Lousy Smarch Weather: Blackhawks 5 – Penguins 1

Box Score
Event Summary
Extra Skater

I could not have been more excited about the Blackhawks playing at Wrigley Field back in 2009. The Hawks were still on their way up and there was finally energy back in the stands. I gladly paid hundreds of dollars for two tickets for my brother and myself to sit in centerfield, lose all feeling in my toes and fingers to watch the Hawks get off to a fast start before getting demolished at the hands of Scum. This year, while I was tempted to go to the game and even had tickets offered the day before, I couldn’t muster up the same excitment. Whether it was my ongoing headcold or just my disinterest in Soldier Field compared to the iconic Wrigley, I just wasn’t as excited. That doesn’t mean the game didn’t turn to be a pretty exciting and beautiful spectacle though. It just means I was happy to have been watching it from a bar where I only had to walk 5 feet to get a new beer and not worry about whether I would lose a toe.

The game itself was just about as we expected when we saw the snow start to fall a lot more than predicted. It was sloppy, it was slow, it was ugly but it also looked pretty damn fun. It’s pretty worthless to start talking about strategy or gamesmanship when players simply had a hard time keeping the puck on their sticks or when simple quick passes ended up getting buried in a snowbank around center ice. If there’s one thing to note on the positives, at least it kept the Hawks from attempting their normal home run passes. Lets just get straight to the bullets.

Washington_Bullets2

  • While the game was a great spectacle, it wasn’t without its costs. After only a handful of shifts, Marian Hossa left the game. At first, I was hoping it was simply Hoss pulling a Roger Murtaugh “I’m too old for this shit”. Instead, it seems on a hit in the corner, Hoss suffered an upper body injury that could see him miss a little bit of time. Now, if this is nothing serious, it could be slight blessing in disguise. The added games in the Olympics aren’t going to do Hoss any favors. If the injury is something that just needs time to recover, it could be a nice break for a key piece of the Hawks plan coming into the playoffs. Of course, that’s all out the window if the injury is more serious than the Hawks would let on, something they’ve been guilty of in the past.
  • Other than all of the hoopla, the big story of the game had to be the first ever matchup between Toews and Crosby in the NHL. As we’ve known, due to injuries, we’ve never seen the two at the dot against the each other. And it didn’t disappoint. Or, it didn’t disappoint for Hawks fans and/or Crosby haters (not mutually exclusive, it would seem). Toews won the opening faceoff clean and never looked back. While Crosby would actually go on to win the head-to-head faceoff battle 9-7, it’s Toews 3 points, 7 shots and +3 compared to Crosby’s 0 points, 3 shots and a -2 rating that tell the bigger story.

Toews was determined as we’ve ever seen him to make sure he was the bigger man at the end of the game. He had an absolute beauty of a goal that will likely show up on his career highlight reel given the circumstances and he wasn’t afraid to yell at his teammate only a few days ago that he sure does fall pretty easy given how great of a skater he is. Toews was everything we were hoping he would be in this matchup.

  • Speaking of Toews’ beautiful goal, it was once again USA getting beat up by big brother Canada as Toews made an absolute joke out of Team USA defenseman Brooks Orpik with a beautiful inside out move.
  • If someone can explain to me why the “intent to blow” rule didn’t matter, that’d be nice. We’ve seen plenty of good goals called back because the official was planning on calling the play dead. If he lost track of the puck as it trickled past Fleury and wanted to call it dead, why did it suddenly not matter? Was it because there weren’t other players around? Or were they just scared of what Toews would do to their families if they called that goal back?
  • In a game that was obviously going to lack a bit of flash, it was great to see the Hawks get contributions from some players that have been in the doghouse lately. Versteeg and Bicks both potted goals, though the former was simply in the right place in the right time to receive a beautiful pass from Kane after defense from Scuderi that can best be described as abstract.
  • For a brief moment at the start of the second, the snow let up and both teams were able to speed up their game closer to normal speeds… and the Hawks dominated. Great to see the Hawks able to adapt to the shitty conditions when necessary but still able to turn on the jets when they were able. The game in a few weeks against these two should be pretty damn fun.
  • This is the bullet where we make fun of Seabrook for just burying one past Crawford to ruin the shutout.
  • Kruger was 10-3 at the dot. Not bad man.
  • Enjoy the “Heritage Classic” in a few hours. See you again in a few days.

