NHL: San Jose Sharks at Chicago Blackhawks

History Now, Footnote Later: Sharks 1 – Hawks 2

So there it is. The Hawks officially have the longest points-streak (or unbeaten streak) to start a season in NHL history. This one isn’t even tainted by the NHL’s new-ish format (mostly), as the Hawks haven’t lost in OT even. Under the old system — y’know, one that made sense — the Hawks would just have three ties to go with their 14 wins.

It’s cool to say now. I guess I’m glad it happened. But in a few months, it’ll either be a nugget that goes along with something we’ll remember much more fondly and distinctly, or it’ll be a marker for what could and probably should have been. It’s a record that is designed to be buried by what comes after it. After all, can you name who has the most wins to start an MLB season? You can’t. It’s the ’82 Braves and ’87 Brewers. And I had to look that up, because neither went on to win anything.

But we’ll enjoy it for now. Tonight’s game — and I don’t mean to draw a comparison to the quality of the teams — had a feel of a Bulls game during the height of the Jordan Era. There’s this misconception among some in town that the Bulls were up 30 after every 1st quarter in those years. But that’s now how it worked. Generally, the Bulls would have the other team hang around for a half, maybe even well into the 3rd quarter while the Bulls sought the urge to care or at least stop concentrating on what casino or club or hosebag they were going to get on that night. Then a 16-2 run would just appear out of nowhere, and it was game over and Jordan was sitting on the bench laughing with Pippen halfway through the 4th.

Again, these Hawks are not Jordan Era Bulls. But tonight had that feel. The Hawks played with the Sharks for most of two periods. Letting them have a bit too many chances, and not working quite hard enough in the other end to cause the roof to cave in. Then in six game minutes the Hawks had two goals, and it never really felt like the Sharks were going to tie it.

And that is that. To the….

Observations And Reflections

-Dan Carcillo’s one or two shifts caused something of an uproar from those on the meatball side of the ledger and those not. It probably had to do more with lines being jumbled due to penalty killing and Brandon Saad taking Bolland’s spot on the kill.

Luckily, Saad showed everyone why he’s battened down that first line role. His hesitation and exploitation of the space the ever-bewildered looking and playing Brent Burns gave him shows a scorer’s instinct that will lead to many goals one day. He was the most active forward on that line tonight. Saad had hit something of a wall the past few games, which is understandable in his first full season in pro hockey. Here’s hoping tonight sparks a second wind, as he answers a lot of the questions the Hawks have about sizable forwards.

-Until the Hawks started conga-lining to the penalty box, I thought Nick Leddy was having a strong game. Three end-to-end rushes and a few more times he skated the Hawks out of trouble in their zone. But much like Kane, when they pile up the penalties that causes Leddy to lose rhythm. And he’s more than a little part of the Hawks’ overall rhythm.

-For the first half of the game, Q chose to match Bolland’s line against Thornton’s. And they got buried. There were at least three shifts where they spent the entire shift in the defensive zone. Considering how well Kruger, Frolik, and Shaw are playing, it may be that Bolland’s line is the last line that should be considered for top checking duties right now. Whenever Bolland is healthy again.

-With a minute to go and the Sharks with the extra man, Q sent out Kane, Shaw, and Kruger. I guess the reason was….um….hey look over there!

-Dear God the United Center ice sucks. Again, I just want someone in the organization other than a player to admit it sucks. Only after you admit you have a problem can the healing begin.

-Toews won 15 of 19 draws.

-Kane’s been a strange study lately. He’s shied away from contact the past few games at times, and then there was that whole Wingels thing. Can’t have it both ways, kid.

-Andrew Shaw and Ryane Clowe in the last 10 seconds. Is that just about the biggest stupid-off you can have?

Jackets and Oilers next. The Hawks could put this streak in the clouds if they so choose.

Thanks for the late night post game write up Sam.

Their commitment to deal to the addicts is admirable.

  • Hdndndje

Not to be a downer, but with ties the Hawks would be 12-0-5 wouldnt they?

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

True, but that has no effect on the points streak, just on how many points we’d have.

