians, but at least if it’s in a movie and not in a hockey rink, the decry it.

      • raditzzzz

i know there was the whole paid to injure scandal, and i don’t watch a ton of football and am sure there is some amount of that going on over there, but seriously, i do get frustrated with the liberties hockey players have in terms of what they can do to other players.

and to be honest, im not sure i agree with you concerning the idea of paying to see violence. i tune in to watch skill, plain and simple. i could care less if hockey banned fights, and while checking is an integral part of the game, i don’t sit back and reminisce about devastating hits. what i remember are goals like hoss scored wrapping around schneider, big time saves like razors keep in and tick tac toe passes from kaner. that is what i am interested in. you can say im lying or something like that, but you can’t deny hoss keeps our eyes glued to the screen with performances like last night. and its just a shame someone can just come around and shiver him to the dome and side line one of the reasons why people are so excited about this club.

        • justforkicks

yes agreed 100%. the big hits can get me hyped up when they happen, but that passes and what i want to see and what i always remember is the beauty of the game in the moments you talked about above

  • Paul the Fossil

Fun stat from a graphic in today’s Trib: during the 16-game streak the Blackhawks have trailed on the scoreboard for a _total_ of 122 minutes of play.

    • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

      Even more fun fact:

When down by 2 goals this season, the Hawks have not allowed a single shot at the net. This includes SOG and missed shots. Their Fenwick percentage is 100%.

      • The Doctor

Whoa. Now that’s impressive. Good job, Hawks.

      • justforkicks

        holy wow

      • Accipiter

        That was fun.

      • jekyll1489

I cant imagine the hawks have been trailing by 2 goals for more for even 10 minutes

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

Awesome as that may be, how many times have the ‘Hawks even been down by 2 this season? Other than the crazy 1st period of the first game against the Sharks when the ‘Hawks faced deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 I can’t recall them being down by more than 1 at any other point…

      • Skags

You mean they can dodge bullets?

  • justforkicks

If you have to be in control of your fucking stick, how in the hell are you not liable for your fucking body? I mean forget about how the officials were shit last night and everyone arguing about whether it was “intentional” or not. Fact remains that he conked Hossa in the head and didn’t even have the humanity to hope he was ok, apologize, or even recognize what happened (I grazed his shoulder my ass). And this is why intent factoring into disciplinary actions can be total shit. Whatever he meant to do (and I don’t buy he was trying to “bat the puck” with a closed fist) he hit hossa in the head. If you can’t control your fucking body, you shouldn’t be on the ice. And as long as players think they can make things seem “accidental” the longer they will try to jump in on these kinds of plays.

    • raditzzzz

i am going to make a measured response. what i actually think happened on that play is that hansen jumped to attempt to play the puck, realized that wasn’t going to happen (just look at his position on a replay, it just wasnt going to happen) and then did what he is supposed to do when an opposing player is going to get control of the puck- try and separate them.

i think he went for a forearm shove after realizing he wasn’t going to get the puck, and instead of getting hossa in the back, it ended up becoming a full shiver to his dome.

that said, i agree with you in that i think controlling what you do with your body is the realm of where players need to focus when it comes to eliminating dirty plays in hockey. did hammer mean to board pominville and injure him when he was trying to keep a puck alive and separate pominville from the puck? i’d like to think not, but regardless, he needs to be responsible for positions he puts himself in and accept the consequences when it doesn’t go according to what he is trying to do. for me, same thing for hansen. guess what, you ended up with a full on head hit, no matter what you were trying to do.

      • justforkicks

You may be right about what he meant to do. The fact is I don’t care, and I tend to not care no matter who it is. All it changes is that it is reckless and not malicious.

  • derlemke

The anxiety from Hossa injury is making this all worse. Hopefully Q’s words that he seemed okay are true.

    • The Doctor

Agreed. Can’t really enjoy the win after seeing Hoss go down.

      • derlemke

I’m in the same boat man. I’m visiting Vancouver to see some family soon. I’ll pee on Rodgers Arena.

        • 10thMountainFire

Let the firefighters put out the fires, man. Save your piss.

          • The Doctor

Yeah. Store it in a jar. Never know when you’ll need it.

        • jekyll1489

This summer, my company decided to send me to a client in Ann Arbor to clean up someones mess. As soon as I heard “You’re going to Ann Arbor,” I immediately stopped listening to what my boss was saying, and thought about pissing on the big house (University of Michigan’s football stadium)(I’m a really big Notre Dame fan). I did, it was satisfying.

          • laaarmer

            Nice

  • Waco Kid

Classic Canucks, cheapshots and moronic comments from the idiot coach.

  • derlemke

On the bright side Craw started skating again.

    • DesertHawk

      Yay!

  • Country_Bumpkin

The Canucks organization as a whole along with their fans are disgusting, low-brow and just plain retched. I hope they never win the cup and they receive some of the shit they dish out. Their fans are truly hateful and devoid of any class.

    • 334Rules

Although if you read through some of the Hawks fans’ posts on other sites, there’s plenty to cringe at from some of our “bretheren”, too.

  • Skags

Just posted this on nucks misconduct in reaction to a douchebag claiming Hansen was reaching for the puck:

    Right on cue

He was reaching for a puck. With his elbow.

Don’t ever change, Vancouver fan. You’re the armpit of the NHL for reasons like this. It was a cheap shot.

The story line from last night wasn’t just the great play of your netminder who kept this from being a complete blow out early or the fact that Kessler received another diving penalty.

No. The story from last night was the cheap shot Hanson put on Hossa- forearm to the back of the head. Blatant. Obvious. And yet… here we are “he was reaching for the puck” I’m looking forward to the whining after he’s suspended.

There is a silver lining. You made history last night. Yes, Vancouver fans, we can add yet another asterisk to your long and storied history. Who did the Blackhawks beat to get the best start to the season in league history? Your Vancouver Canucks.

    • Country_Bumpkin

There is a reason Vancouver is hated in the world of NHL fandom as well as by NHL players as well. It would be fun to see the NHL players police themselves and gang up on this team and enact some justice.
I sound like a meatball but the Canucks have ZERO redeeming qualities.

      • Skags

        I agree.

      • 10thMountainFire

To a man, every hockey fan of every team I knew while enlisted said Vancouver was chock full of garbage.

    • justforkicks

banned in 3…2…1? i can’t imagine that going over well

      • Skags

        I don’t care.

        • justforkicks

i know you don’t and i don’t think anyone here disagrees

          • redkoolaid

What absolutely amazes me is how they can completely ignore the play (not even defending it-just treating it like it never happened) until hawks fans bring it up and, on cue, the usual excuses start to come out. These people really DO live in a bubble.

          • justforkicks

some of those assholes think its karma or shit like that. bunch of idiots.

    • Joe Banks

See my post up above regarding reaching and elbow placement.
What should we call Hansen’s maneuver?

      How about the “Canuck Reach-Around”?

  • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

Anyone looking for tickets to Friday night’s game? I have 2-3 available.

