Angry At Numbers

Thought it was a good time to do an off-day Angry At Numbers.

40.9, 59.1

These are Marcus Kruger’s Corsi percentages in Game 1 and Game 2. I’m not sure they actually signify anything at all, other than in Game 1 Kruger was dealing with Mikko Koivu for most of it and in Game 2 that switched to Mikael Granlund. I assume this will be something Minnesota will notice and they will try and get Koivu out against him again in Game 3. Though this could be a result of the Hawks sitting back for a lot of Game 1 and no so much in the second game. Just a juxtaposition. Kruger has also struggled at the dot this series, winning 30% in Game 1 and only 45% in Game 2. Considering the amount of times he starts shifts in the defensive zone, it’s a small worry.

1.50, .951

Corey Crawford’s goals-against average and save-percentage during this six game win streak. Also, the Hawks hadn’t won as many as six in a row since the end of November.

58.9%, 77%-49%

I saw some people bitching at Tracey Myers of CSN on Twitter today about Nick Leddy and how he hasn’t developed. That’s Leddy’s Corsi percentage for the playoffs, which leads the team. Yes, he’s incredibly sheltered, starting 77% of his shifts in the offensive zone whic is that second number. The third number is the amount of shifts Leddy finishes in the offensive zone. That may seem daunting, but Patrick Kane’s numbers are 77% and 53%. Basically, there’s just about only one way to go when you start that much at one end of the ice. But with Keith, Seabrook, Hjalmarsson and Oduya taking all the tough assignments and doing well, there’s really no other role to play. Maybe Leddy hasn’t been as good as I want to believe, but I can’t see where he’s been a total disaster either.

1-for-27

That’s Patrick Sharp’s shooting rate at the moment these playoffs. He had one other drought like this this season in March. He went eight games without scoring on 26 shots. He had another in January where he had one goal in 10 games on 42 shots.

  • XMF

You fit it in just under the deadline of Math Monday.

  • bizarrohairhelmet

That Sharpie stat. Since he lead the team in points, when he rains, he deluges.

    • XMF

To piggyback on your comment, when he deluges, the team soars. When Sharp lost his mind during December, the Hawks (without Crow) ripped through the NHL like a knife through venison.

      • YoAdrienne

I am waiting for him to lose his mind again. It’s coming, and I’m betting it’s when the Hawks need it the most.

        • XMF
          • YoAdrienne

I remember that well! The great thing about Sharp is that he’s usually still contributing in one way or another, even if he’s not getting points. I don’t worry too much about him. Last year, it took Toews and Kane forever to heat up. But, others picked up the slack until they did. That’s the great thing about this team.

          • XMF

The run by Sharp this past winter was among the more obvious examples of a player being ‘in the zone’ that I have been fortunate to witness in 30 years of watching hockey. If he played in the 80s, Sharp would have been a regular 100 point a year player.

          • CozBullsFan

As would Toews, Kane, and Hossa.

          • CozBullsFan

            Play of the year IMHO.

          • ChicagoNativeSon

Love that video. So much win on one play…

#1. Probably Sharp’s most noticeable defensive play. Ever.

Incredible hustle during a bad line change and where the Hawks defenders got caught flat-footed (admit it, you now want to double-check to see if it was Seabrook, don’t you?). A desperation lift of the stick from behind – but then to skate away with the puck too?? Amazing. And then the composure to eeeemmediately look up ice for a counter-attack.

#2. Spectacular patience and finishing move by Toews.

            #3. Hossa.

So easily overlooked on that goal is what Hossa does to make it happen. No matter how much we try to not take him for granted, we will still take him for granted. This is why my sweater reads “Hossa”.

Johnson hooks Hossa, who is out in front of the play breaking for the net. Hossa could have pulled up there, as Edzo is always preaching. But when you have the chance to get Johnny 1on1 with a goalie, you give it to him.

Hossa holds Johnson’s stick and skates him right out of the play, otherwise Toews’ options are limited to one side of the net and he never has the opportunity to make that move. Greatness is often a very subtle thing.

            Oh, and of course…

            #4. Strrrretch Passssss! Yeee-ahhhh!

          • XMF

            1. Stretch passes are bad, mmkay?

            2. Toews’s great move to finish it is almost lost in one’s admiration for Sharp’s play(s) in the sequence.

Just an incredible all-around series of events.

          • The Other One

My bet is that play sealed Sharp’s inclusion on the Canadian Olympic Team

And it was Hjammer and Oduya on D

        • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Save it for the next two rounds.

  • CozBullsFan

    New thread smell. Ahhhhh!

  • 334Rules

Were I a future Hawks opponent, I would be VERY AFRAID of that last number. At some point, Shooter is gonna have a course correction.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

Can we nominate him for the next Olympic team that’s to be determined the week after the Cup is awarded?

    • Joe Banks

Agreed. The sooner, the better. He’s saving himself for round 3.

  • CozBullsFan

Kruger’s FO% probably has more to do with who he was matched up against, much like his Corsi.

    Crow being Crow.

Not even going to touch the Leddy subject.

    Sharpie will break out soon.

  • Accipiter
    • cliffkoroll

Ok, this is amazing. CNS, this dude has ripped you off basically verbatim (or vice versa).

Bickell, the CORSI Colossus! Too much.

      • CozBullsFan

        Maybe he is CNS?

        • ChicagoNativeSon

Nope. You can tell because Scott Cullen is sometimes wrong.
(I read so in his comments section)

      • ChicagoNativeSon

Trying a bit too hard to take one comment regarding Bickell having a high reg season Corsi ratings and low PDO and turn it into a disparaging meme, no?

Is it because it doesn’t fit neatly into your “Playoff Bickell Beast Mode” narrative?

Because I already owned the copyright to that one too. And both narratives work in tandem perfectly well for me. Your mileage and ego may vary.

        Bickell. Bickell. Bickell.

        • cliffkoroll

You exhibit a supreme lack of self-awareness in introducing the ego motif. Discerning readers understand that Truth alone is my mistress.

Do you know what mitigating means? Because that’s what your pile of crap stats on Bickell’s regular season amount to. A tiny asterisk- he wasn’t actually quite as dreadful as the eye test and surface numbers suggest.

In Bickell’s 2013-2014 Cavalcade of Amazing, he didn’t even crack the 62-game minimum required to get a peek at his usage numbers on Extra Skater.

Dude, you have eyes. You really thought he was ok this year?

In 46 career playoff games, he has 18 goals, 32 points, and is +21. Is there anything in his 279 game regular season career in the same ballpark? I mean, even close?

          • ChicagoNativeSon

My meme, dammit. Mine. Leggo my ego.

Again, you seem to believe these two narratives can’t exist simultaneously. Bickell was unlucky in the reg season. Bickell plays harder in the playoffs.

Stats are stats. Bickell’s PDO shows an extreme example of “bad luck”, not just some slight case.

To paint me in a corner as if I implied there has not been an escalation in his play is way off though. Your beef might be with the media who have glommed onto the Bickell Playoff Hulk story.

There’s also a misunderstanding of the stats here by many. (including maybe you?) PDO doesn’t really measure how many goals a player should score during the regular season, but it does provide insight if a player has an unexpectedly (high or) low number of assists or PlusMinus. That’d about it imo. Bickell had both.