  • ballyb11

10-3. How could he turn it around so dramatically in one year?

    • birdhead

Maybe he’s really bulked up, or the new coaching is working. It’s pretty amazing to see.

      • Bullitt315

I read an article a while back where faceoffs win % basically increases with age. So, basically, I’m assuming it’s practic against top competition.

        • birdhead

I imagine everything increases with age, because you don’t stick in the league unless you’re good, and you don’t keep taking faceoffs if you’re bad at them. See: Patrick Kane.

        • birdhead

Which is not to say that practice isn’t also a factor obviously …

        • lizmcneill

Practice, increased upper body strength with physical maturity, knowledge of the linesmen and opposing centers.

Still, Frogger wouldn’t have gone from “average-to-below-average sophomore C” to “defensive faceoff specialist” in a year without putting in some serious work, so kudos to him!

      • zacked

Is he still platooning with Benji?

    • Accipiter

      Yanic Perreault and practice.

      • Z-man19

Got better at taking draws on the road, I believe that is the biggest difference in his numbers this year

  • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

I meant to ask this earlier. Does anybody know what the fuck the ref was referring to when he said it was “not a reviewable play” on the Toews beauty goal?

    • Z-man19

No. In my mind that goal should not have counted

      • bizarrohairhelmet

        1. Yes, it should have counted because the gods of hockey know that kind of goal has always been intended to be a goal.

        2. No, it shouldn’t have counted because the “Intent to Blow” rule clearly and egregiously negates the goal.

        3. Yes, it should have counted because the NHL realizes the refs sometimes make mistakes and Toronto has figured out how to correct the real-time boners like that so that the sport is no longer embarrassed on a nightly basis.

        • Z-man19

          4. Fix the damn rule

        • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

That does not answer the “not reviewable” thing though.

          • Z-man19

They claim the ref blew but the puck had already crossed the line, thus it’s not reviewable

  • Z-man19

The point on intent to blow is SPOT ON. The whistle clearly blows before the puck crossed the line. The ref said the play was not reviewable, I’d love to hear why. The call was correct but not by how I understand the rules

  • Accipiter

    Nice wrap-up, Killion.

    • Z-man19

      Brown noser

      • Accipiter

How else are you supposed to get to the cocaine ?

        • bizarrohairhelmet

The way I do it. It’s uncomfortable, but it only takes 2 minutes.

  • Paul the Fossil

Nothing about KNEEL? He was plus-4 (!) for the game. That slipped him past Hossa for the league lead in that category among forwards, and past Seabrook for the team lead. (Currently it’s Saad +27, Seabrook +26, Hossa +25.)

    • Accipiter

      Kneel before Saad.

    • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

But did he score? Seabrook did and Hossa was hurt, so he did nothing!

    • 10thMountainFire

      My boy.

  • Paul the Fossil
    • Country_Bumpkin

Who is cutting onions in here?

    • ballyb11

Make a Wish is off the charts fabulous. Toews / Hawks are special. The celebrities can turn down the request. One turned down my niece.

      • 10thMountainFire

Toews’ parents raised him to be a good man.

      • lizmcneill

Toews looks to be good with kids too – getting down to their eye level to talk and so on. Kaner otoh looks like he adores Sharpy’s kid but kind of awkward with others. He’ll probably overtake Sharpy for most doting dad when he has kids though.

  • Country_Bumpkin

Ottawa is such a garbage-ass team. 1-0 Dickheads from Vancouver and that should be the game winner.

    • http://www.thecommittedindian.com/ Killion

      You were saying?

      • Country_Bumpkin

Lol. Totally f’ed that one up.

        • birdhead

I thought that Sharpy’s goal yesterday might do it. Was wrong about that too!

