NHL: Colorado Avalanche at Chicago Blackhawks

20 20 20 24 Games In A Row…..: Avs 2 – Hawks 3

In tonight’s Indian, as I listed the things that were not totally up to snuff through the first half of the season, I wondered if it was going to matter if it all. Maybe the Hawks had just fallen down the rabbit hole, and logic and reason and anything that made sense was simply not going to make a difference any more.

Well, here’s tonight for you. Phil Collins would probably tell you there’s something in the air.

Is it a hockey magic moment? Obviously no one will know until the baubles are handed out. But should they go to the hands we want them to, you’d certainly look back on this one and label it that.

Ok, let’s get what you’re all dying to know out of the way. No, I’m not going to “eat crow” about Gorilla Salad. Though I’m guessing crow goes quite well with such a dish. One well-timed goal does not suddenly make Carcillo an important, or even useful, player.

What I will say is that with the Hawks down to eight forwards, and Gorilla Salad having to take a regular shift, he did all the things he’s fooled Q into thinking he does all the time. He worked hard on the forecheck, he kept cycles going, he got to the net. That’s what he did for the goal. If he did that consistently on the 4th line and threw in a clean hit every so often, I wouldn’t complain. But he doesn’t.

The real making of that goal in Marcus Kruger outworking two Avs below the goal line and then finding Stalberg’s tape.

I will also add that on a night where you lose two of your top six, your 3rd line center, and your 4th line dynamo is also absent, and you get a game-wining goal from that mess….well, I don’t think I’ll say it. But you know what I’m saying.

-Let’s get the other major issue out of the way. I’m going to speculate that because Hossa took the warmup but didn’t make the bell, he’s dealing with something more nagging than serious, and will probably be back in no more than a game or two.

Patrick Sharp on the other hand, that looked back. When a player is bent over like that it’s either shoulder or wrist (shoulder also meaning clavicle). I’m going to prepare myself for six weeks on the shelf. Because it could be worse.

While this will send everyone on a “Get Iggy!” train of panic, there’s no need. What should happen is Ben Smith is brought up to skate on the 4th line with Frolik sliding up. Or Stalberg sliding up.  You could put Hayes up there and tell him to get to the net for Kane to find him. Or, if you wanted to get real creative, because Jeremy Morin has the most similar game and plays the left side, you could plug him in there. He won’t be Patrick Sharp, but he can get you out of some games.

What will happen? Carcillo will skate on that line and Bollig, Mayers, and probably Montador will rotate skating as the 12th forward.

None of the options are Patrick Sharp, no matter how he hasn’t been all that Sharp-like this year. But the Hawks can survive.

-Michal Rozsival did not have a good night, as he clearly struggled with the speed of the Avs. But the positive thing is that the only teams who are as fast as the Avs up and down the lineup are the Oilers, Hawks, and maybe Canucks. Only one of those teams is one you have to worry about seeing when the games truly matter.

-Both teams coverage in their slot was exemplary. The Hawks have been that way all year. The Avs most definitely have not. But there was little room in front.

-On Toews’s shorty, I know Jamie McGinn had lost his stick and is a forward. But when he sees Tazer up against another forward in Ryan O’Reilly, maybe you just tackle him instead of blocking out Bolland in front and deal with the loss of a power play instead of a game-changing goal. This is also not the first time the Avs have struggled with forwards on the point on a power play, because they don’t have a real QB.

-I’m not sure the goal would have been that important if Ray Emery hadn’t been….well, Ray Emery on the two Avs goals. He did make some big saves to be sure, and the first Avs goal was a neat passing play between ROR, Mitchell, and Kobasew. But you saw how much Emery struggled to get from near post to far and back to near, giving Mitchell plenty to aim for.

On the second, Seabrook had played that rush well. He’s blocked the shot off the drop pass, and forced Duchene wide. But Emery didn’t get over to his post quickly, and Duchene got it there quickly and cleverly.

I’m not saying this is the Emery bubble bursting. But he was shaky against Columbus, and these two tonight. Just keep your eyes peeled, is all I’m saying.

-Viktor Stalberg attempted nine shots, getting five on net, including the one that set up the winner. One of the Hawks best wingers for the past few games. The other is Bickell.

-Oduya’s confidence on the puck in his own zone under pressure is bordering on Billy Idol cocky.

-I want a Gabriel Landeskog. Sadly, I’ll never get one.

-Another game where Nick Leddy was really pushing. He had the one rush that you’ll recall, but there were others. He should really do that more on the PP. He’s understandably been deferring to The Good Time Boys. But being a real QB is calling your own number sometimes, and he can be a one man entry.

