In Case Of Emergency

It won’t come as much of a surprise you all, but everything that’s gone on the past few days have killed a lot of motivation to write anything. That won’t last forever, but after days of true horror, true stupidity, and true loss — both in real world and in our little distraction world that’s supposed to bring us at least temporary joy and feeling but instead only brings frustration and weariness — it’s kind of hard to figure out what to say.

But at least in this very tiny corner of the world, we have to start planning. And seeing as how this blog only exists for you, we’d like you to help out.

With lawsuits and court cases making the inevitable seem only a matter of time, what would you like us to fill the idle months with here? Obviously, we’ll still update the Hogs and the Hawks prospects, and I’ll continue with the weekend viewing guides as best I can.

But there’s so much more to fill, and we’re open to anything. So today will just be a thread where you leave suggestions on what you’d like us to write about here when we have no NHL hockey to discuss.

No suggestion will be too absurd or silly. It most certainly doesn’t have to be sports-related. If you want Killion to come on here and talk about what beer he’s brewing at the moment at length, that’s cool. If you want detailed stories about the times my printer has made me cry or left me with toner imbedded in my scalp (in the perfect outline of my hand-print no less), I can do that.

Maybe it’ll turn out you won’t need or want us in the barren stretch that gets bigger and bigger in the mirror with each passing day. But we’d like to be part of it. Tell us how we can.

I have no idea what you should fill the dead air with….

but please, do not shut down for good. Some businesses will be permanently shuttered by the loss of hockey for a while, and I’d hate to see the end of your venture in result of the lockout. That would totally suck.

  • raditzzzz

of course you post this right as i make a suggestion in the morning links section. see below:

“now its truly getting amazing. the possibility of actual decertification.
the nhlpa should remember who is sitting across the bargaining table.
gary f’in bettman. i can’t wait to see him watch the union decertify,
take on all following suits, nuke the season, win those suits, null all
player contracts, and then come back a year from now having destroyed
the league only to claim victory, and have some UFA draft mockery.

come to think of it, sam, you should post an nhl nuclear winter draft
that forecasts how everything might go down, with rosters and
everything. i might even enjoy speculating on the actual contracts. im
already imagining the hawks roster without toews, kane, keith,
seabrook, and instead, lundqvist, brown, letang and suter. good god,
imagine if the deck was actually reshuffled.”

the only other thing i could think of is to start doing threads on topics in hockey play, i.e. controversial plays, game play insight/speculation (i could help out with goalie insight), fictitious accounts of how players are spending their lockouts (ala onion style) and any other attempts at dark humor diversions. my suggestion is to keep it as close to the game as possible. maybe a “reacquaint yourself with the roster” post, because i sure as hell have pretty much forgotten who is even on our team…

I concur with all of this and some of the hockey stuff suggested upthread like forechecking systems etc. That kind of stuff should be easy to keep away from the miserable lockout stuff, surely?

  • raditzzzz

also, a documentary style breakdown (with your usual wit) of how a CI issue comes to life would be kinda cool. give your readers some insight into the behind the scenes process, and what goes on in your head as an issue develops and eventually gets executed. include good stories which occurred while hawking outside the UC.

    • ahnfire

I think this sounds really interesting

  • OMFS88

Your music recommendations have always been helpful. You could probably stand to add some Taylor Swift to the mix but whatevs.

    • mightymikeD

at the risk of getting instantly banned: the last Taylor Swift album is actually OK: it is what it is, obviously, but it’s genuine and well crafted and to be honest I’d rather listen to it than Mumford & Sons, Killers or Muse. Or the latest seeping sore on the arse of music; Of Monsters And Men.. a band that sounds like it was designed by a committee:”OK, slightly off-key whiny male vocal: Check. Breathy Scandinavian Girl singing: Check. Somewhat folky instrumentation.. whoo! a mandolin!: Check. Arcade Fire-style whoops and yelps: Check” Pure Evil. Plus Taylor Swift’s song ‘Sad, Beautiful, Tragic” is Lucinda Williams-Worthy. Trufax.