    • Joe Banks

      oops!

  • jordyhawk

One thing I liked about last night’s TV broadcast was the wide angle/high angle shots. You miss a lot of the transition game on regular telecasts simply because for the most part the cameras only cover 50-60 feet or so of ice.

    • Bullitt315

Agreed. It was an odd angle for about 5 minutes till I got used to it and I really liked it

    • ballyb11

      Hated it.

    • krome

That camera angle game me a vertigo-like sensation a few times.

      • jordyhawk

I get that, but it did provide more of the ice (especially on the breakouts). The letterbox view gets old.

  • Accipiter
    • Paul the Fossil

“the puck still performed random acts of disappearing while skaters who thought they had possession screeched to a halt, as if they realized they just left the house without their car keys.” — made me laugh, that is exactly what Keith and Seabrook each looked like a couple of times.

      • ballyb11

Great writer, kinda like a sports reporting Mike Royko.

    • cliffkoroll

      So good.

“Perhaps there was a message to be drawn from the inclement conditions. The Blackhawks, with so many gifted individuals, are often accused of trying to create the pretty, perfect play—especially before home crowds. But Head Coach Joel Quenneville implored his heroes to “keep it simple” instead of attempting to craft tic-tac-toe masterpieces on a rink that required constant sweeping.”

“Toews’ unassisted winner to make it 2-0 was a winter classic. Captain Serious could generate such offensive highlights more often, but he is a selfless slave to the 200-foot paradigm.”

“His superstar counterpart and fellow Team Canada luminary, Sidney Crosby? A relatively silent night. Marcus Kruger of the Blackhawks and Team Sweden? Brilliant.”

  • Accipiter

Daniel Sedin is out of the game. Took a big hit from Methot.

    • Joe Banks

Are they going to ask 60,000 fans to pray to his helmet?

      • Accipiter

They will pray for Henrik. Daniel will feel the results.

      • 10thMountainFire

No they’ll burn effigies of Duncan Keith.

  • Country_Bumpkin

Although I hate all Canucks equally, my newest hate-on is for Yannick Hansen. This is the douchenozzle that hit Hossa in the back of the head the season following him being concussed into Bolivia. I wish nothing but bad for the Canucks, but I wish chronic diarrhea for Hansen.

    • Joe Banks

And slashed Bollands ankle so hard he was out for a month…

  • bizarrohairhelmet

Like Lack getting shelled as a result of the Lu controversy.

    • birdhead

What a damn dickhead move that was though, really.

      • Accipiter

Torts could be a big reason Kesler wants to be traded.

        • birdhead

it’s just fucking garbage. I mean for god’s sake, the Devils started BRODEUR, who is legitimately a bad goalie this year. The Canucks have fucked Luongo around, for years he got nothing but bad press as a result of his team’s inability to get it done, he had to rehabilitate his own image with a freaking twitter account, then he and Schneider were in limbo for years. They finally trade Schneider and pick Lu as the starter and he can’t even goddamn start the Heritage Classic? I understand Lack is coming off a shutout, but Lu has not been bad for them this year at all, he’d give them a chance to win.

          I just don’t get it.

          • Joe Banks

Grapes said it was because he is a nice guy and he lets people get away with this shit.

          • birdhead

Maybe but IDK, the onus is still on the management to make the smart decisions.

        • Country_Bumpkin

Torts will most likely run his best players off. He will be fired within two years.

    • Joe Banks

Boy, did Grapes ever tear Vancouver a new ass between periods…
and re-iterated Seabrook should have been on team Canada.

      • 10thMountainFire

Well color me stupid. I agree with Don Cherry.

        • Joe Banks

          Hertz – Donut?

      • 1benmenno

What did he say? Similar message as P.J. Stock’s during second intermission?

  • Country_Bumpkin

Nothing more satisfying than a Vancouver loss.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

      errr…

      • Country_Bumpkin

        C’mon, I’m being somewhat sarcastic.

        • 10thMountainFire

          Somewhat?

