The way Kane is eyeing up the Cup is like he just found a 5 to his liking after a Canucks game.

    • lizmcneill

nah, the Aura de Sleaze is too low.

      • VanDorp’sMullet

        :-)

  • VanDorp’sMullet

That Sportsnet column has a lot of good lines, but this one is just so right on regarding Emery’s attack on Holtby and the lack of NHL discipline because there was no precedent: “Misters Bettman and Shanahan: If there is no precedent, feel free to try and set one.”

  • putmeinthemadhouse

Am I reading this right? The fourth line didn’t start a single shshift in the offensive zone vs calgary?

    • lizmcneill

And all of them with 60%+ Corsi. Frogger and co = pretty good at shifting the puck out of their zone. I’ve noticed it against better teams, too.

And Frogger and Mutt won over two-thirds of their FOs? wow.

  • JB

Not sure why this struck me as funny but i think Kaner was the only guy not wearing a dark suit. Rebel to the end…FTW!!

    • 10thMountainFire

      Not the only one…

Zus was wearing an awesome sharkskin colored suit with a spread collar shirt. Great looking suit.

      • JB

        Sharkskin?? Nice!

That Kerry Fraser column is pretty good, seems like he’s getting more and more frank as he gets further away from having been an active ref.

    • Z-man19

I didn’t read that many but even the comments seem to concur that this situation with Emery/Holtby is absurd. Maybe the meatheads were further down

      • 1benmenno

        Here I am.

        • Z-man19

you’re a different definition of meathead

          • 1benmenno

            Scrapplehead?

  • Waylon

In addition to the team visiting Walter Reed, I seem to recall that they also do a private skate – and – meet with wounded warriors every year. They don’t put up a lot of fuss about it in public, which makes it even more noteworthy, I think. Most hockey players are still pretty decent role models, come to think of it.

  • 1benmenno

Interesting column by Fraser. But this line put me off my feed: “I was the top layer of a three person sandwich when one guy had his opponent down and was feeding him his lunch.”

    • VanDorp’sMullet

I had the same reaction. heh heh heh. But I liked how he admitted that the ref simply didn’t do enough to intervene in that situation. Also, some may disagree with me as being too meatheady, but if I were on Holtby’s team I would be jumping in there… 3rd man in penalties/fines be damned.

      • Z-man19

This is what I don’t get with the ref. If he’s not going to jump in there to stop it, stop warning Caps players from going in there and helping. He clearly told them to stay out of it. Now maybe they should have ignored the warning but still…

      • Waylon

I know that this is a serious thing to do, but I wished that Holtby would’ve raised his stick up and swung at Emery’s head when he came barreling into him. He didn’t want to fight and shouldn’t have felt obligated to do so, so fair game IMHO.

        • Korab22

I know what you mean. As bad as it sounds I was thinking the same thing, especially in the context of how Shanahan said Kessel’s initial stick swings at Scott were OK because he was defending himself.

        • 1benmenno

Never bring your fists to a stick fight.

    The president dinged Crow yesterday:

“These are not just good hockey players, they’re good guys. And that helps explain why 2 million Chicago fans came out to Grant Park to celebrate bringing home the Cup,” said the President. “Speaking of Grant Park, we were originally going to let Corey Crawford say a few words today, but we thought we’d keep this family event family-friendly. You guys have been hanging out with Rahm Emanuel too much.”

    • 1benmenno

      That’s a great line.

      • Paul the Fossil

He’s actually a pretty funny guy, regardless of what one thinks of his politics, reminds me of Reagan in that way. I have a couple of colleagues who are “friends of Barack”, in one case going all the way back to before he met Michelle or anybody’d ever heard of him, and they say that in private he’s a quite the wiseass. His speeches at the annual correspondents’ dinner in DC have been YouTube hits due to lines like these:

“Of course, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is known as the prom of Washington D.C. — a term coined by political reporters who clearly never had the chance to go to an actual prom.”

“Did you know that Sheldon Adelson spent $100 million of his own money last year on negative ads? You’ve got to really dislike me to spend that kind of money. I mean, that’s Oprah money. You could buy an island and call it “Nobama” for that kind of money. Sheldon would have been better off offering me $100 million to drop out of the race. I probably wouldn’t have taken it, but I’d have thought about it. Michelle would have taken it. You think I’m joking?”

        • 1benmenno

          Nobama Island.

  • Fleshrifle

I missed the ceremony yesterday (didn’t get my invite in time). But on the Blackhawk site it looks like Razor is up on the left next to Corey. Was he there?

  • birdhead

I really liked this piece at Backhand Shelf about the Holtby-Emery thing, I think other people here might too.
