Five bucks the Bollig fluff piece tips a few people over…

    • cb_audio

What baffles me is why Bollig gets to evolve in the NHL while more qualified players have to evolve in the AHL. Garbage.

      • Paul the Fossil

Bollig _did_ evolve his game in the AHL, that’s likely why the management was willing to see if he could continue that evolution with the Hawks. His first season with Rockford he had 4 points in 55 games; second season 9 points in 53 games; third season 9 points in 35 games. In context it was actually the zero points in 25 games with the Hawks last season that ran contrary to his trend line.

        • Hawkeytalk

Didn’t Pirri have the most points in the AHL last year? Bah, never mind; I know this isn’t your argument either. This horse is dead.

      • Fleshrifle

Well…his eyebrows are developing nicely. Probably won’t get to the Fro-brow level though.

        • cb_audio

Maybe Q looks at Bollig’s eyebrows and it reminds him of a pair of young Q mustaches.

      • Preacher

        Grit. Hits. Toughness.

  • jordyhawk

Bollig is okay as 13th forward, but not as 12th. He is not good enough in the defensive zone; spends too much time stuck in cement and has the lateral mobility of a table hockey man. Hands aren’t great either once the puck gets to him.

We could still use a fourth line winger who ideally can partner with Freddy on the PK. Maybe Danault or Nordstrom by spring (doubtful though). Maybe deal Morin to an eastern team; he could get us that. Maybe Stan will be able to pull something closer to deadline.

    • Z-man19

I agree on Bollig. Q isn’t using him as the 12th F, more like the 11th, especially when Morin was playing. Bollig is getting almost 10 min TOI, and that is too much IMO.

If Stan is going to make a deal, someone else has to go (Kostka, Bbank) IMO. I just don’t see the cap space being available to make a trade without a current roster player being involved.

      • jordyhawk

We could package Kostka and Morin for a 4th line forward and a prospect. As long as the guy’s not too expensive we should be able to fit that under the cap and we’d be pretty much set (assuming there is enough left over for a case of duck tape to keep Handzus together).

        • Z-man19

It will be interesting to see what Stan does. How willing will he be to trade either Bbank or Kostka? Can they really find a guy that can help them for what Kostka makes? It seems to me that it will have to be a pretty even trade of salary to make that work, especially if they want to carry a full roster.

          • Paul the Fossil

I like Brookbank fine as a 6th/7th D-man but is he really likely to attract any trade interest? At age 33?

And Kostka too, a guy who didn’t manage to reach the NHL for the first time until age 27, is another GM going to be excited about giving something up for him?

          • Z-man19

Good points Paul. It’d have to be to someone desperate for D help and had a bottom 6 forward they could spare.

My gut says, this is pretty much the team we will have after the deadline, but who knows?

          • jordyhawk

Brookbank or Kostka would attract interest for many teams with playoff aspirations. You need depth at the back and very few clubs have it. Morin would attract lots of interest from mid-pack or lower teams.

          • jordyhawk

Why not trade one of them; they both fill the same role? From our perspective moving one opens up a bit of cap space (more if it’s BB, but he is less likely to go). From the trading partners perspective, Morin is the carrot. I’m not sure how much cap space we will have, but I’m thinking about a $1 million dollar player or so coming back. Surely we can squeeze that in although I confess I don’t know where we will be at with the Khabby thing and all that.

Reading the ESPN article, i got lost as to who was speaking and thought Versteeg used the word “quotidian”. I was really impressed for a second

    • 10thMountainFire

All I saw was ‘reading the ESPN article’ before I passed out. What happened?

  • steeg of their own

Oops, misposted. I thought TT was playing for Sweden, but he’s with the Finns.

    • steeg of their own

My bad. He’s with the Finns, not the Swedes. Finland doesn’t start until tomorrow.

  • Korab22

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone. I don’t recall how I stumbled on to this guy’s website (maybe it was from here), but he does a great job covering U.S. prospects.

    http://unitedstatesofhockey.com/

I’m unable to watch the game today, but it looks like Hinistroza made the team but no Tyler Motte. There’s a tweet off to the side regarding Stefan Matteau which is priceless.

    • Fleshrifle

Looks like Hinistroza made the scoring sheet today in the 5-1 victory. Anyone catch the US or Canada games today?

Gonna try to get TT and the Finns on the streaming feed tomorrow morning. I’m also thinking that TT and the Finns would be a great name for a Blues/Surf fusion band.

Can’t imagine why you are so excited about this, must be that Sharp is projected to make it.

      • laaarmer

Not that excited, but they do say Sharp could play 1st line, but should play with Toews.

        Toews or Crosby for captain?

        Oh yeah, Seabrook sucks.

        • Z-man19

I go Toews but I’m biased.

It would be interesting to see what Sharp could do with Crosby.

Ah yes, Biscuit. That’s why you’re giddy

          • laaarmer

Sharp and Stamkos on the same line. All the shots!

          • Z-man19

not enough puck to go around

          • lizmcneill

“Stop fighting over Marian’s puck, boys.”

        • Paul the Fossil

Damn Canada is deep at D though. And at forward too…feels like if they had a clear top goalie they’d be the best pick for the gold.

          • laaarmer

They will never win the gold with Crawford as their goalie

        • Hawkeytalk

If they were counting cups, Toews would win.

          • lizmcneill

            MVP trophies, too.