Sec 311, Row 4, Seats 5-8. $125 each (what I paid). These are great seats for the $, compared to what they’re asking for now online. ($175 and up for high 300 level seats)

Email me if interested at chicagonativeson1@yahoo.com

    • 10thMountainFire

I may be interested. Let me work some things and see what’s what.

      • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

That’d be great. Lemme know asap. One caveat, you’ll have to sit within 2 seats of me.

Ya know (well you don’t actually), my father passed away the week before you were honored at the game. He was buried with his Mikita sweater (I kept his Hull one which I’ll be wearing Friday night). He was a veteran of the Korean War and I had him on the Hawks waiting list.

He had bad knees and was using a cane, although he should’ve been in a wheelchair if not for his ego. Seeing you help that veteran that night, not even knowing it was you at the time, had me in tears for about a half hour. I didn’t have it in me to mention that at the time when you posted your story, but it was a really special moment for me. Thanks.

        • Waylon

So sorry to hear about your dad – don’t know what else to say that won’t seem like utter nonsense.

          • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

            Thanks, I really appreciate.

No need for condolences from everyone! I know the sentiment is there, and I appreciate it. My dad and I had a special relationship and he was a hero to me. Just posted the story because I really wanted to thank 10thMF.

          • 10thMountainFire

Well I want to thank you now for sharing that and for what your dad did for all of us in uniform. We’re proud to wear the uniform because the guys that wore it before us made it honorable to wear it. So I owe him a debt of thanks. And I extend that to you.

          • MattC86

            Condolences & sympathies, CNS.

The game sounds like an incredible moment.

        • 10thMountainFire

I don’t know what to say. That is an incredible thing to say and I’m even more floored by the experience. Your dad made the world a better place for guys like me in uniform and for that, you have my eternal gratitude for honoring him with that sentiment. Thank you so much for sharing that. It makes the memory of that night exponentially more powerful for me now.

  • 10thMountainFire

The comments Hansen made after the Torres hit on Hossa are just disturbing in light of his shot to Hossa’s head yesterday. Then, you have his recent cross-checking of the referee. I am sort of talked out on it already. I have no faith that this is going to change… and AV is going to get all indignant if they do indeed suspend him. That entire franchise is full of pieces of shit. Every member of the front office, every coach, every player, every fan. Fuck Vancouver’s entire hockey franchise from the owner to the goddamn fans. It’s not a joke anymore. They’re truly pieces of human waste and I’m glad they’ll never be called ‘Stanley Cup Champions’.

    • derlemke

Amen. It was the Nucks Gm crying and bitching that lead to the 5gm ban on Keith last year. Fuck em all.

      • 10thMountainFire

Or the rape tweets coming from Canucks Central on Twitter? Pure class, ‘Nucks fans.

        • justforkicks

the fuck?! gross gross gross gross gross

          • 10thMountainFire

I’m more surprised that I was surprised that Canucks fans would Tweet stuff like that.

          • justforkicks

seriously. gotta say, i’ve never been more glad that our blogs are so understanding and strict on not having that vile fuckery here.

          • 10thMountainFire

I used to check out NucksMisconduct for shits and giggles. But after their reaction to the incident last night, they can all eat shit. I saw very few redeemable conversations about it last night. Like we’ve been saying, that organization is pure human shit from the owner to the fans.

          • justforkicks

I went there before the game, decided there was no way in hell I was going after once I heard some of the shit people were saying from those who did stop by. the hypocracy among other things, is astounding

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

Quote from @insidercanucks – “Win all you want Chicago keep winning. Come playoff time you’ll be raped by the #Canucks”

Because threatening rape is ever appropriate or funny. Never have I ever wanted someone to horribly maimed in a car wreck (but not killed, gotta live with that pain) than whoever runs that feed

          • 10thMountainFire

That’s the one I saw. And that Twitter account, specifically, had some heinous ones.

          • justforkicks

            so disturbing.

I just don’t understand how rape is a go to joke for some people, how they will continue to use it, and argue their right to use it as if its some joke with no meaning. fuck them.

          • 10thMountainFire

Because people who make jokes about rape are likely the same who think jokes about race, religion, and war are funny, too. It’s all in an effort to shock so thoroughly that you win the argument by default. It’s childish behavior and it’s indicative of a disturbed personality.

          • justforkicks

and then when people say something its always “freedom of speech,” which wtf that doesn’t mean you have no responsibility for what you say

  • Joe Banks

    It’s not like I’m Sherlock Holmes or anything… but…
If Hansen (as he claims) was going after the puck…
The puck is in front of Hossa. Hansen is behind Hossa. If you are behind someone and reaching for a puck in FRONT of that person, wouldn’t your elbow be STRAIGHT?
And yet, the video evidence shows Hansen’s elbow bent at a 90 degree angle…
    Hypocrisy abounds…

    • justforkicks

dude hansen claims it never happened.

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

“And yet, the video evidence shows Hansen’s elbow bent at a 90 degree angle…”

And his hand closed, not open as if trying to swat down a puck. Compare his posture to Hoss.

Hossa: Head up. arm extended, glove wide open.

Hansen: Arm bent, glove hand closed, looking not at the puck, but the back of Hossa’s head.

        • justforkicks

seriously. if shanahan doesn’t come down on it I will fucking rage.

          • Skags

            me too.

        • Skags

The puck is at Hossa’s waist by the time Hansen hits him in the head.

      • laaarmer

        I think Hansen is Iranian.

    • 10thMountainFire

The fact that we even have to have this conversation after every game with those bags of human shit is aggravating me today. Or maybe it’s the weather.

      No, it’s definitely Vancouver.

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

nhl.com names Hossa #1 star of the night.

    • 10thMountainFire

Fuck. I really hope he comes out alright tomorrow morning. Because this entire things is going to make my blood pressure permanently at a dangerous level.

    • ChiBlackhawks

why does this feel like a posthumous award?

  • Waylon

My inner meathead wants Q to tell Carbomb to put Kesler on his ass every chance he gets during their final meeting. That goes for any of their other talented players – fuck them all, they asked for this, they should get it back in spades.

    • raditzzzz

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? IS THIS NOT WHY YOU ARE HERE?

      • 10thMountainFire

        Anarchy in Vancouver.

        • Accipiter

          AV ? Coincidence ?

          • 10thMountainFire

Where is laarmer with that hamster gif when you need him?

          • laaarmer

            I’m right here!

    • hz82

Kesler will flop to the ground and fall on his ass even without Carcillo’s help. He didn’t get the memo that this isn’t La Liga

  • Waylon

BTW, the analysts last night on the NHL network weren’t liking Hansen’s cheap shot, not one goddamn bit. So suck on that, AV.

    • 10thMountainFire

I saw Melrose say he thought it was dirty.

      • MattC86

Momentum is definitely starting to feel like a 2 game ban.

        • 10thMountainFire

To be honest, I’d be satisfied with a five game set. That’s what Keith got and Keith deserved it.

