Hawks Acquire Peter Regin And Pierre-Marc Bouchard: First Reactions

Well, I was off the grid until my brother called, and once again Stan Bowman has made a bargain bin, could be more effective than we think or could be nothing move to bolster his team. It’s funny, when I hear trade with the Islanders I immediately think it’s Frans Nielsen because the Hawks have been rumored to have gone after him multiple times. But he’s pretty entrenched on the Island now, so I guess that won’t ever happen. What they did get was Peter Regin and Pierre-Marc Bouchard for a 4th round pick. The Islanders are picking up half the tab money-wise as well, which leads me to believe that Stan Bowman puts GMs under some kind of hypnosis when it comes time to talk about money.

Bouchard has already been assigned to Rockford, along with Brandon Pirri (who can probably watch his Hawks career fading into the distance at this point). We mentioned Bouchard earlier in the year when he was on waivers. He’s had his concussion problems and isn’t exactly a heavy. But he’s been a possession-driver on the Isles this year when he was there and not Bridgeport. Before his injury problems this is a guy who has had four 45+ point seasons, and the one with 38 in just 59 games. They’re a couple years in the rearview obviously, but he’s still just 29 and there might be some gas left in the tank. Though I’m curious if he ever gets out of Rockford, really.

Regin is the more interesting pick up. He’s an actual center, but a bottom six one. He’s been playing something of a checking role for the Isles, though he’s helpless at the dot. Wonder if we don’t see him centering Smith and Bollig/Bouchard with Smith taking the draws, and slotting Kruger either to the 2nd or 3rd line. Regin is also a bigger body at 6-2, and size in the middle is not something the Hawks have a lot of. And some of that size (Handzus) can’t move. Regin can certainly do that.

Both of these guys have been getting drilled in PDO because the Isles’ goaltending has been utter horse manure. So some of their numbers are a little skewed I guess. Neither is signed beyond this year so this is something of a flier. Doesn’t really cost you anything to give them a look and if they don’t work you’re back to the team you had anyway.

We’ll be back with more later.

Ok because Discus is vomiting on itself, CR here to say I really think StanBo is a dark wizard that uses dark magic to mind control other GM’s. Second time he got someone to pay half the damn cap hit. Genius he is.

Wasn’t a Disqus issue. There was a massive DDOS attack last yesterday and last night. A couple other websites I visit daily went down.

Where are the ‘hawks on the pro contract limit?

Edit: Also, a Dane! If he gets called up, is Regin the first Dane ever to play in Chicago?

The man from France had a lot to do with that one!

  • 2883

I like the trade for the Hawks, get to see if Bouchard has anything left in the tank… Regin is a solid bottom 6 C… depth at C was a need, and Regin can help kill.

    • Z-man19

Can they bring PMB up without clearing space? If they do bring him up, he’d have to clear waivers to go back down wouldn’t he?

      • Korab22

Cap Geek shows Bouchard buried at 2 million. Assuming he really should be buried at 1 million, we should still have a million plus of cap space.

        • Z-man19

I don’t think either of those is accurate. His 2 mil is after the Isle eat half of his salary and the Hawks DO NOT have 1 mil in cap space. I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong on either

          • Korab22

The Islanders signed him for 2 mil. If they’re eating half, I assume he should be buried at 1 million on our books. Isn’t CapGeek putting $1,075,000 on to our Cap (2 mil less $925,000)? If I’m right, his cap hit would be $75,000.

          • Z-man19

missed the 2 mil contract. Capgeek has Regin’s contract at half, why don’t they list PMB’s at half?

Capgeek lists the current cap space at 212K, that’s AAV. I’m thinking they’d need to clear 1.8 mil to bring PMB up

          • Z-man19

            make that 800K not 1.8

          • Korab22

They have him at 1 million when you click on his name. Probably not a real big deal, because if this guy plays with the Hawks someone got hurt or traded. Let’s see what they put up tomorrow.

