NHL: Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks

Blackhawks 3, Kings 2

You watched the game. You saw what happened.  Let’s get to it.

–The theme of this win comes down to the Hawks fourth line so that seems as good of a place to start.

Marcus Kruger is continuing to impress.  Kruger has definitely added lower body strength this season.  While he was getting pushed off the puck in the corners and along the wall his first couple seasons, it’s just not happening as much this season.  And the result is added time for him to make his patented nifty passes to open linemates.

The only real complaint I have with him (and it’s not really a complaint more of an observation) is he wastes a lot of energy with needless stickhandling in open ice.  I’d like to see him just push the puck forward than waste the time and space given to him with stickhandling.  But again, it’s worked for him to be successful at this level so what do I really know.  It just seems more like nitpicking at this point.  Kruger is hands down, the most improved Hawk and getting better with every game.

Michael Frolik had another strong game skating on Kruger’s wing.  So long as Joel Quenneville continues to play Frolik for over ten minutes a game, the better off the Hawks will be.  Frolik helped set up the Hawks first goal with a confident play along the blue line, drawing a King defender with him only to leave a drop pass for Duncan Keith, who in turn, found a wide open Brent Seabrook.  Frolik had an opportunity to pot a couple of his own as well but was turned aside.  Even if he’s not scoring, he’s still helping to keep the puck out of the Hawks zone and into the opponents end.  Last I checked, that’s a good thing.

There’s very little to say about Brandon Bollig but I will say this…he has a sneaky hard shot.

–I saw on the Tweeters after game that Jonathan Toews said the team was inspired by Brent Seabrook’s unfortunate shot block.  Does it really take a teammate getting crushed in the nutsack by a Drew Doughty one-timer to find inspiration?  Is it not enough that you’re playing on national television in front of your home crowd?  I don’t know; maybe it’s just cliched athlete talk, but I have a tough time believing witnessing something like that makes you want to play harder.  If anything, I see that and I start to reconsider my career choice.

This kind of gets back to the Jonathan Toews fight against San Jose and I don’t really want to open up that can of worms (which probably isn’t even closed yet).  But if the players truly think watching stuff like that makes them better, then more power to them.  I’m just not sure I believe them.

–He didn’t get a point on the play but Patrick Kane’s stick lift on Drew Doughty was the difference in Patrick Sharp’s game-winning goal.  That puck never makes it to Sharp without Kane’s quick hands.  Even when he’s not getting on the scoresheet, he’s still making key contributions.

–Did my eyes deceive me or did I see Patrick Sharp taking an offensive zone draw in the third period? Don’t stop now boys.

–The two assists from Duncan Keith were solid reminders of how amazing he can be.  Two cross-ice passes right on the tape that led to (fairly) easy tap-in goals.  Maybe it’s Joel Quenneville’s extended leash (more on that below) that’s allowing Keith more time with the man-advantage or maybe it’s Keith finally realizing that his point shots into opposing shin guards is not a good thing but the Hawks power play is better off with this version of Keith on the point. I’m just not sure I’m throwing him into the Norris Trophy conversation like Pierre Macguire is.

–With the Hawks getting at least a point in all 15 games thus far, it’s kind of hard to see if Joel Quenneville has actually changed his habits from the last two seasons or if it’s all the wins masking it.  So far, it seems like Quenneville has exhibited way more patience by sticking with guys even if things aren’t going exactly as planned.  And guys are getting way more opportunities to prove whether they belong as opposed to a couple of shifts.

Again, it’s still very early and the Hawks haven’t really faced any kind of adversity but it’s this type of coaching that made Joel Quenneville so successful in his first couple seasons with the Hawks.  He knew where guys fit in and where they didn’t.  Instead of just moving things around like a mad scientist, he’d make calculated risks and more often than not, they’d pan out.  That seems to be what’s happening now but it’s probably best to check back after the Hawks have their first slide before declaring anything different.

  • 10thMountainFire

    Holy goal differential, Batman.

    +20?

    • BeverlyBrewmaster

Yeah, for some reason I feel like they keep winning close games, which makes me think that their point streak is just a hot mess of luck, and then I look at goal differential and realize they really are that good. (Well, not THAT good, since any kind of point streak like this requires its fair share of luck, but you know what I mean…)

      • mightymikeD

also being one of the stingiest teams in terms of goals against… I mean.. that’s not the ‘Hawks we know, right? Amazing

    • mightymikeD

      love it..

