      BOB!!!

    • VanDorp’sMullet

      Hi Bob!

  • five_hole_brain

I believe the top five commenters get their names on the Stanley Cup.

    • 2883

heh can we make it 6 ;)

      • bizarrohairhelmet

        or 8

        • Accipiter

You have 2 accounts, who does the tie breaker go to ?

          • 2883

I am 6th but a solid 600 comments behind you

          • bizarrohairhelmet

I actually lost 300 comments or so when I conjoined them. One account now to in the darkness bind them.

          • Accipiter

One account of power to rule middle internet ….

    • Z-man19

      SWEET

      • Z-man19

all my blabbing is paying off, sorry you all have to endure

  • cza

    Anyone going to O’Hare?

  • eyemon

    Happy humans in Wheaton!

  • Jim A

    Thank you Hawks

  • hawksinfour

    Yah Babeee!

  • thefearlessfreep

Freakin’ unbelievable. Wow. Holy shit. What a way to finish this off. Was really hoping Crow would win MVP just to stuff it up all of these so called hockey experts on Yahoo and ESPN gave Rask the MVP before the season started.
    America! Fuck yeah!!

    • Oregon_hawk

I REALLY wanted craw to get the Conn Smythe.

      • steeg of their own

Hell, I think KANE wanted Crow to get the Conn.

        • cliffkoroll

Kaner used the word ‘snubbed’ in relation to Crow and the Conn Smythe in the postgame.

Also, a great backhanded compliment to Sneaky Dave along the lines of ‘thanks for showing up”.

          • Accipiter

            Thanks indeed.

          • HungryHungryPanda

            From behind a shrubbery!

      • Kevin

Craw had a terrible game 4 and that cost him the Conn Smythe. When you give up 5 goals you don’t deserve it.

I wish he got it because he would have shut up all the ESPN and Boston writers.

        • DuHawk

          He deserved it

        • bizarrohairhelmet

Human’s have outliers. All of them.

    • TheRealBBOX

Shit I wanted him to win to shut up the “HURR DURR EMERY HURR DURR” crowd of Blackhawks fans.

    • Z-man19

      Cheers to BADGER

    • DuHawk

    • CozBullsFan

    • steeg of their own

      Drink to this comment!

      • Accipiter

I don’t see what is so great about the comment, but alright.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

        and MattC’s as well

      • Kevin

It’s not a great comment. I would have to say that this Hawks Stanley Cup winner was far more tougher than in 2010. I enjoyed the one in 2010 more, so go figure.

        • Accipiter

          Kevin, you’re such a disease.

        • The Doctor

What a scumbag you are. Please go back to your cave.

    • Kevin

We beat the best team in Boston. It was tough, but you have to hand it to the Blackhawks. Nice win guys.

    • The Doctor

      A drink for Badgerdano!

      • pepe_silvia

        The West is best!!

  • bizarrohairhelmet

    None more wins.

    • VanDorp’sMullet

How much more wins do we need?

      • 2883

100 pts and 16 more playoff wins next year

    • cliffkoroll

      The answer is none.

  • five_hole_brain

I’m drunk, I’m at home, and I think the only ‘Hawks fan is 700 miles away. GO BLACKHAWKS!

  • sharp is handsome

This makes all the NBA, MLB and NFL players who wear goggles in the locker room after a championship win look like total pussies

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Pittsburgh Penguins, were you taking notes?

    • Z-man19

      they just need some KEENAN

      • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

We’ll never win with Q. Bring Kennan back.

        • Fleshrifle

Keenan was secretly running the team from a bunker in Russia. He’ll get a ring. To match his KHL championship next year.

  • HossBoss

And to to think this season almost didn’t happen.

    • Accipiter

      Oh, but it did.
      And how.

  • Fleshrifle

And those fuckers at the League office almost didn’t let us have this season. FUCK YOU BETTMAN. This playoffs with 4 past champs in the Conf. Finals. All 6 Original Teams in the playoffs. And the 1st Boston/Chicago SCF?!!? We fucking deserved it. Not you, not NBC and not the owners. The fans fucking deserved it.

I noticed that, too. And I’d been feeling like he was dead weight up ’till today.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

well, there were a few game-winning goals that we can’t all-together discount.

      yes he did

    • Fleshrifle

Duncs was a monster. How the hell did they get out of the 1st down only 1?!?!

