The Sun Times “panic” article actually seems fairly intelligent. And Tracy Meyers offers her usual accurate assessment. We’re missing Fro the most? Given the current team’s stats, that’s probably true. And while I don’t think there is a Cup hangover, it does seem like the boys aren’t as fully engaged since it’s not the playoffs. They did seem to get “up” for Scum, Jr., but there doesn’t seem to be the same urgency in any of the other games. Tonight may be different as the vengeance factor should come in to play.

Agree about that article with one glaring exception, this statement: “Games are won or lost on special teams.” That is demonstrably untrue in today’s NHL. Actual results from the league nowadays show that if the Hawks get their act together 5on5 then they’ll start rolling again and if they don’t they won’t, pretty much regardless of how the special teams go.

In any case it’s hard to see how there couldn’t be at least a bit of Cup hangover among the veterans. Not necessarily glaring or huge, but to some degree that seems like just basic human nature.

Or maybe the hangover is just beginning. Guys came in determined to show there wouldn’t be a hangover but after a few games the hangover has settled in. The two stats I’ll reference are takeaways and blocked shots. Their avg for the 11 games is in double digits for both blocks and takeaways, even though they have been single digits in both the last two games. I’d swear I saw 2 takeaways for the Ning game at some point late in the game, the boxscore for that game has them at 8 now.

“Or maybe the hangover is just beginning.”
Probably not a “celebration” hangover but a “playoff pounding” hangover. I do find it a bit disturbing that there is still talk of guys like Hossa not being fully up to speed yet. It makes me wonder how much the other guys–especially, Tazer, with the beatings his melon took in the playoffs–are suffering the lingering effects of playoff injuries. (Didn’t Bickell’s knee get hurt too?)

          • Z-man19

Probably some combination of ‘not quite healed up’, ‘we won the whole freaking thing’ and ‘other teams are gunning for us’.

          • lizmcneill

Bick’s knee and thumb (he had surgery), while Tazer seemed to spend his summer in rather too exciting a manner for someone with a concussion I would not be surprised if he’d had a wrist injury, and Zus, Boss and Rozi could all have done with more healing time.

      • lizmcneill

I think you need at least one to be good or them both to be average. The pp is middle of the pack right now, not sure how, so if the kill could improve to about there too they should be fine. I’m more worried about the defensive breakdowns 5 on 5.

Sun times article doesnt mention how drastically improved the PK has been since the first few games. It wasn’t fros absence that was the missing key, the whole system was altered.

      • Preacher

And the stats are still a bit skewed because of the 3 goals against in the first game.

        • https://twitter.com/robondacob CitizenKaner

they’re not skewed. our PK sucked to start the season, and the stats reflect that

          • lizmcneill

it seemed to suck, pick up and then suck again, but I can’t look up the game logs on my phone.

Who the fuck is Brad Mills? I didn’t see the Minny game, and I haven’t read anyone talking about him yet. He played Bollig minutes and his stat line reads like a shelf of plain doughnuts … anyone?

    • Z-man19

That question has been asked and answered. Pay attention

Consider me duly chided. I haven’t joined in some recent threads … work, and leaf raking.

        • Z-man19

support the youth in your community and pay some kids to rake your leaves, or have a few and make them do it. Trust me, it’ll be cheaper to pay the neighbor kids.

Apparently Mills has been working hard at the Rock and they decided to reward him

Kinda scary news for Rinne. Infections. Ugh.

    • Z-man19

my dad got an infection after having knee replacement. They took the replaced knee out, put him on IV antibiotics for 4-5 weeks, then put another knee back in. Yeah, that’s some scary shit.

      • VanDorp’sMullet

No doubt. I remember I got a raspberry from sliding into home plate during a softball game… the scrap got infected and it was some serious shit. I’ll spare some of the more disgusting details, but the doc said that if I had waited a week or so longer, the infection would have spread into my knee and it’s extremely difficult to get out… worst case could have been amputation. Can’t imagine having an infection inside his hip. That’s very, very alarming. Hope he comes back to 100% soon.

        • DesertHawk

Got bit by a cat last year. Within 8 hours I couldn’t move my hand. Surgeon said post-op that if I’d waited about 3 or 4 hours longer to go in and get put on antibiotics(I did that at the 8 hour mark, then had surgery the next morning) I’d have lost my left hand.

          • VanDorp’sMullet

Shite. I’ve heard cat bites can be bad, but that’s fucked up, DH. Glad all is well.

    • High and Wide

Yeah. Hope it’s not a Lupul-level situation (he missed a year after a post-op back infection).

  • Korab22

Seabrook’s agent called. He wants a cease and desist on the above picture.

    • flahawkfan

LMAO. Didn’t even notice him in the background there. He must be watching Sam’s Maple Leaf gauge in that photo.

      • bannerman

Speaking as a Hawks fan, I hope he doesn’t make team Canada and that helps motivate him for the second half.

As an American, he gives the US a better shot at a gold medal

  • Korab22

Exactly. C’mon Seabs. Hockey-ready at least. But hey, he does have two hands on his stick so it’s not a complete fail.

    • Korab22

      Reply fail…pot call kettle black.

    • lizmcneill

But his stick is not on the ice and he does not have a forward. For all you young hockey players…

      • zacked

        But he’s inside the dots!

        • SuperHawk27

He is challenging Keith for the most Own-Goals on the team.
