If they did it all way the hell out in the desert in December it would be awesome and logistical clusterfuck…Just like moving 30 miles outside a nontraditional hockey city that is hard to get to

Watch out for that anvil above your head!

    • rhodes

Maybe they plan on playing on a 4000ft platform.

      • 10thMountainFire

It was -9 in Flagstaff yesterday.

        • rhodes

There you go. High desert. Problem solved.

  • JB

There was a lot of “core” talk yesterday. Who is “core”? Who is “core-lite”? My question is… has any one of the “core” fallen out of the “core”? Also, that’s a great pic of Rantaa! Thanks… I will hang up and listen.

    • 10thMountainFire

All this talk about Core has left me feeling Dead and Bloated.

      • Joe Banks

        No more core talk! Aiiieee!!!

    • Preacher

      Core: Toews, Kane, Keith. (Untouchable)
Hossa, Sharp, Saad. (Tradeable in perfect/dire situation–or old age)
Seabrook, Crawford, Bickell. (Tradeable if production drops consistently–see Bolland, Dave for precedent)

I’m viewing this from Stan’s eyes, which doesn’t allow for sentimentality to influence the decision (again, see Bolland), and looks strictly at production value vs. contract cost. Also, I believe Stan is more likely to stay with players he’s invested in–that’s why Bickell is on the list.

  • Joe Banks

OK, Raanta will be backed up by Simpson tonight… If Crow is out indefinitely, who backs up Mac Carruth in Rockford? (Hogs next game on Friday)

    • lizmcneill

EBUG? Or sign the nearest ECHL goalie to a PTO?

      • raditzzzz

i think this will be fascinating to watch play out. after poking around a bit, a pto to an echl goalie seems logical, as they get 25 games of eligibility and you would hope the injury bug is over by that time. i have no clue what the availability/process for that is, tho.

probably an ebug until they can locate/sign someone to a pto, and then once they don’t need them, they get shipped back to the echl.

seems kinda bogus the ahl can’t call up a junior hockey player in a pinch like this, especially if they were drafted by the parent nhl team. i mean, you can’t simply roll with one goaltender, and the prospect of a true amateur as an ebug vs. a “professional” amateur in juniors seems like an easy decision to make. notwithstanding the prospect of having to locate, sign and then dump an echl goalie.

        • lizmcneill

It’s the NHL/CHL agreement. The CHL/Hockey Canada don’t want every drafted 18-19 yo player assigned to the minors. It would be pretty damaging to the CHL as a developmental league if that was allowed. (Plus a teenage goalie isn’t going to do much of anything in a man’s league)

    • Korab22

Lance, the resident 8 year old, has developed into one of the better goalies at our Sunday Inline game. He deserves a shot. I’m confident he can make the switch from gym shoes on concrete to blades of steel on ice.

    • raditzzzz

brandon whitney (qmjhl), then matt tomkins(ajhl) are next on the depth chart (in that order) per the goalie guild dec 2nd depth chart.

      • Joe Banks

Can they pull them out of Juniors?
Isn’t Matt Tomkins at Ohio State?

        • lizmcneill

I think only the NHL team can pull them from Juniors and it has to be a roster emergency (don’t have 2 healthy goalies under contract).

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

I think that you’re right that an emergency call-up from juniors would have to be to the NHL team, not to the AHL team, but I don’t think it’s necessary for there to be literally no one else that a team can dress in order to qualify for an emergency call-up. I think if you just have a glut of injuries to show cause. For example, Sven Baertschi played 5 games for the Flames in 2011-’12 as an emergency call-up, I’m sure that there were other skaters available in the AHL that the Flames technically could have called up instead, but the number of players out injured meant that several fill-ins were already in place and Baertschi was significantly further head on the depth chart than anyone else they could have called up.

  • jordyhawk

We are 21-6-5. They are 14-9-5 in fifth place (i.e. only 3 more losses). Still pretty tight.

  • justforkicks

This made my day (for now until the hawks win tonight of course):

    Kane and Toews face off
Off the ice, there’s no neutral zone for Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews

    • laaarmer

Toews: Which teammate would you let date one of your sisters?
Kane: A couple of years ago I might have said you.
      Toews: But not anymore?
Kane: Not anymore. There are some guys you definitely would not want dating your sister — especially hockey players. I’d have to go with Nick Leddy though. He’s the nicest guy in the world.
      Toews: Nicest ever.
Kane: He’s a really nice, shy kid.
Toews: He’s undercover, though. Be careful with that.

Poor Leddy. He gets abused not just by opponents, but his own.

