• thepuckstopshere

Crows got to have that first goal (shot) and the third goal was a poor attempt by him trying to clear the zone. Nobodys perfect.
Damn, let that greaseball AV win!
Good to see Travis do a bit better but he needs to do MORE for 4Mildo
Hockey night in Canada next, LETS GO HAWKS!

    • jordyhawk

First goal was weak and put us in the hole. He was slow post-to-post on the second and not in a strong position on the wraparound. Third was a bad giveaway at the worst possible time. Goalie loss. No big deal; let’s move on and win the next one.

      • Bannerman

Second goal was more bad luck than bad goaltending.

        • raditzzzz

trick statement. all goals are bad goaltending.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

or inadequate goaltending at the very least

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

            Science!

          • Accipiter

            Even empty netters ?

          • laaarmer

I he wasn’t behind, he wouldn’t have to be on the bench for the extra skater. He should have been better, so he could finish the game.

It’s even his fault when his own team shoots the puck into the empty net for the same reasons.

          • Beans

            Morin

          • ahnfire

            especially those.

man, it’s like the goalie wasn’t even there to stop the puck.

            so useless.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Because the goalie was over covering for Seabrook.

          • ahnfire

it’s a miracle we win any games with this roster full of flailing idiots.

          • laaarmer

I agree with this. It’s always the goalies fault, no matter what.

          • Accipiter

*It’s always Seabrook’s fault, no matter what.

          • laaarmer

1st it’s Seabrook, then it’s the goalie. I could not watch the game last night, but I assumed he was at fault for at least 2 of the goals

          • Beans

            It’s actual just huet’s fault

          • thepuckstopshere

            The man from France!

        • jordyhawk

It was a combination of bad bounce, Hjammer out of position, and CC kind of slow and not getting his stick down.

          • ChicagoNativeSon

How can you state that Crow didn’t get his stick down when the only reason the puck went in was it deflected off his stick – which was on the ice.

          • laaarmer

            How dare you!

          • jordyhawk

Down and angled toward the shooter so it would stop puck rather than deflect it into his own net.

          • M7

Paddle up, blade down when a goalie goes post-to-post towards his glove-hand side. Vice versa when a goalie pushes towards his blocker side.

          • jordyhawk

Yes, you said it better than I did. On replay CC leaves stick in the middle of the net with blade up and puck ends up going in off back of paddle.

    • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Crow has to have all three of those goals. It’s some of the ones he DID actually have that he wouldn’t have needed to have.

      • laaarmer

He could have just let in 3 different goals that he shouldn’t have had. It would have been so much moar simpo

        • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Zactly. But then it was Wednesday.

Still, whenever Crawford lets in softies that cost us the game (despite his play the rest of the game) I’m reminded of the Phoenix series. It’s disheartening.

          • laaarmer

He should have only let in 2.36 last night (actually less as last night is part of the 2.36). He let in about .70 too many goals.

          • ahnfire

            damn overachiever.

  • jordyhawk

I actually like Zus, but if we’re going to get anything from him it should be limited minutes in a reduced role. I was happy to see Kruger taking his slot and would like to see Shaw get some shifts there as well. Neither is an ideal solution but we have to come up with something.

    • Waylon

but we all know exactly what that “something” is, don’t we? I wish they’d just admit the obvious and put Zus in mostly drydock until the playoffs. I only have my amateurish eye test to go on, but I rarely see him on the screen during rushes up the ice.

    • laaarmer

Hasn’t Kane gone cold since Saad was moved by him?

      • laaarmer

        2 games. 2 whole games

        • bizarrohairhelmet

Kaner has never gone 2 complete games cold before. Aphawkalypse coming…

          • 10thMountainFire

How long until Q pushes Kane to the middle?

          • laaarmer

            5 minutes

          • lizmcneill

Q has wiped that from his brain.

          • justforkicks

That’s a mistake, it was beautiful with Hossa on his wing.

          • laaarmer

            Hossa Kane Saad
            Bickell Toews Sharp

          • birdhead

Mmmmmmhmmmmmm but the bottom 6 on that team doesn’t look so hot.

          • laaarmer

It looks the same as it does now, except Handzus for Bickell.

          • lizmcneill

Steeg and Saad are flipped too.

          • laaarmer

Oh, yeah, Versteeg. He’s playing on the Hawks. I forget about him. He can stay with Kane and leave Bickell where he is.