          • MattC86

I would agree, but then again I’d have liked a 1-2 game ban for Sedin as well as the fiver for Keith. I know I’m not going to be satisfied with the penalty (we all want Hansen pinned to the backstop on a rifle range somewhere), so I think I’m just girding myself at this point.

          • 10thMountainFire

I think most of us agreed that Sedin deserved a minimum 1-3. But the league, again, dropped the ball. Which is hard for a sport that doesn’t use a ball.

          • Accipiter

            You tell that to Seabs.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Ladies and gentlemen… Accipiter!

      • laaarmer

Because it was. Hossa was kicking their ass all night. He can’t keep up so rather than work harder, he played like he plays for VAN.

        • 10thMountainFire

I posted a similar comment last night. I think some words were likely said in the locker room between the second and third periods… something like ‘someone knock that Hossa around. He’s destroying us out there’ were translated by the shitheads (and, let’s be honest- that entire roster is shitheads) to mean ‘take the chance when you get it.

Hansen saw the chance and he took a cheap shot. It’s Vancouver Canucks hockey. And I hope a camera is able to capture each and every one of them crying when we sweep them out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs this spring.

  • 10thMountainFire

For the record, ‘Nucks fans are now insulting homosexuals over at NHL.com:

    GLC86063014 minutes ago

All they great music that comes out of the Chicago area and their hockey team picks the gayest song they could find out of Scotland to celebrate goals and wins. What a shame.

    • justforkicks

wow they are really hitting every target on horrible people chart

    • Bullitt315

OMG, somebody said gay. Call the thought police!

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

Way to completely miss the point. You either don’t understand, or are a bigot and don’t care, how damaging such casual homophobia is.

        • Bullitt315

Casual homophobia causes cancer! If I don’t agree with you, I’m a bigot. An evil human being! OMG, what am I going to do! You want to get in a nice little echo chamber about how evil casual homophobia (saying something is gay isn’t homophobia anyways) is do it on a non-hockey blog. I’m perfectly ok not saying things are “gay” here. Thems the rules but linking to third parties talking about how backwoods they are because they have the audacity to have different rules knowing that the current moderators won’t allow anyone to disagree is lame.

          • MattC86

          • 10thMountainFire

Well it looks like I’m responsible for starting all sorts of shit today. Apologies to the members of the board… often I start fires even without knowing I’m holding a lighter.

          • MattC86

No, no, you didn’t do anything. I just find people’s reactions of “It’s so outrageously PC that I can’t call something gay” to be funny. Would you have the same moronic reaction to someone telling you “you’re not allowed to say ‘____ is so black.’”?

Well, except for Louis Farrakhan. You can say Louis Farrakhan is so black.

(Note: Stolen from George Carlin, obviously tongue in cheek. Don’t yell at me).

          • 10thMountainFire

Upboat for the Carlin reference and the commentary.

It’s all about respect, in my opinion. Grown men (and women… I say ‘man’ because I am… a man) don’t concern themselves with bigoted feelings. They stand upright and act respectfully towards everyone. That and we make our own beef jerky. And we go on riverboat gambling trips. And now that is all WRECKED.

          • nextgame

We can’t ‘wreck’ here. Only upboat.

          • justforkicks

            Only for select idiots.

          • 10thMountainFire

I think people find it more difficult to be bigoted here because it’s hard to be bigoted and condescending when you’re not wearing pants.

          • laaarmer

            You have a small penis

          • laaarmer

I was trying not to be condescending. You have a very small penis and that is why your hockey skills are diminishing

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

God damnit! I’m so angry that people don’t like it when I use insults that are by nature bigoted! Why do you people not understand that when I call something gay, thereby equating something I don’t like or consider stupid with homosexuality, I’m not actually being homophobic?!?

          • ahnfire

            Thanks for the insult.

        • MattC86

It’s very damaging. It’s also near-universal. I’m just thankful this group generally abstains.

      • 10thMountainFire

Well as resident… resident, I take umbrage at your assertion that I shouldn’t take umbrage.

        • MattC86

Fair enough. I will raise your umbrage with additional umbrage. Now I’m confused.

          • 10thMountainFire

I take umbrage with your confusion because it has confused me.

          • DesertHawk

    • nextgame

      dictionary.com says…

      gay /
      adjective,
      3. having or showing a merry, lively mood: gay spirits; gay music.
Synonyms: cheerful, gleeful, happy, glad, cheery, lighthearted, joyous, joyful, jovial; sunny, lively, vivacious, sparkling; chipper, playful, jaunty, sprightly, blithe.
So, yeah, I guess ‘Dagger’ is a rather gay song. Perfect for celebrating goals and wins, both of which we’ve had many. I guess they’re just jealous.

      • Black JEM

Nope – that is the old original definition of “gay” unlike the current nasty definition of gay – wait, I mean the stolen definition of gay by gays… wait… um..
        Oh hell with it!

  • JesusMarianHossa

Little encouragement on a bit of a wet blanket morning:

    Craig Custance ‏@CraigCustance

Initial signs from Marian Hossa better than post-Torres hit but Blackhawks being careful not to rush to judgement. Hope is he’s back soon.

    • Waylon

I certainly hope they’re going to take their time with him – who cares about the points record, it’s the playoffs they need to be concerned with at this point.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

This times infinity. I’d rather see Hossa out for a month or more and return at 100% than try to return too quickly and suffer a setback. Though obviously I’d much rather see him return at 100% much sooner.

A nice advantage to ‘Hawks great start is that there’s no need for Hossa to try to rush back. After the Ducks, the next closest western conference team to the ‘Hawks points-wise is Nashville at 21 points (8 behind the ‘Hawks 29), and the ‘Hawks have a game in hand on them. Even if the ‘Hawks struggle a little in Hossa’s absence, they’ve built a nice enough cushion for themselves through this record-tying (and hopefully record-breaking) start that they should be able to weather the storm just fine.

        • 10thMountainFire

The only setback I could see is playing Vancouver again and being attacked by one of their inmates.

        • Waylon

Agreed, and the fallacy of having home field advantage in the SC playoffs is often overstated. In fact, the Hawks just might fare better being on the road a little more.

    • 10thMountainFire

I don’t think we see him Friday, at the very least. I would imagine they’ll sit him through Sunday as a precaution even if he exhibits no sign of a concussion.

      • JesusMarianHossa

If I were a bookmaker I’d make my odds look something along the lines of….

        2/22 vs. SJS: +1,500
        2/24 vs. CBJ: +1000
        2/25 vs. EDM: +750
        2/28 @ StL: +500
        3/1 vs. CBJ: +400
        3/3 @ DET: +350
        3/5 vs MIN: +250
        3/6 vs. COL: +250
        3/8 @ COL: +300
        3/10 vs. EDM: -110
        After 3/10: -165

Ducks announce they’ve signed goalie Viktor Fasth to a two-year contract extension worth $5.8 million.

    • MattC86

That was quick. Can’t wait for his sophomore slump.

      • DesertHawk

Maybe he won’t have one, he is an older guy 30 something I think. And has played professionally for a while I think, but just in Europe.