      • lizmcneill

I think those two think verbal abuse is a form of expressing affection.

    • ahnfire

Tazer, what is your face in that article photo.

      • lizmcneill

Kaner’s is not much better – he looks delighted to get to bug Toews. Who picked that picture? Surely by now everyone knows they are not fit to be left with each other.

        • ahnfire

it’s so perfect though. ahaha I like our guys.

          • justforkicks

I just like how they are so matter of fact about their shenanigans. Like it would have been worse if they were on the same team at the Olympics, and we already know its true because of how nuts they are on the hawks. But no big.

          • lizmcneill

            The NHL’s Odd Couple, lmao.

Yeah, I can just see them traumatising a whole national team by screaming at each other on the bench. At least the Hawks rookies can be sent to the Rock and get it in small doses.

          • ahnfire

meanwhile, Sharpy breaks out the popcorn and laughs and laughs and laughs…

          • justforkicks

i watched that clip from the convention so many times. so hilarious. stalberg played it off, but there was an article when he was first put on the line with them about how he was nervous all the time because both kept yelling at him, until one of the vets told him to just ignore it, thats just how they are.

          • laaarmer

Stalberg was way out of his league with them, both physically and mentally

          • justforkicks

sure, but coming newly to the team, and having those two guys screaming at you and each other probably doesn’t help.

          • laaarmer

            Probably not.
I’m sure they gave Bickell and Saad all kinds of shit too. Bickell seems to not handle it as well and Sadd just goes harder because of it, even if he is a lost cause.

          • justforkicks

Yeah i think Saad is just a sponge, takes it all in the way its meant.

          • laaarmer

            OR
            He just thinks
“fuck you Kaner watch this. Can you do that?”
            and
“Oh you’re not going to get that puck Toews, OK then, watch this you lazy fuck”
“Oh OK, so now I get to play with someone else? Fuck you two then, watch this.”

          • justforkicks

that is also very true and very probably. His jersey number was #43 for a while for a reason.

          • lizmcneill

A nice thirst to prove himself. Bless the Manchild.

          • ChicagoNativeSon

If I remember correctly, wasn’t Stalberg nervous because Kane and Toews were constantly yelling at each other, not him?

          • laaarmer

            He’s a fragile young man.

          • justforkicks

I honestly thought the article said they were yelling at him along with each other, versus the convention where it was just yelling at each other. Not sure now =/

          • 10thMountainFire

I remember a Hossa clip where they discussed 81, 19, and 88 playing together and Hossa said something to the effect of ‘Toews wants the puck, Kane wants the puck, they’re always yelling at me to give them the puck but there is only one puck.’

          • lizmcneill

MARIAN’S PUCK. SIMMER DOWN, FOOLISH YOUNGSTERS.

          • 10thMountainFire

I remember there being an interview asking everyone who the funniest Hawk was and Kaner said ‘Hossa because everything sounds funny when it’s said with a Slovakian accent.’

          • justforkicks

he also said he was “undercover funny”

          • 10thMountainFire

So I just Googled it looking for the quote and typed in ‘Patrick Kane and under…’. Google thinks I want to see Patrick Kane in his underwear.

          • justforkicks

I mean, search what you want, judgement free zone, but let me help you out:

“I wouldn’t say he’s quiet. He’s really witty and smart with his chirps and making fun of people. He’s undercover funny,” Patrick Kane told NHL.com. “But he’s great for the locker room. He always seems to be in a great mood and is never complaining about anything. When you see a guy that successful do that, it kind of weighs on you a little bit.”

          • 10thMountainFire

I’m a researching God. It irks me that I had to rely on you to get that for me. I’m ashamed of myself.

          • justforkicks

i literally googled “hossa undercover funny”

          • 10thMountainFire

I did as well. Truth be told, I was looking for the entire article where I had originally seen the quote. There were some gems with Crawford making fun of Bickell, etc.

          • justforkicks

did you find it? i can link it for you…

          • 10thMountainFire

Yeah, I found the Kane quote. Still looking for the thread of funny Hawks stuff that I saw in late 2010.

          • justforkicks

oh, well you should share that when you find it!

          • 10thMountainFire

A friend of mine sent it to me originally. If she and I didn’t correspond so much, I’d just dig through my Gmail. But she and I have thousands of emails so that won’t work.

I will win this. I will beat Google.

          • justforkicks

            i believe!!!