      • Accipiter

I knew the Hawks had a chance to win after that, just like G2 when the Hawks came out guns blazing and only had a 1 goal lead and couldn’t sustain that pace and ultimately the B’s won.. Actually, the Hawks got 2 goals and would have won G2, so they won 5 games in the SCF.

  • Joe DeTolve

Hey Guys…I just want to say its been a blast…I am so happy right now….Does anyone know where I can find the call…I am a broadcasting nerd and Brownstone didnt have the pa up very loud to hear Doc countdown….

    • bizarrohairhelmet

Right now, in my head. You don’t want to go there.

    • steeg of their own

Radio call is already up here: http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/RadioPlayer.htm?stream=/archives/chicago

nhl.com has Bolly’s winner and the post game, give them a bit and they’ll probably have the end of the game up, if nothing else as part of the highlights package.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

^ That link is quite enjoyable ^

      • Z-man19

I may listen to that before bed for the next month

    So when’s this parade?

    • AMR

Wednesday or Thursday I would think

    • bizarrohairhelmet

      So, Chicago wins the parade

  • putmeinthemadhouse

so…can anyone hook a brother up with a gif of juliens face after bollands goal? it was fucking hysterical.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

yes, please. I was too in shock to comprehend the tv images.

    • Kevin

I was shocked too. I know the B’s were so shocked they couldn’t play anymore. I never saw an ending like that.

      • Accipiter

Kevin, if Uncle Frank says no, then it must be really bad.

  • Fleshrifle

I’m still in shock. How the fuck did that happen?!

    • five_hole_brain

Boston will be asking that for decades.

  • DuHawk

The Hawks scored in bunches all year. Were we really all that surprised that’s how it ended?

    • Fleshrifle

Uh…yeah. Actually yeah. Really shocked. Fucking unreal hasn’t sunk in shocked.

Troy Murray interviewing Zus about the Cup: “It’s been 15, 16 years I’ve been here, and it’s better than I imagined.” Awwwww.

    • putmeinthemadhouse

first couple guys to touch the cup after toews, a couple of grizzly veterans who had never had the chance. if that doesnt make you all warm an fuzzy inside i dont know what will.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

        it do, it do.

      • five_hole_brain

You know what would have made me warm and fuzzy? A three legged terrier wearing a ‘Hawks jersey who was on the roster all year, and when he held up the Cup he peed on center ice because he was so excited.

      • Fleshrifle

I love that about Toews (if that was his call). Hossa last time. Zus/Mayers this time. Awesome.

      • justforkicks

        i love it:

        MarkLazerus
Toews handed Cup to Handzus, then Mayers, then Rozsival, who said, “I guess all the dinosaurs got it first, then the rest of the team.”

      • Kevin

Why was Hossa the first one in line to deliver the congratulatory handshakes to Boston for the Hawks?

        • steeg of their own

Coincidence. Plus he knows Chara, who lined up first for the B’s, so that helped.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Being Chara’s literal neighbor and all…

          • Fleshrifle

How cool will that block party be in Slovakia?

          • bizarrohairhelmet

One side ecstatic, the other side grumpy cat.

          • Country_Bumpkin

Even better since Chara and Hossa are neighbors in Slovakia.

They are like The Rabbi and The Boss.

        • Accipiter

If it makes you feel any better, I forgot my reading glasses.

          • Kevin

How many more Cups do you think we can win? I say 2 more if the nucleus stays healthy, but definitely one more Cup in them …

          • Accipiter

            No predictions here.

          • Why

I will be very happy to just hear descriptions for a while.

      You’re not done yet.

  • Kevin

Tonight will be my last night on here until next year. Can’t wait til next year.

  • pepe_silvia

Wait I thought Tuukka Rask was the best goalie ever and the Hawks wouldn’t be able to beat him.

    Oops.

    • Kevin

He’s the best goalie ever, but somehow the Hawks were lucky to beat him. I thought Boston was far more physical. I still can’t believe we won it in 6 games. Monumental achievement.

      • DuHawk

        Do you work for ESPN?

      • Why

Welcome back, man. I still enjoy your stuff. But I’m kind of enjoying everything right now.

          • Z-man19

            is that Why or Soda?

          • Why

Does it matter? What do you think anyone could possibly say to me that would piss me off right now?

          • CozBullsFan

            Is there a difference?

