Sir Lawrence Oliver once described Hamlet as: “The tragedy of a man who could not make up his mind.” That is Shanny in a nut shell. I’d have been fine if he’d said, ‘inadvertent contact, no suspension.” I wouldn’t have agreed, but I’d have been fine with it. I’d have been fine if he’d said, “No intent to injure, but a dangerous play, here’s a hefty fine, don’t do it again. But how does he justify the salary he earns a director of player safety, by saying it was an intentional hit to the head, and levying a one game suspension? This smacks of a compromise ruling made by a man who, like Hamlet, could not make up his mind, and look at how things turned out for the young prince and the the entire Royal Danish Court at the end. Beware, King Claudius Bettman, you shall be hoist on your own petard.*

This will do nothing to stop the memes and flo charts calling Brendan Shanahan a joke, nor should it. Choose your path, Shanny, but don’t try to have it both ways.

*Bonus points to any who recognize “Hoist on his own petard,” as a quote from Hamlet.

    • Z-man19

They need to set the punishment and write it down so everyone knows what is coming. Much like every league has punishment for failing drug tests. 1st time you get this, 2nd time it’s this and 3rd time it’s this. It should be known what punishment you might expect if you hit a guy in the head and it’s determined it was intentional. Make it 2-5 games for a first time offender, 5-10 for a second offense. 15-20 for a third. Whatever it is, put it in the rule book for all to see. This random bull shit angers fans and I’m sure confuses the players. Bottom line is, no one knows what to expect and it sure doesn’t act as a deterrent.

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Everything you said, and One More Point:

When Duncs took his revenge on a Sedin (Don’t remember which, don’t care), several of us said, “There is a time and a place for revenge, but it is NOT at center ice away from the puck. Pick a moment when you can light him up and at least claim it was in the course of play.”

Duncs took his revenge at center ice, right in front of the ref, and away from the puck. Dumb. We knew it, Q knew it, Duncs knew it.

In my mind Hansen deliberately lined Hossa up, but he chose his moment when he could at least claim to be playing the puck.

This will be the unintended consequence of Shanny’s indecision. Goons will still be goons, and will be encouraged to be goons, as long as the puck is nearby. I can already hear the mouth breathers thinking, “It will be worth sitting out a game or two to put that pretty boy on his ass.”

        • laaarmer

I don’t have a problem with what Keith did. I don’t have a problem with Bollig puching a guy in the face after his centreman with a head history took a borderline hit. YES, it was a charge and YES he jumped. If Keith wants to defend himself, as they all should, he can get suspended and should be suspended for his hit, but he took care of it himself right then. Poor Sedin right? Fuck that, he tried to do the same exact thing to Keith. Nobody is messing with Keith. Why? because he will get you back and it will not be fun for you. When someone used to run guys back in the day, the way to stop them was to get your stick up. They should go back to that. Wouldn’t have helped Hossa, but it would stop some of the hits. I am not saying that they should go Bobby Clarke and 2 hand guys, but stick up for yourself, knock his teeth out, break his nose. Now, if a guy does what Hansen did and I’m Bollig, and I know my job, I’m off the bench and he is drinking out of a straw while suspended. I’ll take my time off, deservedly so, and the next time I see Hansen, I’ll do the same thing again. Should Toews fight? If he feels he should yes. Should Kane? same thing. Stick up for yourself. If they are injured by another player, clean or not, the guys who are there to take care of it need to take care of it, right then. No waiting for him to be looking the other way or 10 games later. You mess with us, we fight back, all of us.

As far as Shanahan goes, the players don’t respect his authoritah, so he is having no impact. Why has nobody brought up the fact that Hansen hit Hossa from behind?

43.3 Major Penalty – Any player who cross-checks, pushes or charges from behind an opponent who is unable to protect or defend himself, shall be assessed a major penalty. This penalty applies anywhere on the playing surface (see 43.5). 43.4 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent by checking from behind.