        • MattC86

Maybe he won’t, but the goalie sophomore slump is as much a product of being heavily scouted by the world’s best shooters and every flaw that nobody dug up when you were a rookie posted on people’s dressing room walls to remind them where to shoot. Where the age may make a difference is that after a few rough games he might not be as fragile in his confidence.

          • laaarmer

            Sophomore slump = (faceoff% / luck) / shot quality x age

          • MattC86

Right, I forgot. So wait, is a higher number better or worse?

          • Waylon

I’d take that moniker as a badge of honor – considering the source.

        • justforkicks

apparently that person thinks Hossa is a diver so clearly every post is suspect

          • Waylon

and remember how Hossa just dived all over the place after the Torres hit. Yes, he dived face first right into the ice and just layed there for over 5 minutes…and he was still diving when he had to be taken off on the stretcher…and that faker was still diving while he was laying stock – still on his bed for weeks at a time, unable to get up. What a farking faker that guy is.

        • 10thMountainFire

No worries. I think it’s funny. I’m glad to have gotten a rise out of the fan base. I really don’t see how I’m the dude they focused in on… except maybe it was the ‘…anarchist fan base that everyone in the NHL hates…AV is a tool…I hate every player on that roster with the exception of Luongo’ stuff.

          • Chesterfield King

I’d add a tentative Ryan Kesler to the “not hate” group on their roster for the sole purpose of US National Team… but other than that, yeah

          • Joe Banks

I’m glad Kesler is back. I had heard such negative things about the damage to his shoulder, I thought his career was in doubt.

Come to think of it, I wonder how Pronger is doing?

          • MattC86

I’m shocked they haven’t just made it official and had him retire. He’s gone. Real shame, as much as the guy is a douchenozzle to play against.

          • Joe Banks

know he’ll never play again, but last I heard, he couldn’t even function as a normal human being

          • MattC86

Yeah, there was an interview with his wife some time ago that was horrifying.

          • birdhead

If you mean Pronger, when he retires, his money counts against the cap. He’ll stay on LTIR til his deal is done.

          • 10thMountainFire

Kesler is the dude on that team that, were he wearing an Indianhead sweater, would be enormously popular here. He just plays for the other guys… that’s all.

          • Waylon

we’d love him, no question – but you know what, he wouldn’t be doing that diving shit, which he still believes in an instrumental part of his game. That’s some shameful shit right there.

          • MattC86

The real tragedy is that like any Canadian team (and many US teams), they have some great fucking fans. They really do. Knowledgeable, intelligent, sane (well, sane for a hockey fan). Then they have the tinfoil hat crowd.

But don’t forget, we have people who yell “SHOOOOOOOOT” at the Madhouse when Toews is cycling in the corner and who think Bollig is the answer to all the ills perpetrated upon DAT HORSA GUY.

          • 10thMountainFire

Wow. You just hit on a pet peeve. All last Sunday, up in the 300 level where I was with a buddy, we had to endure ‘shooooot!’ for the duration of the game.

          • MattC86

Yeah, we have plenty of our own chuckleheads. But I’m just conciliatory sometimes at moments like this, rather than confrontational. Personal weakness.

          • MattC86

Also, I was hoping for love for at least properly identifying your namesake and tying it into Canadian military history. Not that any of them would have noticed.

Absolutely! That’s what caught my eye. Well done and thank you on behalf of the unit. There’s a certain pride up at Fort Drum… and people in Toronto know of the unit via proximity to their city so… thanks again.

      • Joe Banks

And he no longer likes it Ruff.

  • ballyb11

    Gotta say.

Hansen’s hit last night was bad, but nowhere near as bad as Keith’s hit last year, excepting that Sedin hit Keith earlier and Hossa’s previous concussion. The hit was much less violent, IMHO.

    • justforkicks

I’m not sure why that matters though?

      • ballyb11

A lot of apologists last year – “It was bad, but did you see what he did to him behind the net.”

Off w/ Hansen’s head this year. Common homerism.

        • justforkicks

From what I recall, except for 1 or 2 people, everybody else said 1) yeah sedin hit him first but regardless it was a bad hit
          2) keith should be suspended
          3) and were disappointed in him for what he did
          4) were ok with him getting more

Far cry from the denials and its a hockey play that I’m seeing from the other side and also from what you remember tbh.

          • ballyb11

Just my opinion and I don’t agree w/ this, but it is not beyond the realm of possibility that Hansen was going for the puck……….not beyond the realm of possibility. Keith was going for his head, not a shred of doubt about it.

            Hence the different reactions.

          • Chesterfield King

I was arguing this last night.

I think Hansen gets 1-3 games, because it was just BARELY within the margin of a hockey play

          • justforkicks

But that’s why many are saying that it may not be “dirty” but it was reckless, just like him slashing bolly’s ankle so hard he thought he broke an also d had to sit out. He should be in control of his body, he should have enough hockey acumen to recognize that the way they were standing it was. not. going. to. work. whatever his intention, he hit hossa in the head and potentially reconcussed him. This intention shit is complete bullcrap because 1) its opinion in most situations and 2) doesn’t erase the result of what happened. Not penalizing him because “oh well I don’t think he meant to” is not teaching the players to be aware of what they are doing, to have enough foresight and respect to understand when they have to reevaluate their actions, and not making them careful in the future.

Yes Keith headhunted, no matter what his reasons were, and he paid for it. And god willing he’s learned from it and will never do it again. And Hansen should do the same, no matter how bad it was in comparison

          • ballyb11

I don’t disagree that Hansen should pay, just the homerism on many people’s parts. Never ceases to amaze me. It’s like people are watching 2 different games.

          • Accipiter

Sometimes 3 different games, NHL game centre live is great.

tbh i think one of the things that are probably driving people’s reactions is that Hossa obviously just came back from a major concussion, I mean even with the lockout I don’t think he was really cleared till super late. And its not like other players don’t know that, you know? And shit what has Hossa ever done to anyone, you know – he doesn’t even have a diving rep or anything?

          • ballyb11

I’m w/ you. Nobody in the NHL is classier than Hossa. Enuf said.

          • Waylon

I also agree, but you have to wonder what’s in the water in Vancouver when it comes to anything relating to hockey. There’s a reason why their franchise is universally despised in the NHL, and it’s not borne out of jealously. Honestly, can you think of any other team in the league that would’ve had the rest of the continent rooting for a team like the Bruins? Yeah, me neither.

          • justforkicks

to be clear, I respect your view of it and I’m not getting heated at you. I just find some of the arguments coming out of this incredibly frustrating. If you have to control your stick you should have to control your body which is fucking attached to you, you know?

          • Waylon

You don’t “go for the puck” by leading with your elbow, and lead with your elbow into the man’s rear head area.

        • TKHO

I think part of the issue for the “apologists” was that Sedin got away with stuff, not that Keith’s actions were warranted. In this case, Hossa did absolutely nothing to antagonize Hansen.