Bickell’s Goals/60 was 4th highest on the team. 4th highest, ahead of guys like Toews, Saad and Shaw. So when he was out there, he was producing. So I don’t completely trust the eye test here to say he was bad. We saw less of him, so I believe that influences our narratives. I also think the knee may he been an issue. Dunno.

Low Assists: Bickell had 0 secondary assists. According to stats guys, secondary assists are not a repeatable skill. Sh% of team when Bickell was on ice: 6.58%.

Low PlusMinus: Last year the Hawks had a .960 Sv% when THE Viktor Stalberg was on the ice (.946 when Bickell was on the ice). This season the Hawks had an .890 Sv% with Bickell on the ice. That’s nothing but bad luck.

So, in long-winded conclusion, your eye test is not – nor is anyone else’s – as reliable as you think, because if it was, you would have noticed the Hawks were a very good possession team with Bickell on the ice, that he was getting his shots and scoring on them, his defense was sound, but he was victimized by some bad luck, and probably got less playing time because of it and for motivational purposes (see Q below). And at times, he was definitely ‘meh” but certainly not “dreadful” as you imply.

But yes, PlayoffBickell > RegSeasonBickell. I stated such in the same thread as you linked and again in this season’s predictions where I even foresaw him spending some time banished to the 3rd line.

            http://thecommittedindian.com/wheel-it-out-here-carnac/#comment-1064978433

“we’ll likely see Bickell and Saad flip-flopping throughout the season. Saad, because he simply fits well on the 1st line. And Bickell, because he’ll probably occasionally need to get “Rocky 3′d” to the 3rd line until the playoffs to remember what got him to where he is now. And from past examples, Q obviously is well aware of this too.”

            Walk with me brother.

          • ChicagoNativeSon

            Holy wall of text.

Serves me right for typing that out during free moments during 10 hours at work.

Cliffs Notes Summarized version: I’m right. You’re not as right.

          • cliffkoroll

I think it’s just you and me now. I have an idea for a stat. Imagine a metric: during a face-off at center ice, the metric is zero, when the puck is in the back of your net it is -1, and when the puck is in the other net, it’s +1. Each player receives a score equal to the difference in this metric during each occasion in which he has a play on the puck. So, if someone rescues a puck just before it goes in his own net, he starts out at like a -0.9. If he skates at down the ice and scores, he gets a +1.9 for that possession.

How much better off is the team’s position after the person makes a play on a puck compared to when he is first presented an opportunity?

You tally this up for all players for all possessions and you’ve got something.

Of course, this is statistically unfeasible. But that is kind of my point. We all know about cognitive biases, but this metric, on an intuitive level, is not difficult for a human brain to process. It’s the sort of thing humans will still be able to do after the machines have taken over.

Back in the real world, there is a rough and ready version of this statistic- it’s called plus minus. And basement-dwelling stat nerds hate plus minus. They’re liable to say shit like +/- is an unreliable indicator, even over a whole season. To which I say: Jonathan Toews would like a word with you over in that bathroom stall, where he will dunk your head in the toilet and give you the swirly of your life.

Anyway, Bickell was a minus 6 this year on a team where the only other minus (-1) was the Immortal Brandon Bollig. Luck explains a small amount of this.

          • ChicagoNativeSon

So in a nutshell, you therefore believe that in 2013 Viktor Stalberg and John Scott were 2 of top 5 defensive players in the entire league.

            http://www.behindthenet.ca/nhl_statistics.php?ds=30&s=33&f1=2012_s&f2=5v5&f7=30-&c=0+1+3+5+4+6+7+8+13+14+29+30+32+33+34+45+46+63+67

Because you really can’t have it both ways.

Not sure how you reconcile that and maintain your position that luck is just “a small amount” of PlusMinus? Stubborn much?

I’m also not sure how you look at a much more valuable statistic, Corsi, see that Bickell was near the top of the league, and then use PlusMinus to judge his performance?

On a bell curve, a number of players are going fall well outside the normal distribution. Everyone who deals with stats KNOWS there are going to be these outliers, but somehow, when faced with those outliers, many can’t accept their existence.

I’m not saying Bickell was great, but I recall one week (or about) where I saw him get a minus on three plays where he wasn’t even involved in the play (e.g. line changes). No, he wasn’t going to be a +20 this year, but the dude was still way unlucky.

And no, Jonathan Toews wouldn’t have understood the concept, or even cared to.

        • cliffkoroll

As far as copyright, I staked my claim on June 30, 2013:

          http://thecommittedindian.com/hawks-trade-bolland-to-toronto-for-three-picks/#comment-947641074

          Excerpt:

“In 38 playoff games (sample size?), Bickell has basically out-Daved Dave: 13G, 11A, and an absurd +17. For better and worse, Bickell’s ‘step-up’ from the regular season is more lopsided than Dave.”

          What you got?

    • Z-man19

I’m thinking Q may have to do some juggling on the top lines playing at Minny. Smith and the Patricks got horsed a bit in game 2 facing a lot of Minny’s 3rd line, I think. Q may need to swap 88 and 81 to counter Minny trying to take advantage of that.

  • 2883

Patrick Sharp is due for a positive regression. Shit’s about to get real

    • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

According to Extra Skater, Sharp’s playoff 5-on-5 on-ice PDO is 103.6. Doesn’t that mean he’s over-performing and due for a correction? I’m sure I’m looking at this wrong, so please chime in if anyone wants to enlighten me.

      • Z-man19

Could mean that Crow’s sv% is really good when sharp is on the ice as well. Sharp has 1 goal on like 27 shots so his PDO isn’t high because of that

        • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

It shows his 5-on-5 on-ice Sh% at 9.1% and All Situations at 3.7% (the 1 for 27 rate). So, it must have something to do with power plays or his team mates. That’s where I’m curious to learn what to look for.

          • Z-man19

He only has 4 shots on the PP so I’m not sure how they get his PDO over 100. A better stats person than I will have to explain that one

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Because PDO is a team measurement.

          • Z-man19

So the 9.1 sh% is for everyone when Sharp is on the ice? Alrighty then, you’re the best bhh

          • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

I was looking at some other players and there are several with really high Sh%, 18%-28%. So, if # is on-ice with one of them, then that will skew his PDO. That helps a lot! Thanks Z and BHH!

          • lizmcneill

What’s Showtime’s sh% at the minute? Gotta be high and he’s skating with Sharpy a lot.

          • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

Top 4: Towes 28.6%, Bickell 21.7%, Rosival 20%, and Kane 20%. Four more tied at 18.2%.

      • birdhead

“According to Extra Skater, Sharp’s playoff 5-on-5 on-ice PDO is 103.6. Doesn’t that mean he’s over-performing and due for a correction?”

Kind of. PDO doesn’t talk about what you’re doing, it talks about what is happening while you’re on the ice. In Patrick Sharp’s case, Crawford is at .945 when he’s on the ice and, collectively, when he’s on the ice the Blackhawks are shooting at 9.1%. (If you compare that to the team stats, Sharp is getting quite a bit better goaltending from Crawford and worse shooting relative to the rest of the team.) Anyway both of those numbers are quite high, the save percentage more than the shooting percentage. You’d expect Crawford to allow a few more goals going forward and you’d expect the Blackhawks to start scoring fewer goals. (Exactly how much you’d expect will depend on a) how good you think Crawford is and b) how good you think the Blackhawks are at shooting, obviously.)