43.5 Game Misconduct – A game misconduct penalty must be assessed anytime a major penalty is applied for checking from behind.

I don’t think the hit deserved a match penalty, but it was a major from behind. The elbow section reads about the same. The on ice officials blew the call. Should have been two majors and a 10 minute PP for the Hawks and Hansen no longer allowed to play. One game suspension for both offenses and a trip to have his jaw wired for Hansen.

Here is some more beauty from the NHL

Rule 48 – Illegal Check to the Head

48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body check was avoidable, can be considered.

48.2 Minor Penalty – For violation of this rule, a minor penalty shall be assessed.
48.3 Major Penalty – There is no provision for a major penalty for this rule.

48.4 Game Misconduct Penalty – There is no provision for a game misconduct for this rule.
48.5 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head.
If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion

Like I said yesterday. What a clusterfuck the NHL is.

The “Check from Behind” section of the rulebook is torn out of the referee’s copy. So the referees have never seen that section. That is the only reason I can give for why that rule is never called.

I’m still pissed at Q for the Keith hit. You are responsible for your actions but Keith, obviously, “lost his mind” after the cheap shot he got from the twin. He lost it for a really long time, too. Plenty of time for a coach to sit a player and calm him down. I knew Keith was pissed just watching him on TV, how does the coach NOT know?

So instead of taking charge, Q does nothing. Results are a guy gets injured and Keith is off the ice for five games. Dumb dumb dumb.

          • justforkicks

refs also lost control of that game imo

          • Waylon

Correction – they never had control of that game from the first drop of the puck. They could’ve called at least two Nuck’s players for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 3rd period alone.

          • Black JEM

How many times had Keith already been targeted – hairpulling I think from that pussy Burrows, etc? When Sedin – my god Sedin of the formally named Sedin Sisters (I know – chill out) because they were not deemed very tough – goes head hunting – and thankfully not very well I might add – what is Q really going to say? Not much.
The refs obviously won’t call the Canucks for all the goofy shit they pull – though I loved them ringing up Kessler the other night, perhaps there is hope – so at that point you can either be the one in the quiet room or put the other guy there and take your medicine. From Keith’s perspective, it is a nobrainer, no pun intended. I would have done the same thing. The other players know what he will do. He will be safe for awhile. But next time he will have to be a little more careful but with his skating ability that should be easy for him to do.

          • http://twitter.com/neo873 Neo

I think the words “a time and a place” come to mind.

Or maybe even “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

Or maybe even “calm down, before you do something stupid, in the middle of the ice, right in front of the ref, when you aren’t in a good position which will result in somebody getting hurt and get you suspended for multiple games.” That might work. Of course, ymmv…

          • Accipiter

“Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

You can have as much of it as you want, it doesn’t have any calories.

        • Z-man19

The head should be off limits regardless of where the puck is. If the NHL made that clear, it would be much better. Take the shot that Tarasenko took last night, a shoulder right to the jaw. I don’t think there was malice there, Tarasenko just turned right into it. If you really want to get rid of the head shots, there has to be punishment on that hit and it’s probably not fair to the Avs player that made the hit, but it would send the message that you CAN”T contact the head.

    • zacked

My guess (and it is very much just a guess, and a biased one) is that Shanahan doesn’t want to be Hamlet. Based on the way he started and where he is now as DPS, I’m guessing he’s gotten leaned on by various members of the court (owners, etc) when they didn’t agree with his ruling, he went to Bettmanius or other leadership at the top of the NHL and got no support or waffling support. So since the leadership gave him just enough rope to string himself up, he’s left waffling himself. And we are Rosencrantz. Or was it Guildenstern?

      • Paul the Fossil

Get thee to a nunnery! And bring an extra bottle, those girls drink like Marines on shore leave when they get the chance.