20 20 20 24 games in a row…I feel like I’m already sedated.

  • AMR

The good thing about emery is doesn’t have to be called upon to be a number one goalie he just needs to spell crow from time to time

  • 10thMountainFire

God damn it, bring up Jeremy Morin! (Daily requirement executed…)

    Or I go with Smith.

I must be the only person in the CI world that doesn’t get the Jimmy Hayes thing. It might be his lack of production on the scorer’s sheet but… he’s big. That’s half the battle. Troy Brouwer comes to mind but I may be way off. I like the idea of Morin coming to town and pushing up an established player like Fro (though I hesitate a bit just simply due to Fro’s productive value at his present slot).

I agree on Razor. He’s looked like his orbit is spiraling a bit closer to earth; but if Crow remains healthy Razor is back to his old role: really, really dependable back-up.

    • AMR

Actually lately he has been tearing it up in the AHL playing as a center. Whether it translates to the NHL is the question

      • AMR

In 55 games he has 19 goals and 15 assists for 34 points

        • Z-man19

          you’re speaking of Hayes?

          • AMR

Yes I realize i should’ve made that clear

          • Accipiter

            Zed’s a bit thick.

          • AMR

            Nonetheless

          • Z-man19

            it’s SLOW dumbass

          • High and Wide

            learn to accept a compliment

          • Z-man19

            I said thank you

        • birdhead

didn’t he have a really long, really unproductive streak at the beginning of the year, too? After they first switched him to center.

    • Glaze

Hayes or Morin slot in best on the 2nd. I wouldn’t play with the lines, why break up what appears to be working well.

  • robondacob

I say bring up Ben Smith for some good ol’ bumslaying and give Stalberg a shot at the top 6. I think he’s ready for it.

  • mad-hatter

    Eyes peeled you say?

  • Glaze

Assuming Shaw is good to go, I wouldn’t break up the chemistry that’s flowing on the 3rd line. Slot Morin or Hayes into Sharps spot, keep the 1st and 4th lines the same (as in Gorilla Salad on the 4th).

    • Z-man19

I don’t think it matters who plays with who anymore. Bicks and Stals are just kicking ass and taking names with whoever is with them.

      • Glaze

Chemistry has alot to do with things though, if it aint broke, don’t fix it. I’d rather see Morin/Hayes on the second line than watch the bumslaying juggernaut that has been the 3rd line go to shit because of plug and playing people all over the lineup. Just MHO.

        • Z-man19

I’m just saying that the lines have gotten so jumbled up lately and it doesn’t seem to slow them down much. Hell, put MC, Stals and Bicks on a line, let em go fuck shit up.

  • Z-man19

So if Sharp, Shaw and Hossa are out for Friday, either the Hawks play Mayers and two D at forward or someone has to go on IR right?

    • Accipiter

      Montador will save us.

      • Z-man19

or get brown brain again, New Jersey anyone?

        • Glaze

Monty’s gone the route of Johnnson. Obviously, he’s dead, or cryogenically frozen for use later on down the road when Q wants to slot him into a forward spot on the power play for reasons unbeknownst to the rest of us.

          • Z-man19

you realize he is on the active roster right? He was a healthy scratch tonight

          • Glaze

Yes, that post was with a healthy dose of sarcasm since we have not seen him for long periods of time.

          • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

            who?

          • Accipiter

Knowing his luck that healthy scratch will turn into something life threatening.

          • amontesawesome

The healthy scratch will become infected.

          • Z-man19

this is going no where good

        • Joe Banks

I remember someone deliberately gave him a shot to the head. Don’t remember who.

    • robondacob

at this rate, we’re going to have an all-defensemen fourth line. if only we still had John Scot…

      • Accipiter

        He was versatile.

        • Sparky_The_Barbarian

          and consistent

  • pompoon

    “I want a Gabriel Landeskog”

    Don’t we all…

    • Accipiter

      I want a Natalie Portman.

      • 10thMountainFire

You keep your goddamned dirty fucking hands off of that woman!

        • Accipiter

I knew I could get you out of hiding.

          • 10thMountainFire

That was dirty. It was wrong. You tricked me.

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Does this explain the oft bragged about lack of pants?

      • Joe Banks

        THOR?

    • High and Wide

I don’t know, he’s a good 15-20% better-looking than any human really needs to be

      • High and Wide

it’s the sheer inefficiency that unnerves me and not feelings of unworthiness, I swear

  • High and Wide

Landeskog is as legit as they come, and I think he’ll grow into a hell of a captain.
Don’t look forward to seeing him feed some of the Hawks’ current core their lunch when time isn’t on their side anymore.