          • Waylon

That’s exactly the point I would make here – Sedin dished it out royally to Keefer when he had the chance, so Keefer took his shot in kind. Tough shit when one of the mutants gets the worse of the exchange, and please remember who initiated the entire sequence of events that evening. And what the hell did Hossa ever do to anyone? And whom among the Hawks took revenge for Torres’s attempt to decapitate Seabs during a playoff game? No one did.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

I see your point: Even though Kieth’s hit was retaliatory in nature, or perhaps BECAUSE it was retaliatory in nature, it happened away from the puck. Can’t agree that the hit was less violent.

    • detroit must die

Are we really going to debate the DEGREE to which someone received a headshot? ridiculous

      • QCBlackhawk

Have to for suspension length’s sake. Either way, shit was dirty.

      • nextgame

Yes. Yes. A thousand times yes!

All of this debating about degree and intent, etc., completely misses the point.

An athlete shouldn’t have to weigh whether he’ll wind up a drooling idiot that eventually puts a bullet in his own head (or some other form of self destruction) as a result of the affects of chronic traumatic brain injury incurred during his career against his desire to play the game.

Unless and until the league gets serious about severely punishing ANY kind of head shots, regardless of intent or degree, with truly hurtful penalties that are fixed and non-negotiable these hits and injuries will continue unabated.

Oh, and by the way, AV, you are a contemptible ignoramus that is a disgrace and embarassment to your team, the city of Vancouver, the country of Canada and the National Hockey League.

  • MattC86

In an unrelated story, “the Western Conference” is still some nebulous concept ranking right behind “Crosby’s preferred breakfast cereal” and “I know the Caps are terrible but that Ovechkin guy is still amazing” and “Mike Milbury: Hockey Analyst” in importance to NBC/NBCSN. Blues/Avs is your attempt at a Western Conference game? Jesus.

    • Joe Banks

      It’s Rivalry Night!!!

      • MattC86

        That was sort of a rivalry . . . . in ’00-’02. Not since.

Back when Joel Q was done in by Roman Turek. And we thought Crawford vs Smith was bad – Patrick Roy and a bunch of Hall of Famers versus Roman Fucking Turek. Whoops.

      • MattC86

And yes I did figure you were being sarcastic.

  • justforkicks

    wow:

166 – The total number of takeaways by the Blackhawks in 16 games, by far the most in the NHL. Buffalo – way behind with 128 takeaways – is second-best in the league. The Hawks are led by their captain, Jonathan Toews, who ranks second in the league with 22 by himself.

    • justahawkfan

Marian Hossa and Patrick Kane at 14th and 15th respectively. Frolik at 12! We’re also the only team that has four players in the top 20, or even the top 30.

On the flip side of this, Seab is 7th for giveaways with 18. Tazer at 29th. So at least Captain tries to get back what he loses.

      • justforkicks

that is awesome! Hawks done good (except for giveaways)

      • justforkicks

        stolen from aeroplane:

        League Rank Name Takeaways
        2 Toews 22
        12(t) Frolik 14
        12(t) Hossa 14
        12(t) Kane 14
        47(t) Bickell 10
        47(t) Hjamer 10
        47(t) Saad 10
        47(t) Sharp 10

  • justforkicks

Also, in case the rest of you guys missed it like I did – there is actually a second vid about the team at soldier field and it was great.

    One game to Hansen

    • 10thMountainFire

I can’t find a news report. Where did you see this?

      • http://twitter.com/llUrbanAchiever Jeff Lebowski

On the twitters. It sounds like the video was briefly up before being removed from nhl.com

      • girlphoenix

Dreger and Bob McKenzie reporting it now. I’d call it official.

        • 10thMountainFire

          I’m seeing it now…

    • DesertHawk

Dropped ball I say, but not surprised.

      • 10thMountainFire

Do you see a report anywhere? I don’t see any yet.

        • justforkicks

just some twitters are reporting it

          • 10thMountainFire

            Eh. I’ll wait then.

        • QCBlackhawk

I can’t find shit. Also, how do I send private messages on this shit?

            Don’t think you can.

Balls. How would I go about getting or giving my email addy or mobile number without announcing it to the world >:|

          • ahnfire

you’ll have to put the email out for the world to see.

I don’t recommend posting your mobile number.

          • DesertHawk

I think the email might be keyed to the account, so maybe it can be part of your profile, if you want someone to be able to find it.

    • justforkicks

yup dropped the ball imo, but not surprised. I’m sure AV and others are still going to be pissed considering:

@BradZiemer: Vigneault clearly pissed about Hansen having hearing with league: “I don’t even know why we had the call.” #Canucks

      and

      BradZiemer
Vigneault when asked if he communicated his feelings to Shanahan about hearing being unnecessary: “Very clearly, very clearly,” he said.

      • 10thMountainFire

You could have stopped at ‘Vigneault clearly pissed…’ and just filled in today’s whine topic.

  • JRF

I like to believe that hockey fans are smarter and more reasonable than fans of other sports, then I read the comments on NHL.com and my world is completely shattered.

    • mightymikeD

don’t do that. It’s Bad For You. Nearly as bad as reading Puck Diddy comments..

    • QCBlackhawk

Should go ahead and read the reddit comments in the Hansen video thread if you want to cringe.

  • QCBlackhawk

    It’s on TSN now.
    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=416460

Agree with the comments about dropping the ball. One game doesn’t dissuade shit.

    • 10thMountainFire

That’s ok. It was what we expected, I think. I’m sure the consensus here was that the NHL would continue its pattern of not taking this stuff seriously. I’m really only concerned that Hoss is healthy. Tomorrow will have some news, I hope.

      • justforkicks

i really don’t get it – yes maliciuos hit, very bad, only get 1 day for driving your fist into his head. sure they care.

        • 10thMountainFire

I think the whole ‘no previous punishment’ thing had a lot to do with the length of the suspension. I can go with that… if that’s the reason. But I was still hoping for 3-5 games.

          • justforkicks

I thought 2 or 3 would be good. I wasn’t expecting 5 but thought more then 1 for sure.

          • Joe Banks

Sadly, someone will probably have to die before NHL takes head out of arse.

          • 10thMountainFire

That’s what you get for being rational.

    • QCBlackhawk
      • 10thMountainFire

Wow, after hearing Shanahan’s breakdown, I’m even more in favor of a longer suspension. Shanahan convinced me that it really was intentional.

        • QCBlackhawk

Yeah, I didn’t have high enough quality to see the hand close, or how Hossa already had the puck before he even swung the rest of his arm forward.

          • 10thMountainFire

I hadn’t noticed initially that Hansen closed his hand after Hossa clearly went for the puck… and then Hansen leading with his forearm/elbow instead of his hand (to the puck). Shanahan’s breakdown illuminated that for me.

      • DesertHawk

He practically whispers the terms of the suspension at the end, like he’s embarrassed at what he’s saying. /tinfoil hat

    • Joe Banks

Oh god help me… I read the comments! Aiiieeeee

    • JRF

Should’ve been at least 3. Yeah, wasn’t as bad as Keith’s, but Keith should have probably gotten 8-10 too.