  • activestick

Yea Kane lifting Dick Dounuts stick to get Sharp going was awesome.
Also awesome is Q’s waving his dick around keeping the 4th line out against anyone regardless.

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

I think Toews was just doing the leadership thing and thanking Seabs for his pain.

  • mightymikeD

I love Kruger’s play this year but would make a case for Leddy as most improved.. or maybe “Matured” is the word I’m looking for..

    • 10thMountainFire

I could agree. Good thing we can have both of thems.

      • mightymikeD

and Hjammer (checks the closet for CNS armed with a sharpened spreadsheet)

        • 10thMountainFire

…and you can make a case for Oduya. Not necessarily ‘improved’ but definitely more consequential.

          • mightymikeD

            bees for everyone!

          • Z-man19

According to Liam McHugh the hawks are 24-2-7 in regular season games since acquiring Oduya. Can that be right?

          • 10thMountainFire

            Holy Swedish shitballs.

Edit: No. Fucking SERIOUSLY. If that’s accurate, holy fucking fuck.

          • Z-man19

I checked, the hawks have exactly 2 regulation losses since Oduya joined the team

          • DesertHawk

I’ve liked him since day 1… good to see I’m not just crazy.

          • 10thMountainFire

He’s like Chris Campoli but not like him at all.

  • Waylon

If memory serves, I don’t remember Q ever leaving the 4th line out there for very long against other team’s top lines (as in never), not even during the cup run three seasons ago. I also didn’t think he’d let Saad stay with the top line for very long – so that definitely confirms your point about his patience level this season. BTW, even though he didn’t face many shots, another strong outing from Razor.

    • mightymikeD

agreed on all points.. Razor choked up a few rebounds and was maybe off his angles a bit for the second goal.. but contributed some bloody fine saves and occupied his crease well under pressure. I’m interested (and slightly worried) about what happens when carbomb is healthy, though

      • 10thMountainFire

I continue to be dismayed to see Bollig dress in place of Mayers. But I am fighting Q logic here so fuck me. I quit.

        • Waylon

I actually wouldn’t mind if Carbomb replaced Bollig as resident agitator, but Q seems to have some kind of mad love for the guy.

          • 10thMountainFire

Yeah, I don’t get it. I saw Bollig look decent on one shift. After that, the entire section I was sitting in got to hear the Mayers-Bollig treatise I have honed to a fine point in loud fashion.

          • mightymikeD

is it “Bollig is a waste of tissue, Mayers is much better” with added swearing?

          • 10thMountainFire

Yes. Several ‘fucks’, one ‘fuckitude’, two ‘fuckery’s’, and a ‘goddamn it, seriously’.

  • Z-man19

Here’s hoping that Seabs had a couple bags of frozen peas waiting at home, keep that swelling down big man.

Lets not forget that was the defending Stanley Cup Champs. The end was more exciting than it needed to be but LA is still a good team.

    • mightymikeD

yeah.. they won’t be propping the Conference up for long (they also have games in hand on pretty much everyone) I expect to see them in the playoff mix again.

      • Z-man19

Quick hasn’t been 100% and they’ve played a ton of road games

        • mightymikeD

exactly. I still think that the Pacific PO contingent will be Kings and Sha-Arks.. (although the Ducks may prove me wrong on that)

          • Z-man19

The Duck are gonna have to be shot down to not make the PO’s this year

        • 10thMountainFire

I would not be surprised to see Quick have surgery sometime this season. That back injury he was suffering from during last year’s Cup run sounds fucking nasty.

          • Z-man19

He had it last August I believe

          • 10thMountainFire

Is he still having some issues with it or is he suffering from another injury?

          • Z-man19

I don’t think he was able to do much training prior to the start of the season so he’s way behind

          • 10thMountainFire

            That’s a shame… he’s a great talent.

  • Hi, I’m Bob LeDonne

    So, this is really fun.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

      Winning is fun :)

    • mightymikeD

I assume you’re talking about Endurance Knitting.. because yes, yes it is

      • birdhead

is that when you knit a whole sweater in 4ply because I’m doing that at the moment and it actually sucks and blows at the same time

        • 10thMountainFire

You should make our Committed Indian t-shirts, then.

