While I am wearing a silly grin this morning, I will not rejoice until we do this sort of thing in the playoffs. Now on to Nashville, who is playing the best defense in the league right now and riding a four game winning streak. Stay focused, lads.

  • Z-man19

I am still grinning over the captain’s sick move and goal. That right there was worth watching the game for.

Also have to say that I thought Hammer was really good again last night. He’s just going about his business and making it look easy.

    • DesertHawk

Got a high-five from a random older gentleman sitting in front of me on that goal.

      • Z-man19

I’m surprised that’s all he did, that was gorgeous

        • DesertHawk

The row in front of me, and the row behind me were all Hawks fans. The 200s to my left and right seemed to be predominately Hawks fans.

        • http://whatisthebestadverb.wordpress.com/ I am not Chico Maki

No cause to get profane, z.

          • Z-man19

You should see what I did to my couch

    • Paul the Fossil

I’m sure that the most talk in the locker room at my next rec league game will be about that goal. Cause there is simply no defenseman at any level of the sport who, if the player bearing down with the puck shows it out in front with only one hand on his stick on his flippin’ _backhand_, wouldn’t instinctively go for that puck. “Hah this jagoff has lost control of it — mine!”

And then for the guy to successfully on the fly pull it back and across WITH THE ONE HAND, ON HIS BACKHAND…well fuck you, is all. Just fuck you. If the puckcarriers are gonna do shit like _that_ now, well damn. Maybe it really is time to finally give up on playing around at being any sort of actual athlete and take up stamp collecting, or birdwatching, or golf.

      • Z-man19

I’ll stick to couch surfing. I’m pretty sure there are few who can do it as well as I can

        • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

I can successfully switch channels, in an instant – WITH THE ONE HAND, ON THE REMOTE.

          • Paul the Fossil

            Fucking showoff. You wanna go??

          • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

Sometimes my dog even changes the channel with the remote.

            And he’s a dog!

My border collie/dane mix puppy (talk about a high maintenance mix: smart, overactive, and big) has dews. Freaks me out.

But he can work the remote AND turn the pages of my book simultaneously. Which is nice.

          • Paul the Fossil

Hang on a second…[sound of basement door opening]…”Grimson, c’mere boy! No no, leave your Ciccarelli doll we’ll have some playtime later…drop it. I said drop — ow, goddammit! Bad boy, that finger was still healing from yesterday!”

Okay. So does your dog wanna go??

          • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

I have two dogs, so I guess one will get an instigator penalty.

          • Paul the Fossil

The third pup in, an automatic one-hour timeout.

          • Z-man19

            I’m with you PTF

      • jhb

It’s so great to see, what I think is his signature move. Starts going outside then dips his shoulder, pulls it inside and there’s no way anyone’s taking it from him. He did it all the time in 2008. Remember that Colorado goal? There was one against Detroit too.

      • laaarmer

If you play D and you fish for the puck before the gap is closed, you are going to get beat. Great move by Toews. Bad play by Olliver.

        • Paul the Fossil

Well in theory sure. But if the guy has only one hand on his stick and the puck on his backhand…that’s waving a fresh hunk of steak a foot from your drooling dog’s face while saying “stay!” Yea there are dogs trained so well that they won’t reach for it, or at least won’t always reach for it, but…just brutal.

          • laaarmer

You can’t play the puck or man from that spot unless there is a back checker coming from the inside. You cannot give the puck carrier the middle of the ice, They will score a lot if you do. If Oliver would have allowed Toews to continue to the outside there would be no discussion. Oliver fell for the fake and Toews made him pay. Fun to watch.

          • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

It was one of those “Fly right by” moves, except it was real and physically possible. Toews knew OEL was going to go for the cheese. I’m more impressed how instinctually and masterfully Toews predicted and executed the move. He probably had a .10 second window for that to work.

          • Bullitt315

That’s what I thought too. Nice play but I think Kaners assist to Bollie was the prettier play for the night.