However, the proportion of those goals when Sharp is on the ice – you’d still expect some of those to come from Sharp himself. So even if the number of goals comes down, the number of goals from Sharp is probably going to go up even as the goals from his linemates drop.

        • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

If we’re talking purely regressing to the mean, it’s still true Sharpie is due for a hot streak. It’s just that a lot of other players have been super-hot jack up the PDO. Thanks for the excellent info!

          • birdhead

            yep, exactly.

  • CozBullsFan

    Let’s go Rangers!

  • Andrew Heitman

If Nick Leddy, at 23, is the fifth defenseman on this team- with Seabrook, Keith, Hammer, and Oduya….can we really complain? He’s still a kid….

    • XMF

Leddy had an outstanding Game One versus Minnesota. I simply don’t know where the ‘Leddy sucks’ meme is coming from.

I suppose the same place as ‘Saad sucks’. Sam is correct: Leddy”s not the total disaster some would like to believe he is.

      • bizarrohairhelmet

I’ve only seen a “Q doesn’t trust Leddy” thing, which would be hard to argue against.

        • XMF

No doubt, that’s definitely a solid assumption given his sheltering, QoC, etc. But there is a part of the fan base that moans about Leddy just as they did Saad. Myths abound. They will be Shattered.

          • Andrew Heitman

I agree. This is only his second full season. This fan base needs to remember a few really awful years and appreciate the depth when you can call this kid a bum,,,

          • XMF

There are enough meatballs in the fan base to make the case for public beatings.

          • Andrew Heitman

Truth. WE ARE LOSING THE FUCKING HITS STAT!!! WHATS THE POINT!?

          • XMF

Winning the hits stat category gets you a summer vacation in lovely downtown St. Louis. Hotel and airfare available in package deals as low as the cost of a six-game Blues ticket package.

          • Andrew Heitman

Do we have to give back the 2 most recent cups? Or all of them? Cause…uh….

      • CozBullsFan

Ask Neo and CNS. They have fancy stats and links.

        • Andrew Heitman

The fancy stats have their place- thats not the failing.
The failing by most is in the interpretation of the stats….

          • CozBullsFan

Don’t try to argue with them. Even if they are wrong, they will bring more fancy stats to say he is bad. It’s a lose lose proposition.

          • Z-man19

I’m with DH, I don’t think anyone is saying he’s awful, he’s just not better than our top 4

          • Andrew Heitman

Im not sure you can bring along a player any faster whjo isn’t a super star.

          • CozBullsFan

When certain people post stats pointing to him being bad, while saying his partner has nothing to do with it, that’s a problem. Leddy’s numbers are fantastic considering his situation.

          • Z-man19

Haven’t his numbers been better with Rozs pretty much all year? I think this may be a moot point in about a year anyway, not sure I see them signing Odie again.

          • 2883

I see them trying to trade him this off-season

          • lizmcneill

Which one? I agree one of the dmen probably goes.

          • 2883

            Odie

          • XMF

            Johnny Two Points.

          • lizmcneill

I hope these guys don’t read hockey boards. (go away, Dunc).

          • 2883

I mean, chances are they don’t and I don’t want the Hawks to move any of their dmen (Even Moonpie or Rozie, even though we like to malign them , they’re pretty decent 6th dmen) but the cap is the cap.

          • lizmcneill

The kids definitely have twitter (Kaner’s on the borderline between “uses it for PR” and “actually uses it”), and Keith apparently reads up on the rumors, hence my telling him to cease and desist, but hopefully they stay away from hfboards and bleacher report.

          • 2883

I’m not sure fans read bleacher report, much less athlete.s

          • CozBullsFan

Leddy with Rozy has been great. I have a problem with picking and choosing stats to fit narratives.

          • neo1978

Could people stop just making shit up? Especially when you are calling out other posters by name? If you don’t understand what somebody is saying just ask for a better explanation.

The whole strawman complaint comes up so often because of the huge difference between what gets stated and what people like you try to make it out to be.

          • ChicagoNativeSon

You know what’s useless? Trying to have a discussion without you chiming in with a passive-aggressive straw man complaint.

Help! I’m being oppressed by the “fancy stats people”!

If you’ve ever cared to notice, posters like me, neo, and birdhead (and many others, but we’re in this thread), tend to use our eye test much more than stats – and our often detailed descriptions in our comments of what we believe we’re seeing on the ice should give us that benefit of the doubt, whether you agree or not.

          • CozBullsFan

Dude, I was fucking around last night. Take a chill pill.

          • ChicagoNativeSon

Naw. You do it incessantly, but whatevers.
And of course, you were only joking…

            http://www.bowdoindailysun.com/2010/11/i-was-only-joking-and-nine-more-passive-aggressive-phrases-to-avoid-psychology-today/

        • DesertHawk

They’re not saying he’s bad… they’re saying he’s not better than any of our second pairing D-men. We have a multitude of riches. Leddy won’t move up to second pair, unless he’s better than who’s there already.

          • CozBullsFan

That wasn’t my argument. I was saying that his stats are based off his revolving partners and the lack of their minutes.

          • XMF

Which is also solid. Because the ‘Oduya sucks’ meme is on my last effing nerve.

          • 2883

new meme: XMF sucks (at deciding who sucks)

          • XMF

            Your face sucks.

          • CozBullsFan

            No you.

          • 2883

So my face is awesome then… since oyu suck at determining who/what sucks thanks XMF

          • XMF

Screw this. I’m going to go make oatmeal.

          • 2883

Does that mean Oatmeal doesn’t suck, in your opinion, which bodes very poorly for oatmeal if my analogy holds

          • XMF

You’re even ruining my oatmeal and chocolate chips now? I hope you get paper cuts all over your hands.

          • 2883

That’s a horrible hope to have..

          • XMF

You did this to yourself. I am not a meme.

          • CozBullsFan

            You meme’d yourself.

          • XMF

No, I failed to be witty. But I’ve been doing that since I was a toddler.

          • CozBullsFan

Still, you coined the XMF meme. lol

          • XMF

I was trying to avoid being marked as stupid. Which is pointless because it’s obvious to everyone, anyway.

            I don’t like this game.

          • CozBullsFan

You won the game the minute you meme’d yourself.

          • XMF

I’m going to bed. That’s where I dream of Natalie and I’m not stupid.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Now that its entered your consciousness, don’t be so sure…

          • XMF

            She’s mine.

          • CozBullsFan

Night XMF. I’ll tell Natalie you’re thinking of her.

          • XMF

You’re a filthy person. Dirty. Nasty.

But I still love you. I’ll tell Natalie you said hello.

          • CozBullsFan

            <3 In your dreams.

          • 2883

Are you both dating random girls named Natalie to satisfy your Natalie Portman addictions? If so, do they know?

          • CozBullsFan

No. Natalie is mine. XMF refuses to acknowledge this.

