Friday Notes And Bobs And Such

Just a couple quick notes before we all jettison for the weekend, or at least until tomorrow.

-If you believe that the practice lines is how it will shake out in Game 2, and even if it starts this way the blender is going to get hit pretty quickly just as in Game 1, then Q is starting with what he ended with on Wednesday. That’s:

Saad-Toews-Hossa

Sharp-Handzus-Kane

Bickell-Bolland-Shaw

Bollig-Kruger-Frolik

But look for what happened in Game 1. Bickell will get shifts with Toews and Hanzus. Sharp will skate with Bolland at points, and take some of his draws as well. Kane will get some looks with Toews. It’s going to be all over once Bollig gets stapled to the bench.

-Speaking of which, I thought Bollig was quite all right in Game 1. Part of that was because Frolik and Kruger were so active he had only about 10 square feet to cover. But he was in o the forecheck but didn’t get out of line to chase hits, and didn’t commit any dumb penalties. That’s about all I’m asking. Though if Horton is out, the B’s 4th line really shouldn’t be that much to overcome.

-Keith played 48 minutes on Wednesday. Though he’s a physical freak as we all know, let’s keep an eye on how he comes back. Similarly, Chara had 45 minutes and though he’s in just about the same shape as Keith, he is 33 and that’s a lot more to drag around. Though Chara doesn’t have to bail out Seabrook’s dead ass all the time.

-Horton remains day-to-day, but I’m going to be surprised if he makes it to the post for Game 2. If it was bad enough to miss overtime(s) and Julien admits that he couldn’t have played yesterday or today, it’s not the kind of thing that’s just going to get better. As you may have seen, his shoulder has been popping in and out since an April fight with Iginla, and it has to be agony. Maybe he can get shot up to give it a go, but how many hits can he take?

If Horton doesn’t go, Seguin moves to the top line where he looked pretty damn swift in Game 1. He’s a different type of threat, and it’s one that Keith is more equipped to handle, but it won’t make that line suddenly toothless. However, it’ll erode whatever flair they had on their bottom six unless Paille or Peverley or Kelly can emerge from The Phantom Tollbooth, which they haven’t all spring. It’s a definite advantage for the Hawks for sure.

-As for the whole Cubby Tees thing, I think the whole thing is silly and stupid. The adoption of “Boston Strong” is a farce in itself as I wrote about in The Indian’s editorial for Game 1. Anything that references Lance Armstrong needs to be done away with. The bullying of the Chicago Stronger t-shirt was silly too. The fact that we’re back to making fun of each other probably means we’ve moved on and are pretty much healed from the Marathon mayhem. Whatever. It’s not a big deal, but as someone who constantly is toeing the line of decent and insulting, I’m always miffed when someone gets reamed for being edgy.

Ok you have done it twice now. While Chara’s number is 33 his age is 36. At least according to espn dot com. Sorry, I saw you say it in the first preview and couldnt stop myself from correcting. I’m a true internet tough guy.

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Yahoo Sports lists his Bday as Mar 18, ’77, so yeah, 36.

      • Z-man19

This sucks so bad when discussing how an athlete is getting older and you see his birth date and you discover he’s much younger than you are.

        • DesertHawk

I’m still on the positive side of that equation, mostly, but not by much.

          • Z-man19

            Enjoy it while it lasts

  • Accipiter

Horton has been getting ‘shots’ to deal with shoulder pain (dislocations) all playoffs. That last one must have been too much for him to overcome. More a question of how much longer before the ‘shots’ are ineffective forcing him to the sidelines.

    • Shooter

I can’t imagine this is healthy. I’m no medical doctor, but from what I’ve seen regarding shoulder injuries/dislocations, the more you pop it back out, the weaker the tendons/muscle holding it in place become. This can’t be good for his long term career if he’s really that hurt that a simple push sent him to the sidelines….he may want to rethink this plan.

On that same train of thought, how much can you protect yourself when your shoulder is usually the primary point of contact when taking/giving a hit? You become a liability if you can’t get engaged in play for fear of re-injuring yourself.

