  • 10thMountainFire

Did Yakupov really hit himself in the head with his own stick intentionally?

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Okay, Yakupov’s goal trumps Hossa’s goal because:

    1. The Oilers were NOT supposed to win, the Hawks were.
    2. The refs had just taken away the game tying goal.
    3. It looks like he channeled his inner Hossa and batted the puck out of mid air.
    4. Yakupov is NOT Marion Fucking Hossa, and Marion Hossa is.

    • Accipiter

The OT winner in that Oilers game was also impressive. RNH made a great pass (not behind the back mind you) to set it up. Also there was a goal in the Sabres/Canes game by Pominville that had a sweet give and go behind the back pass from Vanek. Man am I glad hockey is back.

    • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

Maybe the moment trumps. Kaner is so sick on that play and then the fucking laser-sighted slapper from Hossa is just about as good an offensive team play as you could ever want. If I were another team’s fan I would be pissed we didn’t have those guys.

  • pompoon

Is anyone else a little concerned the Edmonton press will report the Yakupov goal as “Yakupov scores game-tying goal; refuses to celebrate with teammates?”

    • Accipiter

I can’t understand why they think he refused to celebrate with his team-mates, he did, after the initial Theo Fleury knee slide celebration. The kid was pumped, the circumstances that led to that goal made it more special for him. He loves to score and at this point he hasn’t scored a bigger NHL goal (he’s 19). The part I thought was the best was the guys on the Oilers bench watching his celebration, they were amused to say the least. They mentioned that even in training camp he would celebrate goals and his assists. He’s a little over the top with his enthusiasm but I think its fun to see someone get so excited. I don’t think he was doing it to be selfish or sticking it to the other team, he was just being who he is.

      • 10thMountainFire

I think this is all inconsequential… Edmonton won. Celebration criticism is fun but also tangential.

      • pompoon

My thoughts exactly, hopefully the Edm. media reacts the same way. Or the rest of the NA media.

      • 2883

that was an awesome moment and an awesome celebration. and it was such a bullshit call to take away the goal. He was pushed into the crease on a xcheck (perhaps retaliatory but still a xcheck). Once in he got his skate hooked on Quick’s and it was outside of the blue paint…. meaning the call (that he was in the bluepaint) was incorrect. No review from Toronto just a bad decision by the on ice officials.

        • jhb

No opinion on the cross-check Gagner laid on Doughty only seconds before the waved-off goal? Maybe it was a bullshit call to make up for a bullshit non-call. Either way, it takes gusto to get it tied up with all the craziness happening.

      • wardrums

his coach jokingly said he might be watching too much soccer.

    • justforkicks

I hope not. I would hate to see his enthusiasm for the game muted down because the league doesn’t like personalities, or see him get shit on because of where he’s from. His teammates seem to find him hilarious so the media can shut up if it comes up in that way.

      • 10thMountainFire

        This.

      • pompoon

Sometimes the whole “the nail that stands up gets pounded down” (no pun intended) mentality that hangs around hockey is such a buzzkill.

        • justforkicks

agreed. i just want that kid to keep on keeping on. some of my favorite players and ones who i enjoy watching the most are the ones who so clearly love the sport and everything to do with it. just can’t understand it’d be anyone’s best interest to try to get that out.

      • DesertHawk

He really just looked like an excited kid to me, not some douche who didn’t wanna celebrate with his team… also really impressive knee slide, he went forever.

        • justforkicks

exactly. its not like it was premeditated or anything, he was just pumped. can’t fault a guy for loving what he’s doing.

      • birdhead

There was a report that he was too shy to celebrate in practice scrimmages etc and Horcoff pulled him aside and was like, kid, if it makes you happy go for it. So, pretty clearly, the team has no problem with it at all and the media concern-trolling is just that.

    • justforkicks

btw here is an article on it on PD

      • justforkicks

from what i can tell there’s only a single comment saying that moment “crossed a line.” But shit dude, first huge goal of his career, against the reigning stanley cup champs, and its not like he doesn’t know what people say about his team. he was excited – shit happens, get over it. And that goes to the LA Kings players who didn’t like it in the locker room either.

    • DesertHawk

Do they ever do that about Bollie? I mean he never celebrates, no matter how big his goal is.

      • 10thMountainFire

Bollie celebrates quietly by himself after the game with fava beans and a nice Chianti.

That’s my single favourite goal celebration in the entire league … Bolland mildly pissed, walking away from the crease like he’s just spilled mustard on his shirt.

        • DesertHawk

It’s almost like he’s thinking. “I’m the third line checking center, but sure I’ll do your job too” Not that that’s accurate anymore, I’ve liked him on the second line though.

          • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

            Uh…you think?

        • justforkicks

          Bolly scores a goal: =|
Bolly goes to the box: =D

        • detroit must die

I’m just glad he has an outlet for his insanity, I was fearful that during the lockout he was probably out in some shack somewhere, making human-skin lampshades.

    • wardrums

If he were like Toews, he would have immediately started thinking about how he would destroy the opponent in OT. Excessive emotion wastes precious enenrgy. Energy that could otherwise be channelled into helping the team win.

That being said – what a great moment for Yak and the eEdmonton fans! Grantland wrote a piece that was posted at secondcityhockey yesterday that was a great one. He talked about a bunch of players that are hard to hate in the NHL. They showed hightlights of Selanne celebrating a goal by throwing his glove up high in the air and then shooting at it like he was skeet shooting – hysterical. Might be in second place next to Tiger Williams riding the pony!

  • Paul the Fossil

After watching these clips from the LA-Edm game it’s easy to understand the over-the-top celebration for that tying goal. Quite a scene for that last minute-plus of regulation…not only had the Oilers just had the tying goal waved off in front of a packed and raving crowd. Then when play finally resumed after a near-riot, a King had the puck on his forehand with a clean look at the empty Edm net…but an Oiler blocked his shot. “NOT DEAD YET!!!” And _then_ the Oilers tied it for the second time with 4 seconds left, and then won it in the OT! Whoa. Oiler fans will be trading “were you there when…?” stories about that game until their grandkids are sick of hearing about it.
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2013/01/25/nhl-wild-oilers-kings-game/1863647/

(I actually think the refs got it wrong on the no-goal call, the Edmonton guy in the crease was at least nudged into the goalie. But it was borderline. And in any case a lot of credit to the officials for having the guts to make that call at that moment.)

    • jhb

I’m no Kings fan but not one mention of a cross-check by Gagner on Doughty seconds before the called-off goal? Maybe that’s why the refs called it back. Good on the Oilers to manage the tying goal but they really should have been shorthanded.

The picture above, of Kane leaping into Hoss’s arms, is my new favorite. Kane looks downright adorable!

Kane: “It was almost fun to watch how good he was playing” regarding Lehtonen. Nope they’re definitely not enjoying themselves right now, not at all.

  • mightymikeD

Here’s a thought to make every other coach in the West choke on their cereal: if Q gets bored with running Hossa with Toews he can hook him up with his Spin-O-Rama buddy Kane any time he wants. Enjoy your Cheerios.

    • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

Black Magic is out in filthy, filthy force right now. There is not a better setup man in the league.

      • 10thMountainFire

There was a great article on ESPN Chicago yesterday… interviewed Kaner’s coach in Switzerland and he was glowing about Kane not only as a player (was leading the league in points when the NHL kick-started) but as a leader. Good stuff.

        • mightymikeD

          boy’s becoming a man.. I like it.

          • 10thMountainFire

The rest of the league… hates it.

          • mightymikeD

and we know what they can go and do to themselves, don’t we?

          • 10thMountainFire

They can do it to themselves or Kaner can do it… city by city!

          • wardrums

I say we dump him now why we can get something for him; is ryan Miller still available?

        • justforkicks

why you no put up link?!

    • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

Most teams would love to have 2 of the league’s most talented (still young) forwards on their top line. The Hawks have 4 of the league’s top forwards on 2 lines, and 2 of the best defensive centers (+ Hossa) on those lines to boot. Oh, the 2-way potential.

Plus, the defensive corps is as deep as any in the league, and IMO is finally geared with the personnel to play the Hawks style of game, from top to bottom.

      Annnnd they have two goaltenders…

      • Mohel

Can both goalies play at once? I keed, I keed….

  • The Doctor

Loving these awesome Kaner hockey hugs. Keep them coming, Kane.

  • laaarmer

    Hey Cliff,
Lets chat about Maslow, Newton, and Karma. Are they not the same concept?

    • cliffkoroll

Good question. The answer is no, but they are orthogonal to one another.

What was Seabrook up to during the lock-out?

      • laaarmer

He was thinking about how to become the best hockey player possible and move to the next level of hockey consciousness.

        • cliffkoroll

When he gets there, he should say hi to Keith.

And not Keith Mothefucking Stone either.

          • laaarmer

I believe we are all having premature Keithjaculations. He is playing well, and it’s obvious his legs are not tired. When Seabs gets his mind back to speed, Keith will be even better.

          • detroit must die

Seabs has been atrocious thus far, but I expect that to change.

          • Accipiter

Keith has a nice set of lungs on him too.