          • XMF

Coz is a liar. A dirty liar.

          • CozBullsFan

A dirty liar with a beautiful GF named Natalie.

          • XMF

I also called dibs on dating Natalie Imbruglia.

          • 2883

You can have her… She’s gotta be damn near 50 now

          • XMF

She’s 39, thank you very much.

          • 2883

            That young eh?

          • XMF

Halle Berry got married so I had to go with my #3.

          • CozBullsFan

All yours XMF. I call dibs on Kylie Minogue.

          • XMF

Let’s double-date. Me with Natalie Portman and you with your dreams.

          • CozBullsFan

Natalie understands my crush for Kylie. You can have anyone other than those two.

          • 2883

Just to be clear, we’re talking about Kylie Minogue right?

          • CozBullsFan

            Yes

          • 2883

Ok, you guys are nuts over late 90s early 00′s pop stars and Natalie Portman. 1/3 ain’t bad.

          • XMF

I have a stanch record of Natalie Portman love going back to last decade. This is your final warning.

          • CozBullsFan

            Not worried.

          • steeg of their own

I’ll fight you for Portman. Intelligence is sexy. (I like Emma Watson too, but she’s a little young)

          • XMF

I love her because she’s gorgeous and a serious intellectual. Pistols at noon.

          • Z-man19

you better hope it’s pistols, if it’s words, you’re dead already

          • XMF

            You go to Hell.

          • Z-man19

I’ll be right behind you, well, maybe not right behind you, but I’ll be along

          • XMF

            I’ll bring S’mores.

          • Z-man19

            I’ll bring the hot dogs

          • birdhead

ugh my emma watson situation is terrible

          • steeg of their own

I have a strong feeling our situations are similar.

          • 2883

She’s 24 and super intelligent and beautiful.

          • CozBullsFan

            You downboated me? Bastard!

          • XMF

I did NOT. And you just down boated me!

          • CozBullsFan

I did. But I didn’t downboat that comment. We have another downboater.

          • 2883

            ALL THE DOWNBOATS

          • Accipiter

            I’ll bring Lagertha Lothbrok.

          • XMF

Also, bring someone for Coz. He’ll be a bit upset to see Natalie with me.

          • CozBullsFan

Your cardboard cut out makes me laugh.

          • XMF

That’s it. I’m going to bed. You broke my heart, Fredo.

          • CozBullsFan

Don’t blame me. The heart wants what it wants.

          • 2883

            Go get the boat

          • Accipiter

            How about Taylor Swift ?

          • CozBullsFan

            Yeah, no.

          • XMF

            For the win.

          • CozBullsFan

Only if you want a song written about you.

          • 2883

For what it’s worth, I went and moisturized.. No papercuts for me

          • XMF

For that to work, you have to moisturize your hands.

          • 2883

Oh… well I may have the smoothest triceps you’d ever imagine then

          • XMF

            You don’t have any triceps!

          • 2883

Oh I do. I have monster tris. I have no biceps on the other hand

          • XMF

Well, it would be weird if you had biceps on your hands.

          • 2883

Unless i was moisturizing my biceps..

          • Accipiter

            Too many push ups ?

          • 2883

            Pushups tricep dips, skullcrushers.

          • Joe Banks

Wait, – when did chocolate chips enter the conversation?

          • neo1978

How is that so hard to comprehend?

        • birdhead

the trouble is they don’t really. they have fancy stats that demonstrate he’s doing very well in a particular usage. They don’t have stats that show he’d do badly in less sheltered minutes, because the last time he played less-sheltered minutes he did not do badly. (As measured by fancystats.)

          • 2883

Tbh any stats that say he’s good in non-sheltered minutes suffer from SSS

          • birdhead

the small sample of the entire 2011-12 season?

          • ChicagoNativeSon
          • birdhead

Hey, you agreed with me in 2011! And what you suggested came true in 11-12! And then Q changed his mind again :-/

          • ChicagoNativeSon

Heh. Yeah, Q’s usage since acquiring Oduya has me in a pickle at times, but it really speaks mostly about the lack of depth of the Hawks defense then, compared to the depth now, no?

Oduya was such a great scouting pick up. The Hawks saw a defenseman who struggled at times elsewhere, but who might flourish in their system – and got him cheap (as usual). I hope, in time, that Runblad will follow a similar path.

The only frustration I have with Leddy’s game is that he has stagnated, mostly in the offensive zone, slightly on the defensive end. We all see it (yes, I have a mouse), just no one wants to admit it.

            We like our people.

          • birdhead

If Rundblad takes Leddy’s spot and Leddy gets traded I really will lose my shit.

I am sensible to all of the arguments about depth, about how there’s no place to move him and no evidence he can handle Oduya minutes (not that there’s any evidence he can’t either), and so on and so on, but I still can’t quite handle the idea of chucking a 23 year old in order to hang on to a 32 year old. Not that I don’t agree with you 100% about Oduya.

As for stagnation. I have some sympathy. What else do you do when you’re stuck in a job with no chance of promotion?

          • ChicagoNativeSon

I disagree regarding your last paragraph. Elite athletes constantly work towards being, well, elite. It’s part of why they’re professionals and others are not. And it’s in their nature to not attempt to move up the chain, even if there exists a glass ceiling.

Plus Leddy’s minimal “promotion” would be more minutes (aside from the more obvious ones like moving up in ranking, or more money in the future, etc). There’s really no glass ceiling for Leddy.

I’m not certain of Leddy’s future here (but notice I didn’t type or imply that “Leddy sucks” like some will interpret), but I tend to believe he could be moved, if the return is worth it or his asking price too high.

If the price is right, Oduya will likely be extended for 3 more years, because even if he can’t handle the 2nd pairing down the line, he’d still be a great 3rd pairing guy. They also probably brought Runblad in for a reason, like they brought Leddy up rapidly in order to trade Campbell. They also have prospects in the system.

IMO, if Leddy can fetch a young promising forward, or a prospect and a pick, or a veteran 4C and a pick, you make that trade. It’s not as if the Hawks would give him away and not, in theory, get equal value.

          • neo1978

            Tell that to Ben Smith…

      • Andrew Heitman

He is exactly what the numbers say he is- he’s the 5th defenseman who plays with a revolving door partner. He sees time (sometimes) on the PP, he gets looks, but he’s not ready for prime time. He has his role and he serves it. In a 3rd period where the Hawks needed to put their foot on the throat- you don’t go to the development player

        • CozBullsFan

Wait, you’re saying his stats have some basis on who his partner is? You don’t say! I tried saying this before. Apparently it doesn’t matter.

        • XMF

Hjalmarsson didn’t become a top tier defenseman until last season. He sparked in 2010 and regressed in 2011. Leddy will be fine. He’s a future top pairing blue liner.

          • neo1978

So Hammer sparked in 2010 with partner Campbell
Hammer regressed in 2011 with partner Leddy.
Hammer became top tier in 2012 with partner Oduya.

So does giving weight to this partner thing work both ways?

          • VerStig

So Oduya > Campbell > Leddy?

            *runs away*

          • ChicagoNativeSon

            Or?

            Oduya > Leddy < Campbell

        • ChicagoNativeSon

“Developmental player”? After 4 years in the NHL?
Then something went wrong with his development.