      • http://twitter.com/neo873 Neo

This intentional stuff people keep talking about, what’s up with that? Nobody admits they intentionally gave a cheap shot. Torres claimed “it was a hockey play.” Keith did too. Players get “punished” for their actions not really for their intent.

Problem with the Hansen hit is that there are two parts to it. First Hansen makes an initial attempt at the puck. The problem is when he realizes that Hossa is going to get there first.

Now comes the second part of the play. Hansen has to go from reaching for the puck to playing Hossa and trying to deliver a check. Thing is “reaching for the puck” has him in a poor position to make a legal hit. His shoulder is up and not tucked. His arm is up and his elbow is out. So he gives a forearm shiver to the back of Hossa’s head.

And that is the rub. Did Hansen realize he could “take a shot” at Hossa? You know, Hossa who was “lighting up the Nucks?” Who knows, Hansen will never admit it if he did. So you really can’t punish Hansen for intent. All you can do is punish him for being in a bad position to make a legal hit AND for him NOT making any attempt to back off the hit.

And to me it is “how many opportunities” to “back off of a bad hit” a player has that sometimes differentiates the length of the punishment. Keith passed multiple more “stop points” on his rode to his hit than Hansen did. So I wasn’t expecting similar lengths of a suspension.

        • justforkicks

its mostly based on shanahan saying he made a fist and maliciously punched hossa in the head

        • http://whatisthebestadverb.wordpress.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Couldn’t agree more. I think it was a reckless play that never would have come close to happening in any other situation. Your description is more or less exactly how I read the play. Two games may have been warranted, but that’s sort of splitting hairs. Keith’s hit to Sedin in my opinion can’t really even be compared to this one.

  • pompoon

Blah, poor Tarasenko. I know the MO in this city is eff St. Louis, but I like that guy…

    • Joe DeTolve

As do I…I forgot who they were playing he scored five hole on one leg falling down a few weeks…Scary good

    • Joe DeTolve
      • laaarmer

That is an unnecessary play. #40 is not watching the puck. If he was watching the puck, ho would know that this does not need to be done. If Tarasenko still has the puck, go ahead and do this, but he let it go. He was being checked by another player on his team. No need for the hit. It’s stupid. Tarasenko should not have to be worried about this.

        • Z-man19

He got whacked in the back of the head with a stick around the same time Tarasenko got hit, Backes may not have been seeing straigth

        • The Doctor

I thought it was a clean hit. Unfortunate he turned his head at the last second.

          • pompoon

That was the sense I got. A clean hit, but a bummer nonetheless.

          • DesertHawk

Hit was high no matter what… Tarasenko actually stood his head up into it. So who shoulder checks above people’s heads. Dude was trying to blow him up, and succeeded probably more than he intended too. I think a big problem in the league, is “trying” to get a high light reel hit. Just hit the guy as a progression of the play, if you blow him up, awesome, don’t try and force that shit though.

      • country_bumpkin

That poor kid got crushed. I saw his eyes roll back and I thought he would be carted off the ice a la Hossa.

  • derlemke

And….hopefully we get some real answers on Hossa and his white shoes today.

    • pompoon

I believe the answer on the white shoes is that they are boss. As for Hossa, hopefully he’s gonna be okay.

  • laaarmer

10thMF. It stands for, well, you know.

    Pirri or Morin?

    • 10thMountainFire

I’d like to have Morin up here, personally. He’s been hot and he fits that fourth line well if we dress Carcillo and sit Bollig.

      • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

I don’t see any room for Morin. Who are you then going to sit, Frolik or Kruger? Plus, who’s then going to fill in on the PK?

The Hawks FINALLY – since I can’t remember how many years – have two 4th liners who can eat up PK time. And the greatest part is it is happening during a shortened season when it is most needed.

So many chips have fallen in the Hawks favor this season (knock on Bollig). No need to fix what’s far from broken.