      • Jeff Lebowski

I tore my labrum and didn’t get surgery for 8 years. It hurt like hell when it dislocated, but generally I could avoid that if I avoided the “danger areas” in my range of motion. The immediate pain of a dislocation was usually gone after a day, but it would be more likely to pop out again the sooner I tried getting back to physical activity.

Even after waiting for surgery that long, it’s 100% now. Waiting just caused more trauma and tears and made the shoulder less and less stable.

I’d be surprised if he doesn’t play.

      • Accipiter

Bruins want to get the most of him, he’s a UFA, he will play.

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Bollig: I have no real problem with him other than the occasional silly trip to the sin bin. My major problem is with Q, and stop me if you’ve herd this before: Why dress a guy you will only play for 7 minutes / 3 periods?

    • allhawks

This, a 1000 times. Why play a guy in a championship game that may go over 100 mins and only play him 14 mins? Esp when there’s another dude on the bench better than him, faster than him and you can trust for double those mins?

      • Preacher

I can see the complaints about Stals not being all that great defensively so sit him. But I don’t see Bollig being much/any better. And if they’re equal there, I’d take Stals incredible speed over Bollig’s occasional “grit” any day. Especially when I think the Bruins will really try to jam it up in game 2 (It’s a trap!). Speed to the outside will be at a premium.

    • DaveM36

Not presenting this as a defense of skating Bollig, but did you guys notice that Thornton skated a whopping 9:55 in the last game?

  • putmeinthemadhouse

B’s are practicing soderberg on the third line with horton/sequin switching off on the top one. Soderberg is an interesting wrench thrown into your equation here.

  • steeg of their own

This may be sad (not Saad, he’s awesome), but it bears saying. Thank you CI for making an effort to be friendly to female fans and not say sexist things while still being funny. Between what the NFL has done recently (see also: female fans don’t need purses, I’m sure they’ll be fine with ziploc bags to show their tampons to security!) and some of the comments I’ve read on other sites in checking out the finals, it’s really REALLY nice to know that I can be a Blackhawks fan here and not worry about hearing amazement that I’m a sports fan and a girl. It shouldn’t be rare, but it is. So thanks to the ToS and to Ahn especially for making this a really good place to talk hockey.

    • AMR

I swear to God I did not know that you were female and even if I had it wouldn’t have mattered. tThe only thing in my mind that matters is if you are a knowledgeable fan and if not have the humility to ask questions

    • CozBullsFan

Upboated. There are a lot of female fans here and it’s a big part of what makes TCI so great. The only thing that matters is that you are a fan of the Hawks. Doesn’t matter how much you know about the sport. You’ll learn everything you need to know in time. TCI is the most friendly and welcoming community of sports fans I’ve ever encountered online.

  • 2883

The Boston Strong thing, I get why people in Boston would be miffed… I don’t really understand the links to 9/11. Comparing what happened in Boston to 9/11 is like comparing a light drizzle to a hurricane. Yes its’ sad, yes there was devastation but nowhere near the toll 9/11 had. If the Boston Strong phrase is a rallying cry for a city that underwent a horrific tragedy fine, it shouldn’t be messed with. If it’s a rallying cry for a hockey team that’s trying to give the people of Boston, a recreational activity to take their minds off of the tragedy, well then it gets a little more grey. At what point is it going to be OK to use their slogan in jest? 2 years? 3 years?

  • ahnfire

    Tazer wins the Selke!

    • roadhog
      • ahnfire

        Yes, I know. I’m already watching. :D

        • roadhog

          Sorry, that was for others.

    • Oregon_hawk

      WORD. fuck and yes.

      don’t touch it yet.

    • Crash

      I like this news.

    • chichicagochi

2 Hawks in top 10 for Selke voting, 3 in top 25.

  • ahnfire

    MacLean wins the Jack Adams

    • DesertHawk

Boooo… I don’t even know which team he coaches.

      • Accipiter

        Sens.

      • ahnfire

        he’s the Walrus!

        • Daze55

He is the walrus coo coo ca choo

        • bizarrohairhelmet

          The walrus was paul

      • QCBlackhawk

The Quad City Mallards back when.

Even though I would have rather had Q win it, I am cool with Walrus rolling it :D

  • ahnfire

Shero wins GM of the Year. (lolllllll awkward)

    • roadhog

      Very awkward.