Edit – and one more thing, I’m sure the beats will get to the bottom of the cap situation tomorrow…ha!

          • Z-man19

You are correct on the injury or trade, Trade Kostka and Bollig

  • bizarrohairhelmet

The Pirri send-down might be because they want him to play during the break.

    • Z-man19

possibly, Mckenzie saying the Hawks have taken calls about him, for whatever that is worth

      • BestPredsForward

For his own sake, I would love to see him traded and finally get out of the labyrinth that is Q mustache.

        • laaarmer

I’m sure that it’s Pirri, not Q, that is causing his lack of NHL playing time.

You don’t think Q wants another young player that can help his team?

          • Black JEM

            Nope – see Bollig/Morin.

McKenzie’s one of the few people I trust with rumours. (For whatever that’s worth.)

  • Accipiter

I was hoping the Hawks acquired Andrew MacDonald when I read a trade between the Islanders and Hawks was reported.

    • M7

Yes. I’ve been on the Andrew MacDonald train for a while myself. I can’t recall the article to link to, but I read that MacDonald is looking for a contract in the 4-5 mildo range this summer. He’s been playing at league minimum for a few years.

He’s their best d-man though. I think the ship has sailed on being able to pry him away from the Isles. It was possible 2 years ago (maybe), but I think they know they’ve got a good one on their hands that really has flown under the radar.

    • M7

I was just reading some trade gossip on SportsNet and it mentioned that MacDonald turned down a 4 year $16 mil offer and that he could get traded to the highest bidder. Reports say that he would prefer to stay on the island though.

Money quote: “To recap: For $1.375MM cap and a 4th, the Hawks got two guys who managed positive possession in 3rd line minutes on a (crap) team.”

      Some Stan love here too:

“Best-case scenario, they contribute something. Worst case, they cost
nothing and come off the books completely in the summer. Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman is good at his job.”

OK, I’m an imbecile, but this also looks to me like another example of a coach and GM in synch.

      • Z-man19

VerSteeg would like a word with you

        • cliffkoroll

    • Lobster

Crazy. I had no clue how serious that issue was.

    • CozBullsFan

Wow. He’s gotta have a major illness if they’re saying it’s not life threatening.

  • Lobster

I don’t think this is anything special from Stan to get the Isles to retain half of the salary. It’s smart salary cap circumvention, so to speak, but the Isles aren’t getting screwed. Basically had to get Regin at half price to make it work with the cap and taking half of Bouchards buried cap hit was a way to alleviate the financial stress on the Isles, while still allowing them to retain half of Regin’s salary, without it counting against the cap for the Hawks (except for 75k).

    • Lobster

The Blackhawks don’t take either player without the salary retention. Snow kind of had to do it, though maybe he would have been better off finding another suitor.

  • BestPredsForward

I’m so excited for this Pirri trade. Stan has so many idiot GMs to swindle. Something like, Pirri, the ever-improving Bollig, and a high pick for Kadri isn’t impossible, right? Or does Brian Burke have another Sleepy Skater he isn’t too keen on?

    • putmeinthemadhouse

      Burke doesnt like baervstchi

      • BestPredsForward

Oh my God, he’s Swiss! According to the Cherry Laws of Hockey all Swiss players, like other European players, have Holes in their games. Just like their stupid, wimpy cheese!

    • lizmcneill

Cap space though. It’ll be pick/younger prospect who doesn’t have to clear waivers, or someone else has to go with him.

  • 1benmenno

I love Peter Riegert. He was great in Local Hero.

  • chidiver

And if any of you were wondering. From the Letang article linked below…..

“Players exempt from waivers cannot be assigned to the AHL if they have
appeared in 16 of the last 20 games prior to the Olympic break. Also, a
players on an NHL roster for 75 percent of the season from Oct. 1-Jan.
24 cannot be assigned to the AHL.”