  • birdhead

    Sheesh.

Eddie Lack sitting, a huge scrum. His face looks drained, sad. "I was told to play." On Lu, "he's the best gtender this franchise has had."— David Ebner (@DavidEbner) March 3, 2014

    • Z-man19

Nothing like tossing your coach under the bus. Deserved but still

      • birdhead

Torts absolutely deserved that very mild criticism. Dude is in his first NHL season and just got booed through a marquee game.

        • Z-man19

They’d probably booed Lu as well. Welcome to life as a Vancouver goalie. It was dumb not to start Lu but does Lack want to play or not? Lack doesn’t need to be involved in the stupidity of not starting Lu IMO

          • birdhead

they booed Lack specifically because he wasn’t Lu, I think from pretty early in the game.

I assume they asked him about it and he didn’t just jump in. “I was told to play” seems like the only possible response really. What’s he going to do, pitch a shutout? Not sure goalies can turn those on like a tap.

          • Z-man19

So what he got booed. He wants to be an NHL goalie, he better get used to it, especially in Vancouver

          • birdhead

Oh come on. There’s a difference between being booed because you, personally, played badly, and hearing ‘We want Lu’ in the first period.

          • Z-man19

If Lack wants to make it, it shouldn’t matter what the fans are saying. In no way shape or form should Lack ever suggest that the coach should have picked the other guy to start. Everyone knows Lu should have started, Lack should stay out of it.

          • lizmcneill

I’m sure the beats asked him about it. No-win situation for the kid.

          • Z-man19

‘Coach told me to go play, I didn’t get it done’.

          • birdhead

That probably *is* what he said, and the reporter cut off half of it.

          • Z-man19

Could be, but there shouldn’t be more than that

          • 10thMountainFire

            Tortorella is warm trash.

        • 10thMountainFire

Tortorella is the NHL Bobby Valentine.

          • birdhead

            I don’t understand that reference :(

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Hot Head and a Dumb Shit

          • 10thMountainFire

            ^^^^^^^

          • Z-man19

And his shelf life with players is similar to a gallon of milk

    • bizarrohairhelmet

Whether burning down their city or burning down their coach. Either way, there’s always a fire.

  • Z-man19

So if Van can’t find a new gear, we may be looking at 5 teams from the Central making the playoffs. Quite the change from the start of the season when most thought it’d be 5 teams from the Pac

  • lizmcneill

@TramyersCSN: #Blackhawks send Brandon Pirri to FLA for a third-round choice in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and a fifth-round selection in the 2016 draft.

Welp. Might have come in useful for playoff injuries.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

Guess Stan likes dancing with Dale

      • lizmcneill

Looks like Stan might be repaying the Skille for Fro fleecing, you’d think Pirri would be worth a little more than that.

        • birdhead

according to my Panthers fan friend he’s probably gonna be in their top 6 so uh yeah

        • bizarrohairhelmet

I’m sure he will get a very strong look in FLA. Was he a Dale or Stan pick up? Seems like he was Dale’s as he was picked in the 2009 Entry Draft.

    • birdhead

According to Renaud Lavoie he asked for a trade a while ago. Fair enough. I hope he gets a really good shake with the Cats.

      • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

        This would explain a lot!

        • birdhead

I guess. I feel a bit rough for Pirri. Tough situation to be in when the really successful franchise that drafted you can’t or won’t find room for you and you end up in frigging Sunrise.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Perhaps he had the wrong attitude and that was holding him up and prompted the move in the end.

          • birdhead

            I dunno, maybe, but.

    • 10thMountainFire

This may portend another move. Stan confident he’s about to land someone? Why else move Pirri now for so ‘little’? He could have brought more in July…

      • Z-man19

Not sure about more but I doubt any less

        • lizmcneill

He’s an RFA and Florida don’t need him down the stretch because they’d be better off tanking. Do we need a roster slot to sign Johns/Hayes or something?

          • Z-man19

Last time I counted, they had at least one spot left for guys under contract

      • ballyb11

Or……..might not have. I think these guys know a players value, probably not off by far.