          • 10thMountainFire

          • justforkicks

you are a magician. i can’t find shit i emailed a week ago most of the time

          • 10thMountainFire

            She pasted some good ones:

Tazer answering a question about losing faceoffs: ‘It’s frustrating when you lose 3, 4, 5 faceoffs in a row. First of all, you have to go out there and chase the puck. Then, you got Kaner over on the right wing whining about it. It’s a lose/lose situation.’

          • 10thMountainFire

Q to Crawford: “What do you do to keep in shape?”
Kane: “Why are you asking him?”

          • 10thMountainFire

(Young girl goes up to Kane and says, ‘Will you be my prom date when I go to high school?’)
Crawford: ‘Hey… you don’t want to take him.’

          • 10thMountainFire

Toews: “I had to go out back and hop in a cab”
Rob Johnson: “you took a taxi?”
Toews: “ok it was a limo”

          • 10thMountainFire

Seabs on Vancouver going to the Finals:
“I became a Nashville fan, a San Jose fan, a big Boston fan… because they doesn’t deserve to win the Cup”

seabs was basically every hawks fan during that series.

          • 10thMountainFire

Question to Toews if he really has a pair of jorts,

Toews: “someone said I have a pair?”
Sharp: “he couldn’t fit his ass in jorts”

          • lizmcneill

FORESHADOWING. Feel shame, Kaner, feel shame!

          • justforkicks

omg i totally remember that quote. i love it

          • 10thMountainFire

Sharp on living with new roommate after Burish: ‘I was roommates with Seabs a couple of games and I just hoped to survive those days.’

          • 10thMountainFire

These are just awesome. I owe this woman dinner the next time I see her.

Toews: “some nights things just don’t go right (re faceoffs) and then you got Kaner in the faceoff and it all just goes horribly wrong.”

          • justforkicks

these are so fantastic. glad i’m working from home today, i’m basically cackling reading these.

          • 10thMountainFire

I’m laughing even reading the email again. I owe that woman big for this. I was deployed and she used to email me Hawks stuff to keep me entertained.

      • lizmcneill

They have gotten very slick and professional in interviews these days – you used to get more, especially from Kaner. One interesting thing was the article verbiage calls Kaner “brash”, but Toews mentions the character trait that has carried through from Kaner’s childhood is that he’s “quiet but confident”.

My favorite line, from Kane: “Winnipeg was a cool place to play. We heard going in that fans there like to boo the other team’s top players, so a few times when I had the puck I held on to it a little longer to hear the boos get louder.”

      • justforkicks

I liked the whole thing, but that was definitely one of my favorite lines as well. oh kaner.

    • Paul the Fossil

Found that October 2007 6-4 win in Toronto that they talk about. Savvy was the coach. Keith and Sharp were among the goal scorers.

“First-line center Jonathan Toews, 19, earned one assist and first-line winger Patrick Kane, 18, got two. They didn’t score goals, but their speed, agility and craftiness set the tone, and their older teammates followed.

“Their will is so huge and you can’t teach that,” Savard said. “They’re great players but, more important, their will is huge.” “

      • laaarmer

“Their will is huge” classic Savard

Not unlike the moniker of this here place.

      • justforkicks

      • birdhead

doesn’t it blow your mind that they still remember, not just the score of that game, but how many points *each other* had? I guess it was a memorable game but I would have thought that kind of detail would long be lost to the mists of time.

        • justforkicks

i knowwwwwwwwwwww. kane still remembers (or at least did a few years ago), Toews shootout goals at Worlds (or something). Its insane. I love it.

For Tazer as a Winnipeg lad, being on Hockey Night In Canada for the first time would have been a Big Hairy Deal. Not sure there is a comparable thing in the U.S. anymore, like the Tonight Show or Ed Sullivan used to be, the whole country watching.

          • laaarmer

No, this is how you tighten up the defensive effort, not unlike Niemi.

          • justforkicks

            gotcha.

      • steeg of their own

Maybe I’m being optimistic, but we can play nine games with Raanta and be okay. Think of it as a surrogate for the Circus trip, since the Circus trip didn’t hit us as hard as it usually does. This is a thing the Hawks can handle, and maybe even a thing they needed to force them to buckle down on defense and play the hell out of every 60 minutes they get.

It won’t be easy, but this is a surmountable problem, and this team can surmount it. If that means that they have to learn to play tighter hockey than they’ve been playing, well, that’s only a good thing.

Obviously, no one would have chosen this. But there are tangible goods that can come from it, and I have faith that the Hawks are in a position to capitalize.

        • justforkicks

i think the hawks will be ok overall, but holy nervewracking. not a position i thought the team would be in for sure

            Or a starter.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

I was just joking (har har) that their backup has been better than the starter. I want that too.