  • ahnfire

awww boo Kaner did not win the Lady Byng :(

Martin St Louis got it again.

    • roadhog

I like St Louis, but BOOOOO!!!!!!

      • Accipiter

        Meh.

  • Waylon

I think Keith will be fine, especially after the extra day – watching the replay last night, he was still flying around the ice at the end, while everyone else looked stuck in quicksand. Couple with the fact that he didn’t even play much the prior week (given the suspension), no problemo.

    • ahnfire

That was one game and Keith still ended up playing 2OT against the Kings, so I don’t think that the effect of that one game off is going to make too much of a difference.

    • roadhog

I watched the replay too, and Keith wasn’t the only Hawk to appear to have some jump left in the OTs. It will be interesting to see when and with whom fatigue sets in tomorrow.

      • Accipiter

        Bollig will be ready.

        • roadhog

Yep, he’s got a great spot all picked out.

          • ahnfire

he has his favorite spot on the bench all set for when it gets late in the game. ;)

  • CozBullsFan

I figured Alfredsson would win it. The elder statesman usually does.

    • roadhog

Toews will get one eventually. Not sure Brown will be nominated again.

      • CozBullsFan

Donating $50 for each hit is considered being a good representative for his team to the community? That’s a joke.

        • roadhog

          Right, I thought the same.

  • Accipiter

When Crosby lost his mind in G1 of the ECF, it was because Chara punched him square in the lower jaw. There is video of it and Chara says it wasn’t him.

    • DesertHawk

Welp… I guess that’s one way to completely neutralize someone for a series.

    • CozBullsFan

Indeed he did. You can see him punch Crosby right in the face behind the net.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=V2R-UmvCqOo#t=25s

      • DesertHawk

It looks to me like Crosby swings with his left first. I said at the time I was surprised no one popped him.

        • Accipiter

That isn’t the video I saw. Go here: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/

It is near the end of the video (3:30 mark) titled ‘Insider Trading: June 14′ on the middle right of the screen.

          • DesertHawk

Yeah that’s pretty spot on there. Still, no reason to melt down for a whole series… and just affirms my belief that the Bruins are douches.

          • QCBlackhawk

Yeah, that’s some pretty grade-A assbag shit though, to target somebody’s recently busted jaw.

          • ahnfire

at the same time, as Mooney pointed out on twitter, “if your jaw is so fragile that it can’t get punched in scrums, maybe you shouldn’t be playing.”

and maybe you shouldn’t be taking off the face/jaw guard then.

          • Accipiter

You shouldn’t be getting punched like that unless you drop the gloves and are in a fight. To me that is cowardly, and does not fall into the ‘do whatever it takes to win’ category.

          • ahnfire

I won’t even argue that – I completely agree with you.

          • QCBlackhawk

Especially for a fucking behemoth like that. Like he’d be scared of a straight up fight.

          • Preacher

They went after Toews’s head after he came back from the concussion. (I believe it’s what eventually led to him going after Thornton.)

          • CozBullsFan

This is why teams are so guarded in what injuries their players have and for good reason. Hockey is a physical sport and players play hurt or come back early all the time. The opposing team will do anything to win and targeting a player’s injured part of their body is fair game.

          • Waylon

and Bolland was targeted by noted dickface Hamhuis the first game back after his lengthy absence from a concussion. This, after Hamhuis had just come back from his own concussion, and had gone around Canada as a sort of PSA during his absence warning about their dangers.

          • QCBlackhawk

While I agree that the guard should have stayed on, I also don’t think it’s a cool move, we are still mighty finnicky about Hossa’s dome and were for Sharpie’s shoulder, as well as what Preacher is talking about. While I realize concussions are on a whole other level, it’s at least related.

          • ahnfire

it is – I suppose I should be clearer and say I’m ok with Crosby getting pissed off about it and it does reveal a lot about why he lost his shit.

but at the same time, he’s a hockey player and he should have expected it. I’m just a fan and I’m not surprised because really, who doesn’t expect that? does anyone here realistically expect that the Hawks won’t be targeting Horton’s shoulder if he plays game 2?

          • Accipiter

Horton’s shoulder is fair game if you hit him during the play, no problem there.