          • Z-man19

            A suck/blow sweater, I want one

          • 10thMountainFire

            With ‘Warrior’ on the front.

            Dark Salad!

          • Z-man19

Ok birdhead, we want 100 of these by next week. Mmd will send you a check

          • mightymikeD

a clean, open-ice one though… (sometimes American spellings are fun, kids!)

SRSLY look for some “character” designs soon, which, if I feel up to it, I may make in high-quality PDFs that can be downloaded and printed on a shirt..

          • Z-man19

Ask Sam, I’m guessing he’s got the CI logo on some digital form or another. I assume that’s what you want

          • 10thMountainFire

The fan club could be called ‘The Committed Warriors’.

          • birdhead

hey, sounds like more fun than my actual job.

        • mightymikeD

you knit with barbed wire (3-ply) using icepicks as needles. Or attempt to turn a heel.. either will do

        • nextgame

“… sucks and blows at the same time.”
That’s a good way to pop your eardrums, or your eyes out of their sockets.

    • Accipiter

      How’s the hangover Bob ?

  • Waylon

Not to beat a dead horse, but this commenting system sucks donkeys. No, it sucks Whales.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

I’ve kind of gotten used to it, in the same way one gets used to a boil in a tender spot, but the only thing I really miss is being able to post hilarious animated GIF’s and pics.

    • mightymikeD

      it does. Oh well.

    • 10thMountainFire

I see you capitalized Whales there, you Oxford Comma motherfucker.

      • Waylon

        …so I’ve been told.

    • http://www.thecommittedindian.com/ Matt McClure

This is pretty fucking rich coming from a guy who couldn’t figure out SBN’s INFINITELY BETTER commenting system to save his family’s life.

For the eleventy billionth time, that system was proprietary. It’s not coming here. Disqus is the absolute closest approximation, and if it’s good enough to work for exponentially larger sites such as The AV Club, then you motherfuckers can suck it up.

      • Accipiter

Alain Vigneault has a club ?

        • 10thMountainFire

          You’re a goddamn sniper.

          • Z-man19

That guy’s fucking gold isn’t he?

          • 10thMountainFire

He’s like Silent Bob up in this shit.

          • Z-man19

            HISBUITS

      • mightymikeD

Easy… from my point of view it’s not the difference between this system and SBN.. it’s the strange things that happen: for the last day my inbox has been getting filled with notifications of Disqus posts from three to four days ago. Also it frequently just decides to throw me out to the main page when I attempt to comment. But these are just niggles and understandable considering this site was created on a budget rather than under a much-larger umbrella. It sucks but it’s what we’ve got to work with, so cool. Please don’t refer to me as a motherfucker again.

        • 10thMountainFire

Well, speaking for myself, I have certainly earned being called ‘motherfucker’ on many occasions. Usually by US Army officers… usually after saving their ass.

        • DesertHawk

That’s kinda been my beef to mmD, the inconsistency, not the differences. But I’m mostly over it, I’m here enough that my habits have adapted to the situation at hand.

        • http://twitter.com/hair_helmet hairhelmet

What about if we want to say “That MMD is one Bad MotherFucker” like in Pulp Fiction?

        • http://twitter.com/VULTR3 Mike

Also, have you read SBN articles recently? I swear, it’s the most vanilla dumb down articles I’ve ever seen. Maybe I’ve become jaded with the writers here, but I’ll gladly take this system over reading that drivel.

“Who has been the best hawks player this season”… It’s like a goddamn 5th grade writing exercise.

        • http://www.thecommittedindian.com/ Matt McClure

I apologize if that portion was taken in the wrong tone. It was meant as a term of endearment.

          • 10thMountainFire

…and those of us on the south side of things cheer on completely.

          • AirTrafficAJ

            This makes me smile.

      • Waylon

You have quite the customer service POV here – I’ll be sure to copy it in my next endeavor, where anyone who complains about anything is told to basically fuck right off.

        • jackattack

He kind of has a point though. I mean, we do call a failed reply a waylon for a reason.

        • http://www.thecommittedindian.com/ Matt McClure

Just meeting you on your level of tact in issuing the complaint.

          • Waylon

Sure there was some snark there, no question, but going to DEFCON 5 was completely out of proportion to the comment in question. I never made one complaint about the prior commenting system and refrained from doing so regarding the new one, until now. I also have a hard time believing that you’d say anything like that to my face.