      • laaarmer

        Like Ever

        • mightymikeD

OK, that one is a POS, granted

  • justforkicks

I’d love some additional insight into hockey period given I’ve still got a lot to learn. Like raditzzzz said below. Maybe we could do some game rewatches and have some “gdts” again plus some talk on strategy etc…like games from our cup run, last years NYR game, etc…(a lot of which can be found on itunes, hulu, or other means). have some what everyone’s watching, reading, listening to threads? idek. I just want this place to keep on keeping on.

    • raditzzzz

jfk, near the end of last season, i started putting together a motherofall hawk footage post, linking to free historic hawks games available on the internet. the lockout dampened me executing that, but i would be willing to resurrect the effort, and get a post going, with the caveat that it help get filled in by contributions from other CI internet trolls with better web crawling skills than myself. hell a community “watch this old school game” night with actual game post thread would make for an awesome experiment. i watched a hawks leafs game on nhl network a month or so ago with espo, hull, mikita, etc. and it was beyond bad ass.

also made me weep for the current situation.

      • justforkicks

that would be amazing, and i’d love to see it resurrected. i’m sure a lot of us could contribute to that. And doing it with the GDTs would be great, hopefully bring a lot of the usual suspects back again too. this lockout is killing me.

  • Preacher000

I’d like to know what Sam’s prognostication is for what we’ll actually end up with if there IS a whole season lost. What will the contract look like when the two sides FINALLY agree on a deal? Or will the owners start up teams using minor league players just so they can have some sort of season next year? And if that happens, what happens to the “real” NHL players? Give us the total apocolypse version of possibilities and the “but-this-is-how-it-will-probably-look” options. And what if it starts to threaten a second season? See? The possibilities are endless!

  • mightymikeD

OK. I thought this question might come up.. I’ll be having my hat for dinner at some point soon as I’d say we’re at thirty seconds to midnight on the season getting cancelled.
I had to take a break from here for a couple of months.. kind of a mix of staying with friends/limited access to ver interwebz/no Hockey/job stuff..

Now I’m housed, have a damn fine broadband connection and (critically) my actual computer shipped over from Ireland so I have my Photoshop stuff again… don’t all cheer at once.
It breaks my heart to see this grand new venture of a website with a mere trickle of activity (compared to the old days) and it’s entirely the fault of the lockout. Terrible, terrible timing but what’s done is done. So, as to what should be going on here.. I definitely think that this should stay as a regularly updated, active site: no Sabbaticals now, please.
What set the old SCH apart, for me, was always the community. While not in the slightest downplaying the excellent writing of the contributers, it was the conversations that kicked off in the comments, sometimes far removed from the actual article, that made me spend a disproportionate amount of time there.
The CI community has an amazingly diverse background: there are people on here whose political leanings and opinions I find utterly repugnant but that I consider friends because of our mutual bond over the Hawks and this site.

So, basically, write about whatever crosses your mind.. ditto for Kills and McClure.. as long as we stay away from politically sensitive stuff, the conversations will continue to happen in the comments and this community will stay alive. Because, if I’m honest, losing the 2012-13 Season would be a much lesser tragedy than losing the CI Family.

I may sound like a hyprocrite, having been away for a while, but we need to get the band back together.. if anyone thinks “Pshaw, it’s just another forum” I encourage them to go find the threads about badgerdano.

So, yes, Sam: write about how you come up with the CI, what it’s like standing outside the UC selling them, what your favourite music is, hell, what your first pet was.
Just keep writing. Then it’s up to us, the community, to continue the discussion.

On another (lower) level I will start creating new material pretty damn soon.. so there’s always that to engage people:

justforkicks: mmD isn’t as funny as he used to be

laaarmer: what do you mean, “funny”?

    peace

    • laaarmer

I meant funny Ha Ha. You amuse me

      • mightymikeD

    • stacie7

Well hello there MMD. I see laaaarms has already welcomed you back :) I think once hockey comes back the people will too. I know I haven’t personally had much to say because I’m too bummed about the subject at hand. Happy times will certainly get the band back together.

      • mightymikeD

hello Stacie! Hope all is good with you! And yeah.. I predict the first Hawks GDT, whether this season or next, having a flood of returning faces..

    • justforkicks

mmD, how you been!!!! good to see you back. I guess we’ll see how funny you are when you finally post an mmD original again.

      • mightymikeD

all good, lady. Busy like a MF. Great to be back and Original mmD Nonsense due soon..

