Re the Leddy article: Aren’t ALL the D men pinching and joining the rush more often?

  • Z-man19

I’m not fine with Saad getting less TOI, dude needs to play more

    • Bob Lanz

Yep, maybe swap steeger and saad for a few games ehh?

  • laaarmer

    Jack Skille,
    OR
Anze Kopitar, Tukka Rask, Marc Staal, Devin Setoguchi, Martin Hanzal, or TJ Oshie?

    I don’t know, you decide.

They did steal Hjammer later, but jeebus.

    • lizmcneill

A Rask/Raanta goaltending tandem would be the most hilarious thing ever. I can just imagine Raanta happily giving Rask tips on how to break a stick while Rask curses in Finnish.

If they’d had Rask they probably don’t sign Nemo, and Rask ousts Huey in the same way in 09/10. Because he’s younger and can’t go to arbitration, they sign him for about the same as they did Sparkle Motion and you have a Rask/Crawford tandem in 10/11. Crow probably ends up getting traded for a chance at a starter’s job elsewhere (Florida so we still end up with Fro), and Rask probably causes a bit of a cap hell this season or last.

      • laaarmer

Kopitar only makes 7.5. 7.5 for a 2C ain’t too bad with the cap going to 100 mil soon

But seriously, that was a brutal draft for CHI, no?

        • laaarmer

          cap hit 6.8

        • lizmcneill

Does Kopi get 7.5 if he’s behind Toews, even? I think he probably gets a Keith-esque deal of 5-6M and all of the years. Plus, if you have a young 2-way beast like Kopitar, do you feel the need to get Hossa?

          • laaarmer

I don’t know, but it would be nice to have to decide. Kopitar is considerably younger, so …….. I don’t know……2 cups so far with Hossa…………mmmmmmmm Kopitar.

          • lizmcneill

            A top 6 of
            Sharp-Toews-Kane
            Saad-Kopitar-whocares

            looks pretty sweet.

          • laaarmer

            Hossa

            all the players!

          • lizmcneill

Havlat’s expodey groin…..nah, would be Mo or someone by this time, with a defensively responsible legit top-line center you could carry a not-so-great-on-d winger. (see: DDN before Kaner discovered backchecking)

          • laaarmer

            Bickell

          • laaarmer

            Versteeg

          • laaarmer

            Neal

          • bizarrohairhelmet

With all those years you get increased defensive skills and the way those are rubbing off on the other players lately, I still like Hossa over Kopa.

        • lizmcneill

All of Dale’s drafts were pretty poor. 2008 was just Smitty, I think. 2009 was ok – Frogger and Pirri, half of Steeg 2.0. 2006 and 2007 were barren wildernesses but for the wonder boys. Could be worse though, could have ended up with EJ and Turris.

    • 10thMountainFire

      Great post here.

By the way… re your comment about Cutler leaving of his own choosing… yes. And i don’t blame him. Bears fans have been unfair to him and he deserves better than the constant unwarranted criticism he gets here. Most of the time, I’m embarrassed by what is coming out of the mouths of many Bears fans. Cutler is a pain sometimes. But much of the criticism is just plain stupid.

      • laaarmer

If I was Cutler, I would go somewhere else, although where else is he going to have those receivers and running back on a team looking for a starter?. I am not a fan, but he is the most talented Bears QB since Vince Evans. I kid. The guy can play very well at times.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

This much we can say for sure – Cutler is not the reason the Bears lost to the Packers last night and finished outside of the playoffs. When you don’t turn the ball over (the fumble was obviously all on Alshon Jeffrey, and you can’t exactly blame the QB for a last-play hail mary getting picked) and get into the endzone 4 times you should win every single time. Worst Bears team defense I’ve seen in my entire life this year, and that includes some pretty all-around putrid Bears teams from the 1990′s.

        /end Bears rant

        • laaarmer

’70′s bears and packers were tough to watch

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

That was a bit before my time. I was born in the 80′s so it’s still accurate per the qualifier “..I’ve seen in my entire life”

          • laaarmer

Yes, but I suffered through two of my favorites being horrible for almost my entire youth. I don’t remember Lombardi, Neil Armstrong doesn’t count, the 1982 Packers, who remembers them?

            Until Ditka and Favre.

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

Damnit laaarmer, we’re talking about MY lifetime here, quit being so selfish.

Give up, the Hawks season is over, they lost a game again. It is time to dwell on the Bears lost season and joke of a Cubs season that is around the corner.

      • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews still makes funny faces!

Cutler was not the reason the Bears lost. 4&1, 4&1 and 4&8 were the main reason the Bears ended up losing. The NFC North was putrid this year.

So is Rockford about to have both LeBlanc and LaBarbera? (Jason LaBarbera’s Leblanc.com)

    • laaarmer

      Le skunk de pew

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

When Crow comes back, the question is whether the ‘Hawks brass thinks that Raanta Claus can continue to properly develop while only playing every 4th or 5th game as the backup, or whether he needs to be playing almost every night as the starter. If they’re OK with developing him with only backup minutes then yeah, Rockford is about to have both LeBlanc and LaBarbera, but if they think he’s got to start (which I think is the more likely scenario) then he’ll go back down to Rockford and LaBarbera will stay on as Corey’s backup for now

      • lizmcneill

Does Raanta go to the Rock to get playing time during the Olympic break?

