  • SuperHawk27

I bet the fact that Hawks fans travel so well helps a lot. I cant count the amount of times I’ve heard loud ‘Lets Go Hawks’ chants at away games. I’m sure Detroit now being in the east helps their fans travel well too.

  • Sparky_The_Bard-barian

5 reasons why Sharpie should be on Team Canada, and not one of them is, ‘He’s so dreamy!’

I’m with you all the way on Canada invented hockey. Let’s say it a lot and really loud to piss the Russians off.

    • 10thMountainFire

You don’t need to say anything to piss the Russians off. Just be Canada. That will piss them off.

  • Bullitt315

“Why Sharp should make team Canada” should just be a Gif of him picking Duchene’s pocket from behind

    • 10thMountainFire

Someone with the technical expertise, please make this happen.

      • SuperHawk27

        2nd’d

      • Bullitt315
        • 10thMountainFire

I could watch that all day. And I probably will now.

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

I love how Erik Johnson so fully commits to taking away the pass to Hossa that he completely turns his back to Toews and follows Hossa past the net, opening up the entire lane for the Captain. I would really like to thank the Blues for making that happen…

          • 10thMountainFire

I think Giguere noticed the same thing. He wasn’t anticipating Toews being able to skate by to the short side like that.

          • Bullitt315

It looked like he got caught on the wrong side of Hossa but his not stopping at the net once the passing lane was gone was pretty stupid. Pretty sure Edzo pointed it out during the broadcast.

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

I was actually at that game, didn’t hear Edzo pointing that out…

          • Bullitt315

Wasn’t trying to be condescending. I know a lot of people don’t watch the local broadcast and/or go to the games. I just thought I remembered him saying something and thought it was relevant.

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

Didn’t think you were being condescending, just explaining why I didn’t hear that

  • ChicagoNativeSon

Ugh. This weather. Where can a guy find some hockey action? I’m going crazy out there at the lake.

  • Bobby Otter

Am I reading this right? Kruger made team Sweden?

    • Bobby Otter

So Kane, Handzus, Hossa, Odyua, Hjalmarsson, Kruger, Rozsíval, Toews and Keith. Then probably Sharp and maybe Seabrook and Saad the first off the bench for the US? Nine locks, Sharp, a maybe and a replacement… brings us to 12. Probably 10 going… that’s nuts.

      • Paul the Fossil

Seabs is from BC, and he didn’t make the Canada team. Sharp did.

So pending any injury replacements it looks like the Blackhawk total in Sochi is 10.

  • jordyhawk

Hjammer and Oduya playing for Sweden. Rozy for Bohemia. If Seabs makes it that leaves 15 minute Nick as our only top 6 defenseman not going.

Too many countries; not enough Blackhawks.

PK Subban has a lot to prove according to many people. Seabrook would have been a better choice. More big game experience, and has performed under the brightest lights.

      • Paul the Fossil

I’ve become a pretty strong Seabrook supporter this season but can’t agree with that. In the first place little of the criticism of Subban is backed up by any actual facts; and anyway politically it would be very hard for Yzerman to ignore any reigning NHL major-trophy winner unless he was injured.

I’d have taken Seabrook ahead of either Vlasic or Hamhuis though.

        • Joe Banks

          Vlasic? Hamhuis? – I’m stunned… it’s a pickle.

          • superman_damned

They like their D to play their natural side. Seabrook wasn’t competing with those two, they are on the left side. Plus, Vlasic has been great this year as a shut-down D-man.

        • SuperHawk27

Its a tough call, I’d hate to be in Canada’s selection committee. Seabrook leads all defensemen in +/- with a +22 and 31 points vs P K’s 33 and +/- of +14 Hamhuis and Vlasic are both at +12 with a combined 29 points…maybe they noticed Seabrook has had way too many nachos?

          • 10thMountainFire

Seabs is also a victim of a spreading eye test. The eyes on that test need lasik surgery.

          • Bullitt315

The eye test doesn’t do you any favors when your defensive partner is playing like he grabbed a super mario bros special star.

          • 10thMountainFire

Duncan Keith: bargain, perennial incredi-hero, 2014 Norris Trophy candidate.

        • Korab22

4 right-handers and 4 left-handers made the team. I haven’t looked closely at the Sweden roster yet, but I’m wondering if Hjalmarsson will make a return back to his natural side.

        • 10thMountainFire

I would have taken 7 over those two as well. Not over Subban, who I dislike for his personality but not for his play. The guy can play. So can 7. It’s a shame there wasn’t another spot. Definitely have Seabs over Vlasic and Hamhuis.

