Hey, The Kids Are Playing!

While we stare at people having a staring contest waiting for one of them to blink so we can have something to talk about again, some of the Hawks prospects have actually strapped on the skates in anger. I know, it’s a reach here. But we might as well check in with some of the kiddies.

Phillip Danualt’s season with Victoriaville has kicked off, and he’s got a goal and an assist in two games. Danault doesn’t seem to get the pub that Saad or McNeil or now Tervainen does, but  those in the know say his Blackhawks future is as secure as any of those. I know from just at Prospects’ Camp he stood out as much as anyone. Our man Chris Block, our go-to guy for Rockford info, says Danault didn’t look out of place there in his brief trial at the end of last season. He may never pan out to be anything more than a third-line center, but his awareness and doggedness could see him in an Indian Head sooner than anyone’s talking about. Don’t be shocked if he’s one of the two or three players the Hawks pull out of the CHL for whenever their training camp begins.

Mark McNeil has begun his last campaign in the WHL as well, and also has two points in two games for Prince Albert. McNeil has a lot to prove this season. His mark as the Hawks’ top prospect has been usurped by Saad, Teravainen, and possibly Danault. I thought he looked slow and lazy when I’ve seen him, but then again I haven’t seen him in anything that matters yet.’

Speaking of Teravainen, his season starts tomorrow night with Jokerit. Did you know that Jokerit’s logo is a jester? Yeah. it’s kind of funny.

And that’s kind of it. The college season hasn’t started yet, the prime prospects like Saad, Morin, Olsen and a couple others have progressed to Rockford and are awaiting training camp which begins Sunday, and the rest are in Europe where it’s impossible to get anything in passable English.

I would expect the Hawks to include: Danault and McNeill at a minimum. (you can recall up to 3 from the CHL) .. Another name that might surprise you could be Fournier but the Hawks probably let him consolidate his success from last year with another year in the Q.

I’ll probably get ripped for this but Phillip Danault strikes me as a similar player to what Michael Frolik was billed as. He’s not going to be a flashy 30 G player but he can contribute offensively while still being a solid 2-way player. As such, he might not receive the heaps of praise that other (more offensive prospects) might get. That said, I think he’s also one of the safest Hawks prospects in the system, he probably is the most likely TO contribute.

Now that I’ve said this, I fully expect him to flame out.

    • ahnfire

why would you get ripped for comparing him to FrolikNavidad? I think poor FroFro gets ripped on because he came with high but unrealistic expectations- but he’s not a bad player. He’s just not what most people here thought he’d be. Unless that’s what you’re saying will happen to Danault.

      • 2883

No I think Danault is what Frolik was billed as… if you look at what HF said about him, try to remember how Frolik was billed.

Danault has consistently improved his game since last summer and is
among the top-tier of forward prospects in the organization. His
        non-stop motor, versatility,
and outstanding skating ability make him an ideal top-nine forward for
the Chicago lineup. He is aggressive yet reliable enough to succeed in a
checking role, and he also possesses the speed and skill to skate in a
complimentary role on the scoring lines when the opportunity presents
itself. His energy, work ethic, and leadership are the intangibles
coveted at the pro level, where every night is a tough match-up.

Danault was assigned to Victoriaville, where he serves as the team’s
captain, but the Blackhawks may still be planning on having him attend
training camp if the lockout is lifted. Any time he spends with the
Tigres will see him skate significant minutes in all situations, which
is never a bad situation for a developing prospect. His versatile skill set and impressive play over the last few months has vaulted him among the top prospects in the Blackhawks system.

If I removed Danault and replaced it with Frolik and removed all the CHL stuff, you could imagine I was talking about what Frolik was supposed to be. Unfortunately people tend to remember what Frolik was last year… not what he was in Florida (where anyone can get 20 G’s..)

        • Accipiter

Yeah, even TomoKop got 20 G’s last year in Florida.
          ( he got 10 G )

          • Chesterfield King (Chelsdag)

I thought he just slipped and lost his helmet 20 times last year

          • hair helmet

only 20? He must be getting old.

        • StealingHappyHour

You need to listen to more Chris Block podcasts. Educate yourself son.

          • 2883

How so? What is wrong with comparing Danault to Frolik? He was the captain of his CHL team and one of the better developing Hawks prospects last year?

          • StealingHappyHour

Nothing wrong with comparing them, I just think you’re wrong. Frolik WAS billed as a potential 30 goal guy (contrary to your original post) when he was coming up with Florida. The defense just sort of came.