          • laaarmer

            So, the lines are now
            Versteeg Kane Saad
            Hossa Toews Sharp
            Bickell Kruger Shaw
            Smith Handzus Bolbanska

          • birdhead

Hang on, I liked Hossa Kane Saad. Why not Hossa Kane Saad, Versteeg Toews Sharp?

          • laaarmer

            90210

          • birdhead

Sometimes I totally get why Q likes to lineblend.

          • laaarmer

            PK
            Kruger Smith
            Toews Hossa
            Saad Sharp

            In that order!

          • birdhead

This pleases me. I wouldn’t hate Kruger-Saad either though.

          • laaarmer

            It would be Kruger Salad!

          • birdhead

Sucking Bicks and Saad both out of the b6 seems rough

            Bollig-Kruger-Smith
            Versteeg-Handzus-Shaw???

*flaps hand* IDK you do something with it. (Morin-Kruger-Versteeg, Shaw-Handzus-Smith?)

          • laaarmer

            Bickell Kruger Shaw
            Smith Handzus Bollig/Brookbank/Kostka

          • laaarmer

Versteeg has been moved with Kane

          • birdhead

I know Handzus is supposed to be defensively responsible and Smith definitely is but Smith-Handzus-Bollig, to me, would get eaten ALIVE.

Bickell-Kruger-Shaw does nothing for me but I have no argument for that, just an allergic reaction.

          • laaarmer

These are the players the Hawks have. I know, they sux, but we’ll have to deal with it

          • birdhead

meh. facts. I don’t like them. I’ll take Landeskog-Kadri-Shaw Smith-Kruger-Morin if you please.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Wait just a sec, here. You’re playing with make-believe and Kadri is the name you write down?

          • birdhead

He was the only 2C I could think of off the top of my head to be honest (I didn’t want a 1C because obviously that person would end up on the second line and my dumbass madeup roster would be incoherent). Um, there are definitely much better candidates. Mike Richards? Claude Giroux? Jordan Staal?

          • mad-hatter

            Malkin! He’s technically a 2C. Bergeron too.

          • birdhead

Yeah but this is to pair with Laaarmer’s top 6, right? If Malkin was on the team, he’s definitely playing 2C over Kane.

          • mad-hatter

then Kane can be RW again and send Steeg or Bickell or whoever it is back to the bottom six.

          • birdhead

of course, that’s why I couldn’t pick Malkin for my imaginary bottom 6. It had to be realistic! without actually being realistic!

          • mad-hatter

Who needs reality when you can have a line of Stamkos Toews and Kane!

          • birdhead

            *_*

Who’d you play Crosby with? I was gonna say Sharp and Hossa but he apparently didn’t work that well with Hossa when Hossa was a Pen.

          • Accipiter

You would have to get undrafted players like Kunitz and Dupuis.

          • birdhead

Thank you, Canadian Olympic Team Selection Committee.

          • Accipiter

Kunitz isn’t that bad of a selection. If he doesn’t play with Crosby, he can play with Getzlaf and Perry, who he has had success with in the past.

          • birdhead

I know he had literally no chance, but man it would have been interesting to see what Taylor Hall would do in that spot instead, wouldn’t it?

I mean, what happens if Crosby gets injured before the Olympics? Does Kunitz play or have you shorted yourself an extra roster spot?

          • Accipiter

I’m almost certain they would start him with Getzlaf and Perry if that happened.

          • mad-hatter

Wasn’t Hossa like always injured when he was a Pen? Might be that.

And if we’re talking only Hawks then maybe I’d flip Saad to Crosby’s RW. But it’s okay because Hossa can go play nice with Kopitar and Taylor Hall.

          • birdhead

between Kopitar and Hossa, man, the other guys would just never have the puck, ever

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

I just drooled on my shirt at the thought of Mike Richards on our second line.

          • Accipiter

What if I told you he would refuse to play centre ?

          • birdhead

Third line (which I think is where he’s been for the Kings lately anyway)! Their depth at centre is so disgusting. For a while, they had Carter and Richards on the same line, and depending on which zone they would be in, they’d take different faceoffs so whoever was taking the faceoff would be on their dominant hand. Sickening.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Jack Johnson. Unbelievable. And Holmgren, heh, another unbelievable.

          • birdhead

I’ve seen arguments that getting rid of Johnson and moving Voynov up did more for the Kings’ success post-deadline than adding Carter (although he did score the Cup-winning goal and a few others in that playoff run).

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Doubt I’d have much trouble nodding my head to an argument for either.