  • DesertHawk

I can’t name 95% of the teams in the MLB either…

  • The Doctor

I was really disappointed to see Carcillo replace Saad at times during the game. We were only down a goal and he was already messing with a winning formula.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

I think he was looking for some energy on the top lines. Fortunately he figured out that Carbomb doesn’t have the jets to keep up with 81-19

      • wowwowweewoo

I have a theory that Q is an evil genius and did it to piss Saad off. Q – “look at this asshole skating in your spot Saader. He’s even got a bum knee. What are you gonna do about it?”

        • Accipiter

          Duh. I’ll score a SHGWG.
          Kneel before Saad !!

      • Bannerman

Carcillo looked very brunette-ish out there.

  • jackattack

Seabrook played like a wizard tonight. He was the most effective player on the ice for swaths of the game tonight.

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Good bullets Sam. Now get some sleep.

  • DesertHawk

Whoa… when did a full recap show up… I only saw two paragraphs at first.

  • wardrums

    perused the box score…

I can’t recall when I’ve seen a wierder division of playing time. I think we had a couple of d-men barely over 20 minutes and everyone else appeared to be 18 or under.

What an incredible run. Take a look at out three stars tonight. We are no longer just 18/19/81

    Congrats you mighty Blackhawks!

    • Z-man19

The TOI numbers look more like a game you win 6-2 than a 2-1 win. They do play 3 games in 4 days, but still

I’m glad someone else mentioned the Shaw-stupid happening with almost no seconds left. In my mind, Q and entourage making a beeline for the room as the horn sounded looked a lot like people with heads on their shoulders with intent to scold. Refreshing to see.

  • QCBlackhawk

I just got back from Chicago to Iowa, and holy balls it was a fun game after the first.
Watching Kane casually dismiss Marleau with a glove to the face later right next to his own bench was fucking hilarity.

  • Toews still makes funny faces!

I think Columbus can actually steal a term from Smashville if the Hawks aren’t careful.

  • wowwowweewoo

I agree about the second line getting buried by opposing top lines, but I think it’s a symptom of letting the lines roll. It’s the opposing coach that’s working that match-up. One part of me says it’s a short season so in the interest of keeping everyone fresh and forcing Kane/Sharp to tune up their defense early in the season, let them roll. The other side of me says I want Kane to score ALL THE POINTS, work the match-up. I’m sure this will be addressed come playoffs, than look out, cause it’ll be a joy to watch.

  • cliffkoroll

‘in a few months… it’ll be a marker for what could and probably should have been.’

    STOP IT RIGHT THERE!

I stand before you with a message of hope and joy: the Hawks are without a doubt the most enjoyable thing about the NHL. Don’t believe me? Read any account of any game from the other team’s perspective. They fucking gush. And they should. The skill and beauty on display, night after night. This is what we must cherish in real time.

Even during the previous two seasons, despite the lapses and inconsistency, this team has been a joy to watch. Granted, the punch lines have been a nasty cock punch, and two years ago particularly I recall walking out of the UC on many nights with bile in my throat. But, after all, it wasn’t so very long ago that this team was a puddle of urea.

All the winning this year makes it better still of course, but these are the same guys, for the most part, we’ve been watching since 2008. I am very grateful to be a Hawks fan.

Maybe it’s a Chicago thing- the ‘hunt for misery’, that leads to a wave of ‘don’t mean a thing without the ring’ memes I awoke to this morning.

Nonsense! Fiddlesticks! Claptrap! Folderol! Enjoy the ride, and appreciate following a team with a serious shot at winning the Cup, cuz there are only a handful of such teams.

But Sam, this ‘probably should have been’ business. Sir, you go too far. While I desperately want to see the Hawks win another Cup, and I feel some urgency cuz this year might be their best shot (see how teams like San Jose and Detroit have crested and are now backsliding- this could be the Hawks in a couple years), I don’t delude myself that they are a lock or even a 50/50 bet, so ‘probably should have been’ is setting yourself up for a bout of misery in June and unnecessary angst today and the risk of not appreciating what we have in front of us.

Enjoy the moment, and hope for the best!

    • DesertHawk

The voting seems all wonky, upboated. Not sure why you’d be downboated at all. But seriously folks, we have good hockey in Chicago again. Grump less.