        • Accipiter

I thought this was impressive: 2:47 – Marcus Kruger’s shorthanded time on ice per game, good for 12th-most among NHL centers. Only three teams (Winnipeg, Calgary and Minnesota) have spent less time shorthanded than the Blackhawks this season, but of those 91:21 minutes on the PK, Kruger has played in 44:39 of that time and has been a valuable piece to the Hawks’ kill.

          • ahnfire

            Frogger <3

        • Toews still makes funny faces!

Who are you going to sit?
Duh! Toews, the fucker is a goon and letting some lazy little shit from Buffalo show him up. He must go!!!! The Hawks need new young blood!!!

          • 10thMountainFire

            Toews is a goon.

        • 10thMountainFire

These are valid points. And I understand the need to have Mayers get a day off now and then but Bollig on this roster makes me want to punch walls… which is roughly what Bollig is good for, anyway.

Do you see them moving Morin, then? He still has some value and could bring something in return in the off-season.

I keep hearing that Q is “just rolling lines without regard to matchups” but in 5 years I’ve never seen such orderly grouping based on Corsi Rel QoC on BtN:

    BOLLIG

    3rd pair Dman (LEDDY, -2.073)
    3rd pair Dman (BROOKBANK, -2.533)

Even laaarmer could appreciate the pattern.

What’s interesting is that when paired with Rozy, Leddy’s relative competition rating slots with Rozsival in between the 4th and 3rd line. Q tends to roll all 3 defensive pairings with Rozsival in the lineup.

When Leddy is paired with Brookbank, they get protected and face the weakest competition. Leddy’s rating is almost smack dab in the middle, slightly shifted toward Brookbank (due to more ice time together because of Rozy’s earlier injury).

So, with Seabrook out, Q attempted to pair his #1 defenseman with his most protected one at the start of the game. Apparently, he was hoping to roll all 3 pairings and not kill Keith. But Brookbank looked horrible, and after just 3 shifts of Brookbank-Keith, Q quickly moved Rozy up instead.

    Respect the Stache.

    • laaarmer

Rozsival sucks. OK he doesn’t suck, but did I mention he is slow, ie. not fast

      Is it herringbone or seersucker?

    • cliffkoroll

interesting, but 10 of the Hawks 16 games have been on the road. Perhaps my eye test is faulty, but I don’t recall seeing as much changing on the fly in those games as in past years.

      • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

I guess there’s two sides to that coin. Yes, Q is still very much a matchup coach. No, he doesn’t find it necessary this year to yank one line off the ice if he gets a bad matchup.

And since he’s not juggling lines, statistically things fall very nicely into easily detected patterns. Which also makes it easy to hammer down which nail is sticking out. Q obviously has a soft spot for geeks.

  • Toews still makes funny faces!

Mike Milbury is a fucking idiot (mandatory upboat required), BUT I can think of ALLOT worse things he could (and has) said. It was analogy, IMO not worth really getting bent out of shape over though.

HOSS IS ON THE ICE PRACTICING! https://twitter.com/TramyersCSN/status/304635072609398784

    But razor isnt….

    • Accipiter

Best news ever. Hossa, you had me worried.
I hope Razor is just resting that hip.

      • 10thMountainFire

The last time someone hit Hossa in the head he scored two goals in the next game.

    • Waylon

Jeez, that’s great news – but I’m hoping they sit him for a least a few games. Better to be safe at this point.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

He passed the preliminary concussion protocols today, and obviously the expectation is that he’ll still be OK tomorrow. But even if he is OK, I still think it would be a good idea to give him the night off and make sure he really is 100% before he goes back out there.

    • ahnfire

Razor apparently had a family day off; he’ll be starting tomorrow.

      • 10thMountainFire

What does it say about us that we even get worried to hear that our BACK-UP netminder didn’t practice?

        • ahnfire

well, this is an extreme circumstance, since Crow has been out due to the mysterious UBI.

Also, we’re Chicago fans; everyone on our team is terrible but especially our goalies.

My friend just texted me something about Hossa’s dad saying Hoss looks to be alright and may play tomorrow night.