        • superman_damned

That doesn’t make any sense. Seabrook is a right side D, Vlasic and Hamhuis are left-side D. The competition Seabrook had to elevate himself past wasn’t Hamhuis or Vlasic, it was Weber, Doughty, Pietrangelo and Subban. And he certainly didn’t earn his way into that company this season.

          • 10thMountainFire

I’m not sure I agree with you a hundred percent on your police work, there, Lou.

          • http://www.lotsofbutterplease.com/ I am not Chico Maki

Babcock actually announced a while ago that he wanted 4 lefties and 4 righties.

          • 10thMountainFire

I know. I was just playing Fargo.

          • 1benmenno

            It’s just morning sickness.

          • Paul the Fossil

Traditional stats (points, plus-minus) for the season thus far:
            Subban 33, +14
            Seabrook 31, +22
            Pietrangelo 28, +15
            Weber 27, -13
            Doughty 23, +13

Fancystats (CorsiOn, CorsiRel, CorsiQofC) for the season thus far:
            Subban 2.0, 15.3, -2.6
            Seabrook 17.9, 11.0, 0.1
            Pietrangelo 8.6, 3.7, 1.7
            Weber -7.3, -0.8, 2.7
            Doughty 18.9, 8.0, -0.6

Looks to me like Seabrook is solidly in the middle of that company. (As far as actual on-ice results anyway — in terms of reputation you’re right that he’s not.)

      • superman_damned

How is Seabrook a better choice given that he was relegated to the 7th D spot early in the tournament and played very few minutes?

Subban as 7th D makes sense. You bring him out for the PP cause of his shot and puck-moving, or when the team has a decent lead to rest other defenders. Seabrook brings nothing that isn’t already on this Team Canada roster.

        • SuperHawk27

See the numbers I posted below. Seabs +22 31 points. Subban +14 33 Points. Seabs, Gold Medal + 2 Stanley Cups. Subban, Norris Trophy….not a whole lot of big game experience. Olympic Hockey for Canada = One of the biggest stages ever.

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

If you honestly believe that that Seabrook deserves to be on Team Canada over PK Subban then you’ve got massive homer blinders on. Seriously that’s nuts

          • SuperHawk27

All I caught was ‘you’ve got massive nuts’.

I am only objectively looking at the numbers. Seabrook has proven to be a big game performer, he has the stats and hardware to back it up….. what has Subban proven?

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

Subban proved that he was the best defenseman in the league last year when he won the Norris. When you consider that Subban has nearly identical numbers to Seabrook while Seabs plays with far superior teammates (particularly in terms of defensive partner) and it all adds up to Subban being the clear choice over Seabs.

          • Bullitt315

The Norris is a subjective trophy. I don’t watch enough Subban to know he’s better than Seabs but I’d agree he probably is. I can’t stand Subban going back a few years now even if I’m wllling to admit he’s top 10 D-men in the league.

          • SuperHawk27

It’s not as clear as you make it seem. How many flash in the pan Norris Trophy winners have there been? If you look at Subban’s stats from that year he was a negative in the plus minus. Keith may be great, but Seabrook is no slouch. The Olympics are quick, and one bad game can screw the team’s chances for gold, or even a medal. With Seabs experience in many big games, I would trust him more than Subban. But that’s my opinion, and I am not allowed to make decisions on the Canadian roster. I’ll be rooting for USA anyway.

          • lizmcneill

He was a +12, and Price was having the yips or something last year.

          • SuperHawk27

Hmm, I must have been looking at someone else. My mistake!

          • superman_damned

Ok, but whoever that last right side D guy is (and absolutely, Seabrook would be behind Doughty, Weber and Pietrangelo) isn’t getting much ice time. So it makes more sense to bring the PP specialist in that limited role than Nachos.

  • MySpoonIsTooBig

I strongly endorse Team Canada bringing both Chris Kunitz and Jay Bouwmeester

    -A Team USA fan

    • Joe Banks

      Dan Hamhuis?

      • VerStig

        he got dis (Kaner)

        • M7

I really hope he settles in at number 8 (depth chart). I know they wanted 4L and 4R but… I would’ve had a few people in front of him (left or right-shot be damned).

I guess it means one of Hamhuis or Vlasic is guaranteed to be in the top 6 at the start of the tournament.

          • superman_damned

Vlasic. Who has been great this season. I have no worries seeing Vlasic in the top 6, alongside either Doughty or Weber.