          • Z-man19

      Neidermeyer…dead

Crow got robbed of the CS, but whatevs I survived this season and didn’t get banhammered.

  • AMR

Re-watching the end of the game. God the pass from toews to bickell was something

    • pepe_silvia

Through Chara’s legs if I’m not mistaken.

    • Z-man19

      Captain is good

      • 1benmenno

I usually argue with you. Can’t this time.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

Tazer coming off the wall was in slow motion for me and I knew it was going in.

      • Accipiter

Keith sauce pass to Toews was really good too. And Kaner, getting into the zone, beautiful.

        • AMR

Toews also had a stick lift that allowed it all to happen

  • steeg of their own

Jonathan Toews: “Keep the bars open–we’re coming home. We’re going to

Those of you in Chi-town who don’t have work tomorrow need to get your asses to a Hawks watering hole. Love that Toews seems to understand that watching the Hawks might/must involve alcohol.

  • AMR

That goal by bolland man talk about right place at the right time. A shot off the post right to bolland. Makes me cry

  • DuHawk

          • DuHawk

            Bingo

  • red palace

    Foley! Clearly enjoying the outcome.

    • DuHawk

Hope you enjoyed the broadcast (not really), we know you enjoyed the outcome (fucking right!)

      • AMR

It wouldn’t be all that bad if it weren’t for McGuire

        • five_hole_brain

I enjoyed him interviewing Chara. Like a fairy on the shoulder of a giant.

          • AMR

            That made me laugh

    • Accipiter

He enjoys everything, he’s always drunk.

      • Kevin

        Foley is a drunk? Really?

        • Accipiter

          So is Keenan.

          • 1benmenno

Keenan would’ve won this cup in a way more satisfying way.

        • steeg of their own

Of course he is. Where have you been for the past few years’ third periods?

  • DuHawk

Wait…what did Foley say about Crow?

    • Z-man19

something about his glove, a little self absorbed there by Foley

      • DuHawk

Yeah, I didn’t much care for that

    • AMR

      Something about his glove hand

      • Accipiter

        WEAK !!!!

        • Z-man19

          below

          • Accipiter

            Just.

        • DuHawk

I’m not going to pretend to be a goaltending expert, but isn’t high glove the weakest spot for most goalies?

          • Accipiter

Anywhere you score a goal is considered a weakness.

          • steeg of their own

Butterfly goalies are inherently weak high glove, because it’s sort of just a fact of the style. Goalies who play hybrid or just do their own thing don’t necessarily have that inherent weakness, but may still have glove problems just because it’s hard to catch pucks going 75+ mph.

          • DuHawk

That was kinda my logic as a non-goaltending expert. My thinking is that as long as Crow doesn’t lose his net & he stays on his angles, he’s pretty damn good.

  • putmeinthemadhouse

kaner chugging bud lite in the locker room.

    NEVER CHANGE

    • Accipiter

But Patrick we have champagne …

      • Z-man19

        he’ll get to that

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

There are two things this 2013 Chicago Blackhawks team could not do.

    1. Execute on the power play.
    2. Lose an elimination game.

    • DesertHawk

Crow’s record in elimination games is truly impressive.

      • Accipiter

Hawks also won 3 in a row to beat the B’s and 2 in regulation time, which hasn’t happen since sometime in May.

        • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Got to admit that one of the things that made me nervous coming into tonight was wondering if it was possible to beat Boston three straight.

    • Kevin

You know, it it had not been for the blown calls in game 2, this Stanley Cup would have been clinched in Chicago in game 5. That’s the shame of all of this.

It would have been great to celebrate it in front of our fans.

  • Z-man19

This team, we shouldn’t be surprised by what they do, but holy shit

    • 1benmenno

Exactly how I felt. And still feel.

  • Hags

    Holiday Road

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

That 17 seconds. Where the hell is that net presence on the Power Play. Not that we need a Power Play, obviously.

    • Accipiter

Kompon knows. He is on a 2 Cup winning streak.

      • DuHawk

He should get launched from 2 consecutive Cup winning teams….

        • Country_Bumpkin

This. Then watch, wherever he lands they will win a cup too.

  • pepe_silvia
    • Accipiter

      I feel responsible, I’m sorry.