      Hossa’s dad is Odin right?

          • DesertHawk

Still nope. Are there any Norse Mythologic characters named Henrik or Daniel?

        • 10thMountainFire

I just took a look over at the site for those guys. I don’t know how but they’re completely in ‘victim’ mode over there. They honestly cannot understand how it is that so many fans around the league think that team is just plain dirty.

There are a couple of real ‘waaahhhs’ happening there at the moment.

          • Preacher

The NMers are ALWAYS victims! They will create a victim status if no one is supplying one. Of course, these days it’s not too hard for them since everyone actually DOES hate them and their team!

  • chosin_ghost

Hello guys, I am relatively new to the Hockey community, thanks in large part to 10th MTN Fire’s obsessive going-ons about the wonderful world of hockey. As a vet I have been following the Blackhawks due in large part to thier tribute to our great National Anthem and their work in the community and with our military Vets.
My first introduction to hockey was through the Auffrey family when I was stationed at Fort Drum, NY with the 10th Mountain. While there a family basically took me in, fed me, and made sure I was taken care of. Upon my units return from Afghanistan in 2009, Sue welcomed my mother into her home and even got up at 2a.m. to come greet me off the plane.
Today, the Auffery family is in morning and I feel the need to spread their story as far as I can. Currently, Matt Auffrey, plays in the SPHL for the Augusta Riverhawks and is their captain. Late last week Matts newborn son, Wyatt, died of SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The Riverhawks have done a great job in helping the family in mourning but I feel that a family of this caliber needs more attention. They are truely one of America’s great tight knit hockey families and I would like to pass on their story to you guys, the greatest hockey fans in the world. GO Hawks…

An admin question…I did a bit of number-crunching, out of curiosity, about team faceoff percentages and how they relate to NHL team results such as W-L records and shots per game and such. Got a couple of surprising results, at least they surprised me, and thought I’d share.

On the old system I’d have done a Fanpost, how do we do that here? Is that the intended use of the forums [I ask because it looks like nothing been's posted in there for over three months] or is there a different place to put something where people here will notice it?

    • justforkicks

      use the Forum I think

    • laaarmer

did you say faceoff %. I know I heard that.

    • laaarmer

It’s over to your right. Different login. PIA, but we’ll read it. I know I will.

    • ahnfire

like people said, put it in the forums. then I’d link it in the most recent comment thread so people notice you put something up

    • Paul the Fossil

Hmm well I just tried to post it in the forum but when I hit “submit” I get this error:

Fatal error: Call to a member function add() on a non-object in /home/thecommittee/www/www/wp-content/plugins/spam-destroyer/index.php on line 229

      • Accipiter

specifically, I’d email McClure; he’s probably the one that will know what to do.

      • 10thMountainFire

I love me some more Hossa than you.

        • http://twitter.com/hair_helmet hairhelmet

Pretty sure we all realized how much we love us some Hossa when he went down. Everyone has their favorite current Hawk but I would guess that if it’s not Hossa, Hossa is loved equally to whomever it may be.

  • Z-man19

At intermission of the dickbags/Stars game, Turco was asked about Hansen’s hit on Hossa. He didn’t blast Hansen, just said it crossed the line. He follows that with something to the effect of ‘I really didn’t like the way the Canucks management handled it, their guy made a bad play, just own up to it and move on.’ There was a bit more but I’ve already butchered it enough.

    • Accipiter

As Laaarmer stated, if the players think he crossed the line, Hansen will get his due.

      • Z-man19

We can only hope. Shockingly, Bieksa with a questionable hit on Eriksson, knee to knee

        • justforkicks

          shockingly?

Jerkets beat Scum 3-2 on a goal with :25 left in regulation.

Wings have lost five straight, four of them in OT or by one goal. And we thought Sharpie was snake bit. This is taking all the fun out of it. Come on, Scum, get good again so beating you will mean something.