          And revolving door partner? Rozsival?
          Leddy Corsi with Rozsival: 62%
          Leddy Corsi without: 54%

Admittedly, there are many ways to skin that cat, but none that I’ve seen suggest Rozsy is a revolving door.

And anyone who agrees with you about the 3rd period is not allowed to bitch when the Hawks go into the so-called prevent D.

          • Andrew Heitman

4 years, but only 2 full seasons. That first year started him at 19 years old…most kids are still in juniors…

Also, playing your top 4 exclusively is not a defensive shell. Two separate thoughts.

      • lizmcneill

Sam’s saying Leddy doesn’t suck. People on twitter were telling Tracey that he sucks (and Q benched him after the clusterfun on the goal against).
The stats show that he generally does well in a sheltered/optimized usage. The eye test shows some high risk, high reward aspects to his play, as you would expect from a young offensive dman. Capgeek shows he’s due for a new contract at the same time as ….everyone else.

        • CozBullsFan

Leddy is a good young D man. His problem is that he has been saddled with bad partners who don’t deserve minutes.

          • neo1978

Rosi is a better defenseman than Leddy. Rosi doesn’t play all the time because of age and bad knees but when he does, he is above Leddy on the depth chart. And Q has made that very plain, especially in the last years playoffs. If anyone was paying attention they would have seen that.

So Rosi is the 5th D-man on the team, Leddy is 6th and Brookbank is 7th. That is what the eye test shows. That is what the statistics and graphs show. Everything coming from the Hawks says that. It is only in the blog world where Leddy is somehow thought to be the 4th or soon to be the 4th D-man on the team.

          • CozBullsFan

I’m guessing you don’t give any weight to Leddy’s numbers in regards to his partners.

          • Bob Lanz

            Give it a rest

          • Bob Lanz

This fucking this is so true, and the lack of a consistent partner

          • neo1978

I give a lot of weight to Leddy’s numbers in relationship to his partners. And I have already explained how you can pull the two apart to see what Q is doing and why.

        • XMF

          I agreed with Sam.

    • CozBullsFan

Get out of here with your logic! According to the stats folks, he’s not good. He could easily be replaced. Who his partner is, has no bearing. It’s all on him. We should trade him while his value is high. /s

      • Andrew Heitman

        Kane for Miller?

        • CozBullsFan

          Leddy for Barker, part 2?

          • Andrew Heitman

            What could go wrong?

          • CozBullsFan

            Nothing at all.

      • ChicagoNativeSon

Oh fucking christ. Please point out these “stats folks” who claim “he’s not good”. I’ll personally shun them.

        • CozBullsFan

          Haha

    • bizarrohairhelmet

The most damning thing I recall anyone saying is that he’s not worth protecting in the off-season because his experience level is not high enough. Hard to argue against that if the situation arises. Grooming a D-man for 4 years is a great luxury to have, but not always realistic. Anybody remember Oduya before Stan picked him up? He burned some good regular season minutes but didn’t do much in the playoffs. That’s a far cry from where he is now and it only took him 7 years past Leddy’s age to get there.

      • 2883

Tbh, Oduya paid dividends nearly immediately, you gotta credit the Hawks scouting department for the Oduya pickup and re-signing. I thought it was worth the 2 seconds, and while I thought he was #overpaid, his contract has looked like one of the better bargains on the team

        • XMF

          /Campoli’d

          • 2883

            That guy.. now he sucked.

          • XMF

            No, he didn’t.

          • 2883

            Your streak continues!

          • XMF

Campoli was pretty good down the stretch.

          • 2883

This is painful and I don’t want to do this and I know your career shouldn’t be defined by one stupid play but..

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drQD4WWWVr8

          • Andrew Heitman

            Barf.

          • XMF

I hate to say it but Seabs…

      • Andrew Heitman

Honestly, there is so much to learn about this game at this level that we need to see another 2-3 years of him in the league getting his 5th man minutes. Its great that he plays with Keith because there is a role there (not entirely, I don’t think he has Keiths size) that might be similar in a few years. Or not.

        • lizmcneill

I don’t think they can afford to pay a 5th dman nearly 3M, let alone the raise he’ll probably be looking next year.

          • XMF

Conventional wisdom suggests Oduya will be moved.

          • Andrew Heitman

Truth. But who knows what the rest of the roster will look like.

          • lizmcneill

Ayup. Hopefully Bollig becomes Tradebaitig, at least. I’d rather his $$ had gone to Ben.

          • Andrew Heitman

Package him with a bag of pucks and send him to Florida with everyone else…

          • lizmcneill

Calgary or Toronto, because #grit and #hitz

    • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

And he needs to step up to 2nd pair next season, and this is TCI, so yes, we can complain, and we will.

    • Guackycom

Was Leddy really to blame for the Wild goal? I have to say I don’t see how benching him for essentially the rest of the game helps Leddy or the team — in the long term or the short term. As others have pointed out, Bollig didn’t miss a shift after his G1 brain cramp, but Q really seems to had it in for Leddy. No fair.

      • Why

Bollig missed a game after his G1 brain cramp.

        • Accipiter

          So 2-3 shifts ?

        • Guackycom

          Good point, sir!

      • Accipiter

Leddy made some bad plays throughout the game.
Saw fewer minutes after the goal, no big deal.

  • 2883

    Most boring game ever

    • Hawkeytalk

      Seriously.

  • Hawkeytalk

New Yorkers booing their team. Nice.

    • 2883

Can you blame them? 120 minutes against Playoffs Fleury and you can’t score 1 goal

      • Hawkeytalk

The few times I could be bothered to look up to watch, the rags were shin padding fleury.

    • XMF

They don’t even know they’re at a hockey game.

    • QCBlackhawk

Are you sure they’re not booing the Penguins win?

    • bizarrohairhelmet

That’s what happens when Carello shines two games in a row.

  • steeg of their own

Donut for Flower? Looks like Mr. Hyde came to play tonight.

    • bizarrohairhelmet

      The MAF enigma is alive

      • steeg of their own

I really like Flower as a person, because I’ve met him before and we ate pancakes together and he’s super nice. I really wish he was like the magical teflon goalie (against every team but the Hawks). But evaluating him qua goalie, holy crap would he ever give me heart attacks.

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

Here’s a number from AV, the offensive super genius, zero goals in the last two games. His offense is actually making MAF look good.

  • CozBullsFan

    GO KINGS!

    • 2883

I have a hard time rooting for the Kings to do anything

      • CozBullsFan

Who would you rather face? The Ducks or Kings?

        • 2883

Depends, Ducks have a great offense/4 lines but have questions in net, Kings used to have no offense but Quick in net.

I think the Hawks can score on anyone so maybe the Kings? But Quick can steal a series and he was banged up when we got him last year. I’d actually rather face the Ducks I think

          • CozBullsFan

I’d prefer the Kings. The Ducks have been better.

          • birdhead

Ducks for me. The Kings are still scary and I think they’re the better team top to bottom.

          • Z-man19

take goaltending out of the equation, I go Mallards.

          • Why

To play or avoid? You’re saying to avoid, right?

