Hawks Acquire Karlsson

No, not that Karlsson, silly.

For a 7th round pick, the Hawks have picked up former Flames backup Henrik Karlsson. What it means, I can’t tell you. But I don’t think it’s simply because of Carter Hutton’s upcoming suspension in the AHL, as the Hogs had already called up Kent Simpson to back up Alec Richards for that. At least I think. It could be that Stan saw what we all saw last night from Emery, and thinks it’s something more than just rustiness and lack of games in the past eight months.

What Karlsson brings is a big frame, which the Hawks seem to like as it probably means he’s in his crease and his defenders know where he’ll be. That doesn’t mean he’s going to stop the puck while everyone knows where he is, however. Karlsson has only had 26 appearances the past two seasons in the Flames continuing attempts to turn Mikka Kiprusoff into flubber. In that limited sample he’s got a .905 SV% and a 2.79 GAA. His performance two years ago in 17 appearances of .908 and 2.58 would probably just clear the acceptable hurdle considering what kind of dog-breath he was playing behind in Calgary.

But it doesn’t look like Karlsson has played anywhere this season, and would face the same sharpness issues as Emery. Guess someone is going to have to explain this one to us.

Update: Karlsson has been assigned to The Rock, but not clear if he’s there to get in shape to replace Emery or to just fill in for Hutton while he’s on “leave.”

  • Accipiter

Stan could have claimed him off waivers a few days ago.

    • M7

My thought exactly. Sure it’s only a 7th round pick but… Any chance the Flames kept some of Karlssons salary on their books too?

      • Accipiter

It wasn’t mentioned, but I doubt it. I think he makes just over $800,000.00

        • 10thMountainFire

Wait. We don’t have the rights to Rob Klinkhammer anymore? Well fuck… there goes my birthday plans.

          • Accipiter

Phoenix has them now. I don’t know if that changes anything with respect to your plans.

          • 10thMountainFire

Yes. It means that on my birthday, I repeatedly stab his voodoo doll wearing a Phoenix sweater.

          • Accipiter

Wait what ? How did you get one of his voodoo dolls ? and why are you wearing a Phoenix sweater ?

          • 10thMountainFire

            Shhhhh.

    • Joe Banks

Would that have been before the Hutton fight and before Emery treated the puck like a live grenade?

    • putmeinthemadhouse

Waiver rules are a bit different, might be why he didn’t do it. Thats my guess, I don’t know the details.

  • Joe Banks

3-2 Nashville – St Louis pulled Halak?

  • 2883

We could’ve had him for free a week ago… but couldn’t have sent him down to the Rock (he would’ve had to take a roster spot)…

    • Accipiter

I thought there may have been a snag … thanks for clarifying.

    • Joe Banks

That makes sense. That StanBow is a genius.

    • ahnfire

really? I missed this. was he on waivers last week or something?

  • Waylon

Worth a shot – I don’t care about the contrary arguments regarding rustiness being the cause of Emery’s problems in net. He looked exactly like he did last year; positively slug – like movement going from post to post, a severe case of the dropsies in handling the puck like it had MRSA, and so on. No, that wasn’t just another instance of a netminder rounding back into form, that was a person who’s hip is completely shot, and the opposing players know it.

  • 2883

Let’s be honest about this, Emery didn’t look good, there were not any in house options at goalie in a year where there are a ton of back to backs (12 for the Hawks) the backup is going to get plenty of PT. If Emery can’t play better, this minor move might appear bigger at the end.

    • Z-man19

      It’s 11 back to backs, 10 more

  • putmeinthemadhouse

CBJ game sounds like a sellout…whats with that?

    • Z-man19

Sounds like a Detroit home game

      • putmeinthemadhouse

Thought so to, but it doesn’t look like it. Mega cheering during the jackets early pk and bobs heroics.

    • Accipiter

      The fans didn’t like watching a wiener-tucker.

      Big C brought his “posse”

Buy-one-get-one-free tickets. Is it really a sell-out if you don’t sell half the tickets? Maybe it’s a “giveout”.

  • Accipiter

The Leafs don’t seem to be scared of Fluffy.

    • Z-man19

I’d rather watch that game than listen to Mr Penis slobber all over the Wings/BJS game

      • Accipiter

I’m flipping between both games. Colton Orr technically won the fight vs. Fluffy.

        • Z-man19

What? Fluffy got beat, even technically?

          • Accipiter

It wasn’t a beating, but a good job by Orr to get him to one knee and keep him there. I think Fluffy was just having a bit of fun.

          • Z-man19

Will he get more than 5 min TOI?

          • Accipiter

He’s at 1:58 with half a game left, doesn’t look promising.

          • Z-man19

            CBJ looks awful

          • Accipiter

            They are winning now.

          • Z-man19

            No more,

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Why would they be, he had 1:58 of Ice time for the game. That was a shift for Phil Esposito.

      • Accipiter

Ovi had 2 min shifts too. I meant scared of fighting him, he had more than one offer to fight. Why anyone would willingly want to fight Scoot is beyond me.

  • chidiver

After watching a bunch of games the last few days I’m coming to an interesting conclusion…there will be no such thing as an “elite” goaltender for the first 10-15 games of the season. All have looked horrific so far. Therefore, defensive quality and depth (plus the offense’s ability to put a bunch of points on the board) will be a much more important factor for results in the first quarter of this season.

    • 10thMountainFire

After a bit more reflection on the weight of taking two games, back-to-back, against the two best teams in the conference at the end of last year, with two fine goaltenders… I’m very happy with how the Hawks have looked. Of course, the net is the big fucking question mark but even if we get just slightly above-average play from Crow, I think our blue line appears improved enough to take a bit of the responsibility off of him- especially if we continue to put up long ice time in the opponent’s end. The last two days have all practically been at the other end of the ice. This can’t help but improve Crow’s chances at looking better.

      • Joe Banks

So after only one game, Crow can only win “despite” himself?

        • 10thMountainFire

No. We’ll have a good understanding of what he’ll be like after another 10-15 games.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mario.digiulio.3 Mario Di Giulio

To be fair, Niemi didn’t look bad at all on Sunday. I had a brief sad over that.

  • 334Rules

    Good insurance either way.

  • 10thMountainFire

That first sentence could have read, ‘No, not that Henrik, silly.’

  • mightymikeD

OT, but has anyone figured out how to post photos in the Forum? I get a fatal error every time I try to use the img tag

  • girlphoenix

Hogs have four goalies on their roster right now. I guess it’s a good thing I can’t find anything about roster limits in the AHL rulebook.