  • red palace

    Callin’ out around the world
The Cup is ours and life is sweet!
    Time for celebrating, and parading
We’ll be pantsless in the streets!
Pantsless in Chicago (Pantsless in the streets!)
Down in Texas too (Pantsless in the streets!)
    In New York City

    [Chorus:]
Cheering for our Blackhawks, our Blackhawks
    We’ll be cheering everywhere
There’ll be Dagger playin’, we’ll be swingin’, swayin’
‘Cause we’re pantsless in the streets!
It doesn’t matter what you wear, just as long as your legs are bare
So come on everybody,  grab a ****
    Everywhere, around the ****
We’ll be pantsless, pantsless in the streets!

We’re the loud carousers, without our trousers
    Throwing caution to the breeze
There’ll be shouts and laughs, we’ll be catchin’ a draft
‘Cause we’re pantsless in the streets!
In London UK now (Pantsless in the streets!)
Oregon and Ohio (Pantsless in the streets!)
    Can’t forget Arizona

    [Repeat Chorus]

We’ll be pantsless, pantsless in the streets!
We’ll be pantsless, pantsless in the streets!

Lucky devil. There’s no hockey that I’ve found yet in the midlands.

  • steeg of their own

JR didn’t cry this time, I was disappointed. I did laugh when NBC sent him to interview Claude Julien, though. The only way they could have sent a bigger Hawks fan to the Bruins room is to send Edzo.

  • derlemke

Congrats.. Blackhawks Nation via Asheville, NC is rocking out Y’all!!!! There is a party here!!!!

  • mad-hatter

Don’t know if it’s been posted, but Hossa was playing with a disk problem in his back and couldn’t feel his left foot while playing; Bicks’ had a bum knee; and Bergeron had a separated shoulder, broken rib, and torn cartilage.

    Fuck you, Amonte.

    • ahnfire

      gahhh holy shit.

    • Jenbees

and apparently Zus was all sorts of broken too

          • Z-man19

      • ahnfire

I caused quite a scene, honestly.

        • 1benmenno

          I’m glad to hear it.

    • thefearlessfreep

Hey missed you this year! Recalling now when I ran across the street to the Goose to see all you gals after the Cup was won in 2010. Hope the party was rocking in NYC!

      • ahnfire

ahhh memories! I hope you had a great time wherever you watching!

My birth month has been good to the Hawks the last few years.

  • DuHawk

Well I’m off to bed. Before I leave, I want to thank all of you for welcoming me with open arms this season. As a longtime lurker, it was really intimidating joining up with all of you knowledgeable Hawks fans. I’ve learned a lot & feel like part of the family now. I couldn’t imagine celebrating with a better group of friends. Goodnight, & thanks!

    • Fleshrifle

Sleep well. Your dreams came true.

    • QCBlackhawk

I hope you see this tomorrow. Much Iowa love, and I am glad you decided to shoot the shit instead of lurk!

      • DuHawk

        Noted & much appreciated.

  • Preacher

Someone get a picture of Shaw skating with the Cup with blood running down his cheek. That is the picture of these playoffs!

    • Fleshrifle

It was good. But Bolland’s fear me face when he raised the Cup is going to haunt me for a long time.

  • 2883

HEY I heard that the Eastern Conference was so much better than the Western conference this year…

    • Accipiter

It was. Why do you think it was so hard for Boston to beat the Pens ?

  • steeg of their own

Jonathan Toews was drafted exactly seven years before we won the cup. Coincidence, or Captain Serious? You decide.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

Well, it was his 2nd cup in 7 years…

      • Z-man19

        lazy bastard

    • mad-hatter

Now is a great time to trade Kane and Toews. Think of all the pucks we’ll get!

      • Why

Other teams wouldn’t even be able to practice.

  • DJ

Joe Haggertu of CSN New England on with Boyle and Konroyd. Nice segment. Haggerty’s a good reporter.

His take: Boston got rattled — surprisingly so — after the tying goal. Hawks deserved Cup because their big guns came to play every game.

  • RVWW

Since 1913, two players have captained two Stanley Cup champs at age 25: Wayne Gretzky and Jonathan Toews.

      • Why

I like this stat. This is my new favourite stat.

        • Accipiter

Come on, what about Corsi ?

          • Why

For the next 24 hours, it is a brilliant stat brought to us by people with insight and knowledge that is beyond the typical understanding of most brain-dead fans.

          • steeg of their own

Just for the next 24 hours? So after tomorrow I won’t have to explain to people why a possession stat is superior to +/-, or why ‘scoring chances’ is subjective and often doesn’t predict actual scoring? AWESOME.