          • CozBullsFan

I don’t know. The Duck’s forwards have been playing better than the Kings. The Kings got lucky.

          • birdhead

            a) why would you take goaltending out of the equation? b) believe it or not, the Kings top 6 scares me more than the Ducks top 6 and I’m not impressed by the Ducks defense.

          • Z-man19

LA has 2 dmen hurt right now and I think the Mallards D was just as good before that happened. Mallard’s forwards could give the Hawks fits

          • lizmcneill

Regher being hurt probably improves their D tbh. Who’s the other one?

          • Z-man19

Mitchell, Regehr is top 4 in PK time for LA

          • lizmcneill

Yeah, but he’s old and slow like Zus. Mitchell is old and wily like Rozi.

          • Z-man19

Mitchell is first in PK time, losing two of your top 4 can’t be good

          • Accipiter

I don’t want the Hawks to face their power play.

          • Z-man19

            I concur

          • Hawkeytalk

Same here. Also the “been there” mentality helps to win tight games or successfully play from behind in series.

That said, the Ducks are scary too. I have given up wishing for one vs the other.

  • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

    Well, that didn’t take long.

  • 2883

    Well that escalated quickly

    • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

You win. Much better line. ;-)

    • CozBullsFan

      LOL

    • steeg of their own

Fucking hell, LA, couldn’t you even wait for the station to switch over?!?

  • Hawkeytalk

    Quack. That was fast.

  • XMF

    Haha

  • Why

Gaborik when healthy. That’s a new look for L.A.

    • CozBullsFan

That’s why they got him. Game breaker.

      • Why

I was hoping they’d get Gaborik when not healthy.

        • CozBullsFan

          It may happen.

    • XMF

I said so when they acquired him. Great move.

      • VerStig

Can’t go wrong with a Marian.

  • 2883

I saw a report that had Eddie O as one of the three the Canes want to talk to for the Canes gig. Thoughts?

    • CozBullsFan

Can’t wait for his first interaction with Pierre.

    • steeg of their own

Heard he interviewed, haven’t heard anything about finalists. Sources?

      • 2883

Maybe I misread the article.. let me go see if I can find it

        • 2883

I did, it wasn’t even as strong as interviewed. they just said that they’re interested in interviewing him, it was McKenzie.

          • steeg of their own

TBH, I know I’d be happy that Edzo got his dream if he got the job. And I know that I’ve often had issues with him as a commentator, but damn if I wouldn’t miss him if he had to go.

          • 2883

That would mean 82 games of Konroyd…

          • steeg of their own

I choose to believe they’d recruit Weideman or Murray to the television cause before they’d be cruel enough to subject us to a full season of Konroyd.

          • 2883

Wiedermann does the PBP, so I doubt you’d have two PBP guys in the booth…. I’m thinking it’d mean you’d get 82 games of Konroyd… God that makes me tired.

          • steeg of their own

Have I ever told this board my Weideman story? I don’t remember if I did, but it fostered an unholy love for the radio guys in my blood.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

Did you have pancakes with him, too?

          • steeg of their own

Hey, fuck sarcasm. I met Weideman at a morning skate when the Hawks were playing the Hurricanes (he said he comes to most morning skates?). But he was nice enough to talk to fans who were watching on the boards. There was a girl talking about how she got started on hockey, and then Weideman told a story about how when they were kids they would play on the Erie Canal once it froze over, and I’ve never forgotten that. He’s always sort of been the person that I picture whenever someone says ‘pond hockey’ since then.

          • bizarrohairhelmet

That’s cool. I do think it would be really weird and cool if you had a bunch of pancakes-with-minor-celebrities stories.

          • ahnfire

I met Weideman at the morning skate when they played NYR. He told me that he liked to get Crow’s on-ice perspective in preparation for the game. He was the nicest guy and talked to me and my friend about how he started in radio, about why he likes playing on the off-wing when he plays hockey, and about how he developed his PBP style and growing up and working as a truck driver.

He’s super interesting and the nicest guy. We kept telling him that we wished the radio & tv synced better because we preferred his broadcasts. He was diplomatic about that, talking about how broadcasting for TV and radio are difference since he has to do more to paint a picture than the TV guys do.

          • QCBlackhawk

My 720 Duo can’t split. I loves them so much

          • Hawkeytalk

            Omg this in spades.

          • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

I kind of like Konroyd. Of course, I’ve been out of the Chicago market area for a few years, so my memory may be fuzzy.

          • steeg of their own

He’s… inoffensive? I guess? That might be the nicest I can go. He really seems out of touch, despite covering the team closely. It’s off-putting.

          • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

            Maybe that’s what I mis-remembering. He didn’t piss me off. :-)

          • DesertHawk

He actively and knowingly Jinxes Crow’s shutouts. He’s a toolbag and a giant asshole and I hate him.

          • XMF

            No, that’s Accipiter.

          • Accipiter

            The truth comes out.
            I still love you.

          • Z-man19

            asshole

          • 2883

Don’t mince words, tell me how you feel

          • XMF

Accipiter jinxes the shutouts. But he’s not a toolbag or a giant a-hole.

          • DesertHawk

He’s just some crazy on the internet :P

          • XMF

With some seriously disturbing wizard powers over goaltenders.

    • birdhead

as a part-time Canes fan: *weeps*

      • 2883

Hey, keep your chin up, at least the Canes sticks would always be on the ice.

        • birdhead

that would be an improvement for Skinner and Semin, lol.

          • 2883

Ha, Skinner had a great year in 2013-14… a bounceback year even

          • birdhead

oh yeah, he totally did, and I actually like Semin a lot, but you can’t take hooking, slashing and high-sticking penalties with your stick on the ice …

          • 2883

He’d lazy his way into other penalties. (Semin not Skinner)

      • lizmcneill

But if the Hawks’ record is the inverse of the Canes…..things look bright in Chicago!

        • birdhead

THAT JINX WILL BE BROKEN NEXT SEASON.

    • Joe Banks

      Bye, eddie.

  • 2883

And that’s why I don’t want to face the Kings

    • XMF

Facing a hot team with scoring and a goaltender that’s won six in a row? Scary.

      Wait.

      • 2883

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?

        • XMF

          Hossa always wins rock-paper-Gods.

          • steeg of their own

            WIN

    • steeg of their own

You have to admit: us vs. Kings will be one hell of a hockey series to watch, though. As a fan of playoff hockey, I’m tentatively enthused.

      • 2883

As a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks, the thought makes me want to drink

        • Z-man19

and what thoughts don’t make you want to drink?

          • 2883

Puppies… Thinking of puppies doesn’t make me want to drink

        • steeg of their own

Well duh, yeah. But as a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks, the thought of a lot of playoff series make me want to drink. I’m not sure that the Kings are any worse than some generic other team.

          • 2883

That’s the problem in the West, there was no such thing as “Some generic other team” unless you mean the Stars and they’re eliminated already. The Ducks Kings Hawks and Wild are among the best in the NHL and you could make an argument that the Wild are the worst of those 4..

          • Why

The Wild are among the best in the NHL?

          • XMF

            For me to poop on.