      • cliffkoroll

And Smith just giving Toews a gaping five hole. I was like: Dude, the guy’s 50% in shoot-outs. Ever wonder why?

        • wardrums

Cheer the anthem discusses that in his channeling toews segment.

    • wardrums

Hammer – “… making it look easy.” Great description of his play this season. Man i’m gald we didn’t dump him last year

      • Z-man19

I’m thinking if Monty hadn’t still been dizzy, they probably would have shipped him. I hate it for Monty but watching Hammer play this way for someone else would have been a unpleasant.

  • Joe Banks

    FYI,
I was out running errands yesterday listening to Boers and Bernstein on Score 670 (forgive me). At about 4:05 PM, they read the last to paragraphs of McClure’s pre-game thread. They said “this guy oughta be on the show” after reading the “ugly kids learning to speak french” line.

    • Eddie_The_Eagle50

That line was pure gold, but McClure could do much better than the score.

      • Bullitt315

I actually think the 9-1 show is pretty good. But Boers and Bernstein is just terrible.

  • DesertHawk

Is Al Cimiglia a no go for morning links? I don’t think I’ve ever seen his recaps posted but he seems to have pretty level headed views. Although he doesn’t appear to have posted one for last nights game yet.

    • DesertHawk
      • http://www.facebook.com/AndrewJosephDeTolveIV Joe DelTove

Fox doesnt post of alot of his stuff till later in the morning..So I usually go back and link it when its posted.

        • DesertHawk

Ah, guess I’ve never noticed the repost, my bad. Good job with the links by the way, they’re always up and ready by the time I’m up, which is awesome.

      • Hack

I typically enjoy Al’s posts, but I think he’s the front runner for the gloss-over of the year award thus far:

“Patrick Kane scored two power play goals………and was also credited with an assist.”
And was also credited with an assist? That pass was arguably his most impressive setup of the year, and yes, I’m including the Hossa-Dallas-OT assist in that evaluation.

        • Hack

Check that; Kuc is right on his tail.

        • Accipiter

Yup. That 1/2 spin-o-rama was filthy. He tried it a few games back and it almost worked. It is an awesome progression from the full spin-o-rama, which is going to keep many D-men second and triple guessing what Kaner will do. Kaner is brilliant with the puck.

        • DesertHawk

This post in particular seemed particularly brief, I was kinda disappointed, as I got to the game about 10 minutes after it started, and missed some stuff.

        • nextgame

I literally gasped when that play happened.
Then just sat there and smiled.
That youngster sure can play hockey!

  • MySpoonIsTooBig

There are a handful of records that will be nearly impossible to break. Gretzky’s single season for sure and very likely career as well goal, assist, and point totals should stand the test of time, but Sittler’s 10 points in a single game will never come close to being touched.

    • justforkicks

Is Gagner the closest is recent history? Unfortunate for us but was 8 pts.

    • jhb

Never say never on a one game accomplishment, I say. What if someone catches lightning in a bottle, and also finds a double rainbow? It could happen.

      • laaarmer

Do I get double the gold if I find the end of a double rainbow?

        • Accipiter

No. You meet 2 leprechauns who proceed to beat you mercilessly.

          • laaarmer

            Fucking leprechauns

Sittler’s point totals in one game are untouchable? The very mediocre sam gagner put up 8 against the hawks last year.

    • Accipiter

I agree. I don’t think point totals are physically touchable. I wonder what they feel like ?

  • http://twitter.com/neo873 Neo
    • laaarmer

I like how it shows the shot totals increased as the game went on. Very Intuitive.

  • laaarmer

We had the fighting discussion yesterday, and I’m sure this was talked about in the 1st period thread.

The best part about Mayers is that he was calling to #37 from the bench. No sneaky Bertuzzi shit. No blind side. He told him to get ready and then they went at it. No winner in the fight. Not sure it did anything to the outcome. Mayers stuck up for his teammate. We got ourselves a team to watch, eh?

    • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

And it took AssHat off the ice for 5 minutes, which was always the predominant reason IMO that someone should fight him. I was hoping Mayers and Torres would both simultaneously exit the penalty box and Mayers would jump him again. And again.

      • Z-man19

I think I would have enjoyed that

  • QCBlackhawk

I put it in the DLR thread too, but this might be my favorite Toews face ever.

  • wardrums

If he wasn’t before, Smith was done after Tazer’s abuse of his 5 hole.
Anyone notice how hard our third line crashes the net?
Am I exaggerating by saying I think I could have been the hawks goalie last night?
Is anyone truly worried about Patrick Sharp?
what do you call Stal’s shot – a flicker?
We need to start a top ten things Jammer said to raffi to get him to toss the mittens off.
The fight goes to Jamaal in a split decision – largely due to the last blow to the back of the head. “Fell the pain, bitch, feel the pain.”
Nick Leddy may be the best 5th defenseman in the league.
I wish our government was half a responsible as freddy is on the back check.
    What’s out magic number?

    • Bullitt315

yes, yes, no, a goal. 38 (more) points which is exactly .500.

      • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

It’s 16. Always. Being a hockey fan sucks until it is reached.

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

That February schedule is a killer. After the six game Disney trip it’s a revolving door of the best teams in the west. Um, make that the second best teams in the west….. Am I the only one worried about Smashville ruining our goose egg in the (regulation) loss column just before the quarter pole?

    • http://whatisthebestadverb.wordpress.com/ I am not Chico Maki

I’m worried too (Dollyworld’s let in 3 goals over the last four games). But in classic blind fan mode I’ve been telling myself that it might even be better to lose … help us sort of re-boot for the home stand. Nothing like a chink in the armour to force you to re-fortify. So, lose this one, and then logic dictates that they’ll get charged up and win the next 7? Sweet, I’m telling ya, beginning the season 16-1-2.

      • DesertHawk

        I’d rather we go 17-0-2.

      • justforkicks

Um this is full on crazy talk. Team is in kill mode, they don’t need to lose to stay there and don’t ever wish for that!!!!!!!! boooooooo

    • red palace

Not so much worried, perhaps, as eager to see how the Blackhawks handle this “trap game”: that was your description somewhere, right? It’s an apt one.

  • laaarmer

How much is Nick Leddy going to get with the new CBA? He is RFA. Is there a limit on the pay increase? Holy crap is that kid fast.

    • amontesawesome

I was a little concerned about what the Hawks were going to have to pay Leddy but then PK Subban signed for 2.875 per.

      • Accipiter

PK will make $3,750,000 next year, but the 2.875 is the cap hit. It works out well for him because the next time he re-ups his contract, he can’t receive any less than $3,750,000 per year.

      • girlphoenix

PK got screwed over big time there.

        • birdhead

And the funny thing is that it could screw Montreal in the long run as well. If Subban has a good couple seasons, he comes back and wants the really big bucks and he’s eligible for arbitration and, while he’ll still be RFA, the contract will be mostly for UFA years. Maybe Stan opts for a longer-term deal. IDK. (Although I guess cap concerns could be pretty major by then.)

          • laaarmer

10 years. 9 at 1Mil, and 1 at 51mil. Fuck the CBA! It’s over before the contract runs out

    • red palace

And no matter how suddenly the puck carrier he is dogging stops, Leddy stops right with him.

  • red palace

    Dear ToS,

Great set-up by McClure for last night’s game, with several points right on target.

However, I beseech you to never again use the Johnny Cash-voiced coyote from one of my very favorite episodes to represent those desert douchenozzles. The karmic dissonance was just too painful, and I needed several extra sprinkles of quetzlzacatenango pepper on my chili dinner to get back into a proper frame of mind for the game.

Thank you for your consideration. Yours,

    red palace