          • http://www.thecommittedindian.com/ Matt McClure

Is that some kind of threat? Having not met me at all in person, that’s quite an assumption to make.

If you’d like to continue this via email, you’re more than welcome to. You know how to find me.

          • Waylon

Not a threat at all – I just didn’t think you’d call someone a motherfucker because of a complaint about one aspect of your product.

          • http://www.thecommittedindian.com/ Matt McClure

See my reply to Mike D.

          • Waylon

Fair enough. BTW, I did try to meet you – last year when you guys had a meet – up in my neighborhood. I think it was a bar on Lincoln, just north of Addison. Had no idea what you guys looked like, so no luck.

        • cliffkoroll

          Waylon waylon waylon,

I suggest you demand a full refund. See where I’m going with that? We’re not customers.

Also, you can’t pretend to be unaware of McClure’s legendarily thin skin, can you? You see how he writes: dude’s an artist, allowances must be made (no sarc.)

Thirdly, I’m pretty much convinced that the crappy interface here is a feature, not a bug. Jeez, think of all the hours the TOS had to spend at SCH babysitting and refereeing silly internet fights. Isn’t it supposed to be, primarily, about the hockey analysis? The whole commenting structure, IMO, is a secondary issue.

      • http://twitter.com/oregon_hawk Oregon_hawk

Also CNN, if i’m not mistaken.

      • jekyll1489

It’s funny how it really never ends. We’ve got a team out there quite literally on a historically epic run so the grumbling and misery goes to other areas.

      • wardrums

yeah, take one in the nuts for the team Waylon

    • Mohel

      Totally agree

    • ahnfire

Yea, we all miss the old system, but you’ll get used to Disqus after a while. The more you use it, the easier it becomes though, I promise. I don’t mind it as much now, personally. I’m still trying to figure out all its quirks though.

  • disqus_rMzjo09Y8m

I just saw this stat, the Hawks are 24-2-7 with Oduya in the lineup

    • 10thMountainFire

Yeah, that is pretty fucking Oduya-tastic. Wow.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Does that include last year’s playoff walk* and his rather, er, average performance against the Yotes?

      * Can’t bring myself to call it a playoff run, and in Johnny’s defense, he was far from the greatest underachiever in the Indianhead.

      • girlphoenix

        it’s only regular season

        • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Thought it must be. While the ‘All your points belong to us,’ run has been fun, I’m far more interested in what happens in the post season. Another one and out will take all the shine off the President’s Cup, and it’s happened before.

          • Paul the Fossil

If you add in the playoffs it becomes 26-6-7. And Oduya is plus-14 for those 39 games so far.

          • jekyll1489

If you include the playoffs its actually 26-3-10.

          • Paul the Fossil

            Ah right, good catch.

  • 10thMountainFire

Given this extraordinary Oduya-stat, I have to ask… have we nicknamed him proper yet?

    • Z-man19

Does he really need one? Owinya?

      • 10thMountainFire

Does he really need one? Does he really NEED one?!

        I have no idea.

Hogs won today in a shootout with color commentary from Ben Smith. ♥ Their special “Hamboni” (a zamboni with the tank taken out so people can ride in it) got stuck on the ice and delayed the third period for about twenty minutes.

Yuck. Yeah, I’d had seizures and not fun. Not going to watch a vid.

          • 10thMountainFire

Nope. I’ve seen a soldier have a seizure… recently, actually this spring. It scared me to death. Helplessness comes to mind… we just kept him up and comfortable until other medics arrived. He’s fine now.

          • DesertHawk

Reminds me of the player who got his throat cut… that was freaky to see, fortunately his teams medical dude was actually a trained combat medic, and just held him closed til they got to the hospital, forgot the players name though.

          • 10thMountainFire

            Outstanding:

Malarchuk’s life was saved by the team’s trainer, Jim Pizzutelli, a former Army medic who had served in Vietnam. He reached into Malarchuk’s neck and pinched off the bleeding, not letting go until doctors arrived to begin suturing the wound.

I saw Jack Johnson tweet about someone getting their throat cut in a game today. And yick it was in one of the US Junior leagues so it was a kid.

          • 10thMountainFire

In high school I remember a few guys wore the throat guard religiously.

  • girlphoenix

Anyone watching Blues/Canucks? Why can’t they both lose?