        • neo1978

This, Pirri is worth more to Tallon now than in July. And I don’t see Pirri worth more to anyone else more than Tallon, so…

  • Commit88

Pirri gone for a 3rd and 5th to uncle Dale

    • putmeinthemadhouse

      ..thats it?

      • Commit88

That is what I was thinking.. Thought they’d get a prospect or nhl player or a better pick for Pirri.

        • lizmcneill

3rd + 5th is more or less a 2nd which is where he was drafted. Developed him for Florida’s benefit.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Next up: Morin to Winnipeg.

          • neo1978

A 3rd and a 5th for a kid with 35 NHL games is a steal. Probably only happens because he was a Tallon pick to begin with.

    • birdhead
  • 10thMountainFire

There has to be another move coking. Pirri could have brought a bigger return.

    • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Not if the asking for a trade thing is True. He may have become a toxic asset in the organization that needed to be moved out, even at a loss.

      • ballyb11

        Toxic asset. Wow.

        • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Meaning, if his attitude turned negative against his team and organization, that is a toxic mentality in a Locker room and on a team that needs to be removed. Only speculating here.

          • 10thMountainFire

There could have been other blame to go around.

          • birdhead

How about the negative attitude from the organisation towards his play? Why should he stay optimistic about his chances with the Hawks? Realism is not toxicity.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

I am just speculating here. IDK what it is was or even if this is a dynamic. IF he did turn toxic, I am not saying it is all him, the Hawks could just as well be at fault and both be a victim of circumstance.

          • Joe Banks

I’m NOT saying Pirri didn’t change for the better, (I hope so) but 3 years ago, I had seats behind the Rockford bench.
All that kid did is bitch bitch bitch.
At the refs, the other team, his own team, and his own coaches. Talented kid, sure, but wow.

          • ballyb11

I know what you mean. Hard to believe. Maybe it’s just that toxic asset is way to strong.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

It is the term we use in my world as a CPO (Boss).

          • ballyb11

In your “world”, are you a good “CPO”?

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Better would be “a” term, not “the” term. We have many ways to describe this possible scenario, “toxic” is one of them. They promoted me to SCPO, so how does that work for you?

          • ballyb11

            I’ll repeat, Wow.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Please, you have no clue. You have no idea what type of damage a piss poor attitude and ethic can do to a team, division and crew. “Toxic” is being nice.

          • Z-man19

Not to make a big deal out of this but don’t think that people with bad attitudes only affect sports teams or the military. If you work with more than yourself, you can fully appreciate what a bad apple can do to your work environment. Obviously, the repercussions of this could be far more severe in a military situation, but I’ve seen what ‘bad apples’ can do to a workplace and it’s not pretty.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Not to mention what just one bad apple can do to an apple pie. Now that’s unAmerican.

          • Accipiter

            Pirri is a terrorist ?

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            Worse. He’s Canadian.

          • 10thMountainFire

            That escalated quickly.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

I agree with this 100% agreement. I got a little incensed at the “Wow” comment, seemed to be judgmental to a level I did not care for towards me, they are not easy at all to deal with as a leader. This was more tailored in response to that. I totally agree bad apples can exist everywhere in all team related tasks.

          • birdhead

you referred to Pirri as a toxic asset and you thought “wow” was judgmental?

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Internet Language. It’s not very precise.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

No, the fact it I use the term among others to describe people at my job, and the response to that was, “wow”. I could misreading this, but that is how I first perceived it. If I am wrong, I am sorry.
            .
The first wow, no I had no issue with.

          • birdhead

Fair enough. I flipped out at a boss the other day for referring to people as “resources” so what do I know.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

I hate using that term in referring to people too, but sill do at times as well. I try to use the generic “bodies” because it at least humanizes it.

          • birdhead

For context my organisation is less than 20 people. In my opinion there’s no justification for that.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

I do not know if I would take it personally or not. An individual skill set is a “resource”. If I need 3 supervisors but have only 2, I do not have the required “resources” to meet standards.