          • Why

Between now and tomorrow. I will see you at the next forum at 11:05 (Mountain Time) on Tuesday.

          • Preacher

Corsi doesn’t matter. It’s hits that count.

          • mad-hatter

Oh shit we lost that one. What trophy did the Bruins win for that?

  • JoeGrant

Thanks Committed Indian! great season great insight. I anticipate every issue and stack my $3 of quarters for every visit to the UC. Yesssssss!!!! Blackhawks!!!!!! Thank you Thank you !!!

  • Preacher

Wait, I thought the Bruins were supposed to win this in 7? I thought Rask was the best goalie in the world and Chara was the greatest defenseman ever. Crawford’s glove hand sucks.
(And to think I was worried after what all the experts said before the series.)

  • Z-man19
  • putmeinthemadhouse

I really hope we keep bicks, i dot think itd be an overpayment to give him some money. He has come into his own and would be a shame lose a homegrown talent like that.

    • Kevin

He did nothing in the Finals and I’ll remember that. He also played on a grade 2 knee sprain which is serious.

Still I have to go with productivity:

Guys who were unproductive for the Hawks in the Cup Finals:

      1. Bicks

      2. Hossa

      3. Frolik

      4. Saad (this was sad)

      5. Kruger

      • laaarmer

        Game tying goal. Nothing?

        • Accipiter

He was the recipient of great work by other players. He did nothing !!!!!

          • Z-man19

Watching that again, there were 4 great plays leading to that goal, that was unreal

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Anybody else could have scored that goal as well.

          • putmeinthemadhouse

yea bickell was just the guy holding the stick and recieving the pass,

      • DesertHawk

        I have a feeling I won’t like you… we won, don’t be negative.

      • putmeinthemadhouse

what? he had 4 points in his last 2 games…

      • mad-hatter

You have an odd definition of nothing.

      • Accipiter

        Kevin, you’re completely helpless !

        • Z-man19

          ha

      • steeg of their own

Were you watching the games? 1. Injured but still helpful on the Kane/Toews line, in fact key to several Kane goals 2. Injured but still helpful 3. Do the words ‘shut down PK’ ring a bell? 4. Rookie 5. Rookie

        Get a grip.

      • putmeinthemadhouse

i read this again and…what the fuck. are you being serious at all with this?

      • Fleshrifle

Oh good lord….is that a baby ruth in the punch bowl!?!?

        • Z-man19

Well, that’s productive. Before I had to do this. And now, I do this.

      • lizmcneill

Fro got an assist on the Cup goal, if he hadn’t got Bolly that rebound the Bruins might be headed to Chicago for Wednesday.

  • steeg of their own

Per Kuc: According to @FarhanLaljiTSN, #Blackhawks center Michal Handzus was playing with a broken wrist and torn MCL.”

Holy shit, Zus. I take back all the times I yelled curses at you for being slow or missing shots in the past few games.

    • putmeinthemadhouse

      fuuuuucck

      • Why

I loved that shortie even when it happened.

        • Accipiter

          Even ?

          • Why

Knowing that, the correct word is now “even.” Now, he beat Bergeron on one leg.

          • Accipiter

Now that I read it again, I understand.

          • Why

There is a better way to word 100% of the things I write.

    • Kevin

Never rip a hometown player is what I was always told.

You never know what they are going through as far as injuries. I’m stunned at the injuries he played through to give us the Cup. Wow!!!!

      • Z-man19

        And Hossa?

        • Kevin

I don’t know about him. This guy skipped a game during the STANLEY CUP FINALS! Have you heard what ESPN was saying about him?

You don’t do that in the Cup Finals. Never. If you can walk, you play.

          • RVWW

            He played, meatball.

          • Z-man19

he did play with a bulging disc in his back causing his leg to go numb

          • Accipiter

Amonte ? Is that you Tony ?

          • Kevin

Amonte ripped Hossa’s heart. I didn’t know he had a bulging disc in his back. That’s fucking serious. Wow.

          • DJ

Fuck ESPN. Hossa had a disc issue such that he was unable to feel his left foot. And if you’re still ragging on Hossa after learning that, you can GFY.

          • Kevin

I didn’t know the injury … I thought he was dogging it because he was afraid to get hit. I didn’t know.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

            Look before you leap…

          • steeg of their own

Or you know, just look. He wasn’t playing badly even while injured.