          • Accipiter

I would take Scribbles on the Hawks.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Over Crow?

          • Accipiter

            Sure.

          • 10thMountainFire

Are you speaking about cap hits, too or strictly on talent?

          • Accipiter

            Both.

          • 10thMountainFire

A guy with less than 50 games? You’d take him over crow for a streak of about 15 games?

          • Accipiter

Maybe. I’d like to see Raanta steal Crows job from him.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Is this a contract thing?

          • Accipiter

It might help Crow stop more pucks if he has competition. I don’t really like the contract, but that is another story.

          • 10thMountainFire

I just don’t know how Scriven rates, though. His sample size is Mason-small.

          • lizmcneill

watch out for DH, he will eject you from the treehouse with extreme prejudice. Raanta’s so green though, I think Crow is safe for a few years.

          • lizmcneill

Quick is broken also. Do they go back to the old pads because it’s too damaging to goalies, or do we just accept that sometimes goals will be scored 5-hole? (Captain will like that)

          • 10thMountainFire

A buddy of mine is a huge LA fan and I talked to him about Scrivens. He said the franchise is in love with the guy. He isn’t going anywhere.

            Makes you wonder about Quick.

          • lizmcneill

Quick’s signed for 8 more years at 5.8, IIRC. Was it Scrivens whose team said he was quite happy to be a career backup when he was traded? Cushy for LA if that’s the case.

        • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Will we see Simpson a couple of times, I wonder?

          • 10thMountainFire

            Q says ‘no’.

          • lizmcneill

Please do not break this goalie, Q, he’s the last one we’ve got. No one wants to see Carruth on an NHL bench this year.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Get dat Emerys guy.

          • lizmcneill

I’m guessing that as it’s a matter of weeks rather than months that Stan won’t make a move for a cheap backup?

          • 10thMountainFire

I figured that as well. I was hoping to take advantage of Philadelphia’s awful planning to take their goaltender.

          • lizmcneill

Well, Mason is apparently (deserving to get paid like) the second coming of Carey Price, if you listen to his agent, so who needs Emery?

Did we draft Skille over Price? Hollow laff.

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

Actually no. Price was already off the board, going 5th to the Canadiens, in 2005 before the ‘Hawks took Skille 7th. Don’t worry though, that year the ‘Hawks did pass over Anze Kopitar (11th to LA), Marc Staal (12th to NYR), and Tuukka Rask (21st to TOR)

          • laaarmer

            Kopitar……

          • Accipiter

            #IsHeGood

          • laaarmer

            I’ve heard he can play
            #rumorhasit

          • lizmcneill

Moar hollo laff. Toews-Kopitar down the middle, or Staal in the d-corps…bbRask and bbCrow would have been the Goalie Odd Couple in the Rock (no, Tuukka, this is how to break a stick), but you wouldn’t have kept Crow in that case.

Mind you, lolLeafs did then trade Rask for Andrew Raycroft.

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

For what it’s worth, since everybody passed over them at least once I didn’t bother listing other notable 2005 draft picks who went later than the 1st round and turned out way better than Skille. Other players that were on the board when the ‘Hawks too Skille include James “The Knee” Neal (33rd to DAL), Paul Stastny (44th to COL, 1 pick after the ‘Hawks took Michael Blunden), Jonathan Quick (72nd to LAK, 4 picks after the ‘Hawks took Evan Brophy), Keith Yandle (105 to PHX, 3 spots before the ‘Hawks took Hjammer), and Patric Hornqvist (Mr. Irrelevant, 230th to NSH).

The only ‘Hawks pick from that draft to even remotely pan out was Hjammer. Outside of Hjammer and Skille, the rest of the ‘Hawks 2005 draft class has played a combined 105 NHL games – 101 by Michael Blunden, 4 by Evan Brophy, and 0 by everyone else. Basically what I’m trying to say is that Dale Tallon did a terrible fucking job of drafting. He got it right on a few picks – Toews and Kane obviously, Hjammer, Kruger, Ben Smith, and Brandon Pirri were also Tallon picks – but for the most part the ‘Hawks drafts when he was GM were hot garbage.

          • lizmcneill

Didn’t Scotty or Stan recommend Frogger or something?