          • birdhead

He wasn’t even talking about me. To take your example, “Not enough supervisors” seems to me to be not much longer and more complete as a turn of phrase (i.e. the problem is not not enough bodies but not enough trained or appropriate *supervisors*) but ehh. It also is just so jargonistic, which I am opposed to in language as a matter of taste.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

The intent I think is the key thing. It could be jargon it could be more than that and either good or bad. But we consider our most valuable resource/asset to be our people.

          • birdhead

(I mean I get it in really huge orgs. Don’t like it but sometimes I guess it’s necessary. Doesn’t make sense for us.)

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Because I do not want to leave this hanging.
There is nothing I do (outside battle) that I enjoy less than having to recommending cutting a Sailor loose to be processed out of the Navy. But when they cause more problems and issues that detriment the rest of the team, because I or others cannot afford the others the time or attention they deserve due to an individual or an individuals attitude is not compliant or disruptive, sometimes the only course is separation after all other reasonable options have been exhausted. This is a cancerous/toxic situation that cannot be allowed to stay in place. It will affect those around the bad apple in a negative way. Sorry if you think the term “toxic” is too strong, but that is exactly what it is at its worst, when you need to cut your loses at times.

          • 10thMountainFire

Term is quite common. I agree with TMFF.

          • Joe Banks

Three more letters, and you’re in the Zodiac!

        • birdhead

ikr. I think it’s pretty fair to ask for a trade. The Hawks were not going to give him a reasonable NHL shake, which must have become clear to him the last time he got sent down, and I think it is pretty widely agreed that at least some NHL teams would want to give him NHL minutes. He’s supposed to just stick around in Rockford forever? How hard is it to get a two-way deal if your entry-level deal expires with you in the AHL?

          • neo1978

Did people act this way towards Skille when he was cut loose? I don’t remember. And to answer your question, fairly easy to get a second contract without having made the NHL.

Bickell’s first full season was at 24,
Jack Skille’s first full season was at 23.
Ben Smith’s first full season was at 25.
Shawn Lalonde, Bill Sweatt and Igor Makarov (all second round picks like Pirri) never got a full season.

          • birdhead

Am I supposed to be mad at Pirri or something? IDGI.

I really meant a second contract with a new team. If the Hawks weren’t going to extend him, could he go off and get signed by Florida? But I will freely admit to not knowing that much about how it works in the minors and what’s normal.

      • 10thMountainFire

Can’t be all Pirri. I don’t want to re-hash but if Q was pushing down while Stan was pushing up with Pirri, there was a disconnect.

        • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

This could result in frustration on Pirri, understandibly, and who knows how he may have acted out.

          • 10thMountainFire

Well when the GM wants you to play and the coach immediately bristles before camp even opens…

    • Joe Banks

He’s on a big farm now, where there’s plenty of room to run and play…

      • 10thMountainFire

He’ll get 20+ goals in FLA. Maybe 50 points.

        • Accipiter

          This year ?

          • 10thMountainFire

Not unless they’re extending the season…

  • MattC86

Ryan Miller in his Blues jersey makes me vomit.

    • Joe Banks

If he was losing 2-0, would you feel any better?

      • cpetkus

        it makes me feel better

    • lizmcneill

Did letting BizNasty score on him make you feel better?

  • lizmcneill
  • birdhead

Here’s a nightmare scenario for everyone: Brandon Pirri is the new Patrick Sharp.

When you realise that that’s not going to happen, the deal doesn’t look so bad, eh?

    • 10thMountainFire

      Handsome and full of pranks?

      • birdhead

dangerously undervalued by the organisation that drafted him, bounced between the A and the NHL, turned into a star on the team that gave him a consistent shift.

And also played him with Patrick Kane, I think that helped.

        • Accipiter

Also, the Hawks moved Sharp from C to W (for the most part).

          • birdhead

            True.

Perhaps Jonathan Huberdeau will be the Patrick Kane in this equation.

    • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

If it did happen, the big difference is the Hawks are a winner that could shed players around, Philly well……….

      • 10thMountainFire

Pirri is way too talented to miss. Even while here on the big club, he managed to score in limited opportunities.

        • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

I would like to have kept Pirri or gotten more for him, but I do not know about this. Kinda WTF.

          • 10thMountainFire

For me, this one smelled of ‘not a Q type player’ from the start. That’s fine. I don’t like wasting scoring though… Especially when we struggle at 2C. Just seemed to be messed up from start to finish.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Honestly, if it was a conflict between Q and Pirri (personalities did not work), this was the right move. Q does not need to prove himself, Pirri still does.

          • 10thMountainFire

Yes but what if this conflict is on Q?

          • Z-man19

Not saying you’re wrong but it’s a moot point. Pirri or Q, who are you keeping?

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

            Q.

          • 10thMountainFire

Q obviously. But he’s not infallible.

          • Z-man19

            No he’s not

          • 10thMountainFire

            Bollig…

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

No he is not, but a Green Horn Rookie vs a SC winning Coach, reigning SC Champ Coach??? Q has earned the benefit of the doubt.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Ben Smith, Jeremy Morin…

          • Z-man19

I think we can say the verdict on this one won’t be known for a while

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Agreed, I am hopefull this benefits the Hawks.

          • Z-man19

That’s what I don’t get, why now? Stan could have gotten something for him on draft day. Why give up depth now?

          • 10thMountainFire

Maybe Stan and Q had a ‘Come to Jesus’ and Q said he needs a 2C and Pirri ain’t it?

          • Z-man19

Who is? No need to trade Pirri now

          • 10thMountainFire

            I agree. A bit odd.

          • birdhead

What happens when Zus and Regin both go down with an injury in the playoffs?

          • Accipiter

            Pierre-Marc Bouchard.

          • Z-man19

            are you serious?

          • Accipiter

            Why ?

          • Why

Pirri’s contract is up. All the Blackhawks have are his restricted rights.

          • Joe Banks

            He can’t hear you…

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces

Q is still the Coach, and winning Coach at that.

        • lizmcneill

Losing one 30-goal guy is crazy depth. Losing 3 plus a 2-way forward states to look like carelessness. We kept Kaner, hopefully the same goes for Saad and Teuvo.

          • birdhead

            *counting* Sharpy, Carter, Richards, JVR?

          • birdhead

Man it looks bad when you put them all together like that.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Haha Philadelphia…

          • Joe Banks

How do they win any games?

          • 10thMountainFire

            Violence?

          • birdhead

Well, on the Hawks side … Jimmy Hayes, Ryan Stanton? Jack Skille, Troy Brouwer, Bolly, Byfuglien. Wisniewski? Ruutu?

          • birdhead

I’m actually not sure if this is a compliment to Hawks’ GMing or a knock on the drafting.

          • 10thMountainFire

Wiz was attitude. So was Ruutuu, no?

          • Accipiter

            Nobody beats the Wiz.

          • 10thMountainFire

            I’m the Wiz!

          • birdhead

I have no idea. Carter could be said to be attitude as well. But with respect to Ruutu there’s a bit of a talent and production gap there.

          • lizmcneill

            Didn’t Ruutu fetch Ladd?

          • 10thMountainFire

            Ladd fetched Morin…

          • Accipiter

            Steeg fetched Stalberg…

          • 10thMountainFire

Stalberg fetched… a hot dog in the press box

          • birdhead

            there you go.

          • lizmcneill

How many of those so we take back as a gift, in a cap-free world?

          • birdhead

I still wish the Hawks had taken Stanton over Kostka or Brookbank at the beginning of the year. Hm, I dunno, in a cap-free world I think you hang on to Brouwer, Bolly and Buff, don’t you?

          • lizmcneill

Tbrou and Buff can take turns in the doghouse.

Or keep Ladd, are we counting him?

          • birdhead

I was counting Hawks’ draft picks who turned into NHL regulars so nah (although in a cap-free world naturally yes).