    • 10thMountainFire

      From ESPN Chicago:

And now the Blackhawks are coming up on history. They have a chance to tie the 2006-07Anaheim Ducks for the best start to a season with points in 16 consecutive games.

To accomplish that, the Blackhawks will have to record a point against the Vancouver Canucks at the United Center on Tuesday. Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp found that to be fitting.

“Just throw some more whatever, incentive into the game,” Sharp said. “It seems like it’s something new whenever we play those guys. So it’s always a fun atmosphere, especially in this building.”

      • Accipiter

My favourite line is, “We had 40 (minutes),” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “They had a great 20, and the clock ran out, which is nice.”

        • 10thMountainFire

Yeah, I could picture Q while reading that as well.

        • Sparky_The_Barbarian

In other words, the Kings didn’t lose the game, they just ran out of time (Old Vince Lombardi Saying).

        • ahnfire

that’s probably the most honest quote we’ll ever get from Q.

          • birdhead

          • ahnfire

          • Paul the Fossil

            Yea:
“That was criminal,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. “They’ve got to call the cops after that performance. (Emery) stole two points. He was spectacular. I’ve never ever been outplayed, outchanced like that in my life.”

    • Z-man19

  • activestick

    Just saw this

Chicago acquired Johnny Oduya on 2-27-2012. With him in the lineup Blackhawks are 24-2-7.

    • Accipiter

At least the record with him isn’t 2-27-2012.

      • 10thMountainFire

In light of this extraordinary statistic and demonstration of Johnny Oduya’s value to the team and our lack of an appropriate moniker here at CI, I officially bring EverybodyWantsSome’s idea to nickname Johnny Oduya to ‘Johnny Two Points’ to the floor for vote:

        Yay or nay

        I vote: ‘Yay’.

        • DesertHawk

Nay. Oduya is practically a nickname already.

“it’s this type of coaching that made Joel Quenneville so successful in his first couple seasons with the Hawks. He knew where guys fit in and where they didn’t. Instead of just moving things around like a mad scientist, he’d make calculated risks”

(insert 7.39 minute pause due to gut laughing here)

Yes, that was EXACTLY every blog writer’s sentiment on Coach Q’s random line generator during the Cup season.

Sorry John, but “who you crappin?”

    • http://twitter.com/hair_helmet hairhelmet

Have to go with CNS on this. I remember a pretty vocal group insisting was only successful because he inherited the genius-built team of Dale Tallon and that once Tallon was gone, the team would spiral downward into an abyss of firing Q and the moustache he rode in on.

    • jackattack

My thoughts exactly. I think it was just more apt then because a lot of the guys on that team had played together and were somewhat interchangable.

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Come on, Blues, don’t win the game, but bring your nasty and wear those Canucks out.

  • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

“Does it really take a teammate getting crushed in the nutsack by a Drew Doughty one-timer to find inspiration?…If anything, I see that and I start to reconsider my career choice.”

That’s because, unlike you and I, these guys are WARRIORS. They exist on a higher level. We simply can not comprehend what motivates them. Sometimes it’s testicles. Sometimes it’s fighting. Sometimes it’s testicle fighting. (I’ve heard Bickell and Shaw do some version of this in between periods for inspiration. And Bollig just punches himself in the nads in a corner)

Remember when DK hit Sami Solo in the coin purse? Vancouver went on to win that game.

    Coincidence? I think not.

    • Z-man19

It was you then? You sneaky bastard

      • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

Nope. I initially thought it was mmD.

I’m pretty sure I troll enough already using my regular moniker to not have to change names to do so.

        • Z-man19

I was pretty sure it wasn’t a regular when the individual kept on the ‘warrior’ bit. You aren’t that big of an asshole and I’m sure you would’ve had a chart or some numbers anyway :)

Testicular fortitude… you don’t have to be nuts to play in the NHL, but it sure helps.
So does this make Seabs a Soprano?

Strapping on the pads and skates is the next-closest thing to going to war. And fuck your Oxford comma.

    • Toews still makes funny faces!

I got kicked in the jewels once (well a few times) I don’t recall other men around me being inspired, rather they grimmiced in pain and shied away. So I am going to say yes, it is coincidence, it was not ancient aliens!

    • Toews still makes funny faces!

Did you see the Hawks skated with the Wounded Almost Warriors at soldier Field this weekend.