        • justforkicks

glad to hear all of that =)

    • Z-man19

      Do we know you?

      • mightymikeD

and the horse you rode in on…
        admit it, you missed me!

        • Z-man19

Miss you? Do the Irish like sheep?

          • Z-man19

Oh wait, the Welsh like sheep, the Irish like goats, sorry

          • mightymikeD

is “Goats” Norteamericano slang for “Beer”?

          • Z-man19

            Aye

          • mightymikeD
          • Z-man19

God I’ve missed that, I see you have expanded your selection. Ahn might even like that one

          • ahnfire

Even with the move & lockout, I still can’t get rid of you two.

            I’m cursed forever, aren’t I?

          • Z-man19

            Blessed more like it :P

    • The_FFF

Welcome back! Good to see you!

  • laaarmer

Let’s disqus (get it?) the best forechecking system. 1-2-2, 2-3, 1-3-1, 2-1-2. Which is it for you?

    • StealingHappyHour

You setting up a NHL 13 team homeslice?

      • laaarmer

No, fantasy sports don’t interest me that much. I just want to hear what some other “knowledgeable” people think of different systems

    • upsetmoderate

      5-0 defense is for communists

    • Accipiter

      2-2-1 or 3-1-1.

      • laaarmer

OK? Personally I like the 2-3 press.

  • StealingHappyHour

    Make DTM a guest blogger.

  • laaarmer

Here’s another. Is the NHL going to be a “right to work” league?

  • Quark

You should write about the places in Chicago that are meaningful to your hockey/sports experience or even to Chicago sports in general. As a relatively new Chicagoan and hockey fan (Winter Olympics 2010), I’m playing catch up on simple things like trying to find the best places to watch a game. The amount of “Blackhawks” bars I’ve been to that relegate the game to their third or fourth TV behind some Knicks-Heat game is absurd.

Maybe this is a good time to flesh out some of these basics. I’m not limiting it to bars and restaurants either. Killion name dropped his playoff beard barber last season. I feel weird remembering that, but it shows there’s a lot of ground you can cover if you want. It’d give the bars and restaurants that might not have quite as much traffic this year some extra awareness. It’d also give me something to trek out to while I’m not watching hockey. Readers could contribute too.

Or, you know, album reviews or something.

    • Quark

I’d actually be fairly happy with album reviews.

    • justforkicks

this isn’t actually all that interesting, but Winter Olympics 2010 is when I got into hockey as well!

  • raditzzzz

2012 mayan apocalypse coinciding with nhl lockout…coincidence? i think not.

    • laaarmer

The idea for hockey comes from the “Mayan ball game”

      • raditzzzz

is that why i never heard of michael leighton ever again? did they cut his head off for losing that one game…

        • mightymikeD

even worse: they made him Byzgalov’s back-up..

          • stacie7

Now that Bryz is an astronaut maybe he just shot Leighton into space.

          • raditzzzz

even worse: they made him bobrovsky’s backup…

  • roenicktookmyfirstname

i don’t care what you talk about, i’m still going to read your stuff. just keep writing.

  • BodomSlayer

I liked the open music threads? How about album reviews? Even better…since mmd is back and he pronounced his love for Taylor Swift how about we just rag on him? I’m kidding! We can go a game at a time and relive the 2010 season. I’m sure video highlights will be easy to find on YouTube.

    • laaarmer

      Better yet, let’s relive 1991. Or 1972.

      • laaarmer

Really though, do you remember the angst from the month March of the 2010 season? the line generator? Kaner’s taxi ride? It was the not so best of times, at times.

        • BodomSlayer

The line generator…oh what I wouldn’t do to be bitching about the line generator right now.

        • ahnfire

          you mean the limo pics?

          ahh memories.

      • Z-man19

Christ Laaarms, most of these people weren’t alive in 72

        • laaarmer

Well I was. Fucking shit that was.

          • Z-man19

All of 72 or just certain events? 72 was kind of a shitty year

  • 334Rules

I’ve been too dejected about the missing hockey to read much of what’s been going on here — though I’ve looked in from time to time. I have also barely spoken to a very good friend of mine who happens to also sit right in front of me at games. When I did see him a week ago I told him it was too depressing to talk to him, because all I could think of was how much fun we were missing in the 300 level of the UC.