          • Waylon

Sure, if he goes into the crease then he’s going to get slammed, no question.

          • QCBlackhawk

Well, I think there’s a difference in trying to be physical to punish an injury through checks and hittin people into boards and shit and then jacking someone in the mouth with your glove on.

I agree that it should not have thrown him off his whole series though, kinda shows what he’s made of upstairs.

          • Preacher

“kinda shows what he’s made of upstairs”
Once Crosby came into the league and whined about not getting calls, his fate was sealed. EVERYONE was targeting him after that. Not much has changed. For them or him.

          • Waylon

People forget that it was Malkin who pretty much saved Crosby’s bacon during the SCF against DET. Crosby almost disappeared in that series, if memory serves. That being said, I do agree with Cherry that the league has to do something about all of the cheap – shotting of the stars in the league, the instigator rule has made it too easy for teams to get away with that shit.

          • QCBlackhawk

So uh, not sure if this is actually reality, but someone on reddit said “I said the same but if doctors say you do t need it you cant wear it kind of a stupid rule but it is rule”

          • QCBlackhawk

Although to be fair that wouldn’t stop him from wearing a full cage.

          • CozBullsFan

Your link takes me to the NHL page of TSN. Did you mean to link something else?

          • Accipiter

After you get there, go to ‘Insider Trading: June 14′ on the middle right of the screen. Click on it and at the 3:30 mark they show it.

          • CozBullsFan

LOL @ Chara saying “prove to me that it is my glove” after he watched the video.

          • QCBlackhawk

On par with the Ference “glove malfunction” comment. Fuckin boners.

          • CozBullsFan

I can understand why they say the Bruins are a dirty team. They really go out of their way to do shit that should be penalized but, they somehow always get away with it.

          • girlphoenix

Ference’s “glove malfunction” is funny though

  • QCBlackhawk

Both our goalies win the Jennings. Lol

    • DesertHawk

      That’s how it works… /confused

      • QCBlackhawk

Oh shit, I thought the fewest goals trophy went to the team and not the goalies. Whoops. Failbarge.

  • BigCSouthside

Sam, when has anyone ever accused you of being on the right side of the line between decent and insulting?

  • bizarrohairhelmet

Something tells me we are going to see a tidal wave of Bruin doucheitude tomorrow.

    • CozBullsFan

Wouldn’t surprise me. I’m sure Q has said something about it. The Hawks know it’s coming at some point. They just need to stick to their game and let the Bruins fail at trying to get them off of it.

    • Z-man19

      You and Ingmar chatting again?

      • QCBlackhawk

Can’t be, this feeling seems to be somewhat rooted in reality.

        • Z-man19

Good point, not dumb anymore I’d say

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Remember how the Bruin win in ’11 was only stomach-able because it was against the ‘Nucks? Anybody think we’ve seen those Bruins? Watch the video of Bruins/Pens down below. Our Game 1 was an outlier on the Bruins Douchlichheit scale.

          • Z-man19

I’m just shocked we saw so little of it in game 1, maybe they dot think they’ll get away with it on the road, start the bullshit at home

      • bizarrohairhelmet
        • Z-man19

I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop

          • DesertHawk

Is that a real shirt? Who would wear that?

          • Z-man19

            Kane

          • DesertHawk

I don’t think even he has that little taste.

          • QCBlackhawk

It’s a joke shirt based off of Kane’s own hairstyle joke. That’s some next-level hipster shit, right there.

          • DesertHawk

I get that it’s a joke :P I just can’t imagine anyone actually wearing it.

          • QCBlackhawk

That’s what I mean. Hipsters might be all over that shit for the irony factor.

          • DesertHawk

            Hnghghgh. :Shudders:

          • QCBlackhawk

            This is the correct response.

          • DesertHawk

They also make me sad, cause they wear shirts for things I like to be ironically cool… It’s like, you’re not wearing that Wookiee shirt, because you love Wookiees, you’re wearing it to make fun of it and be cool by proxy, douche… /hangups

  • Z-man19

So AV possibly to NY, Malkin signs extension with Pitt for 9.5 mildo, Pitt has SIX guys under contract for 2014, they have 30 mil left to complete their roster

    • QCBlackhawk

      Best GM ever.