  • laaarmer

So, yeah, Kruger can retain possession/win faceoffs at better than 40% now. He gets to play with better players – Patrick Kane. Holy hell, a player has improved his play/is developed while the team mostly wins and potentially makes the team better. He developed while at the NHL level, rather than AHL. Huh……. Huh………
Bollig had developed too, but what if Pirri or Morin were to be getting his ice? Morin even takes more penalties. Pirri can skate and score, but needs to develop defensively, like Bollig did/does. This coud have happened in the last 40 games for Morin and Pirri playing 3rd/4th minutes, eh?

Bollig and Brookbank for prospects. Bring up Pirri or Morin. Let him play with Handzus and Smith this season. Next season Morin or Pirri joins.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

          • jordyhawk

Pirri was just selected to the AHL all star team. I believe this confirms Q’s hypothesis that he is too much offense and should seal his fate for the rest of the year.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

That also worries me, cause it tells me he’s likely not getting any bigger. Maybe 10 pounds more?

          • lizmcneill

Jokerit have him at 172 (78kg) which is a little more than the Hawks had him in training camp. He could probably end up in the mid-180s easily enough – Frogger or Bolly sort of size.

          • laaarmer

            I project 80.5kg

          • lizmcneill

Here’s a WJC roster that has him at 80Kg already (174.5lb). A touch under 5’11, but probably a good inch closer to it than Kaner is.

      • birdhead

In the article Kuc posted today (which was an interesting read about Kruger at 2C) Kruger basically said straight-up that in the SEL he was an offense-first player, so *was* he really far more defensive-minded?

        • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Minded, perhaps not, no, good point. But he was used in that way by Q, definitely, and corralled into that state of mind?

          • birdhead

He played 2C with Sharpy and Stalberg for a while, right when I started following the team, too. But I guess he’d been playing defensively before then.

Some guy named David Bolland was also an offensive dynamo in juniors. In fact, in his last season with the London Knights, he had 57 G and 130 Pts in only 59 games.

Q saw those stats and exclaimed, “That’s my shutdown guy!”

          • birdhead

I mean pretty much any NHL-level forward you go far enough back and they have amazing offensive numbers, right? (130 points in 59 games? holy …)

          • Accipiter

            Bollig ?

          • birdhead

            I said NHL-level forward, didn’t I?

          • ChicagoNativeSon

Yeah, like one good enough to be on a Stanley Cup defen…

            Oh fuck it.

          • birdhead

Wouldn’t you rather have Bolland than Bollig???

          • ChicagoNativeSon

Of course! I may be dumb but I’m not stupid.

        • lizmcneill

He may have meant he wasn’t in a defensive role I guess?

    • 10thMountainFire

No one knows if those two were capable of progressing like 52 because Morin and Pirri weren’t given the opportunities to develop at the NHL level that Bollig was given.

      Point/counterpoint. Just saying.

    By the numbers
GAA by day of the week
    Crawford/Raanta
    Mon – 1.00/1.00
    Tue – 3.32/1.80
    WED – 2.36/2.01
Thu – 3.11/0.00 (no games played)
    FRI – 0.92/2.16
    SAT – 2.31/4.36
    SUN – 2.31/1.69

Raanta can never play on Saturday
Raanta is also 4th or 5th day Adventist as he never plays on Thursday.
Crawford has to play on Friday – he’s that good.
    Both are good on Monday.
    Crawford doesn’t like Tuesdays.
Raanta likes Sundays. It must be cuddle time.

This is completely objective and clear. Good job.

      • laaarmer

        These numbers don’t lie.

        • bizarrohairhelmet

Agreed. You are one of those free-thinkers who’s not afraid to think inside the box when it’s necessary.

          • laaarmer

The good stuff is always inside the box.

Facts can’t lie. Unless you write them down wrong. Or something like that, just funnier.

    • lizmcneill

You need to get this to Q asap.

    • Accipiter

Fuck this ‘day of rest’ shit. We need to see what Raanta can do on a Thursday.

  • Accipiter

Coach Q, “We shouldn’t be looking for excuses. We shouldn’t be looking for whether we’re tired. We got enough days off. We got enough time away. You’ve got to find meaning and purpose for every game. I know that human nature some nights says that it’s tough to get excited about every game, but you’ve got to find a way when you might not have your ‘A’ game behind you or might not have your ‘A’ pace behind you.”

FYI if you want to see the best Leafs fan meltdown since Game 7 against Boston, I highly recommend twitter.com/mlse for the duration of the game they’re currently playing against the Leafs. Schaaaadenfreeeude