  • laaarmer

Vancitydan. Worst blind asshole in the history of blind assholes – IMHO

    • QCBlackhawk

What’s he done now? Also, I saw mhsilver over there being surprisingly critical of the hit. That caught me off guard.

      • Chesterfield King

mhsilver was weirdly a fan of both teams, just intensely critical of both teams

    • Chesterfield King

I like a lot of the people over there, but vancitydan is just endemic of the worst qualities of the Canucks organization and fan base

      • JRF

The worst of them were saying Hossa was faking for a penalty. You know, because after you score two goals and are dominating the game, you totally fake an injury to sit out the rest and get a third liner thrown out.

        • Z-man19

          Makes perfect sense

    • justforkicks

      what happened now?

    • 10thMountainFire

Watch it. You’ll end up on their list.

      • Guest

“But its also on him. You know better JT… ( though, it worked, so
expect him to continue whining the rest of the season at every perceived
        slight.)”

Well if that isn’t just the empty and lightless heart of the void calling the kettle black.

        • QCBlackhawk

Damn, tried to delete since I replied to the wrong person. Oh well.

          • justforkicks

            I replied and I shouldn’t have, I know it.

        • 10thMountainFire

          What is this?

          • QCBlackhawk

That’s Vancitydan’s article complining about Toews talking to the refs.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Eh.

          • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

To be fair, their idea of a good captain is one that repeatedly lets himself get punched in the face without standing up for himself or his team mates so that the coaches and fans can wave their white towels or burn their city down when the team inevitably loses.

          • Joe Banks

The fate of a coward is a lonely one.

          • Joe Banks

Wah! He talked to the refs! It’s all his fault!

          • Joe Banks

It’s someone from Vancouver – too dumb to log in.
Sell him a duck call. They’re building a dynasty.

      • laaarmer

I want to be on the list. Fuck them and their fucking list.

Hey VCD, your honey asshole got a game. He’ll get more, but it will be for real. The players – the entire league – saw what he did. Payback is a bitch.

        • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

They are going to give you such a listing…you don’t even know!

        • Joe Banks

          Hah! – VCD… sounds like you’re calling out a 12 o’clock flasher!
(the techies will know what a 12 o’clock flasher is)

        • 10thMountainFire

I love you Laaarmer. I do. Truly.

      • Joe Banks

Did you ever find that missing screw? I am so jealous you are on their list. And so very proud…

        • 10thMountainFire

Thank you. It’s been a long, hard slog but I’m proud to say I finally made it.

    • derlemke

Yeah. That neoned guy and deathdog showed amazing insight into dumbassery.

    • sc33

      Agreed, 100%.

That guy is absolutely incapable of objectivity, says the most ridiculous things in attempts to justify his opinions even when CLEARLY flat-wrong, can’t formulate arguments that remain focused on the relevant issue(s) and rely on relevant facts for support (i.e. he tries to obscure/change the focus, uses straw men, etc.), and speaks to everyone else as though *they’re* the idiots. In a shocking development (/s), the irony is consistent with everything else we’ve come to know as that franchise’s/fan base’s signature characteristics.

He’s literate, so he’s not a total idiot, but he certainly seems like a mother’s basement-/Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons-type.

  • justforkicks

i mean whatever but how does showing malice yield only a one day suspension?

    • birdhead

It wasn’t really *bad* malice? IDEK.

Chris Kuc speculated that it might mean that Hossa’s fine. Man, I hope he’s right.

      • justforkicks

        isn’t malice by nature bad?

And then its just one more case of them making a decision based on lack of injury, which is 1) stupid (see Landy) and 2)does nothing to take bad hits out of the game.

        • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

well, there is the whole “mal” prefix…

          • birdhead

            Mal. Bad. In the Latin.

          • DesertHawk

            Poor Malaysia.

          • birdhead

Come on gang, Firefly reference? Sigh. I’m so unappreciated in my own time.

          • DesertHawk

I got it. I’ve just always though Malaysia was funny… bad asia.

          • birdhead

Heh, when you put it that way … etymology is fun!

          • Accipiter

We are in a gang ?

          • DesertHawk

            Do we rumble?

          • Accipiter

            I think so.

          • DesertHawk

Awesome. I call the bass line, when our rumble inevitably breaks into song.

          • birdhead

Yes. The gang of commenters who go around making references to science fiction television on sports blogs. It’s very exclusive.

          • Accipiter

Sooo, all this is gang related then ?

          • Joe Banks

Bad Aysia? Damn. So it’s like Memphis?

        • birdhead

          Yeah, I was just joking.

          • justforkicks

woops, i’ve heard too many crazy things today =/

        • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

          malice is naughty by nature.

          eewww, that’s bad.

      • Joe Banks

Crawford was fine two days later, and then…

        • birdhead

And Jeff Skinner just got shut down indefinitely after showing up to practice on Friday after the game where he was run headfirst into the boards twice.

          • Accipiter

If at first you don’t succeed ….

          • birdhead

He’s 20 and it’s his second concussion. Horrible shit.

          • Accipiter

A real talent and fun to watch. Hope he’s okay too.

          • Joe Banks

Karlsson, Skinner, Hossa… is it NOT clear enough the philosophy of many teams (Pittsburgh/Vancouver come quickly to mind) is to TAKE OUT top players on the opposing teams?

          • birdhead

That’s the finish-your-check mentality: all about putting the hurt on as much as you can legally get away with. But IDK man, I don’t think it’s a deliberate campaign of terror. I think the Hansen hit was dirty, but I don’t think Hansen went out there thinking he was going to find Hossa and kill him, I think he made a reckless play that would have been just as bad if it had been Bollig he’d hit. I don’t think Cooke on Karlsson was even that bad, and honestly I don’t remember the hits on Skinner that well but I’m pretty sure they were just basic boarding (in fact I don’t think either of them got called).

tl;dr injuries happen, sometimes they happen to superstars. Injuries are gross, concussions are super-gross, but it’s not a conspiracy.

      • nextgame

Not directed at you bird, but what the fuck does whether Hossa’s o.k. or not have to do with what the length of Hanssen’s suspension should be?
The logic of this thinking escapes me. To me it only encourages more of the same.
The thinking amongst the shitbag players that do this kind of thing will be “I’ll just go ahead and clock this guy in the noggin and turn his brains into applesauce. I might be able to knock him out of the game. And if I make it look like a ‘hockey play’ the penalty won’t be much. And if he’s not hurt too bad I probably won’t even get suspended.”

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

That was puck daddy’s argument. If it’s intentional it’s more than a single game, if it was inadvertent, it shouldn’t be a suspension. PD’s conclusion is that Shanny couldn’t make up his mind.

      • justforkicks

that’s the only thing that makes since. at least he got something I suppose

  • laaarmer

OK back from the padded cell.