          • Accipiter

He did make me swear at him, once, when he made a terrible pass at a time when getting the puck out of the D zone was the priority. Other than that, it was better to have him in the line up.

          • Z-man19

I actually recall two head scratchers from him, but glad he was out there.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

I saw Hossa makes some mistakes and generally off the weak-on-the-puck variety. At no time did I consider any other cause than he was playing hampered by a substantial injury. He’s Hossa. Why would he just start playing soft now? How do people come up with this shit?

          • DJ

Dunce. If a player dogs it, you find out well before he gets to a SCF. You hear rumors, gossip. It gets mentioned on TSN and HNIC.

Or look at it this way. To a man, every Blackhawk that was asked about Hossa backed him unhesitatingly. They wouldn’t go to the trouble if he was a physical coward.

          • mad-hatter

He couldn’t feel his left leg, you douchenozzle.

    • pompoon

I’m kind of shocked at how fast the injury reports are coming, and how many there are.

      • Kevin

Players play on lacerated organs, broken bones, and ripped tendons. That’s why it’s hockey and why it ISN’T the NFL, MLB, and the NBA.

You have to be tough playing the game and that’s why I love it.

        • pompoon

This is true…kind of surprised I forgot about all that.

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Signing back in to share this. Bollys GWG, latest GWG in SCF history in regulation.

  • steeg of their own

For those of you close enough for it to matter: rumor has it Hawks plane will be at O’Hare at 4am Chicago time, and they’ll hit the bars after that.

    • Kevin

Anyone know where they are going? I need a drink with the boys!! Bring the CUP home!! Wooo Hooo!

      • Accipiter

I don’t know how to pack a suit case. I’ve never done this once in my whole life.

  • LAHawksFan

Although it was truncated, this was a truly amazing Blackhawks season. They came out strong, set a record, won the President’s Cup, and then backed it all up by taking back Lord Stanley’s cup. It has been a joy to watch this team the whole season…and not just because they won, but because of how they won. They did it with heart, poise, and class. Everyone on this team…to a man…is a team player and not just an individual…and that is often rare in sports.

I am proud to be a fan of this team…and I’m proud to be an occasional contributor to this board. I read a lot of sports pages (and often the comments that accompany them), and I have zero doubts about where the best and most knowledgeable fans reside (hint: it’s this one). We may all love our home team, but nobody is too much of a “homer” here. It’s been a fun season with you all. Can’t wait for the next hockey season to begin. Congratulations to the 2013 Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks!!

    • Why

I upvoted and agree with everything you said. Except for that one thing about me not being a homer.

      • Fleshrifle

I agree with everything but the first 2 letters. Beat LA!

        - drinking scotch and raising kids in San Francisco

    • wowwowweewoo

I still hate Quenville… If at least only mildly. The Hawks can’t win another cup going 1 for 17 on the power play. Prove me wrong.

Seriously though, I’m so happy. I’ve only missed 5 games in the last 4 years. I’ve got this board up every game. This team really has been a joy to watch (5v5). But these guys have serious balls. Complete team in a way that few teams in any sport are (our 4th scored the GWG to clinch). What a year. I could keep typing for hours.

Thanks for a great year all!

Tracey Myers: “Governor Quinn says that the #Blackhawks’ Cup parade will be Wednesday.”

Make your plans to call in sick now!

  • Why

Can’t wait for the year end review of players. I suggest all articles be titled: “Why __________ is a Stanley Cup Champion (and other thoughts about his year)”

  • steeg of their own

Sassone quoting Bolland: A Cup winning goal is better than sex, almost.

    • Accipiter

How many CWG’s is Dave going to get in his lifetime ?
It just might be better, but I’ll never know.

  • RVWW

    Friday parade please…. ugh

    • Why

I love this. This is a fair point. Still, when the biggest problem you have with a franchise is “Our Stanley Cup parade is on the wrong day” life is very good.

The Three Amigos and the Bear in Hawk Clothing

Duncan Keith was mad. 2 minutes 14 seconds left, and he was rockin’ a minus 2 in a 2-1 game. Own zone draw- Shaw wins it, Rosival and Keith ping-pong it, Keith puts it on Stalberg’s tape at the Bruins blue line. Stals wheels in, drops it back to Keith, one-timer almost becomes another greasy Shaw goal.