    • puppetmasterp

Yeah, but before that, it’ll be fun watching him square off against us.

    • Glaze

It’ll be interesting what he and Duchene get next year for contracts, Avs are going to pay an arm and a leg to attempt to keep them due to giving O’Reilly his contract.

  • putmeinthemadhouse

hi folks, anyone still up..ive asked for this before but I’m looking for a particular blog analysis of a bolland trolling play where he clips the skates of a pred defensement in the slot which leads to a scoring chance/goal…anyone help me?

  • ExOnMS

Hell of a game from Brandon Seabrook.

    • ExOnMS
    • ChiBlackhawks

Especially considering how most of us felt he was invisible to start the year. Like. C’mon, Brandon. It’s like you don’t even exist!

    • Joe Banks

On CSN this morning, they posted Emery had a 2.20 GAA – 220, 240, whatever it takes…(it’s 2.02)

  • 2883

To me Sharp’s injury looked more shoulder or arm than wrist, but it could be the wrist… Here’s a close up of the hit..

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ScfIMRXxouA#t=52s

  • ArlingtonRob

You may not get a Landeskog, but you will soon find a Teravainen.

    • Joe Banks

Oooo Santa! Can I have a Teravainen? Can I? Huh?

    • zacked

If “soon” means 2 – 4 years from now.

  • BigCSouthside

Here’s a list of shit I’d never thought I’d say or feel this year:
    “Ray Emery, franchise record holder”
“Man, Bickell might be the best forward tonight”
“Dish it to Stalberg!” As Sharp is carrying the puck
“Oh Christ I hope Oduya is ok” after edzo says he was shaken up on that play
    “Daniel Carcillo: Hero”
“Nick leddy may be one of the top d men in the league”
    “Really liking Q’s line choices”
    “That powerplay was fucking sweet”

    • 10thMountainFire

Yeah… but how about this crowd?

      • Accipiter

Always gotta make it about you.

        • Z-man19

          he is special

    • ChiBlackhawks

“Dish it to Stalberg!” As Sharp is carrying the puck

      – thought the exact same thing. Sharp’s way snakebit; hopefully when he comes back it’s a different story. Last night was just tragic.

    • Sparky_The_Barbarian

      “Really Liking Q’s Line Choices”

Including Carbomb on the first line and Winger Sheldon Brookbank?

  • http://www.facebook.com/hair.helmet Hair Helmet

    20 20 24….just saying…

  • mightymikeD

    bootiful

  • mightymikeD

One of the dumber things I was picking up on the Twittargh last night was Eastern fans suggesting that the Hawks were only streaking because they hadn’t come up against the Penguins, Bruins et al.. ignoring the fact that the Hawks have 13 points more than the Habs and went 12-3-3 against the East last year.

    • Accipiter

Also, you can add CBJ’s point total to any of our division rivals’ point total and we still have more points, try it, it’s fun.

      • mightymikeD

oh gawd.. it’s true! HOLY SHIT HOW ARE THE HAWKS NEARLY 20 POINTS CLEAR OF DETROIT!!!

        • Accipiter

They have a game at hand.

          • mightymikeD

            oh, I know.. but still…

          • Accipiter

That was a reply (my reply) you might expect from one of the eastern teams’ fans.

    • Country_Bumpkin

They need to get their heads out of their collective ass. Looking forward to the SCF when the Hawks destroy (insert douchey team from the Eastern Conf.)

    • birdhead

Unlike the Eastern Conference, the Western Conference is familiar with the term “defense”, so I feel like the Hawks would match up pretty well against most of those guys. Maybe not the Bruins.

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Emery was exactly as advertised, brilliant at times, and prone to giving up 1 softie per game. Good enough for the win.

At first and second glances, I thought Bolly had gotten away with a slash or a hook. In hindsight (five replays later) looks like both players were tracking the play, oblivious to each other, and the swords crossed only in the head of action.

Amen to everything you said about Leddy. Also to everything you said about Oduya could be applied to the team. There is a thin line between confidence and arrogance, and at times, this team gets very close to that line. We call it playing too cute, or too fancy, or too much passing…. Hockey 101, amended for our speed, will take us far.

    • Accipiter

      Bolly has you fooled too.

      • Flavius

He’s a sneaky bastard…with a sixth sense about when the refs aren’t looking…and a seventh sense about what he can get away with when they are.

    • zacked

Bolland doesn’t do anything by accident. Sneaky bastard is right.

    • FattyBeef

I thought Emery really struggled at moments but found ways to make saves some how. Really impressive and it makes me want to root for the guy but Crawford makes me feel much better about things back there.

      • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Both our Goaltenders have bennefited from good team D in front of them, especially D men and Forwards clearing ridiculous rebounds out of harm’s way.

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

Bolland is a sneaky fuck, and I love it. He is the very definition of a player that you love if he’s on your team and hate if he’s on any other team. I know that’s said about a lot of players, usually ones that have a tendency to play dirty and/or injure opponents even though in reality 2/3 of their own fan base hates them too (*cough* Gorilla Salad *cough*), but I don’t think that there is a single player in the league currently whom that describes more accurately than Bolland.

  • zacked

Last week, I picked this game as the streak-ender. It was the end of a 5-in-7 and a 3-in-4 stretch, it was against a struggling team, and it was the halfway mark in the season (why is no one describing it like this? It’s half the season and they haven’t properly lost yet.) I’m quite happy to have been wrong.

I’m not saying this is the Emery bubble bursting. But he was shaky against Columbus, and these two tonight. Just keep your eyes peeled, is
    all I’m saying.

Ok, then I will. I want a plan C in net. Emery has been INSANELY LUCKY to not have a save percentage in the .800′s. How many wide open looks have opposing teams miraculously shot wide with emery shuffling across? It’s like 2 a game. You can see that he can’t move from left-to-right properly, he can’t extend his split well in that direction so he hays to shuffle instead of pushing off.

The other thing I wanted to mention, this is why you don’t carry all 4 of Mayers, Bollig, Carcillo and Brookbank at the same time. Two of the three would be ok, one would be better. There’s no one that can actually play to fill in when there is an injury, which is important in hockey where there’s no back-ups. They’ve taken care of Bollig, will they move Brookbank? He’s got another whole year on a one-way.

    • chichicagochi

Emery pitches a .909 and everyone wonders if the bubble is bursting. 2 days earlier Cocraw pitches an .870 NBD.

      • zacked

It’s not about results, it’s about process. I’m a big stats guy and this is an example of a stat being misused. What I said above is that he was lucky to have that .909. Whereas Crawford was unlucky to get that .870. Obviously, Crawford is not a .940 true talent goalie, so I expect that to come down, and I expect Emery’s .925 to come way down.

I’m not a professional scout, so everyone is free to disregard my opinion, of course.

        • chichicagochi

          Stats are about results…

  • FattyBeef

Rozsival can’t skate good buuuuuuuuuut he is pretty crafty and makes good decisions with the puck most of the time. Better than most third liners.

Nice jamming goal at the end but I still cannot fucking stand Carcillo.

  • CornelisonsFlagPointer

It does feel good to know that the Blackhawks have viable options in the system to keep the ball rolling while our top guys get better. When even the booyas on morning sportstalk mention the depth at Rockford, it must be real. I get my important hockey news right here, so it’s good to see some healthy debate amongst you about which guys to bring up.
Winning that game with Hossa, Sharp and Shaw out at the end made it even more special, and must have the rest of the NHL rubbing their talismans this morning. Feels good!

  • Sparky_The_Barbarian

Posted this on the forum for snorts and giggles.

The Glass is Half Full / Half Empty: Chicago Blackhawks 2013
    Top Ten List

Here we stand at the halfway point of a marvelous season,
but we wouldn’t be Chicago sports fans if we were ever comfortable with a lead, ever able to enjoy a silver lining without looking for the dark cloud that lurks beneath. Years, decades, and in some cases centuries of frustration have taught us that the glass is never completely full, so with tongue planted firmly in cheek, here goes….

    10. Q has shown his genius by putting the Swedish line together / and by putting Carcillo on the top line and Bollig on any line.

    9. We’ve avoided any serious injuries / oh, wait…

    8. We keep finding ways to win in the final minute against teams like Detroit / and against teams like Calgary and Colorado.

    7. Thirteen different players have a Game Winning Goal / so we’re having to rely on guys like Dan Carcillo to score game winners, now?

    6. Six words: Nick Leddy on the left side, a move that has reaped huge benefits / and three more words: Winger Sheldon Brookbank.

    5. The only teams remotely close to us in the Western Conference standings are Anaheim and Vancouver / who beat us in a shootout.

    4. We have a great record in one goal games / and far too many one goal games for a team unbeaten in regulation in 24 games.

    3. We’re off to the best start in NHL history / and as any Cubs fan will tell you, it’s all about how you start.

    2. This team still hasn’t played its best hockey / This team STILL hasn’t played its best hockey.

    1. The Hawks are in great shape to take the President’s Cup / and for seven of its last eight winners, the President’s Cup has been a great consolation prize.

  • Bwah!!!

Can we go back to calling them, the ‘Lanche? I’m just sayin…