          • 2883

Trying to avoid the jinx rather than give an honest appraisal

          • Why

Fair enough. I support insanity at playoff time. I hope the Hawks manage to beat the team that is arguably the worst team remaining in the West.

          • 2883

I haven’t changed my gameday outfit since Game 3 of the Hawks/Blues series…. Any of it…

          • Bob Lanz

            Me neither

          • birdhead

” you could make an argument that the Wild are the worst of those 4..”

I’m tempted to say that that’s an accepted fact rather than debatable. But #PDucksO

      • birdhead

I liked playing them after they got beat up by the Sharks :-/ I don’t want us to be the team they beat up :-/

Classy duck face, or duck feets?

          • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

Duck feet. They’re kind of epaulet shaped, so it makes sense on the shoulder. Plus, it just looks goofy enough to be a nice touch.

          • Guest

Yeah, it’s like Yeti feet, except they won’t beat your wife.

          • Guest

          • QCBlackhawk

One thing that doesn’t really carry over in the layout is the inseam colors on the white jerseys, when players are in action it kind of shows up like the feathers on a mallard, it’s actually kind of cool

      • Paul the Fossil

NM, I found it. Sweet! I think I just had an idea for a unique bday present for someone.

        • QCBlackhawk

Quad City Mallards. The QC in my name

          • CozBullsFan

I spent many weekends in the QC. It was the closest thing to a night life I had in HS. That is, until I started dating a girl from Hinsdale Central. Spending my weekends in Chicago was so much better.

          • QCBlackhawk

Not the best night life around here as far as bars. Buncha meatheads and wannabe thugs. Midwest life is super tuff, yo.

          • CozBullsFan

I know all about the night life in the QC. I spent a lot of time at an underage club in Davenport in high school. Got tired of that and spent a lot of time at some clubs in the burbs of Chicago.

          • CozBullsFan

          • Arctic Ice

Kidding. Thought you were a house music fan?

          • CozBullsFan

I am in deed a huge house music fan.

          • Arctic Ice

Same, since the late 80′s. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo today?

          • CozBullsFan

Cinco de Mayo isn’t big where I live. We have so much going on this month that it takes a back seat. We have the Cedral celebration. It was the first Catholic mass in Mexico. Besides that, we have day of the student, day of the teacher, and day of the worker. Basically, the locals have the entire month off for vacation.

          • Arctic Ice

            No shit! That’s a lot of day of’s ….

          • CozBullsFan

Ok, so I finally remembered the name of the club I used to go to in high school. The Factory. Wow. Great memories.

    • Hawkeytalk

The worst. Bad logo, bad colors, bad design. Nothing redeeming at all, including inhabited by Corey perry.

      • Z-man19

is there a uni that would make Perry look good?

      • zacked

I like the orange (though not as much as the eggplant), but black sweaters just mean you didn’t even try.

        • Why

I was wondering where that Kane is lazy bullshit came from. I think I finally understand.

There’s supposed to be a picture of Kane in a black sweater here. You know what, this joke isn’t worth it.

        • VerStig

Yeah, Sharks fans are blaming their early exit this year on the lack of teal.

  • Bruno_the_Blackhawk_Cat

OT: Another no decision for Samardzija. He pitched 9 innings with 1 run, but none earned. Just went to the bottom of the 10th tied 1-1. I’m still campaigning for him for Beard of the Day, but it looks like it’ll be another week.

    • 2883

I think he’s too partisan, remember we are all Hawks fans but we are all not Cubs fans (or Sox fans)

    • CozBullsFan

He’s pitching lights out. Sucks he can’t get any run support.

  • steeg of their own

Why do Western Conference games have to be so damn late? And so much better than the Eastern Conference games? Why does the NHL conspire to keep me sleepless?

    • Accipiter

      Something to do with timezones.

    • zacked

Cause those Kalifornians get real uppity when you suggest their games should start at 4pm.

      • DesertHawk

Missing the start of the game cause I’m at work sucks…I can choose to miss out on sleep to watch a game, I can’t choose to miss out on work.

        • steeg of their own

I watched OTs in first round (probably shouldn’t have, but did), and then spent the days zombie-fied because of lack of sleep. I really can’t afford to go too late this round, and I really don’t want to be torn between sleep and watching the end of games. :/

          • DesertHawk

I feel your pain, but when your country spans four time zones(continentally)… it pretty much just blows chunks for the folks on the ends.

          • VerStig

Are there any KHL teams in the Russian Far East? I imagine that’d be a much, much bigger time zone spread than here.

          • DesertHawk

Imagine Hawaiian/Alaskan NHL fans… Or the ones in New Zealand(google is telling me I’m spelling Zealand wrong…), Malaysia, or England/Ireland.

          • Arctic Ice

I don’t need to imagine. East coast games are in 1st intermission by the time I’m home from work.

          • DesertHawk

That’s how it is for me in Arizona.

          • VerStig

Oh yeah you guys have that funny time zone thing right?

          • DesertHawk

If by funny you mean, we just don’t change our time… yeah. It’s Mountain Standard Time, so when everyone jumps forward Pacific Daylight matches up with us.

          • VerStig

And because they made it longer, we actually spend more days per year in DST than we do in “standard” time.

          • DesertHawk

Yeah. Meanwhile I’m just puttering along not worried about changing my clocks. It’s pretty nice actually.

          • birdhead

The KHL timezones are really incredible. I think there was a bit in a piece Katie Baker did about Kovalchuk or maybe about Ovie during the lockout? But anyway a quick google tells me that there’s a team as far west as Prague and as far east as Vladivostok: http://www.sportmapworld.com/map/ice-hockey/russia/khl/ they must do something with conferences around travel time but even so, just stunning.

      • steeg of their own

I’d just like it if the two Central teams (the Hawks and the Wild) could start around 7pm. They’re both Central teams, it shouldn’t be difficult to get their viewers (and the lucrative east coast viewers) to bed by midnight, should it?

        • zacked

That’s cause they want both games on NBCSN, so if you start the east game at 7, you can’t start the west game any earlier than 9:30.

As an EST resident, I haaaaaaate it.

EDIT: Just noticed that tomorrow’s games are on different channels. So throw that right out. Start the damn game at 8 you jerkholes.

          • steeg of their own

            Ditto.

        • 2883

Should start at 7C 8E. :) But it can’t because that would conflict with the 7E/6C game that they’re up against #EastCoastBias

  • Z-man19

    Uh-oh, Doughty just went down

  • 2883

Doughty hurt… Kings down to 1 of their top 4

    • QCBlackhawk

Hit to the back of the knee, apparently?

      • 2883

        Slash

      • Z-man19

        Yes

    • Jimnhlnut

      Was Willie M top 4?

      • 2883

Probably not, Muzzin and Voynov are right? I dont’ know enough about the Kings

        • Jimnhlnut

I’m not sure either, Willie likely a very capable 4 or 5 D-man. Still a loss when compounded with Reghner and Doughty, who was rumored to have a nagging upper body injury last series. Hawks may need any advantage they can get if they face Sutter in ROund 3. Quick red hot and they have some GOOD play-off performing forwards.

          • 2883

Gaborik getting hot is scary, he’s dangerous and is instant O…

          • Accipiter

It’s partly Kopitar being on a bit of a tear.