        • 10thMountainFire

If I can give up Pirri/Morin, you can give up Seabrook sucks. Let’s do this together… ready? 1, 2…

            no

Ville Pokka, I want that guy on the Hawks just for his name

        • VanDorp’sMullet

I think I drafted him in NHL 13.

      • lizmcneill

Tiny’s number is now Steeg’s; wonder what he’ll go for next year? #13 and #12 are both freed up (unless they’re cursed, which is a possibility)

      • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Truly amazing that this team has won two cups in four years, suffered a major purge, and still has so many top prospects.

        • lizmcneill

We should buy the amateur scouts flowers and chocolate.

        • SuperHawk27

The purge is what gave them the prospects and the picks…luckily Stan was able to turn some fringe picks into gold.

  • Paul the Fossil

The devil’s playground got to poking a bit at the basic team stats for the season thus far.

The Hawks are first in the league in goals per game and middle of the pack in goals-against. That combination certainly _can_ go deep in the spring but…it’s a far cry from last season when they were 1st in goals-against and 2nd in goals-for. (Not that it would be reasonable to expect a repeat of _that_ of course.)

They are a close fourth in the league in 5on5 ratio (goals for/goals against). That’s very positive, means more than does either special-team ranking.

Speaking of special teams the PP% has climbed to a close third in the league, very nice. Ah but then comes everyone’s big worry the dreadful PK%: stuck at 28th out of the 30 teams. Ick. The effect is mitigated somewhat by the Hawks committing the 5th-fewest PIM but still…if the season ended right now the Hawks would have the worst PK% of any team making the playoffs. Plenty of teams have gone deep in recent springs with mediocre PKs but not with flat-out terrible ones.

The Hawks are third-lowest in the league in shots allowed per game (also third-highest in shots taken, the best such combo in the league). That shots-against ranking makes me wonder…yep, Hawk goalies so far are 25th in the league in save percentage. Dead last among likely playoff teams. Well let’s take the glass-half-full approach and say that a healthy Crawford who gets back to his playing level of last year could go a ways towards bringing that goals-against ranking up.

    • ballyb11

Crawford better play better when he returns or ………
      1. Goalie controversy,
      2. I will be very worried.

      • CozBullsFan

Are you ever not worried bally?

        • Z-man19

It’s in bally’s contract to be worryd

          • CozBullsFan

I guess we do need someone to do that.

          • Z-man19

Everyone has to play their role. Makes for a well balanced commentariat

          • CozBullsFan

            What’s my job?

          • Z-man19

            Ladies Man

          • CozBullsFan

LOL. I prefer eternal optimist, but beggars can’t be choosers.

          • 10thMountainFire

It’s rather easy to be an optimist when our team is as good as the Hawks are, isn’t it? Merry Christmas to us.

          • CozBullsFan

I don’t know XMF. There are a couple “the sky is falling” people that pop up from time to time. And I’m not talking about our resident Crisis either.

          • 10thMountainFire

Some of them are legitimate hand-wringers. Others really have no logical thought behind it but push it nonetheless. If there’s a rational argument, even if I stand in opposition to the idea I can still grant the idea a level of respect. But some of this stuff is out of control.

          • Z-man19

            Jinx cop?

          • CozBullsFan

I think a couple people, including myself, fall under that category.

          • Z-man19

good to have overlap in some areas (maybe not this one), that way people can fill in if someone goes on IR or something

      • ballyb11

Stand up and be counted. Who really is not worried about our goaltending?

        • Z-man19

          Me

        • CozBullsFan

Depends on whether Khabi gets shown the door.

          • Joe Banks

Somehow, I’m sure they have already decided…

        • Fleshrifle

          Not worried

        • Country_Bumpkin

No shits given here. Backup is blossoming and Crow is the balls.

        • 10thMountainFire

          Stop it.

        • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Not standing up, but not worried.

        • SuperHawk27

Haven’t the Hawks proven that the goalie is not the most important part of the team? So you shouldn’t worry about it. Just remember,….2 Cups in 4 years with different goalies each time.

      • 10thMountainFire

Why would you be worried if there’s a controversy? That would mean Raanta is playing well. So by having a controversy, there would be a question of whether to play Crawford or a good Raanta… meaning we have two capable goaltenders. So explain to me again why you’re worried?

    • Z-man19

Crow’s 5on5 sv% isn’t that different than last year’s. His PK sv% is what sucks. Fix the PK and I’ll feel a lot better

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Not bad for what is essentially a retooling year after a parade. We all know a repeat is supposed to be next to impossible. Gotta say they’re doing better than expected, and the future looks bright.

I was watching Czech Republic v USA world juniors and my ears kept ringing. Blackhawk Prospect This Guy. Blackhawk Prospect That Guy. Blackhawk Prospect yet another guy…. That guy? Yeah, he’s a Blackhawk prospect too.

    • Hawkeytalk

These next 3 games should tell us a lot about where they are. While the Avs will be a distraction tonight, the real test is tomorrow vs the Blues. The kings have playing well too. Let’s go Hawks!

Those refs with the Swiss Milk cow uniforms are FUCKING AMAZING. They would be great to wear in a pickup game or on the ski slopes.

      • Joe Banks

Yup. Those threads are chick magnet material…

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

I guess it’s true what they say. The douche doesn’t fall far from the bag.