    • Skags

      Hear, Hear!

      Well said Cliff.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Hardly a surprise. The NHL is never better than when O6 teams are doing well, and the Hawks have some highly photogenic personnel and no real hated goon (except possibly for Carcillo).

    • mightymikeD

Beautiful. But I really have to ask you to watch your language.. there’s impressionable young minds on here and they don’t need to be hearing words like “Folderol” or next thing you know they’ll be calling their schoolwork “Piffle” and telling their grandmothers that the cookies they’ve just baked are “Tosh”… and so the world ends.

    • Hawkeytalk

It’s the journey and not the destination or some banal tripe, but yeah, this. They have been a joy to watch for the last five years, like the 90s Bulls and the 00s Sox. It’s great theater that I can’t get enough of.

    • Waylon

I agree with all of your points, but I think some of the grumpiness comes from fans worried that the team may become a little too cocky for their own good, but then again with leaders like Toews perhaps that’s energy wasted at this point.

    • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

And enjoy Bickell and Leddy along the way! Right, cliff?

      And nice post. Rec whore.

    • Paul the Fossil

Well said. For last night’s game I had over three guys who are not serious hockey fans, well two who aren’t and one who is closer to it. Anyway a couple of times they commented, “It’s kind of like with the ’85 Bears or the Jordan Bulls isn’t it?” Now of course we’re all aware that there are other less-happy examples that would be on the same list, like that Patriots team a few years ago that ran the table until getting upset in the last game. But that’s life, and Cliff’s point remains sound: let’s try to enjoy this. The fans of 29 other NHL teams would be rolling their eyes right now at hearing us fret and whine and find stuff to grind our teeth about.

  • Hi, I’m Bob LeDonne
  • Skags

Power-play looks good. Even though they didn’t score, they generated some great chances. Baby steps…

    • Accipiter

Meh, I still thought they could have moved more and the player in front of the net needs to block the goalies sight lines instead of standing beside him, but as you say, baby steps.

      • Z-man19

I’m not sure Stals is the right guy for that job. Throw Bicks out there, if nothing else he’s a bigger body

        • Country_Bumpkin

What really is Bick’s purpose out there? He almost killed Burrish last night with that check into the corner near the bench. He just takes up space IMO.

          • Waylon

Bickell is likely the most improved player on the team in the past two years, not including Stals. HIs job is to be a physical presence on the ice, particularly on the forecheck – and the guy’s got some offensive skills as well.

          • Z-man19

and he’s the most cap friendly player on the team. Bollig makes more $ than Bickell does. For what the Hawks pay him, Bickell does exactly what you would want him to IMO

          • Country_Bumpkin

When I see him he seems to take dumb penalties and looks like he’s skating in molasses. I will watch him more in the game vs. CBJ. I guess I just missed something.

          • Z-man19

Bickell has taken 2 penalties this year and one of those was for fighting after he hit Thornton(?) and someone else dropped the gloves with him. So, no he hasn’t taken a lot of dumb penalties this year. Again, he’s the lowest paid player on the team and a 3rd line guy, the 3rd line has been good, no?

          • Country_Bumpkin

All right you’ve made your point. I don’t hate the guy I was just making a comment that was obviously uninformed.

          • Z-man19

Don’t worry about it, CNS had to make the same point to me last year

          • DesertHawk

            To lots of people :D

          • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

I actually paid attention to Bicks every time he was on the ice last night and he was a contributing factor to how we were able to turn around the game. He skated hard every shift and physically wore several of the Sha-arks out with hits and aggressive skating. I prefer him being unsung because we couldn’t afford him at a higher price.

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Two things: Q seemed ready to rip Shaw a new one as they were leaving the ice.

And Carcillo, after his experiment on the top line failed, was quickly pulled from that line and wound up the low man in minutes.

This looks more like old Q: you make a physical error, okay, you make a mental error, enjoy yourself some bench. Boo likes.

  • Skags

The Hawks now have the all time NHL record to start the season? I like your comment? Have an upboot.

  • Z-man19

“With a minute to go and the Sharks with the extra man, Q sent out Kane, Shaw, and Kruger. I guess the reason was….um….hey look over there!”