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

No idea, though it’s entirely possible. Just pointing out that the idea that Tallon was some sort of drafting genius supposedly supported by the number of quality players Stan inherited is complete and utter BS. Toews and Kane were both great picks, no doubt, but for the most part the high quality players that Bowman inherited were actually also inherited by Tallon as they were taken when Mike Smith and/or everybody’s favorite $ Bill flunky Bob Pulford were running the show. Tallon was at the helm for the 2005-2009 drafts, players taken before Tallon was in the position include: Bolland (2004 2nd round), Bickell (2004 2nd round), Brouwer (2004 7th round), Seabrook (2003 1st round), Crawford (2003 2nd round), Byfuglien (2003 8th round), and Keith (2002 2nd round). All are guys that are routinely pointed to as being guys that Tallon acquired and Bowman lucked into, when in fact they’re as much Tallon’s guys as Toews and Kane are Bowman’s guys (i.e. Tallon worked for the team when they were taken, but wasn’t GM yet). The fact is that Toews, Kane, Hjammer, and Kruger are the only Tallon picks to make a regular impact on the ‘Hawks roster (Smith is getting there, Pirri probably isn’t) whereas Bowman’s already got 2 that are incredibly important contributors (Saad and Shaw) and several more blue chip prospects (like TT) on the way.

          • lizmcneill

Yes. You could make the argument it was those couple of drafts just pre-Tallon that got the Cups. What would DDN have done with the support corps of, say, the Oilers? No Marlboro 72, Buff, Bolly, Crow or Bicks?

I would also argue that the terribadness of Tallon’s drafts beyond DDN contributed to the Capocalypse and its immediate aftermath, and to the fact that we’re currently dressing two fetuses as goalies. It’s not even taking Skille and Beach over Kopitar/Staal/Rask or Eberle/Karlsson/Voynov. It’s not unreasonable to expect 4 years of depth drafting to produce a couple of bottom-6 wingers, another second-pairing dman, or a serviceable NHL backup. Any of those on an ELC or RFA deal would have been useful to the cap situation in 2011 or this year.

          • 10thMountainFire

            But… but… Dale.

          • justforkicks

            nah we’ll be fine.

          • laaarmer

            Q – “I must break you”
            Raanta – “Poke check”
            Simpson – “Go for it”

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

With 3 sets of back-to-backs, 2 of which are part of 3-games-in-4-nights stretches, barring Raanta getting onto a crazy hot streak and assuming Crawford really is out for 3 weeks I’d be shocked if Simpson doesn’t get at least 1 or 2 starts. If I were a betting man there are 3 dates listed above that I wouldn’t be surprised to see Q give to Simpson – tomorrow vs PHI, next Tuesday @ NSH, and one of COL on 12/27, STL on 12/28, and LAK on 12/30. Maybe he also gets 12/23 vs NJD since if you’re going to throw your backup backup backup goalie out there you may as well do it against the 3rd worst offense in terms of G/g…

        • birdhead

Dallas, Nashville, Colorado and St Louis; LA twice.

fffffuck. Those are some important divisional games + a team that scares me right there. let me find a convenient ledge to run out onto.

          • 10thMountainFire

            This was my reaction.

          • laaarmer

Raanta was going to get at least 3 anyway, so now he may play 6-7. It’s going to be OK, but if you insist, it’s not the fall that kills you

      • Accipiter

        9 game losing streak !!!

That schedule is not the best time for it either – a few Jets or Panthers or Sabres would have been a welcome sight.

    • 10thMountainFire

I bought ‘Hyperventilation for Dummies’. I’m learning.

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

If it’s an accurate prognosis, then ten or so games is hardly reason to make a panic trade. On the other hand, if someone has a serviceable veteran back up goalie they like to trade for Bollig and Brookbank, give Stan a call. I’m sure he’d love the excuse to Q proof the roster.

  • laaarmer

We will never win the cup with Antti Raanta as our goalie

He’s got a little T&A going there, eh?
How much do I have to pay to get them to play that when he is 1st star?

    • Accipiter

      I’ll take that bet.

      • laaarmer

        What bet?

Ok I’ll stop, but be ready.

          • jordyhawk

Q would play Matt Walker at wing over Morin. Frustrating.

        • jordyhawk

          That’s insane.

Really interesting results comparing Price and Rask from the Shot Quality project: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/shot-quality-reveals-rasks-true-value/

    • 10thMountainFire

Just wow. As an analyst, I am bowing to Chris Boyle, wherever he is. That was some seriously impressive graphic depiction, use of tools, and analysis. Awesome.

      • birdhead

the graphics are gorgeous. I was reading stuff about this project earlier in the year and apparently he pretty much had to count every single shot + location personally, since he found the NHL data was so unusable. cool stuff. of course, now I really want it for a) the Hawks b) … the Toronto Maple Leafs. :)))