          • Jimnhlnut

Yes, he is threading the needle with some unreal passes.

      • Accipiter

He was at one point in time.

    • CozBullsFan

That’s not good for the Kings. They were already short on D before that.

      • 2883

He’s back. tbh, the “hit” wasn’t that bad

        • CozBullsFan

Second time around, it didn’t. Still, the Kings can’t afford to lose another D man.

  • 2883

Doughty makes it back the bench, probably just rubbed some dirt on it

    • QCBlackhawk

      Just went numb, I guess.

      • 2883

It didn’t look athat bad.. I mean Iwouldn’t want someone hitting me but in the grand scheme of things…

  • Jimnhlnut

Am I seeing more and more “ref mistake faceoffs” at center ice than ever before? Should I be happy that the refs collaborate, make a group decision, and “get it right,” or should I be upset that more and more calls are being missed and need to be “corrected?”

  • 2883

I have been noticing Lindholm in all the right ways in htis period

  • 2883

Also Matt Beleskey is Brandon Bollig

    • Z-man19

      That was pretty bad

      • 2883

Even Andrew Shaw thought that was bad

  • VerStig

For those of you who remember Days of Our Defense… reading today’s thread felt like like Days of Our Commentariat

Thanks for the (many) laughs, you crazies.

Eddie Olczyk and Doc Emrick to commentate NHL 15

    http://nooooooooooooooo.com/

    • Z-man19

Just be glad Pierre isn’t involved

      • Jimnhlnut

He is on the adult version giving Eddie O a reach around.

        • QCBlackhawk

          “Isn’t that right, Eddie!?”

          • DesertHawk

            ACHIEVEMENT: Isn’t that right, Eddie?

Hit Pierre McGuire with a puck while he’s in between the benches.

    • DesertHawk

It’ll be better than that thousand year old dialogue that’s currently in the game…

  • Paul the Fossil

Say guess who currently leads the entire NHL playoffs, regardless of position, in points per game (P/G)?

[Okay yea I know it's not actually a meaningful sample and it certainly won't continue, but I couldn't resist. Besides it's been more than 24 hours since I was asked why I come here...a guy gets lonely.]

So no one told you life was gonna be this wayyyy

      • Michael Scott

        Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s D O AAAAAA

  • Waylon

so Pang made a good point on the TSN intermission, mentioned that while the Ducks are targeting Doughty because he may be hurt and they’re down on D – Men, they’re just aping Sutter’s MO for years.

    • QCBlackhawk

Yeah, it was definitely a fair jab. It’s why I don’t like the idea of playing them if we move on. Clean contest wins any day for me

  • Jimnhlnut

Which teams are really zoned in and playing play-off hockey right now? I vote fro LA Kings. Pens have back to back shutouts, so that must be considered, but Rangers tired and weak with a PP even worse than the Hawks was. Bruins not playing full 60 minute games. Ducks G-tender issues though these goals tonight not Hiller’s fault, but if down 2-0 who will BB play game 3? Hawks have won six in a row, but have they been playing their best yet?

Yeah it’s been doing that for at least 2 days now… for me at least.

      • Arctic Ice

        Same here.

    • steeg of their own

Perhaps these just aren’t the comments you’re looking for, and Disqus is having an internal debate about how to handle that.

  • CozBullsFan

    Just Disqus being Disqus.

  • ChicagoNativeSon

Since Verstig mentioned it below. And for the memories of a time when these two were good enough to be the number one pairing… ah, the Halcyon days…

    .
    They’re on a horse. Backwards.

  • Waylon

So Kings playing with house money now, but I’d like to see this series go at least six, no matter who wins.

  • QCBlackhawk

Anyone else find their center ice with the huge 25 and lack of logo kind of fuggo?

  • VerStig

    Stick SMASH

    • QCBlackhawk

Yeah, saw that and laughed. Then they cut to Selanne, and I had a sad

      • birdhead

OH GOD I HATE PICTURES OF SAD PLAYERS. angry stick-smashers are OK to laugh at but the footage of e.g. Sad Joe Thornton after the Sharks elimination sucked.

    • CozBullsFan

      That was juvenile.

      • VerStig

        Me or Perry?

        • CozBullsFan

          Perry of course.

          • VerStig

            Just checking :)

Not that I’m not always juvenille, of course

          • CozBullsFan

Perry did the same thing last season facing the Hawks. He acted like a petulant child.

          • VerStig

The worst (best?) that I can remember the past couple years was Steve Mason after we beat him in a shootout

          • CozBullsFan

The Ducks meltdown was so much better. Both Perry and Getzlaf has meltdowns when the game ended. Smashing sticks and acting like 2 year olds.

          • Bob Lanz

            I can relate

          • Accipiter

Getzlaf has an excuse, he has lost a lot of hair.

          • http://www.our-founding.com/ Toews makes funny faces (TMFF)

So they were acting their age?

          • birdhead

Mike Smith had a beautiful one vs the Hawks last season.

            http://theoddmanrush.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/MikeSmithFreakout1.gif

      • QCBlackhawk

Spur of the moment frustration with essentially the nail in the coffin? Can’t say I wouldn’t be upset too. Better the post than something alive.

  • Bob Lanz

Well thoughts on what we learned tonight?
    Rags have no offence
Pitt is waiting for Outcome of Montreal Boston
    Ducks ? Done?
Kings tough team to score on only scores a couple goals

    • Jimnhlnut

Hawks’ hockey beats all these teams. Can the Hawks play Hawks’ hockey?

    • Accipiter

      What we leaned tonight.
You mean from your comment ?

      • ChicagoNativeSon

        Heh.

  • Jimnhlnut

Would be cool if Kings and Hawks faced off with matching 8 game win streaks.

  • cliffkoroll

Very good discussion on Leddy below. I seem to recall last season, Oduya was going through a rough patch, and Q swapped him and Leddy. As it turned out, the Swedish hobo used the bumslayer minutes to get his game back and was moved back up at crunch time. I thought it was like a 10-game stretch or something. And that Leddy didn’t really seize the bull by the horns. Yeah, I’m remembering now. Leddy had been racking up great numbers on the third pairing but kind of fizzled in the top-4. Anyone? Bueller?

I still like the kid, and it’s a helluva tough top-4 to crack, and Q’s trust level has slipped a bit. Regardless of past usage though, you’d think he’ll get another shot next year.

  • laaarmer

    Yeah, Leddy.

    • The Other One

Leddy had a great game 1 (that stop on Parise was pretty-much amazing) – I didn’t see any major errors in game 2 either, but I’m not Q…

      • laaarmer

He’s the new whipping boy because Seabrook doesn’t suck (not that he ever did). Crawford is not sucking either, Saad scored. Bickell is scoring. Shaw is hurt so cant take a penalty. You have to pick on somebody, so the young Leddy it is. Why can’t he play 2nd minutes? Same reason Bollig is in the lineup. Q is the coach and he thinks somebody else is better. Hard to argue with him right now.
        I like Leddy.

        • The Other One

Agree with everything you’re saying – Q seems to be pushing all the right buttons. If this is “bad” for Leddy, the Hawks have (still) an embarrassment of riches on their hands. Knock on wood