Bruins eventually clear it and Keith recovers it behind the net, 1:35 left. Both teams change. Nice 40 second shift, but nada. Dunc’s over 28 minutes at this point, TOI leader by a longshot once again. But he’s still mad. 30% extra lung capacity activated!

Toews’ line comes out. As if to disarm the Bruins, a kind of shuffling ‘we’re plum out of ideas’ headfake, Keith runs the exceedingly lame, never works, sometimes catastrophic drop pass to Kane in the neutral zone.

Keith runs Krejci off, Kane splits Horton and the Big Bad Bear, walks Seidenberg wide and fires a low shot off Rask into the corner- you know, Conn Smythe type shit. Kane cuts off the boards, getting a piece of Seidenberg’s clearing effort. Krejci gets to the puck, but is squeezed off by
Toews, who nudges it down to Kane.

STOP IT RIGHT THERE! Take a picture.

1:22 LEFT. Extra attacker. Kane, Toews, Keith along the boards, within 10 feet of one another, along with Krejci. Seidenberg closing in. Big Bad Bear parked in the high slot, looking satisfied, for all the world like he just choked down a salmon dinner at the 8 minute mark for what could be the game-winner. In front of the net, Big Bad Tall Bear Who’s Really Too Lanky to be a Bear But Is Still Scary.

Pretty frantic shit. Kaner, of course, slows down the rotation of the Earth or something, amid all the violence, and feathers an 8 mile an hour pass up the boards to Keith, as Toews breaks down low, and Seidenberg, naturally, makes to cross-check Kane into the boards.

Without looking up, Keith flips a pass toward the goal line, past a flailing Krejci, just as Toews is turning. Some Peyton Manning shit right there. Meanwhile, Horton is up the boards cherry-picking or something, and the Two Scary Bears, I shit you not, have not moved an inch in 3 seconds, which is a fuckload of time in a hockey game.

The real puzzler here is that, in that 3 second interval, The Bear in Hawk Clothing breezed right between, I mean there isn’t 10 of feet of room between ‘em, right fucking between the two of ‘em. Nothing Sneaky there (that’s next story.) No sidling up the back door or what-have-you.

The only explanation is that the Two Scary Bears operate by scent, not jersey color.

Belatedly, the Tall Bear makes a lurching move toward Toews. Now, if you know anything about Jonathan Toews, you know he is a lethal 5-hole scorer. Why, earlier in this very game, he smoked My Name Is Tuukka with just such a laser beam for the Hawks only goal.

How trivially, comically, embarrassingly easy is it, I ask you, gentle reader, for Toews to find the 5-hole on the Old Tired Tall Bear? (note- rhetorical.)

Anyhoo, The Hawk in Bear Clothing collects Toews pass and stuffs it through Rask’s 5-hole. The end of Chapter 1.

    • Z-man19

pretty good for an old guy

      • Why

        I eagerly await Chapter 2.

    • steeg of their own

      A+, would read again.

Laughed at ‘peyton manning shit’, but what really puzzles me is why the hell Boston’s D got caught puck-watching, essentially, with less than 90 seconds left in the game. You’ve done it for 58 minutes, it just boggles my mind the kind of breakdown that we saw there.

      • Z-man19

I’ve watched that play like 10 times now, that all happened so quick its absurd, Duncs getting that to Toews on that shit ice, and the pass to Bicks, wow

        • Accipiter

That must be what the B’s thought. Then they conceded defeat.

          • Z-man19

I’d give Chara a break on that one, he basically had a 1 on 3, Lucic might as well have gotten some peanuts

          • Fleshrifle

Boychuk let Bolland slide behind him in the back of the net and then get back to the front of the net. Completely oblivious after Bolland stopped behind the net and then went back to the front. Inexcusable.

        • Why

And I’m remembering phrases and pieces, even if I can’t get the quotes right.

          Toews saying “We exposed Chara.”

We’ll see how Chara responds. Toews should not have said that.

Toews probably concussed. Probably partially because of a Chara elbow.

Toews. Chara to beat. Beaten. Rask to beat. Arms up.

Need goal. Kane weaving. Nice pass. Toews has it. Bickell’s open. Chara between. Perfect.

      • Accipiter

cliff is just looking for upboats, he got mine.

Chapter 1- Pucks on net (Kane), Puck support (Keith), moving without the puck (Toews), finding open ice (Bickell). Game tied.