      • Z-man19

        Shero?

        • QCBlackhawk

          Yeah, not serious.

          • Z-man19

Didn’t know who you were poking fun at, Shero or Sather

          • QCBlackhawk

            Yes.

          • Accipiter

AV might do well in NY. Why are they even contemplating Messier as a head coach ?

          • Z-man19

Solid question, high potential for that to fail miserably

    • CozBullsFan

That’s 30 million with no change to the salary cap. It’s not a guarantee, but the cap will most likely go up for 2014-2015. It may not turn out as bad as we think it will. Malkin’s contract has set the tone for all contracts under the new CBA. It will work in everyone’s favor for what he received. 30+ million is not impossible but they most definitely won’t be able to field a team like they have now.

      • Accipiter

Hopefully the tone isn’t set by the Getzlaf/Perry contracts.

        • CozBullsFan

It won’t be. Malkin is better than either of them. They were over payed.

          • Accipiter

I realize that, but those two got a tonne of cash for what most likely was an unsustainable shooting%, which will affect what others could ask for.

          • Preacher

I’m a bit surprised at the contracts that have been signed recently. Given the drop in the Cap, I thought the numbers would be lower overall.

          • Z-man19

Guys like Bicks are the ones I’m curious about, the big guns will still get theirs, what happens to the mid-level guys? Will teams have room for 3-4 mil salaries?

          • Preacher

And (not that I want to start this discussion now) but if we lose guys like Bicks and Stals in our “mini-purge” do we have guys in the pipeline who can come up and fill those specific roles? Or, will we have to wait another year or two for them to “mature” the way Bicks has as a player?
(My gosh, off days are boring. When does the puck drop?)

          • Accipiter

I don’t think we have another Bickell in the pipeline or close to being ready.

          • Preacher

Which is my big concern. I have to believe Stan will do anything he can to sign Bicks, without mortgaging the future, that is. He’s got Toews and Kane to re-up as well.

          • Z-man19

That video you linked to about Crosby/Chara, they said Stan’s #1 priority was signing Bicks after the SCF, I wonder how true that is

          • Accipiter

It might be high on SB’s list, but as Preacher said in his reply 19 and 88 are obviously more important.

          • Preacher

But then again, Tazer can’t score and Kane is lazy so…Bicks is probably more important now.

          • Z-man19

The Hawks may not have Bicks replacement but they sure don’t have a replacement for Leddy/Rosz either. Still think Leddy is priority 1, unless Bicks will sign for Stan’s magic number

          • Accipiter

I was about to say that 8 was the biggest priority IMHO.
If 29 will sign for 3mil or thereabouts Stan prolly does it, if its too far north of 3mil, 29 walks.

          • lizmcneill

Stan is a canny body, I think his exact quote as “a priority”. If all the excitement over Bicks means less attention/offer sheets to Leddy he’ll probably take it.

          • Z-man19

One thing that will help the teams is the increased length of time before a player can be UFA, might help the hawks keep Pirri, Morin etc for a while longer

          • lizmcneill

What is it now? Old CBA was 7 seasons or age 27, right?

          • Why

Not sure about the old CBA off the top of my head, but the new rules are in article 10 the new CBA. I’ll try and simplify it down but you’ve got basically got it right. You can go unrestricted if you meet any of the following criteria:

            a) 7 seasons or age 27 at June 30 (like you said);

            b) 10 seasons (minors and pros combined) and making less than the average league salary;

            c) 25 years or older, 3 seasons (minors, pros and overseas while under contract) and played less than 80 NHL games total (28 games of at least 30 minutes for goaltenders).

I can’t think of a situation where a player would qualify for b) and not a) above. It seems to me that if you can’t get drafted until you’re at least 17, I don’t know how you can play 10 professional seasons and not be 27. With that said, it’s in the CBA.

          • lizmcneill

depends if they count foreign leagues, some of them allow them to go pro at 16.

          • Why

They count foreign leagues but the player has to have an NHL contract for the season to count. I don’t think a player can sign a contract until after they’re drafted.

          • CozBullsFan

Indeed they did. The market is usually set by the contract of the best player available. Teams will point to Malkin when signing players. What Getzlaf/Perry got won’t factor in as much because everyone know the Ducks overpaid.