If Hossa plays or not, please say we don’t have Carcillo on the ice. Bollig is bad enough. Leave him and his style of play in the box for the season. The team is doing great things without him.

    • Z-man19

Hate to say it laaarms but that’s wishful thinking

      • laaarmer

I know. It’s embarrasing that Carcillo is on this team. He is exactly what hockey teams should not want to be, yet here he is. At least Bollig will face you and fight. Mayers can play as well, without the Carcillo BS. This team does not need Carcillo.

        • Joe Banks

Give him more than half a game… eh?

          • laaarmer

He can do a lot of damage in 1/2 game. He’s a tool. Is he worth putting on the ice? I would rather have Burish and his bullshit than Carcillo – He is, however, smooth.

          • DesertHawk

This seems kind of revisionist Laaarms, He didn’t do any fuckery when he played last year, except the one hit which broke him, and in the game he was in this season pre hit, there was also no fuckery. He’s a better player than Bollig and if Hossa is out, I don’t think we should bench him.

          • birdhead

Concur. Whether he is a shit or not is about team discipline and the role Q asks him to play. I’d rather have him than Bollig every day for a year.

          • birdhead

(Not that I’m a Carcillo fan I just think playing a guy who can barely play five minutes over a guy who at one stage last year was playing top-line minutes is bad decision bears.)

          • Z-man19

Top line minutes? That’s a bit of a stretch. He played over 15 minutes exactly twice. I get what you are saying but his ability to be an idiot is much higher than Bollig’s

          • Accipiter

Bollig doesn’t even know what an idiot is.

          • Z-man19

So it’s an idiot vs an idiot/potential asshat, can we defer to Hayes/Beach/pick an Icehog, any Icehog?

          • Accipiter

            Beach it is !

          • 10thMountainFire

            Ehhhhhh.

          • Accipiter

I like your idea better, Morin/Pirri.

          • 10thMountainFire

I think either one would fill well for Bollig if we dress Carcillo.

          • Accipiter

Carello most likely needs help getting dressed.

          • 10thMountainFire

That’s what Bollig is allowed in the locker room to do.

          • JRF

I don’t think anyone is getting a call up. Q likes Bollig, Mayers, and Carcillo. If Hossa is out, at least 2 of those guys will be playing.

          • birdhead

Hyperbole. But Bollig’s average TOI this year is five and a half minutes. Why not replace that with someone who can play ten minutes and keep up with Fro and Krugs?

          • 10thMountainFire

            Morin or Pirri!

(That’s twice today I’ve posted by daily Morin/Pirri scream).

          • birdhead

I wouldn’t hate to see either of them get a shot tbh. Mo 2nd star for the IceHogs today!

          • 10thMountainFire

            Then get him up here!

          • Z-man19

And also take dumb penalties, I’d prefer neither but I’m not convinced Carbomb is necessarily better than Bollig even though he is clearly better at hockey

          • birdhead

Being better at hockey is what counts for winning hockey games.

Although IDK, I do get what you’re saying: if the choice is between bad and dirty, can we ethically justify picking dirty?

ETA although I feel like dirty should be, by and large, in the control of the team culture.

          • Z-man19

I prefer to pass on bad or dirty, bring up some fresh talent and see what they can do. Sit Carbomb and send Bollig back to the Rock

          • birdhead

If you get rid of the Designated Face Puncher does Toews just end up fighting Joe Thornton all the time though?

          • Z-man19

Is Thornton gonna drop the gloves with Bollig?

          • birdhead

            Good point.

          • Z-man19

It’s all a moot point anyway, it’ll be Car until he gets suspended or blows his knee out again

          • JRF

I would think blowing your knee out on a dirty hit when the team you play for wants to put you on the 1st/2nd line would be a pretty good deterrent for future fuckery for a career 4th liner.

          • JRF

I should say “I would hope.”

          • Z-man19

Some men you just can’t reach

          • 10thMountainFire

            Also this.

          • 10thMountainFire

            This. This. This.

          • laaarmer

Don’t argue with me when I’m right

          • Accipiter

            Yes, dear.

          • 10thMountainFire

What about me? Can I argue with you when you’re right?

          • JRF

Putting Carcillo with Fro and Kruger would make the 4th line even better, and I would say 98% of the time Carcillo’s been a Blackhawk he’s been more interested in playing hockey than being a goon. If Hossa is out, I’d like to see Saad-Toews-Stalberg, Bickell-Shaw-Frolik third line, and Carcillo-Kruger-Mayers fourth.

          • Accipiter

Do we put Stals on the LW just to fuck with him ?

          • JRF

Saad seems like he’s doing fine on the left. Stalberg was pretty much a poor man’s Hossa last year, so having him fill in for Hossa is fine with me.

        • Z-man19

Was he ever a scratch last year before he got hurt? I don’t think he was. We can only hope he lost his asshat somewhere along the way.

      • justforkicks

he’s probably going to be on the top line too

        • Z-man19

          Saad deserves to stay there

          • justforkicks

            don’t disagree

          • Joe Banks

            Saad will stay there.

    • Joe Banks

Relax, dude. The dude brings kilowatts of energy. Send Bollig down, alternate with Mayers, – seamless transition. No worries

    • 10thMountainFire

Actually… if Carcillo’s knee is close to 100%, I wouldn’t mind him on that first line with Marvel and Saad.

  • Z-man19

Holy shit, pit and phi are replaying their series from last year, this game is nuts, 7 goals in the 3rd

    • Accipiter

      What’s the series at ?

      • Z-man19

        I don’t know, pit had a 5 on 3 for like half the 3rd

  • Joe Banks

Make a statement, Blackhawks… April 22nd. Don’t show up. Quote all the comments from Vancouver players and officials, and cite that the NHL is powerless and unwilling to prevent their philosophy of injuring opposing players.
Or pull a San Antonio Spurs and sit all your top guys. Bring up a Limo full of Icehogs. Concede the game, bring healthy players into the playoffs.

  • birdhead

IceHogs beat Peoria 4-0. They’re such a weird team.

  • girlphoenix

Hogs win! 4-0 over Peoria! Hutton with the shutout!

    • 10thMountainFire

      Have a box wrap-up?

      • girlphoenix

Scratches were Dylan Olsen (injured still a ways off), Ben Smith (injured, may be back on Friday), Ryan Stanton (injured, may be back on Friday), Mathieu Beaudoin (healthy, wife is at-term pregnant and due any day, missed past two games), and Wade Brookbank (healthy, terrible hockey player).

Goals from Terry Broadhurst (assisted by Klas Dahlbeck and Ben Youds), Jeremy Morin (PP, assisted by Shawn Lalonde and Brad Mills), Martin St. Pierre (EN, assisted by Kyle Beach and Jimmy Hayes) and Kenndal McArdle (assisted by Brandon Pirri).