But if you guys can manage to write something – anything – non hockey related, I would be happy to read (and contribute to the threads where appropriate). As many folks have already noted, the wide range of stuff that comes up here over the years has been at least as rewarding as all the hockey stuff. From obscure metal and prog rock references, to SciFi geekdom, to visits from the grammar police, you can almost always count on something (hell, you all even taught me a little about HTML posting — and I am damn near a luddite).

    So please, carry on!

  • http://twitter.com/AJNeilan1 A.J.Neilan

So… I’ve been a LONGTIME! (about over a year now, at least once a day) SCH/CI lurker and only now have I stepped up and said hello, so hello! I think something this site could talk about, besides all the really good ideas other people had, is such things as having posts on memorable hawks games, playoff series, rivalry moments etc(recaps, video or otherwise) that you’ve been to, things that make you keep coming back to the NHL after all this heartbreak, great interesting stories about being a Hawks fan or Chicago sports fan in general and living in the city or around the country. Stuff like that would be fantastic…

Oh and some coverage on the WJC and our prospects (Cmon Tevo!!!) would be really fantastic as well, all my hope for hockey this winter hinges on that tournament, and Im rather excited for it for the 1st time

    • The_FFF

      Welcome!

  • hawksinfour

How about something on the activities of a Patrick Foley this late fall and early winter season. Actually someting on any of the many “voices” of Blackhawk hockey.

    • Z-man19

Pat Foley has been drinking and telling golf stories, just a guess

  • The_FFF

    Yes, beer.

I also like to talk about books.

    • mightymikeD

      this

  • johnnynewguy

Focus a ton on College Hockey!!

  • kcrvpn

Your musical references are always interesting, so I would second the music review requests. Some historical posts would be interesting; I didn’t pick up the Hawks as a fan until I moved to Gary from New England in 1990. I have missed quite a bit of Hawks history/lore.

Following the Hogs like the Hawks would also work. I am in Memphis — stuck with the Mississippi River Kings in a hockey league so bad that if it were to be locked out, the quality of play would improve.

  • 2883

Just do what you know. My best advice would be to do what you know, aka someone get whichever one of you earns all of those badges for drinking, to write beer/whiskey reviews…

  • Raskolnikov

Topic–Killion’s most interesting stories in his job, including failed sales tactics, great successes, drunken idiocy at the GABF, etc.

Title–Killion’s Kold Kalls (or Killion’s Cold Calls if you don’t like the abbreviation of the first idea)

  • caveman

Hey there folks, first time caller, long time listener. I’ve been a lurker here and at SCH long enough that I feel dirty about it. Figured its time for a voice. So. As a homebrewer and total beer geek, I, for one, would love to hear what Kills is brewing up. And in great detail too! Also, this has been bugging me for months. Who drives the jeep with hawks plates SCH 10? Figured somebody here knows, or would also appreciate the coincidence. Anyway, hello, thanks for being totally rad, it helps make the workday pass.

    • The_FFF

Welcome! Oooo, a homebrewer! What’s your specialty?

      • caveman

Ales. Good ones. I do a lot of imperials. I brew what I like, and i like big, bold brews. Any other brewers here?

  • Sapper84

A weekly thread discussing favorite SyFy channel made for TV movies…I’d have to go with Sharktopuss or Yeti: A Love Story

  • AirTrafficAJ

I know it’s a hockey site and all, but feel free to branch out to other sports. The Committed Idonoje stuff is gold, but as spring training rolls around, it wouldn’t hurt to get all Cubs and Sox up in this. Also: why not some college hockey to fill the void? As far as non-sporting things go, you guys should have a “nerd corner” to talk about all the stuff we know you love (movies, books, comics, etc…)

Lastly: Don’t give up. As Harvey Dent once told me: “The night is darkest just before the dawn”. Of course, he had half of his face exploded, so I don’t know if that’s the best reference. But still.

  • TheFullAmonte

Beer is always a great topic, and I have just recently started home brewing so anything Kills talks about related to that I would find interesting. Also if you could do a satirical/snarky book “review” of Jeremy Roenick’s book I am sure it would be quite entertaining.