          • Accipiter

I guess it’s up to the GM to realize the value of the players that they are signing and make the according comparisons. I gotta believe that there are GM’s out there that think Getzlaf/Perry contracts were good signings though.

          • CozBullsFan

I’m not sure that I agree with you on the Getzlaf/Perry signings being good. Neither of them have provided consistent offense like Malkin. They got above market value because they are core players that the Ducks can’t afford to lose.

          • Accipiter

I never said I thought they were good. I meant that there most likely are GM’s out there that think their contract isn’t bad and may use it as a comparison. I think the contracts aren’t very good, but there are people out there who like Getlaf/Perry and think they are worth the money.

      • Z-man19

They need to sign 17 guys, even if the cap goes up 4 mil that’s still only a 2 mil average. That’s a lot of low salary players to fill spots

        • CozBullsFan

The average doesn’t matter if you can get value for your dollar like the Hawks do. i.e. Bickell

          • Z-man19

Bicks is a pretty extreme example for this year, plus you’re high dollar guys better make their money and not fall on their ass ie MAF. Can’t see him sticking around

          • Accipiter

Don’t know if Shero is being truthful, but he says he wants MAF to sign an extension.

          • Z-man19

Bet he’s not thinking 5 mil per

          • Preacher

MAF doesn’t have much negotiating power, does he? He DID win that shiny thing a few years ago, but his numbers since haven’t been great (have they? Too lazy to look it up). But what “proven” goalies are available?

          • Accipiter

Shero asked where else he was supposed to acquire a 40win/season goalie, he seemed quite high on MAF.

          • Z-man19

MAF isn’t UFA until after 2014

          • DesertHawk

MFA has been terrible for 4 years now. We were discussing this the other day on a different thread, I’m talking multiple .8somthing seasons.

          • CozBullsFan

Sherro is a good GM who made a bad decision on the MAF contract. If it wasn’t for that bad contract, the Pens would be just fine. Yeah, there is a chance he could be amnestied, but Sherro’s comments point to that not happening. Let’s say he did do it. It would make his job a whole lot easier. I agree that Bicks is an extreme example for getting value on a dollar. That said, I’m sure there are players that can be signed that might provide the same situation we have with Bicks. It’s really a wait and see situation. Who knows what will happen between now and then. If he fails, then we can all point and laugh.

          • DesertHawk

Can’t we just point and laugh now? I’d like a laugh and who knows when/if he’ll actually be laugh worthy.

          • lizmcneill

What’s their farm team like? That’s where you get value on the $ (Saad, Frogger, Leddy, Shaw all on EL contracts, how much would an equivalent 27-year-old UFA cost? Ewww.)

    • Z-man19

AV tells Dallas he’s no longer interested

      • Accipiter

Was it because of Debbie ?

        • Z-man19

Never saw it, I have no clue what you’re talking about

          • Accipiter

            Debbie does Dallas.

          • Z-man19

Yes, I know, messing with ya. Rumor has it Messier might assist AV in NY. Can’t see any issues arising out of that

          • Accipiter

Yeah, Messier doesn’t seem like a guy who needs to control everything….

        • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

No, team blamed their lack of success on not playing well rather than bias from the NHL.

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

      Sherro praying for record revenues….

      • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

… and for the league to institute the controversial “one defenseman per team” rule.

    • 2883

They still gotta re-sign Letang. Gonna be 7 guys and 22-25 mil

      • Accipiter

It was mentioned that if Letang wants Doughty type money they may be forced to trade him.

        • Preacher

Given that they loaded up on offensive talent this year and their defensive game is incredibly weak, losing a quality defenseman will really help them next season. NOT.

          • chichicagochi

            Letang’s not really a defenseman, he’s a fourth forward.

It’s easy to forget sometimes just how much Vancouver fans HATE Dave Bolland. Given he never did anything like Keith’s lobotomy to Donk, I never quite understood it.

They need to be a little careful though – Bolland is a better two-way player than Marchand, but Marchand has more offensive skill than Bolly and Shaw put together. . . .