Hogs took six minor penalties (3 slashing, 3 tripping, lazy lazy stick penalties) but killed them all off. Their penalty kill is ranked at a tie for 20th 81.8%. Not too terrible but could definitely be better. I actually would not be surprised to learn their penalty kill got worse when the NHL season started losing two of their best penalty killers, Marcus Kruger (what a surprise!) to the NHL and Ben Smith to injury. They definitely dodged a bullet today killing off a 5-3 advantage with Stanton being injured and their top two defensemen in the box, Clendening and Dahlbeck.

They scored on the power play and their power play is currently ranked tied at 3rd 21.4%. It’s the best power play percentage Rockford has had in their AHL career. They almost had two power play goals, another from Hayes, but a quick whistle denied that.

Carter Hutton made 35 saves for his second shutout of the year, first in a win. (He shut out the Wolves in the first game of the season which the Hogs ended up losing in a shootout. Hate you Eddie Lack.)

        • 10thMountainFire

I love me some Jeremy Morin.

        • Joe Banks

          Awesome summary!

      • Joe Banks
  • QCBlackhawk

Why the hell do I put myself through reading shit like this?
“Take off the bird glasses. Hossa will be back next Friday. Your cry baby
team got what they wanted. This was a mid air collision going for a
puck, nothing more. 1 game is more than enough.”

    • 10thMountainFire

I am now proud to have been called ‘extreme’ over there.

      • QCBlackhawk

This is reddit. Not even NM. The nuts on those shitbirds for calling our team crybabies have to be so unbelievably huge that they’d have to be as fake as Salo’s.

      • Accipiter

        I helped break that story.

        • 10thMountainFire

          I love you.

          • Z-man19

            Sigh

          • 10thMountainFire

            I love you. Totally.

          • Accipiter

            You complete him.

      • red palace

        You
        Ask me how I see
Hansen’s hit was clean, oh oh oh-oh-ohhh
        I of course just say
‘Twas as clear as day, just a hockey play
(Doo doo doo, doo doo doo, doo doo doo waaah!)

        You
        Ask why I decry
Hossa’s blatant dive, oh oh oh-oh-ohhh
When my town’s on fire, you must realize
        Smoke gets in my eyes

How can you be, so damn extreme
To think you could doubt my sight
But what the hell, the Shanahammer fell
And Hansen must sit a night

        Now
        Blackhawk fans deride
        Anger I can’t hide, oh oh oh-oh-ohhh
I just shrug and say, when my town’s ablaze
        Smoke gets in my eyes
        Smoke. Gets. In. My. Eyyyyyyyes!

    • Preacher

I made the mistake of reading Kerry Fraser’s take on the play and suspension (“shouldn’t have been one” at all according to him) and then reading the comments. Now I need to find some forks to stab out my eyeballs with!

      • Accipiter

Never ever read the comments, especially there.

      • QCBlackhawk

It’s okay. We can take solace in the fact that as long as they have AV as coach and Gillis as GM, nobody there will take responsibility for anything shitty they do and will not respond to adversity with anything other than caving in.

  • Wowwowweewoo

I think we’ll know tomorrow, what the deal is with Hossa. Refreshed Blackhawks.com many times today expecting to see a call-up. They may have just delayed it to wait for Hanssen’s hearing. No call-up tomorrow, and me thinks Hossa may be ok. Otherwise, I’d expect to see Hayes or maybe Morin. I’d be interested to hear what some of the guys who follow Rockford think deserves the call-up?

    • girlphoenix

There wouldn’t have been a call up today because the Hogs had a game tonight.

      • Z-man19

        Who deserves a call?

        • girlphoenix

I don’t know, maybe Morin. He’s been killing it lately. On a four game point streak.

          • Z-man19

Call Stan, make it happen ;)

      • Joe Banks

Is Ben Smith back yet? If not, does his hand have a concussion?

        • girlphoenix

Not yet. He miiiiiiiight be back on Friday. He got his cast off like last week or so and now is just trying to get strength back. He has been practicing with the team but in the no contact jersey as of Sunday. When he did color commentary for the game on Sunday, he mentioned now he’s just trying to get back in the rhythm of holding a stick again. And also that the no contact jersey is yellow and called the bumblebee jersey.

          • Joe Banks

And he’s a registered Canuck killer. Probably on the same list as Mountainfire.

          • 10thMountainFire

Me and Ben may need to talk. Set it up, please, girlphoenix.

          • Z-man19

Have you lost your mind? You think GP is gonna set you up with Ben Smith?

          • 10thMountainFire

She’s free to sit, gawk, stare, drool, giggle, whatever. I just need to discuss strategy with the lad.

      • Wowwowweewoo

Haven’t there been call-ups on game days before? I’d think the big club would prefer to have a fresher player with an extra day of practice with his new line mates, Rockford be damned.

        • girlphoenix

Well the Hawks didn’t have practice today so that wouldn’t give him any more time.

          • wowwowweewoo

But they have practice tomorrow, and whoever gets called up would be a bit fresher from not playing and traveling overnight back to Chicago.

          • girlphoenix

cause it’s so far from peoria to rockford and rockford to chicago?

    • Accipiter

They wouldn’t necessarily need one. Bollig and Mayers could play.

      • Z-man19

When you put it that way, they better make a fucking phone call

        • Accipiter

          I knew you would understand.

          • 10thMountainFire

Because, like, you mean Mayers would play and Bollig would just play with himself. Right?

  • Toews still makes funny faces!

    I am Marian Fucking Hossa,
That is all I care to hear from Friday’s game. Oh and Chelsea Dagger like 15 times.

    • 10thMountainFire

I would also like to hear ‘Hawks win’. But that’s just me. Do your own thing.

      • Toews still makes funny faces!

If 15 Chelsea Daggers do not make a Hawks win, Chicago, we have a problem!!!!

        • 10thMountainFire

          Or we have a Karlsson.

          • Toews still makes funny faces!

I like to think the Hawks defense has improved to make up even for that!!!!

          • 10thMountainFire

            /Boynton’d

          • Joe Banks

I thought Karlsson got whacked by the Cooke… oh, wait.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Yeah. That’s the ‘good’ Karlsson.

          • DesertHawk

            Is ours bad?

          • Toews still makes funny faces!

That is all relative, just like Quality of shot vs SV%.

          • 10thMountainFire

I’m not even sure he exists. Sure, I see photos and hear stories of this supposed “6’6″ Swedish giant netminder” we ‘acquired’… but I just remain skeptical. I don’t know if he’s real.

  • Joe Banks

Let’s take Hossa’s Helmet to church and pray for his helmet’s brain.
    http://deadspin.com/5897205/its-more-than-a-little-weird-to-see-10000-people-pray-for-daniel-sedins-concussed-brain

But seriously folks, when you hit yours knees before going to bed, say a little prayer for Panda.

    • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

They should have prayed for his courage and or charisma.

    • 10thMountainFire

Ok, that’s creepy on so many different levels. Seriously, I don’t ever need to see that again.

      • Accipiter

If you think that is creepy, I’m not looking.

        • 10thMountainFire

It was like a Cult of Sedin.

  • girlphoenix

ha ha ha swedes. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BDmGrt4CYAElzV9.jpg also karlsson is really tall