          • Joe Banks

            Cam Barker?

          • lizmcneill

            Indeed.

  • Joe Banks

    Ott still looks ugly…

  • lizmcneill

Fro also got a 3rd and a 5th, and Florida suck more so the picks will be higher. Make anyone feel better re value?

    • 10thMountainFire

Well Pirri was never going to play here because Q for whatever reason did not take to the kid. So what we got was what we got. Now let’s just win another chalice.

      • Joe Banks

I’m glad he’s going to get NHL minutes. I’m thrilled Ben Smith is getting NHL minutes. It’s for the best.

        • 10thMountainFire

Ben Smith had to scratch and claw with Q as well…

          • Joe Banks

            Exactly.

    • Z-man19

Trade still smells funny, the timing is odd if nothing else

    • BrandonPirri’s Corpse

Not particularly. I’m not saying Pirri is a sure thing, but I’d rather have a developed center over two picks in a weak draft.

      • Z-man19

        Nice change, how’s the afterlife?

        • Flavius

          SPOILER ALERT!

      • birdhead

        poor you :(

  • Z-man19

I think this means TT at least gets a look this year, or he’s on the backup list

    • 10thMountainFire

In the context of Stan’s remarks on TT yesterday… Good stuff. But what if… Q?

      • Z-man19

If there are injuries, he won’t have a choice

      • Accipiter

High hockey IQ, TT has is. It will be his size/strength that hinders him.

        • Joe Banks

          So you’re saying he’s a Wee Man???

          • Accipiter

            No.

          • Joe Banks

            Aw, you’re no fun…

        • 10thMountainFire

          Protein shakes and time…

          • Accipiter

            I’ll set my watch.

          • Joe Banks

Be careful… “a watched wee man never grows”…

        • neo1978

Picture is TT with Saad and the Blackhawk bosses. Saad is 6-2 so TT is around 5-11?

I mean this kid is bigger than Kane, right? He is at least Andrew Shaw’s size and at this point might be 10 pounds heavier than Shaw?

          • Accipiter

The Hawks should be willing to let him join when his Euro season is over. He has been playing against men there so he can’t be that small or lacking in strength. I just meant throwing the kid into NHL games (most likely playoff games) this year could be more of an adjustment. If he is elusive/hard to hit then he should be fine.

    • Joe Banks

“The plan all along” part deux

      • Country_Bumpkin

I’ve not seen one minute of TT playing hockey. Is this kid the shit?

        • Accipiter

          No, sir.

  • Country_Bumpkin

Blues are losing, and I’m waiting for Kessler to don a Hawks sweater.

    • Joe Banks

      Don’t hold your breath…

      • Country_Bumpkin

Hey, I was so accurate today calling the Senators/Canucks game, why not?

    • lizmcneill

The “Kane&Toews could ask for 12M each!” speculation has resurfaced on Twitter, so let’s not get too eager to add more expensive 30 year olds.

      • Country_Bumpkin

Kane and Toews will give the Hawks a hometown discount.
        Hawks 4 life!

        • Joe Banks

          I expect…

        • lizmcneill

Source seems to be Pittsburgh beats explaining why the Pens were beaten last night. Maybe if Shero didn’t trade away prospects for Brendan Morrow…

      • Joe Banks

        With 2 major injuries…

          • 10thMountainFire

  • zacked

I don’t get how many times I’ve heard the word ‘never’ since the trade was announced.

“Pirri will never fit in with this team”, “He will never get a fair shot”, “He will never be a good defensive player”, “Q will never warm up to him”. Kid is 22 and has 400 minutes in the NHL, it’s a little early to be casting him in stone.

      • BrandonPirri’s Corpse

“Q will never warm up to him” seems to have come true, too.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

Heh. There are 14 uses of the word “never” on this page. 8 of them are either from your post or in direct reference to your post (including my use of the word). 2 of them are in Kills’ wrap and do not address Pirri. Of the other 4, only 1 refers to Pirri and one of them is actually a link to a Star Wars junk article in my targeted ads.