Just an observation here, but didn’t the sharks not enter their zone for most of the last minute? Those three guys wouldn’t have been my first choice either, but hard to argue with their sucess

    • Skags

      The last couple minutes, IIRC.

  • Hawkeytalk

Was it just me or was Thornton hardly mentioned? He did play, right?

    • Skags

I thought he played OK. Havlat was their best player though; he did not want to lose that game.

      Couture… he played right?

      • Hawkeytalk

He’s another one I hardly heard mentioned. But then again, we had people over to watch with all the accompanying distractions. I remember Havlat more in the first than the subsequent periods.

The Hawks also got more physical as the game went on. That last 10 mins of the third, wow.

    • QCBlackhawk

I mean, he was part of what made their goal happen. I wouldn’t say he was playing his ass off, but he wasn’t invisible

    • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

Were you also calling the game?

      • Accipiter

        • Z-man19

          hmmm, shanninigans, I sense them

  • DesertHawk

Read an article on Yahoo about us breaking the record. Looked at the comments (the horror I know) saw some Canucks fans actually congratulating us, which was cool. But the thing that really stuck out was the delusional Eastern Conference fans, who believe that if we’d played some EC teams we wouldn’t have broken the record…. clearly they haven’t paid any attention to the WC vs EC standings in the last several years.

    • The Doctor

Not only that but our record against the east last year was 12-3-3. Delusional is right.

      • DesertHawk

But they has the Crosby and Ovechkins… they can not be defeated!!!

  • Z-man19

Clowe has to talk with Shanny about his actions last night

    • http://twitter.com/llUrbanAchiever Jeff Lebowski

It sounds like he could get smacked pretty hard by the Shanahammer. 10 games for leaving the bench to start a fight? I’m sure it’s an effort to avoid bench-clearing brawls, but that seems a little harsh. Then again…Clowe seems to think he’s involved in the play even when he’s on the bench. Remember this?

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_WXlHcCLoI

    • Country_Bumpkin

That was a dumb ass penalty by Shaw but Clowe leaving the bench was really dumb. Lost his shit he did.

      • Z-man19

could cost him 10 games, I doubt it will but it could

        • Accipiter

SJ’s Ryane Clowe suspended pending hearing on Monday. Clowe will not play tonight in DAL but HC Todd McClellan will be behind bench. One option is auto 10-game suspension but that carries with it one-game suspension for head coach. McClellan coaching is coaching tonight. Clowe has been offered in-person hearing, which would allow NHL discretion to suspend 6 or more games if it chooses.

          • Z-man19

I saw a $10,000 fine for coach and team but nothing about a 1 game suspension for coach.

          • Accipiter

Since he is coaching tonight, it won’t happen, but it could have.

          • Z-man19

The sad part is, had the officials called a penalty when Shaw got tackled behind the net about 10 seconds prior to him hitting Pavelski, this never happens

          • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

Hawks got several favorable non-calls earlier in the game. Wonder if Toronto ever calls at intermissions and gives the on ice officials a little ‘direction’…

          • Z-man19

I was thinking more along the lines of ‘this game is over, why call the penalty’

          • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

or not wanting to be the wet towel on what might have been a crazier finish.

  • Country_Bumpkin

OT. How come Hansen got a one game suspension for roughing, but Taylor Hall got two games for kneeing? Wouldn’t a shot to the head constitute more than a shot to the thigh/knee? I don’t get it.

I once managed a hotel AV department and spent quite a bit of time hanging out in my office during events in case an emergency arose. I probably watched each Mr. Show episode 5 dozen times so they’re pretty ingrained in the membrane.

          • DesertHawk

Came out before my time. Some of the ones I’ve seen are funny, like the above. Others, not so much.

      • AMR

I’m not sure its bettman, I think its more likely the NHLPA. Last years attempt had Detroit in the “conference” with the Hawks, but the NHLPA dismissed it

    • Z-man19

Conf 1 and 4 are stacked

      • birdhead

I feel bad for Carolina if this goes ahead in the next couple years. They’re not a bad team but in that division they’ll look like one.