          • cliffkoroll

The problem with reporting on Keith is that a game like the other night was ‘dog bites man’ not ‘man bites dog’, savvy? So it doesn’t get much mention- ho-hum.

Premature my aunt fanny- I ain’t talking about four games, I’m talking about 616 games and counting. Most of ‘em anyway.

Your oh so prudent ‘let’s wait and see’ attitude is noted however.

          • cliffkoroll

And don’t get me wrong- Seabs is awesome and crucial and he’s gonna be just fine, and it’s still prolly the top pairing in the league.

      • laaarmer

Are you saying I’m an elephant?

      • Joe Banks

    Random thoughts:
Hjarmal’s continues to be a defensive force out there.
Admit it, Crawford’s not as bad as a lot of you thought.
saad looks to be a permanent fixture on the 1981 line
scratch that, there is no such thing as a permanent fixture on a coach Q team
Kaner would have had 10 more points last year if guys could have finished his set ups.
Did I actually see Toews do a fist pump after his tally.
anyone besodes me liking 16 nd 67 on the penalty kill.
As far as faceoffs against toews go, shouldn’t the other team just admit it’s your out?
What is Coach Q writing on his note pad after we get scored against?
Is Nick Leddy about 20% better than last year?
Mayers vs Bollig = a wash?
stalberg is hanging on to the puck a lot more – he ewants to create – good idea with his speed.
Kruger and frolik seem to like each other.

    • 10thMountainFire

Agreed on all but ‘Mayers vs Bollig = a wash’. No way. Mayers is a decent fourth-line centerman… can win you face-offs and has enough ‘toughness’ to mitigate any ‘usefulness’ of Bollig.

    • amontesawesome

It’s been three games. Crawford has played one bad game, one good game, and one average game. I’m not quite ready to make any grand pronouncements yet.

      • 10thMountainFire

        Which game was bad? LA?

      • Joe Banks

Where was this bad game you speak of?

        • amontesawesome

          What 10thMountainFire said below. LA.

If you would choose to label the game as below average instead of bad, I wouldn’t quarrel with you too much.

    • ahnfire

I am an unabashed fan of Dream Warrior/Frogger/Kruger/16 so yes. I was surprised by Frobrows on the PK, but it works.

I think Mayers vs Bollig could be a wash, but I still prefer Mayers because I think he picks his spots better.

I am loving my NHL game center live. I know I’m giving them money, but I could not watch another shitty feed, so I bought last night. Watched on the Xbox in HD. It was fucking awesome. Even my wife watched the OT with me. Best thing I bought yet. $44.99

    • 10thMountainFire

I refuse to apologize for spending money on the NHL this season. I don’t think the CBA problems had anything to do with us as fans. Fans who bitch are simply putting themselves at the center of the dispute and making themselves victims.

I am happy to purchase NHL and Hawks shit because… I love the NHL and the Hawks.

      • laaarmer

The game was awesome on the Xbox, especially after I figured out how to get the away feed. Fucking awesome.

        • 10thMountainFire

I am going to have to purchase that… I may be moving eastward soon.

    • Accipiter

Is game centre live the one that lets you watch the games whenever you want after they have aired ?

      • laaarmer

I watched last nights game again today. I don’t know if you can watch them forever, but last nights games are still on.

        • Accipiter

I am considering getting it. It is frustrating watching some of the other totally legal feeds.

          • laaarmer

Do it. You can watch on phone, pc (shitty picture), or any number of devises. I had my phone, my pc, and the xbox all running the game last night. I also had Phoenix on at the same time as the Hawks with the Xbox.

          • http://twitter.com/VULTR3 Mike

I’ve used GCL for the past two seasons, and have been very pleased with it. The only thing is, I’m way out of market for the hawks, so I can watch all the games that aren’t nationally broadcast. This service is probably useless for fans in market who want to watch the hawks.

The blackout thing is gonna be around for a while unfortunately, I wish that would change soon.

          • Accipiter

            Done did it. Pretty cool.

        • Z-man19

So you can watch any game, there’s no blackout bullshit depending on what market you live in?

          • laaarmer

The Hawks will be blacked out in Chicago area. In my area The Wings will be blacked out. But what the fuck do we care if The Hawks are blacked out Gamecenter if they are on TV? Not sure about the playoffs.

          • Z-man19

I’m in some kind of no man’s land. I can normally get the hawks if they are on CSN. Occasionally I can’t because I’m getting the Blues feed if they are playing at home and the hawks are on CSN plus. I could see me not being able to get the hawks on Gamecenter or TV on certain nights.

        • stacie7

You can watch games from the vault quite a few years back any time you want. Also the games that are blacked out because you are in their viewing area are available the next day. You also have the ability to watch whatever team’s feed you want.
