What would be awesome is if Thornton appeals to an independent arbitrator and that party then decides Thornton was not punished severely enough (as most hockey fans already know).

    • Bannerman

For a first time offense, 15 games isn’t exactly a slap on the wrist. Thornton appeared genuinely sorry afterwards which porbably helped with the length of the suspension. I doubt he’ll appeal.

Looks like the Canadian dollar is not doing too good. Does that mean the expected extra cap bump from the TV deal might not be as big as people are expecting? Bad news if you need to sign people this offseason…..

    • derlemke

Maybe this will help. I didn’t have the time to read the whole article. http://www.ctvnews.ca/sports/nhl-commissioner-bettman-says-he-watches-value-of-canadian-dollar-1.1582632

      • lizmcneill

Bettman talks about it affecting the 2014-5 cap, which wouldn’t be the worst for us as long as it’s not a huge drop from the expected. Signing DDN to $BIGDOLLARS with the expectation of a sharp rise would be the worst, but Bowman seems to be skeptical of the 80M in 2015 that was being thrown about. Let’s hope their agent is, too. /WORRY’D.

        • MySpoonIsTooBig

The league announced at the GM meetings that they expect it to be close to $71M for 2014-15, $7M more than this year’s cap. That’s considered a pretty big jump for just 1 year. Thus even with the new Canadian deal the idea that the cap would jump another $9M to $80M in 2014-15, $2M more than the cap hike already considered massive, was never realistic. Definitely consider it a good thing that Bowman is skeptical of $80M, that means he’s got a firm grasp of logic.

            Phoenix.

    • BrandonPirri

I mean, it’s still 95 cents to the USD. It’s not $1.05 like it was in 2011, but that’s unreasonable.

I wonder why teams can’t just sign contracts in their local currency, instead of screwing around with CADUSD rates. Maybe adjust the salary cap for PPP. It would somewhat work out as Canada’s GDP/Capita adjusted for PPP is lower than the US. $1m CAD buys about the same in Canada as $1m USD buys in the USA.

      • lizmcneill

Saw something today about it dropping some more. I guess they can’t sign the guys to Canadian dollar contracts because then they couldn’t trade those players to US teams or vice versa.

        • BrandonPirri

Sure they could. They would just have to have two caps, one for USD and one for CAD, set at equal numbers adjusted for PPP. Once traded, you would receive a different amount of money.

The union would never go for it. I majored in Economics so this stuff probably makes more sense to me than it would to the players.

“So how do you beat these guys? Being the Blackhawks seems to help….” Why yes, yes it does.

as much as I dislike Marchand, his gestures towards the canuck’s bench was hilarious. They can bitch all they want about the Bruins, but in the end until they do win the cup it’s all hot air.

    • justforkicks

What annoys me about the fans is how hilarious they thought Kassian was at mocking Gagner and his jaw (broken as a result of Kassian) but are so offended by what Marchand did. Like fuck off dudes, you reap what you sow.

    Iginlas finger.

        • laaarmer

Who knows? Raanta has done well in his short time. I suppose it depends on Khabby too right? Who is better? Raanta? Khabby? Labarbera (exit stage right!)?