        • Z-man19

How about Columbus, sure they get to move east but ouch

          • birdhead

well they get to play the Islanders!

          • birdhead

Conf 4 a bit more evenly spread out. Bloodbath every year for the next little while.

I guess long-term it all evens out, sometimes some conferences will be stacked and sometimes it’ll be the other conference and that means that things like TV matchups and time zones and rivalries are more important when planning this kind of thing but man. IDK. What’s wrong with the current system? Just swap Columbus and Winnipeg.

          • Z-man19

Detroit is the hairball there. I wonder what the schedule and playoff format will look like

          • DesertHawk

Also the whole West has better playoff odds and they’re gonna use math to even the disparity…. lets not add more non hockey bullshit that decides who wins the cup.

          • Chesterfield King

plus, if they aim to eventually even it up via expansion, that would sort of preclude an expansion team in Quebec or Ontario, right?

          • Z-man19

They must feel somewhat confident the Yotes are staying in Phoenix

          • Chesterfield King

I’ve been reading some articles that were of the opinion that the NHL was looking not just for relocation but expansion as well

            Or moving to Seattle.

          • Z-man19

Not necessarily, the wild card could be a team from any conference. Say 3 teams from each conf make playoffs, then the next 4 best records

          • Z-man19

They are calling these 4 conferences not divisions

          • DesertHawk

Valid, still don’t like it, and it’s dumb. :pouts:

          • Z-man19

Short term, it’s good for the hawks IMO, conference isn’t that strong, less travel maybe depending on scheduling. I’m thinking you play conf teams 6 times and everyone else twice, there’d be some extra games in there but something like that

          • Chesterfield King

Playing dallas more often might give me even more headaches

          • Z-man19

            Too many stars?

watch yo mouf. Playing Dallas more often means more games for me.

          • Z-man19

Those games will be sell outs

      • ballyb11

        Wait 2 years.

        It’ll be 2 & 3 that are stacked.

    • Chesterfield King

I’d like playing Colorado more often.

    • Toews still makes funny faces!

First the Hawks lost playing the Leafs in the ole’ Norris under Bettman. Now the shithead wants to remove Scum from the Hawks Division. For real, that is BULL SHIT!!!!!

      • Toews still makes funny faces!

IMO, splitting up SCUM and the Hawks would be like splitting up the Bears-Packers or Cardinals-Cubs or White Sox-and and and and…….. well, you get my point. It just ain’t good or right!!!!

        • Z-man19

Let’s not forget which of those 3 teams last brought joy and elation to Chicago

          • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

            none of the above

          • Z-man19

            Of THOSE 3

          • TheFullAmonte

Is it “and”? AKA whoever is beating the White Sox?

          • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

            The Packers?

    • DesertHawk

      Speed, ? , Trap, Trap, Stupid/Trap, Terribad.

Why don’t they just move Nashville to the southeast and Winnipeg to the Central and be done with it?

So speaking of expansion and movement, what other business would Ford and his minister of finance have attending a game at the UC? Pleading complete ignorance here, but assuming that no one could own two franchises, couldn’t Rocky still build another arena in Toronto? I’ll tip my tinfoil hat to anyone with a better explanation.

  • Toews still makes funny faces!

I think the Hawks have a pretty good Hockey Team this year.
I think we should keep them together for a little bit and see what they can do. Who knows, maybe they can impress us or something.

Whoa, I missed that Clowe had left the bench to jump on Chickenhawk at the end last night. Sounds like he’s gonna pay for it, he missed tonight’s Sharks game (autoplay):

Clowe is having one of those seasons that pave the way for an early NHL retirement. Scoring yips and the propensity to take stupid penalties aren’t generally desired assets…except maybe in Phoenix.

Crazy long shoot out in the ECHL. The vid at the bottom has a pretty awesome shoot out goal as well.

Rocky knows mad sluts. Ford always be up ins where mad sluts are at.

Realignment can’t come soon enough, looking at the two ‘weak sister’ divisions, the NW and the SE. Without seeding, first place Tampa Bay would be just clinging on to 8th on goal differential. Over in the West, Minnesota’s 18 points in second place in the NW would be good for last place in the Central or Pacific.