      • Waylon

Oh, in case you’ve missed it, they despise Keith – hate the living hell out of him. They still think he put that hit on Sedin all by his lonesome, and in no way was it a retaliatory shot at all. Also, during the SCF when the Hawks were staying in VAN, an older woman who was using her walker saw Kane and another player on the street and gave them the finger. Kane just laughed.

        • MattC86

I am well aware of the hate for Keith. re: Bolland, I can understand the frustration with how he’s shut down the Sedins in the past, but I was saying I don’t know why he makes them break out in as many hives as Keith does.

    • chichicagochi

I think it’s remarkable how level headed that article is considering it was written by a Nucker

  • Stockroom Snail

Has anybody mentioned that KANER finished tied for 25th with Frolik (and
others) in the Selke voting? I’m mentioning it because sometimes I
mention things that don’t matter. Well, all the times I mention things,
    to be fair.

    • Why

      Good find.

Voting breakdown is here, if you trust Puck Daddy:

      http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/jonathan-toews-won-2013-selke-award-211740617.html

One person voted for Kane. They voted Kane 2nd. There is a person out there who watches hockey that apparently thinks Kane is a better defensive player than Hossa and/or Toews.

      • Accipiter

Someone (who has a vote) also believes Kadri is a top 2-way player.

        • Why

          4th best in the league.

I love looking at the insanity on the lower levels of the ballot. I didn’t see much of the Eastern Conference this year but I imagine a lot of fans that watch their teams are amazed at some of the guys that get votes.

  • Hi, I’m Bob LeDonne

    You rang?

  • Why

Not sure if this has been posted yet but NHL.com reports the Blackhawks were using the following PP units in practice:

That’s probably the reason for the switch-up at practice, in which Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane were split onto separate units. Toews worked with Andrew Shaw and Marian Hossa in one group, and Kane was put with Brandon Saad and Bolland on the other.

The point men also were different. Keith and Brent Seabrook worked the points for Toews’ line, and Nick Leddy and Patrick Sharp, who owns one of the best slap shots on the team, manned the points on the other unit.

  • Accipiter

    Horton is playing tonight.

    • DJ

Of course he is. But Boston will be holding their collective breath. One solid hit, one awkward fall, one unfortunate … whatever that was in Game 1, and he’s done for the night.

      • Why

Fuck. I thought being unable to go during double OT meant he’d be out today. If healthy, he’s tough to deal with.

      • Preacher

Considering his shoulder apparently popped out trying to push off from Hammer, if he lifts his stick to go for a high puck he could be done. I’m guessing they’ve got him pretty shot up in order to play. Taking a slapshot should be excruciating.

        • Accipiter

Horton shoots R, and it’s his left shoulder that is hindering him. Any movement where his left arm has to go into flexion ( flexion is lifting your arm up above your head, or in that direction ), like he did against Hammer, is more problematic than shooting for Horton IMHO. He most likely is wearing a shoulder brace that stops him from being able to lift his left arm too high, plus the injections he is getting.

  • justforkicks

guess its basically official – AV to the rangers. fml

    • bizarrohairhelmet

At least you still have the Blackhawks…

      • justforkicks

        of course

    • ahnfire

      /pat pat

    • Preacher

I guess he did put together a winning record, got to a Cup final and is a players’ coach (the opposite of Torts), but I still don’t see the appeal of having a guy whose team was known for diving and not being able to handle physical play–how he’ll fare better in the (supposedly) more physical Eastern Conference. And he’ll face the Bruins more, won’t he? Is this a good fit for the Rangers?

      • ahnfire

my friend told me he’s excited because he doesn’t believe that AV can mess up Lundqvist and he believes that AV is going to focus on the offense, which is something Torts didn’t do.

        • justforkicks

i think he absolutely can mess up lunqvist, i just hope he doesn’t. though can see the offensive piece.

          • ahnfire

I agreed re: offense, but I pointed out that Lu was a good goalie that AV mindfucked & screwed over. One gave me this “uh huh yea right” look while the other told me hopefully it’ll be different.

The difference between the two was that one admits that I probably know more about the WC than he does (the latter) while the other is like yeaa whatever (the former).

      • justforkicks

exactly. i’m keeping my fingers crossed, all i can do at this point