          • M7

I think Keith and Doughty will pair up based on how they finshed the 2010 tournament. Leaving Vlasic with Weber. They’ve got themselves 3-20 minute pairs essentially, although I think Keith and Doughty will log a bit more time with Bouw and Peitrangleo settling in as the 3rd pair (technically). I think Subban rides the bench at #7 and spells guys for the odd shift here or there (e.g. first shift after a penalty kill, second PP unit etc.).

    • superman_damned

Kunitz is going to be the guy to watch for Team Canada.

As far as Bowmeester… why? He’s half of the best defensive pairing on one of the best defensive teams in the league. I’d say given his play with Pietrangelo this year, that choice makes a ton of sense. What left-side D would you have taken in his place if you were Team Canada?

  • Bannerman

Did anybody see Ryan Hartman during the Juniors? I hadn’t seen it discussed here. I thought from what I saw that he had good vision and positioned himself well. I didn’t see the game against Canada though.

    • Joe Banks

Unfortunately, the only thing he’ll be remembered for is popping the taunting Russian in the mouse with his stick.

      • Waylon

…and although his judgement in that action was rightly questioned, I still thought it was hilarious. He looks to have a little bit of a Shaw in him, and given his stature, he’s
        going to need it.

  • Paul the Fossil

Some big names who Sharpie beat out for an Olympic spot include Joe Thornton, Martin St. Louis, Eric Staal and Claude Giroux.

    • MySpoonIsTooBig

Sharpie over those names is nowhere near as ridiculous as Kunitz…

      • SuperHawk27

He is riding Crosby’s coat tails….that can get you pretty far.

        • 10thMountainFire

Crosby’s coat tails smell like Kunitz. On rye with mayonnaise.

      • superman_damned

Sidney Crosby basically made the team twice. Kunitz is there for him (though he’s also played well with the Ducks line in his career, so he’s not completely one-dimensional in that regard).

    • 10thMountainFire

That makes it even sweeter. Sharp is finally getting the respect and attention that so undeservedly eluded him for years.

He plays with three Hall of Famers up front and one on the blue line. Dude has gotten lost in the shuffle internationally until now. It’s just great to see him on the big stage.

      • SuperHawk27

He should legally change his name HatTrick Sharp, just for the Olympics.

        • 10thMountainFire

          Meme?

      • Bullitt315

It’s really weird. He’s only underrated when it comes to media (tv) attention. Everyone seems to know he’s really good, he just doesn’t have the flash of a Toews or Kane while he slowly (ok, quickly) racks up points.

        • 10thMountainFire

His opponents definitely reflect a high respect for his play and his attitude. On 90% of the teams in the league, Patrick Sharp is The Star. I’m glad that he’s finally getting noticed. He deserves to be representing his country. I couldn’t be prouder as a Hawks fan.

  • superman_damned

Only Team Canada selections I’m really surprised at are Rick Nash and Jeff Carter. Claude Giroux and MSL would have been my choices.

That defense is insane though. Probably the best in the tournament by a long shot.

    http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=699445

Found this article hidden on blackhawks.com. Khabi had surgery, out 4-5 months. His season is done.

    • Korab22

Great find. Stan hasn’t made too many mistakes, but this signing goes near the top of the list.

      • MySpoonIsTooBig

Yeah, but if he’s done for the year it doesn’t really matter now does it?

        • Bullitt315

Yeah, when you sign a backup goalie who is old so you make sure to sign a backup backup, it really wasn’t too big of a mistake. And half the league is over the Cap with LTIR

          • MySpoonIsTooBig

The only place Khabibulin’s signing really hurts is that the ‘Hawks are technically over the cap ceiling right now but have a little north of $1M in space due to the LTIR exception, if they’d never signed Khabi then that cap space would be growing as the ‘Hawks banked cap space every day and they’d have more room to add someone at the deadline. Not much more mind you, but a little more.

          • Bullitt315

I didn’t think the signing was dumb at the time, just a little high on the $’s and we’d be in the same situation if they signed him for 1.5 if my math is right. My broader point is “If that’s your worst signing, you’re doing pretty good”

        • Korab22

Well, since it’s Rocky’s 1.7 mildo and not mine, I’m happy he’s done for the year. Clarity is good.

    • SuperHawk27

Shoulder? What the hell happened to his groin? Did it fall off?

      • BrandonPirri

I don’t have the slightest idea. I read it with a very confused look on my face. But hey, Khabi gets some money, free healthcare to fix whatever’s wrong with him, and we get a competent goalie. Whatever works.