[sarcasm implied for those who do not know the back story]

    • wardrums

“Bollig just punches himslef in the nads in the corner” – that image is just oo funny
By the way – not sure Seabrook would not have gotten out of the way if he could have!
At the very least, these NHL players are tough nuts to crack.

It’s crazy to think that if the Hawks were just vaguely better at the shootout, they could have all the points.

    • Hawkeytalk

Ugh that’s me, forgetting my un & pw for this site and the tablet forgot it too. Derp.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Trying to figure out why, when I make a short list of teams I DON’T want to face in the playoffs, the Ducks do not make that list.

    • cliffkoroll

Yeah. Everyone is talking about the Hawks ‘no regulation loss’ streak, but in reality, it’s a ‘no regulation OR OVERTIME loss’ streak. Ignoring the tiddlywinks competition, the Hawks remain undefeated at hockey this year. Under pre-shootout rules, they’d be 12-0-4, so they’ve only picked up one of four charity points. The Ducks are 4-1 in shoot-outs. Under the old rules, they’d be a much less impressive 7-3-5. Also, no shoot-outs in the playoffs.

      • cliffkoroll

oops…the Hawks would be 11-0-4 under the old rules. Still…

  • http://www.facebook.com/enrique.spetezi.1 Enrique Spetezi

One full damn month without a regulation loss, 27 out of 30 points, and still only 4 points clear of a team that has a game in hand.

    • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

Those were my incredulous thoughts too.

      • http://www.thecommittedindian.com/ PowrFwd37

Oddly enough… I couldn’t help but take note of that very situation as well.

    • jackattack

      RE: Fuck the lockout.

    • cliffkoroll

      Try this on for size:

      1. 56 points should get you in the playoffs, based on 95 x 48 / 82 = 55.6

      2. The Hawks need 29 points in their final 33 games to reach 56.

      3. Only the dregs of the league can’t manage basically a point a game over a longish stretch like 33 games.

      4. If the Hawks play like the dregs of the league from here on out, they don’t deserve to make the playoffs and will likely get smoked even if they do.

      5. Much better to be healthy, rested, and playing well down the stretch than to be a top seed (Right, LA Kings? What do you think, St. Louis Blues?)

      6. Playoff horse races are exciting, but not good for the lining of my stomach. Much better as a detached spectator sport.

      7. Don’t worry, be happy.

      • Paul the Fossil

I think actually that the 8th playoff spot will be closer to 50 points. That’s because for this season there are no inter-conference games and the West lately has won a strong majority of those, meaning that the West’s team standing point totals have been a shade higher than the East’s. Meaning also that it has taken a few more points to make the West playoffs than the East. But that won’t be true this season.

  • http://twitter.com/VULTR3 Mike

I’ve played rec hockey on a team of my close and childhood friends. When one of them goes down trying to do right for the team, it gets you fired up to play and win for them. It’s not that hard to understand is it?

Also, was that a Bollig complement? Naaahhhh… haha

  • wowwowweewoo

I’d like to chime in on the Blackhawks record with Oduya on the team and suggest a nickname: 2duya? Like instead of Oduya (read zero do ya), it’s “will 2duya?”

    • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

I’m going 2duya a favor and forget this ever happened.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Given his play yesterday, how about, “Saves Goals with this face, takes stupid penalties Uya?”

  • Joe Banks

Why did the refs fail to call LA for running Ray Emery late in the game? Did I miss something?

    • Toews still makes funny faces!

My guess is it was the same ref who did not notice Crow getting bulldozed by a derailing freight train right in front of him either.

    • http://twitter.com/hair_helmet hairhelmet

Razor did try to sell it by pulling weed-for-dick down with him

  • Toews still makes funny faces!

    My Brain got lost here
“Again, it’s still very early and the Hawks haven’t really faced any kind of adversity”

The next game will be game #16 it will also mark the 1/3 point of the season. Out of the 15 played, 10 have been on the road (2/3 of the season thus far) were the Hawks went 8-0-2, including pair of of back-back games which they went 3-0-1 and 3rd set of Back to Back bringing their overall tally in those games to 5-0-1. They have gone 2-0-0 vs the SC Defending Champ and 4-0-0 vs the Central and 5-0-2 vs the other top 8 teams in the WC.

I do not think we can consider it “early in the season” anymore (let alone very early), this is now the middle 1/3 coming up and I think the Hawks have faced adversity just in their first ten games in the schedule itself, besides being 2-0-0 without Crow and their backup being 5-0-0 overall.