Nobody is saying Danault is going to score 30 goals year in a year out…fuck, not even Kane does that.

          • 2883

I don’t think when we acquired him from Florida, he was seen to have that potential anymore, could be wrong but I never saw him as that, I saw him as a 20/20 guy with the potential to be a lockdown 3rd liner. That said, that’s what I’m hoping for Danault.

          • StealingHappyHour

He was acquired and sold to ‘Hawks fans as a center with a high ceiling who struggled because he played for a bad team.

          • BanjoLegs

If he was paid less, Fro would be a sufficient 3rd/4th line player in most people’s eyes. In my opinion. #sorianoeffect

          • StealingHappyHour

He became a black hole on the right wing. He mply wasn’t able to step into Versteeg’s or Havlat’s shoes. Bolland has struggled because of it, in my opinion.
It’s not even the money with Fro….it’s the complete absense of any offense whatsoever. He’s a certified Bowman mistake (the new contract, not the original trade) and hopefully somebody mercifully takes him off our hands.

          • 2883

Or he’s able to rebound… He’s 24 not 40, he can still learn a few new tricks

          • StealingHappyHour

I think Bickell and Fro are what they are….

          • 2883

Bicks and Fro weren’t the primary issues with the Hawks last year… that 3rd line wasn’t really even the primary issue. Special Teams, and inconsistent goaltending ranked well above any issues with the 3rd line. Crawford was mediocre all year not just for the 2 weeks in the playoffs.

          • StealingHappyHour

I don’t recall saying that Bickell and Fro were the issues. I’m simply saying expecting anything more out of either player is folly and that you overrate Frolik. Also, you say the 3rd line isn’t an issue – I don’t see how this relates to Frolik as he is on the 4th line once Shaw took his place.

Back to the orignial point, Danault projects to me much better than Fro. Dream big – it’s your right as an American….or something.

      • StealingHappyHour

I’m pretty sure he gets ripped because he sucks for the most part. Great effort no doubt, but when Andrew Shaw takes your job, you suck.

    • putmeinthemadhouse

fro was a first round draft pick, danault has been billed as a defensive center that will probably anchor a 3rd line on an NHL team. I don’t see many similarities.

      • 2883

Danault was also a 1st round draft pick. And Danault’s got plenty of speed and offensive finesse…

      • StealingHappyHour

Almost none. Danult, as I understand, has the potential to be Bolland with a little offense as well.
The comparison doesn’t really work off paper.

  • 2883

Even without the lockout, Rockford is going to be a fun place to be this winter with Clendening, Morin and Olsen being there. There’s a nice chunk of prospects playing in Rockford this year.

    • Jrs23

No should be a fun year to watch them. Tickets to the home games agains the wolves will be cheap. Heading to the opening night on 10/13

  • K J

I lol’d at the Jokerit joke.

    • Joe Banks

      But surely, you jester…

      • hair helmet

        So it’s spelled Kshirley?

        • Accipiter

          FTFY – Kjirley

  • Lobster

I believe NHL teams had to provide a shortlist of players they wanted to be able to bring to training camp from the CHL whenever the NHL season begins. I am not sure of the restrictions or anything, but I am sure danault and mcneil both made that list.

  • Lobster

Saad must be a bit on the old side for his draft year to be eligible for the AHL. Figured he had to go back to the ohl.

    • putmeinthemadhouse

hell be 20 in late october.

  • TheFullAmonte

I will say this. The lockout has me a lot more excited to watch the Ice Hogs when they come to Peoria.

    • kev623

Sweet, let me know where you’re sitting (if you’re going October 19th and I don’t have to travel for work) and maybe we can meet up. Also anyone planning on going to one of the games in Rosemont the weekend before?

  • Hi, I’m Bob LeDonne

    UPBOATS ERYWHERE

    • hair helmet

E’rebody in da club gettin’ upboa!

  • hair helmet

“OMG! The season starts next week. While the offense looks (promising/confusing), the defense still looks (strong/beleaguered). Of course PP looks stupid bad and my god the goaltending…what did we do to deserve this?”

Just in case there is an alternate reality in which labor negotiations are conducted via common sense.

    • Chesterfield King (Chelsdag)

Also, before anyone else gets mad, you heard it here first.

      “Shutout.”

      • ahnfire

        nooooooooooooo we’re doomed forever now!

        • Chesterfield King (Chelsdag)

I guess we can throw out even watching the games once the season starts, now that I’ve fucked everything up.

          • ahnfire

            Everyone, it’s Chelsdag’s fault.