Last tip of the cap tonight for the season to the best board & blog in sports and to your 2013 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks.

One for the Dagger and another for the one you believe.

Is a drug reference really what you want to go for on a cover about the Hawks Cup and Patrick Kane’s Conn win? I’m side-eyeing you on this one, editors.

Is it just me or is Doug Weight a Bruin homer? He seems so disappointed.

  • jackattack

I joined the commenting community a few days after the Cup win in 2010. 3 years later, here I am, again, stunned, elated, and shocked. The Blackhawks ARE Chicago. The resiliency of a working class city in Middle America. And fuck you if you hate hyperbole, because this is not it. It’s reality. Long Live The Blackhawks, 2013 Stanley Cup Champions, Presidents Trophy Winners, Slayers of Dragons, and Fuck Denis Potvin.

  • roadhog

    I just can’t stop watching . . .

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-h46vxck4g

    Sorry if repost . . .

    • Why

I’m watching Kane stickhandle again and trying to remember an old quote. I think it was Tom Friend on Jason Williams:

90% of the players who have played the game don’t have the skill to do what you do. 9% don’t have the guts to try it in a game. And the other 1% are applauding.

      • roadhog

Kane hooked twice on entry, still gets shot on the net, helps stuff the puck in the corner, then makes the flip off the board to Keith. Lots of Conn Smythe in just that sequence.

        • Why

I’m just wondering who else would even try that. That video is fantastic. You don’t have to take on everybody. You can dump the puck and depend on your teammates. For 90% of the people who have ever played hockey, that’s a bad play at any level. In the last 2 minutes of an elimination game with your goalie trying to get out of the net, it’s insane to even try. Most guys shouldn’t even attempt that play. Kane not only tried it, he turned it into a rush that left the Bruins out of position.

          • roadhog

Pure black magic and determination. Even his shot wasn’t bad, Rask fought it off, but it had a near side chance. It’s really beautiful watching all the Hawks moving to set that up. Some shit you just can’t teach. On top of it, Zus and Seabs are bearing down for a rebound, which didn’t come.

          • steeg of their own

            Voodoo, baby. Black magic child.

          • roadhog

            Tonight’s winners (2) compared to Kane’s 2010 winner, what a contrast.

          • http://twitter.com/Bobby_Otter Bobby Otter

What a play by Kane. Also, thank YOU Lucic and all the Bruins for doing whatever it was you were doing on Bickell’s goal.

          • jackattack

            Thus, Conn Smythe.

          • Why

Fair enough. Still very cool to see. I’m probably missing someone but I can’t think of a single guy who’s defining Conn Smyth moment came on a goal where he didn’t pick up a point.

          • jackattack

            I’m assuming you’re excluding goaltenders.

          • Why

You’ve got a great assist by a goaltender that I’m missing?

  • Accipiter

Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac… It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole!

    • Why

Love Caddyshack, but this was something cooler. Game moves fast and the margins are tight. There’s a cap now. It’s tough to be better than anyone for one night. They were better than everybody for 6 months.

      • Accipiter

        Well, ummmm, yeah.

        • Why

No problems with the reference. I’m trying to think of the proper sports movie context and the closest I can come is the Great White Hype.

    • DesertHawk

I think I actually know this quote.

As opposed to: “Threw one in front, TH… oh my, and then it rattled around and it kicked on back, and then SCORE!?!”

Awwwww. Jammer. From his personal twitter, Mayers writes: What a feeling! 20 yrs ago tmrw I was drafted into the NHL! Today I am a SC Champion! Wow! pic.twitter.com/F2jbJ0FzRZ

The pic is a view of the flight into Chicago. He caught the insanity on Madison from the plane’s windows.

    • Accipiter

I wish all those guys could have played.

      • roadhog

I caught a glimpse on one of the videos of the non-starters coming out of the dressing room, but it was way in the background as everyone skated to Crow. Would love to see video of their faces as they came out and took the ice.

    • hauss

Picture is Clark & Addison (Wrigley Field is lower left) and it came out shortly after the game ended. I’d guess the Hawks plane is still an hour plus out of O’Hare.

      • steeg of their own

Sorry, didn’t mean to misattribute. I only know it was the pic attached to Mayers’s twitter message, so I assumed it had been taken by him. My mistake!

      that’s so lovely.