    • jackattack

Fels is playing it down a little too much, because what you’re saying is completely true, but I can’t help but agree that this team hasn’t faced the kind of adversity that fosters growth yet. And at the rate they’re playing, they may not. It’s sort of a strange precipice, cause as we’ve all talked about ad nauseum, there are issues that are gonna need to be shored up eventually. But winning masks those problems, and brushes would could bite the team in the ass under the rug for later. Either way, I think the take-away right now, points streak aside, is this; this is a very, very improved team that is cool under pressure, tightly knit from top to bottom and very talented on both ends of the ice. Yes, there are deficiencies here and there, but no team is perfect, not even the ’10 Cup team.

  • DesertHawk

Can anyone else get to HockeeNight? Curious if the issue is on my end or theirs.

    • Bullitt315

      Theirs.

      • DesertHawk

Seems to be working now. Thanks for the back up though.

  • ahnfire

Question for everyone: on the first goal, Quick had lost his stick & apparently Bollig prevented a LAK player from sliding Quick’s goalie paddle to him, which lead to Quick not having a stick for Seab’s goal. Sutter was saying it should’ve been a penalty & goal disallowed.

Is there some rule about the goalie being required a stick? I didn’t think there was, nor that there’s a rule in place that says that you can’t impede a goalie from retrieving his stick. Am I wrong? Is there some rule I’m unaware of?

    • Toews still makes funny faces!

      Rule 56.2 (Interference Minor Penalty)
A minor penalty shall be imposed on a player who deliberately knocks a stick out of an opponent’s hand, or who prevents a player who has dropped his stick or any other piece of equipment from regaining possession of it.

So yes Bollig should get an INTF Penalty

BUT BUT BUT, the LAK player should have ALSO gotten a penalty as well for violating rule 10.4 (part of only being able to HAND not slide the stick to the goalie) This is also a 2 minute minor.

10.4 Broken Stick – Goalkeeper – A goalkeeper may continue to play with a broken stick until a stoppage of play or until he has one legally handed to him by a teammate. The teammate must hand the stick to him. He cannot throw it or slide it to the goalkeeper (this includes situations where the goalkeeper has lost his stick and a teammate is trying to return it to him). For a violation of this rule, a minor penalty for throwing the stick shall be assessed to the offending player (no penalty to the goalkeeper for receiving the stick).

So both should have gotten offsetting penalties, or to Sutter’s shagrin, no penalty (offsetting still) on BOTH doing illegal acts. The LAK player sliding the stick and Bollig stopping him from doing it.

      • ahnfire

ah, thanks TMFF. The LAK player slid the stick first so even if it was called, we had possession so it would’ve been a delayed call. Bollig moved the stick further away (although on my rewatch, it didn’t look like Quick reached for the stick at all) which would’ve made it offsetting. New question: if a penalty is made during a delayed call, does the ref just whistle the play dead?

        (sidenote: chagrin)

        • http://twitter.com/ChiNativeSon ChicagoNativeSon

          (#ShawGrin)

          • Toews still makes funny faces!

            Cha-Ching

        • Toews still makes funny faces!

Unless it is a Penalty a Linesman can call (like Too Much Man) the penalty should be delayed until the offending team has possession of the puck, or something compelling should stop play like Raffi Torres severed head is getting in the way of the Hawks scoring a goal on the delayed call. But if a Penalty is called on both teams, the play should stop immediately since both teams are an offending team. This is covered under Rule 15.

  • cliffkoroll

Maybe it’s just bum-slaying, but Kruger is looking like a thing! Big plus in Stan’s column.

Did anyone see the post-game interview with (#1 star) Kruger after Friday night’s game? He’s just a kid and maybe his English is shaky or he was nervous. But the first word out of his moth in response to each of three questions was ‘No’. He wasn’t contradicting the interview babe, just one of the oddest verbal tics I’ve ever seen. Anyway, I chuckled.

  • wardrums

Quennville does look like a mad scientist. Kane had the best assist on Sharps goal – I didn’t see it at first but a friend pointed it out to me. What a brillaint move.
I say it too much, but I just love watching Frolik skate – he’s a Mikail Barishnykoff(Sorry don’t want to look up how to spell it) on skates
    Always enjoy your wraps FF