        • MySpoonIsTooBig

I would definitely assume so. Even if the ‘Hawks do send LaBarbera to Rockford and keep Raanta as Crow’s backup, there’s no reason not to have Raanta playing in Rockford during the Olympic break. He doesn’t have to clear waivers so there’s no worry about losing him, he’s definitely not going to Sochi as the Finns are stacked at the position, and he’s not going to really need the time off to rest or anything…

      • raditzzzz

i’m curious as to what the philosophy is with raanta now. i mean, was the plan to give raanta a year in the minors so that he could become the new backup for next season, or is he supposedly being groomed to take over for crow in the future?

i mean, if he is supposed to come in as the backup for next year, then it seems to me there is no real point in sending him back down if he’s only going to be in that role of playing every 4th/5th game just delayed by a year. he’s shown he can play in the league already, and if his role is to be a backup and compete with crawford for the top spot, then labarbera just looks like veteran insurance should crow or raanta get injured, and could easily chill in rockford. all of that is said without acknowledging the existence of khabibulin.

        • MySpoonIsTooBig

I’m right there with you, I have no idea what the thinking is. I’m also right there with you in pretending that Khabibulin doesn’t exist, because for all intents and purposes he doesn’t…

  • 10thMountainFire

Raanta in net, Rozy sixth blue liner per the Twitterverse.

  • VanDorp’sMullet

Schwartz and Frasier both canned. We can only hope that the Viks and Lions keep hiring incompetent coaches to run their franchises.

In related news, WHY DOES MEL TUCKER STILL HAVE A JOB?

    • bizarrohairhelmet

In related opinions: football? On a hockey blog?

      • VanDorp’sMullet

Ok, I’ll stop the Bears talk here.

        • laaarmer

There should be an assist stat in football

          • 10thMountainFire

There is. It’s called a completion.

          • laaarmer

No, what about the blocks that are made to allow the pass to be thrown and the catch to be completed?
            Or the decoy pass route?

          • 10thMountainFire

            There’s an app for that.

          • 10thMountainFire

And I agree. That would be a solid innovation for some statistical madman. Sort of like Corsi for football?

          • VerStig

Doesn’t that mean that in hockey there should be a stat for screening the goalie but not getting the assist?

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

Based on what’s been said / reported about the teams confidence in Mel Tucker, I don’t think he’s going anywhere (right now). It’s unfortunate, yes the defense was hit particularly bad by the injury bug so I understand the sentiment that it would be unfair to blame him entirely, but the level to which that defense sank this year was pathetic. It’s the coaching staff’s job to come up with schemes and strategies to maximize the strengths of the players they have at their disposal, and in that regard Mel Tucker failed horribly.

  • MySpoonIsTooBig

Tweeted by Tracy Myers a few minutes ago:
Q on Raanta going forward: “He’s earned the opportunity to be around. We’ll make that decision (when Crawford returns).” #Blackhawks

To me, that seems a pretty clear indication that the team plans on keeping Raanta is Crawford’s backup, sending LaBarbera back down to Rockford, and hoping/assuming that Khabibulin never sobers up

    • VanDorp’sMullet

The only argument I can see against keeping him as the back-up is if they want him starting on a nightly basis to develop him. But in terms of both production and talent, he’s head and shoulders above Khabi (at this point in his career). Oh… I guess a 2ndary argument would be salary cap issues though I’d imagine Stan could maneuver around those.

    • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews still makes funny faces!

I am okay with this. Raanta is going to get more starts than Khabbicantstopthepucksfromgoingin will ever get. It will allow Crow to rest and let Raanta to develop more at NHL speed.

      • special_agent_dale_cooper

exactly…and during the Olympic break send him to the AHL and let him play for those two weeks as much as possible…

  • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews still makes funny faces!

Patrick Roy seriously tried to push off some of the blame on a 7-2 beat down on a 1 hour time zone change????? For fucking Real????
So instead of getting up an hour early taking an early flight to get an early skate in after three days off on a game day, they opt for later flight, take naps and get no pre-warm up team skate resulting in getting just totally destroyed in the game and then complain about it like a little shit and get your players to echo it (or even allow them to)?
    SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!

          • lizmcneill

Yeah, he doesn’t mention that his team has a built-in advantage in home games because they’re used to playing halfway to Low Earth Orbit.

    • Hawkeytalk

Roy is the new whiny AV. There’s another point in the argument that the Avs now are the second most loathed team by the Hawks fan base.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

It depends on how well the Hawks played in their last game. For now, Avs would be the 3rd most loathed team by Hawks fan base, behind the Blues and whomever the Blues beat last.

        • lizmcneill

Avs have out-scummed Scum and are gaining rapidly on Sea Scum. River Scum still the scummiest, though.

        • Hawkeytalk

So the Hawks fan base hate the Hawks now?? Self loathing isn’t healthy, lol.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

That’s actually what I meant but now I am remembering the Blues beat the Stars in OT last night.

          • Hawkeytalk

Ha, I just assumed they hadn’t played. I did see that the Avs played and lost 2-1 in OT to Winnipeg last night. At home. Wonder why that was, PR?

          -
          * The Nashville Predators Ice Hockey Club makes no direct claim to what this goal is at this time, but reserves the right to designate it as one or a combination of the following; the Clubs Goals For Per Game Average; The amount of Blackhawks fans (1) allowed into the Bridgestone Arena; the Average loss differential; the Average game attendance over the course of a season (1); The amount of goals scored by the Clubs Leading scorer. The Nashville Predators and Bridgestone Arena make no promise of attempting to field a competitive team or to make for a fan friendly environment because we honestly have no fucking clue what the hell we are doing in either realm, in fact we just learned this morning they were serious when they call “ICE” Hockey, we thought people we joking they actually played on ice.
